Chapter 12
Various battle cries and small explosions echoed around a deserted clearing a few miles outside of Slateport city. The sun had barely begun to rise and already Marcus and his team had been training for three hours with Nyx overseeing most of training. Emerald was partnered with Nia(Nidorina), while Angel squared off with Gabby(Gible). Bella and Marcus were dueling each other using Bone Rush, their staff like energy beams sparking against each other with every hit.
"Ugh how long do I have to keep this up" Lilith grunted as she jumped from tree branch to tree branch while carrying a large stone tied to her back. She was the only one not participating in mock battles.
"Until I tell you to stop, you need to increase your base stats if you ever want to stand a chance in a serious battle" Nyx said not taking her eyes off of each of the battles going on around her. She had given everyone strict training regimes to follow during their battles. Nia was supposed to use her Ground-Type moves to box Emerald in before trying to cripple her with Poison-Type moves. Emeralds only job was to power through everything with brute strength and not get caught off guard.
Angel and Gabby were focusing on ranged combat competing against each other using moves like ,Psybeam, Psycho Cuts, and Confusion against, Dragon Rage, Draco Meteor, and Mud Shot.
Bella and Marcus's training focused more on control and continuous Aura use. With Marcus boosted Aura reserves he was able to preform moves like Aura Sphere, Force Palm, and Bone Rush quite easily as well as using his Aura to increase his physical abilities. While he wasn't super human by any means if he used his Aura in limited intense burst he could achieve some amazing feats. Bella job was to push him to the limit of his abilities while keeping herself under fifty percent of her total power in order to force her to start thinking of more unconventional strategies.
"I've won plenty of battle before you even showed up, I should be training like the others." Lilith spat.
"You say that but in reality, you've only won battles against less skill trainers or wild Pokémon. You lost against Kairas Snivy and even though you managed to win against Roxanne's Geodude it was barely by the skin of your teeth." Nyx frowned. She had learned of all the experiences that Marcus had been through before her arrival in order to get a more proper gauge of what she needed everyone to focus on. "It's time you faced the hard truth…that you're currently the weakest of everyone here" Nyx said without remorse.
Lilith opened her mouth to snap back but her words caught in her throat. She wanted to yell and scream about how it wasn't true, about how she was just as strong as everyone else, but she knew in her heart it was a lie. She knew she had been falling behind for some time now, first angel evolved, then Marcus ended up receiving Nyx and Emerald from professor Birch. Bella evolved soon after becoming much more powerful than she had been previously. Lilith had hoped that Gabby would at least be near her level as Nia was already fairly strong able to hold her own against Bella and Angel, but being part of a pseudo legendary Gabby already had a handful of powerful moves that put her a good distance ahead of Lilith already.
"It's not fair" Lilith mumbled.
"What was that" Nyx frowned.
"I said it's not fair, I was one of master's original Pokémon yet I'm the only one that hasn't evolved yet. I've trained just as hard as everyone else so why am I the only one that's still so weak" Lilith cried slamming her claws into the dirt.
Nyx looked at Lilith and felt a small amount of kinship with the smaller Dark-Type. She knew how Lilith felt even though she would never admit it to anyone, but she also knew that this was a wall that Lilith needed to break through in order to become stronger and to do that she needed Lilith to see herself with a brutal amount of honesty even if it hurt. "Is that really the truth" Nyx said lowly.
"What do you mean, of course it is" Lilith glared up at Nyx.
"You'll never get stronger if you keep lying to yourself" Nyx snapped. "You've already noticed it haven't you, while you try and flirt with Marcus doing your best to be noticed by him Bella and Angel were always training and pushing themselves. That's why you've been left behind, but instead of admitting your failure you just keep blaming it on the fact that it's not fair. Well I got news for you kit, life isn't fair…take it from someone who's been around the block a few times. Either get up and push yourself to keep going or give up now and waddle in self pity forever." Nyx growled. "The choice is yours" with those last few words Nyx walked towards Marcus was it was time for her to help with the second part of his training.
'Damn that kind hearted bastard…he's starting to rub off on me' Nyx mentally growled though it was less than half-hearted. As she got closer she took a minute to admire Marcus form, his muscled chest heaved as he clashed attacks with Bella sweat beading down his face onto his chest, down his newly developing abs and into his-. Nyx shook her head to clear it as her thoughts threatened to betray her. She had found herself becoming increasingly frustrated with herself ever since Marcus had landed on top of her a few days ago. Occasionally her mind was replay flashes of his firm body on top of hers, forcing her to remember how nice his warm wet skin felt against her fur, how hypnotizing his crimson orbs had been, his lips mere inches away from hers, and how his thick member had unintentionally grinded against her womanhood. Nyx shook her head harder to get rid of the blush raising to her cheeks.
"Alright pup wait until Sabrina gets here than go train on your concentration, I'll take it from here" Nyx instructed. Bella nodded having become more trusting of Nyx since they had begun training in earnest. Partially because Bella could see how mellow Nyx had become actually beginning to use their names instead of referring to everyone as 'trash' or 'weakling'. Also partially because she could sense Nyx's shift in disposition towards their Master, Nyx had stopped insulting him completely and only attacked him with half-hearted blast that he could easily dodge or block with Aura and even when she did that it was obvious that it was only to try to keep up the tough girl act. If Bella had to guess she suspected that Nyx actually started to respect Marcus more and maybe even begun to like him just a bit.
"Alright let's see what you're made of" Nyx stood in front of Marcus while crossing her arms.
"Don't hold back" Marcus grinned despite the fact he was already covered in sweat and obviously still a little worn down from his sparing session with Bella. Nyx grinned and quickly started launching multiple Psycho-Cuts at Marcus.
Marcus quickly created his own red sparking version of Bone Rush using the energy staff to deflect or block the attacks. Before quickly compressing it down and using the energy to create a basketball sized Aura Sphere and launching it at Nyx as a counter attack while rushing forwards and coating his hand in a dense layer of Aura. 'Not bad' Nyx smirked activating Iron Tail she could tell that Marcus was trying to emulate Bella's battling style, using a ranged attack to distract or occupy his opponents while rushing in to close the distance. 'Let's see how you handle this' Nyx swung her body around and used Iron Tail like a bat to send the Aura Sphere back at Marcus.
"Oh shit" Marcus cursed as his attack was sent right back at him with even more speed and power. "Two can play that game" Marcus pushed more Aura into his palms and thrusted both of them forwards into the oncoming attack. The force was enough to force him back a few feet and he dug his heels into the dirt, thankful for the extra strength the cybernetics gave him. Unfortunately, even though he was able to stop the attack he didn't consider how unstable the ball of Aura had become and a few seconds after it made contact with his charged hands the influx of Aura caused it to explode covering him in smoke.
"Master" instantly everyone stopped their training to make sure that Marcus was okay.
"Stop your whining he's fine" Nyx said as the smoke cleared revealing Marcus to be okay albeit with a few scrapes and bruises and his hair completely blown back and occasionally sparking with red Aura.
"I see I came just in time to see something entertaining" Sabrina smirked as she arrived in the clearing.
"Yeah yeah laugh it up" Marcus groaned stumbling a bit as his legs nearly gave out. He did his best to hide it but everyone saw the look of pain on his face as he tried to take a few steps.
"I think it's time you take a break" Sabrina crossed her arms.
"I'm fine" Marcus tried to play off the wincing, only to have his body become enveloped in a dark blue outline as he began to float.
"I wasn't asking you, I was telling you" Sabrina said in a firm voice using her power to force Marcus over to her and making him lay down using her lap as a pillow.
"Nyx how long have you all been going at it" Sabrina asked while Marcus needed a translator to understand Pokémon Sabrina's psychic almost gave her a sort of built in translator. Despite the fact that she and Nyx had not always seen eye to eye they had always had a sort of begrudging respect for one another. They had both instantly recognized the others strength and stayed neutral, in the last few days of training however they had become slightly more accustom to each other. They both knew that Marcus needed to become stronger and were willing to help in different ways. Nyx handled the physical side of things while Sabrina handled the mental training. As a result, Marcus and his entire team was growing in leaps in bounds with the exception of Emerald who already possessed an extreme amount of raw power though she did benefit from Sabrina's control exercises.
"Nearly four hours now he's probably due for a dose of meds soon" Nyx answered. She had begun paying more attention to Marcus condition as time went on and despite the pain that he was no doubt feeling as he approached his next dose his eagerness to gain strength seemed to be his priority. Nyx had already forced him to stop a handful of times in order to remind him to take his pills. As much as she hated to admit it she was starting to warm up to him slightly and she didn't want him to be in any unnecessary pain.
"You have to be more stubborn than a sleeping Snorlax" Sabrina shook her head as she instructed Bella to grab his pills and canteen from his bag.
"I have to agree with the lady there" Kairas waved as he came into the clearing.
"Arceus did everyone show up just in time to see me fail." Marcus frowned quickly mashing his fingers through his hair to return it to its normal messy state.
"Well that and to remind you that we're supposed to have an interview along with Officer Jenny at 3pm. Knowing how caught up in the moment you can get I thought it would be a good idea to come and remind you" Kairas explained.
"Well he's got you there" Sabrina smirked as Marcus eyes widen obviously just remembering that he had a prior engagement besides training.
"You're not much better than he is either once you're riled up" Kairas laughed only to quickly and narrowly dodge a stone that was chucked his way via Sabrina's psychic powers.
"Kinda proving his point" Marcus grinned only to have to quickly dodge a much larger stone. "What the hell was that for…and why did you throw the bigger rock at me" he glared at the nonchalant violet haired beauty who seemed completely unperturbed by her multiple acts of violence.
"Your supposed to be on my side" Sabrina pouted.
"So you try to kill me" Marcus yelled.
"I wasn't trying to kill you…just maim you a little" Sabrina defended herself.
"That's supposed to make it okay…dear Arceus can't I ever get a break" Marcus flopped back on the ground.
"Here you are Master" Bella handed Marcus a pill along with a cup of water from his canteen.
"Thank you Bella" Marcus rubbed the loyal dual-type jackal's head before taking the pill and quickly washing it down with the provided water. "At least someone cares" Marcus quickly shot Sabrina a glare who glared back.
"I swear you two are made for each other" Kairas commented off handedly.
"We literally are" Sabrina sighed.
"Anyway I have to say I'm surprised you agreed to the interview I thought you liked keeping a low profile" Marcus wiggled his legs around to see if the meds had kicked in, luckily they were extremely quick to take effect.
"I only did it under the condition that I'll be wearing a hood and cowl during the broadcasting since it's going to be live. I'm still laying low but I don't think anyone would be able to match my voice to the interview so it should be fine. It might actually be nice to get some credit for once." Kairas grinned.
"What do you plan on doing after the interview" Marcus asked.
"Probably sticking his nose into all the wrong places again" Sabrina mused.
"What can I say I like to live dangerously, I talked to Tia a day or so ago and she had some ideas of where Team Magma might strike next so I thought I'd travel around to a few locations and see what I can dig up." Kairas revealed.
"Just promise to give us a call if you get in over your head again" Marcus replied knowing that Kairas could handled himself in most cases.
"Of course, every hero needs their sidekicks" Kairas laughed.
"What was that" Both Marcus and Sabrina growled in unison.
After a few more good-natured jabs the teens decided to have a quick lunch before returning to the city to shower and get ready for their interview that would air the day after.
"Oh man I never realized how good your cooking taste" Kairas moaned while stuffing his face with rice and grilled pork.
"Just one of my many talents" Marcus chuckled while handing out bowls of gourmet Poke-chow mixed with his own homemade variety. While he had no issue cooking for his, Sabrina's and Kairas Pokémon it was also important that they maintained a healthy diet and Pokémon required certain nutrients that weren't readily available in most human foods. While Marcus had to admit that most Poke-chow even gourmet brands didn't offer much flavor by making and mixing in his own he was able to make a pretty tasty blend that all the Pokémon seemed to enjoy even Nyx and Darkrai had no complaints about the taste and they could be very picky at times.
"It is, very good" Sabrina leaned over planting a kiss on Marcus's cheek. "I have to say when I met you I never thought cooking would be one of your strong points".
"I told you before that I was a pretty chubby kid. After I moved to Lavaridge I didn't go outside much while my older brother and his friends were around, at least until meeting Flannery. I ended up spending a lot of time with my step-mother in the kitchen so cooking kinda became second nature to me" Marcus admitted.
"Well it really did pay off" Kairas continued stuffing his face.
"Glad you enjoy it" Marcus made a bowl for himself after setting out a tray of puffins. "Once you girls are done eating feel free to have some sweets" Marcus announced getting a chorus of cheers in return. The white-haired teen sat next to his violet haired lover planting a small kiss on her neck before starting his meal. Sabrina giggled at his touch before leaning on shoulder and continuing her meal.
Sabrina had to admit despite how stubborn Marcus could be at times, it was nearly impossible for her to say mad at him for long. Usually a kiss or teasing touch was all that it took to have any irritation towards him melt away. She found her thoughts had been taken over more and more by the red-eyed teen that had become the center for her affections. Little did she know that she wasn't the only women whose mind had been plagued by the up and coming trainer.
(Scene change Lavaridge Gym)
Flannery sighed as she once again faltered during her early morning Martial Arts training. It had been barely a month since Marcus had left on his journey and she missed him more than she was willing to admit. She had never realized what a big part of her life Marcus had become, from their early morning sparring matches, to their late night study sessions and even just relaxing their dojo's in the hot springs together. It seemed like they had spent nearly every hour of the last 6 years together and Flannery couldn't count how many times she had ended up sleeping over at Marcus's house many times she hadn't even bothered to move to the guest room and instead just slept with Marcus in his bed.
'Ugh focus Flannery you knew this was going to happen eventually' Flannery wiped her face off with a towel and sat down to have a sip of water. Lately Marcus had been on her mind more often then not and after a string of erotic dreams involving the two she was able to admit that she may have had a small crush on him. Sometimes Flannery hated her fiery personality if she had been more level headed maybe she could've confessed to Marcus before he left. Flannery found herself smiling as she thought about his cheeky grin or carefree smile.
'That guy really is hopeless…maybe I should call him and see how he's doing' Flannery got up and stretched moaning as her joints popped. Just as she reached her Pokenav to give Marcus a call she ended up receiving one from Roxanne.
"Flannery how you doing girl" Roxanne's cheerful face appeared.
"Hey Roxy what's up" Flannery asked curious. It wasn't uncommon for her and Roxanne to call each other or hang out when they had time considering they were both younger gym leaders and only a few years apart in age.
"Nothing much just got done with some early morning battles, I got to let lose a bit because the girl had three badges already" Roxanne smiled.
"Lucky you, I've only gotten challenged by trainers with one or two badges at the most. It's so annoying having to hold back" Flannery growled slightly.
"Trust me I know how you feel but that's are job to accurately assess trainer's strength level and determine if they are ready for the next level" Roxanne stated.
"Yeah I know you don't have to state the regs geez" Flannery rolled her eyes.
"Sorry force of habit" Roxanne rubbed the back of her head. "On the bright side you should have a worthy challenger soon" the Rock-type specialist smirked.
"What do you mean" Flannery asked.
"Marcus already has two badges and last time I checked he was planning on challenging Watson next. Even if he comes for you after Watson he'll at least have three and if he goes after Norman after Wattson then he'll have at least four before going after you" Roxanne explained.
"I hope he waits to challenge me after Norman my limit is four badges since I'm still a new gym leader, so he'll have to challenge me soon. I want to be able to crush him at full strength" Flannery slammed her right fist into her left palm.
"Seriously you have weirdest way of showing him you like him" Roxanne teased.
"Shut up besides Marcus would never want me to go easy on him, he wants to be able to battle me at full strength and win. Otherwise he'll never get to tell me." Flannery said the last part to herself as she remembered Marcus promise to her the day he left. "There's something I want to tell you…when I'm strong enough to beat you at full strength, I'll tell you. Until then good luck on all your battles to come". Those were the last words they had shared face to face before he left.
'He better not keep me waiting much longer' Flannery growled to herself.
"Anyway, Tsundere personality aside Marcus has been becoming quite popular recently, being featured on the up and coming trainers list is no small feat not to mention his actions with helping Cynthia with the arrest of the Team Rocket goons and those Team Aqua thugs. If you don't confess your feelings for him soon he's bound to get swept up with some hussy that's more than eager to spread her legs" Roxanne crossed her arms. "Hell to be honest if I hadn't known that you were already interested in him I would've done more than that quick kiss"
"Quick What" Flannery yelled.
"Calm down it was just a small peck on the lips…well kinda small but I could tell he was totally into me. Seriously Flannery he's a teenage boy with all the raging hormones in the world he's bound to try to get some at some point. If I were you I'd try to screw him the first chance you got" Roxanne giggled perversely.
"That cheating red-eyed bastard I'm going to strangle him" Flannery roared.
"Well you might want to wait on that…cause he's on T.V right now hurry up and turn to the Slateport News Network. They're doing an exclusive on the ship hijacking that took place a couple days ago and Marcus is being interviewed for some reason along with some purple haired chick and another person with some weird hood on.
"What the-I'll call you back" Flannery hung up and quickly dashed out of the dojo sprinting the short distance to her home, she kicked in the door. "Mom hurry and turn to the Slateport New Network" Flannery yelled.
"I'm already watching it the interview just started" Amber turned up the T.V as Flannery vaulted onto the couch.
"Good morning Hoenn and thank you for joining the us today at the Slateport New Network. I'm Charles and today I'm joined by some very special guest. These three played instrumental roles in driving off the Team Magma members that had captured a research vessel earlier this week and assisted with a mass arrest that was a result of a very risky strategy where these three secretly infiltrated the ship and gave critical information to police forces who were then able to storm the ship and reclaim control"
"Starting things off we have Hoenn's newest up and comer Marcus Kale. I have to say thank you for joining us today" Charles smiled.
"No problem it's a pleasure to be here" Marcus replied.
"No offense Marcus but you're what most consider to be a rookie trainer. What were you thinking when you decided to sneak aboard. Weren't you worried at all for your safety or that of your friends." Charles asked.
"Well that was part of the reason I was so eager to get on the ship in the first place. You see my friend in the hood here had already been trapped on the ship when Team Magma took over to be honest I was more worried about his safety than my own plus I had Sabrina on my side so what was there to be worried about" Marcus laughed.
"That brings me to my next question Sabrina you're the Saffron City Gym Leader. Kanto is quite the ways away, what are you doing in Hoenn did you happen to be vacationing in Slateport when this incident occurred." Charles continued the interview.
"Not at all, I've actually been traveling with Marcus for the past few weeks. After seeing him on the battle network, I had to meet him and decided to stick around after we clicked. My father is currently running the Saffron City Gym so there's no need for me to return as of now and I'm more than happy traveling around with Marcus." Sabrina answered.
"I see is there any reason for you accompanying Marcus, perhaps you two are involved with each other" Charles leaned in.
"Marcus is a talented trainer that shows a lot of potential, that alone is enough for anyone to be interested in him. His talents don't stop at just being a trainer however, I'll admit I'm interested in him" Sabrina said simply but in a tone that said that she was done with that line of questioning.
"I see, anyway let's continue" Charles turned towards the cloaked Kairas to continue the interview.
Flannery watched as the interview went on for nearly an hour and a half. Marcus, Sabrina, and the concealed trainer answered various questions about their roles and the siege and a few about what transpired after. Flannery couldn't believe her ears Marcus was out of her sight for a month and already he's become a promising trainer, junior professor, save a Pokémon Center, gotten rid of a Team Aqua extortion operation, and now he saved a bunch of researchers and rare Pokémon.
"I always knew Marcus was going to be a great trainer" Amber smiled. "Of course, he had my little fire cracker to train with after all" Amber teased her daughter.
"Stop it mom, I didn't expect anything less if he's going to beat me and go for it all one day. It's only natural that he'd get strong as fast as possible, even though it seems like he's still a magnet for trouble." Flannery frowned as she saw the way Sabrina kept eyeing Marcus during the interview.
"Of course…it seems like he definitely inherited his father's talent with Pokémon, and women. Better be careful or someone will snatch him up before you get a chance to tell him how you really feel" Amber ruffled her daughters' hair.
"Whatever he can sleep with a dozen women and I wouldn't care" Flannery scowled.
"Now Flannery I know that's not true…you've had a serious crush on him for years now. Besides I hear you moaning his name in your sleep, and if your sheets are indication you're having some serious fantasies" Amber smirked as Flannery turned bright red and started stuttering.
"M-m-mom what the hell" Flannery yelled.
"Come on no need to be embarrassed it's only natural for a girl your age, but seriously I would've thought you two would've at least done it once before he left. The sexual tension between you two was so thick I could've cut it with a plastic knife." Amber laughed.
"It wasn't that bad…was it" Flannery hung her head.
"It was pretty bad, but don't worry I can tell you for sure that Marcus is just as into you as you are to him. Even if he has something going on with that Sabrina girl I don't think that would change the feelings he has for you. Just make sure when you see him again use that fiery passion of yours to let him know how you really feel." Amber smiled. "Anyway, I'm going to head to the store, you should shower before opening the Gym for the day" Amber stood up and walked towards the door after grabbing her purse from the kitchen counter.
Flannery decided to take her moms advice and shower. Unfortunately, after the interview and her moms teasing she couldn't get Marcus off her mind. She made a quick stop in her room grabbing her favorite pleasure device from under her pillow before heading to the bathroom. 'Damn that bastard for making me feel like this' Flannery cursed.
(Scene change just outside of Slateport City)
"Well looks like this is where we part ways once again" Kairas reached out his hand.
"Stay out of trouble or at least call me before you get into it next time" Marcus took Kairas hand before pulling him into a one arm hug.
"Will do good luck with your next gym battle, should be a cake walk with Nia and Gabby by your side." Kairas chuckled.
"I'm sure it won't be that easy but I'm ready for it. Time to see if all that training was worth it. Keep him safe alright Darkrai" Marcus smirked as said legendary morphed out of Kairas shadow.
"Of course, you can count on me" Darkrai lazy draped herself over Kairas shoulders preening as he rubbed under her chin.
"Make sure he doesn't push himself to hard, there is a thing as too much training you know" Kairas nodded towards Sabrina.
"I'll keep him on short leash" Sabrina smirked as Marcus shot her a playful glare.
"Well until next time" Kairas waved as he began to walk towards the bus station.
"You know you're right he does kind of grow on you after while" Sabrina said as they finished strapping their bags to their motorbikes.
"What can I say I have great taste in friends" Marcus gave her a playful smack on the ass.
"Easy there…maybe if you beat Watson we can mess around a bit" Sabrina winked while she had been allowing their relationship to develop slowly for the sake of their newly forged bond. She was confident that they had reached a point were physically intimacy would only strengthen it, and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't dying to have a piece of her caramel skinned lover.
"Now there's no way I'm going to lose" Marcus smirked as he turned his bike on before putting on his riding glasses and mouth scarf.
"You better not" Sabrina mimicked his actions putting on her own riding gear.
It took them the entire rest of the day to make it back to Mauville City. Unlike last time where they drove the entire way at top speed in order to rescue Kairas. This time they drove at a more moderate pace and took two breaks in order to eat and rest before finally making it back to Mauville just as the moon began to rise.
"Damn I'm tired" Marcus groaned as they rented the same penthouse suites they had stayed in during their previous visit to the city. This time Sabrina didn't even bother renting one herself since she was just going to end up in his anyway. After a quick shower the two of them exhausted from the days event quickly fell asleep snuggled in each other's embrace.
Marcus even after the events of the day prior found himself awakening after only six hours of sleep. 'Ugh being an Aura user is both a blessing and a curse.' Marcus yawned begrudgingly pulling himself out of bed and choosing one of the many brands of coffee the hotel offered. After starting the coffee maker, he found Nyx on the couch snuggled under a wool blanket. Marcus smiled she was truly adorable when she was sleeping, he gently sat down next to her and started lightly petting and rubbing her head paying special attention to the area around her horn.
"You're starting to get overly familiar aren't you" Nyx opened one eye.
"If you'd like we can both pretend you're still sleeping" Marcus mused.
"…make sure you get behind the ears" Nyx huffed.
"As you wish" Marcus adjusted himself before patting his lap.
"What are you doing" Nyx looked at him confused.
"Isn't it obvious I'm asking you to put your head on my lap it will be easier for both of us" Marcus smiled he opened their bond to reassure her that his intentions were pure. Nyx hesitated a bit before finally placing her head in his lap. Her actions were immediately rewarded when Marcus used on hand to scratch behind her ear while the other massaged the area around her horn. Nyx couldn't stop the mewl of pleasure that escaped from her mouth despite her best efforts causing her to blush and look away from Marcus in embarrassment.
"You know you don't have to be embarrassed, that was cute" Marcus assured.
"I'm a warrior I don't need to be cute, just strong" Nyx huffed.
"Well I think you're both" Marcus smiled.

"Well better wake sleeping beauty up otherwise I won't be challenging Wattson until noon." "I see lucky for you, you're the first challenger today so Wattson will be able to battle you immediately. Once you fill out this sheet it will only take a moment to prepare the battling grounds." Julie assured.
As promised within ten minutes Marcus was standing across from the seasoned Gym Leader Wattson while Sabrina sat in the stands.
"This will be a four on four match between The Gym Leader of Mauville city and the challenger from Lavaridge Marcus Kale. Both trainers will be unable to swap once they have chosen their Pokémon and no recovery items are allowed for the duration of the match." Julie announced.
"I have to say it's a bit of an honor for me to be facing such a young and accomplished trainer." Wattson stroked his beard.
"Likewise, I'm honored to be facing such an experienced and seasoned Gym Leader. I'll be sure to learn all I can during this match" Marcus nodded.
"Alright I'll be choosing first…Electrike let's start things right" Wattson chose his first Pokémon.
"Gabby time to win" Marcus threw a great ball into the air.
"I'm ready to go" Gabby growled.
"Hmm a ground and dragon type…just my luck. Don't think you're the first one to think you'll breeze through with just a type advantage. I'll show you there's more to battling than just knowing what type to choose. Electrike use Agility" Wattson ordered.
"Alright Gabby let's limit Electrike's movement with Sandstorm" Marcus ordered.
"Got it" Gabby nodded before jumping into the air and spinning rapidly causing a huge sand cloud that picked up all sorts of debris.
"Good idea but that won't be enough Electrike use Quick Attack and follow it up with Bite.
"Gabby don't let it him get close, use Sand Attack and keep your distance" Marcus ordered. While Gabby was a powerhouse for her size and had a huge type advantage, this was her first match against another trainer and a Gym Leader no less. Marcus wanted to start things off cautious to allow her to get a feel for how an actual battle went.
"Take this" Gabby yelled as she jumped backwards to avoid the Quick Attack. Electrike tried to land a hit with Bite while she was in the air but Gabby quickly shot out a blast of dirt out of her mouth scoring a direct hit to Electrike's eyes.
"Great job now hit him with Mud Shot" Marcus commanded. Gabby growled as she released a large glob of thick heavy mud and blasted the small electric-type across the stadium.
"Such power" Wattson gasped as his Electrike rolled to a stop and was barely able to get back to its feet.
"Great job girl, stay on your toes though this isn't over yet" Marcus said not wanting to let down his guard.
"Electrike return" Wattson ordered. "Your Gible is strong and there's no point in forcing Electrike to continue to get injured in a battle it can't win. This first round goes to you Marcus" Wattson conceded.
"I understand, in that case I'd like to keep Gabby on the field to challenge your next Pokémon" Marcus said getting a nod from Wattson.
"Alright let's try this again Raichu let's go" Wattson called forth his next Pokémon.
"Huh a Raichu this time, Gabby be careful Raichu has a much more diverse move set than Electrike we can't let him take us my surprise" Marcus warned.
"Right" Gabby nodded.
"Okay I'm going to take the first move this time, Gabby use Dragon Rage" Marcus ordered.
"Alright take this" Gabby created a medium sized ball of draconic energy.
"Starting things off with a strong ranged attack, not bad. But let me show you what I've learned in my time as a Gym Leader. Raichu use Iron Tail and send that attack back to sender" Wattson commanded.
"Rai Raichu" Raichu jumped into the air coating it's tail in a steel like aura before swing it around in a vicious circle and sending the attack right back at Gabby with twice the speed of the original attack.
"Oh shit Gabby do-" before Marcus could tell Gabby to dodge she was struck by her own attack causing a small explosion and was sent tumbling backwards.
"Gabby are you okay" Marcus asked as the small Dragon-type got to her feet.
"That sure packed a punch…but I'm fine" Gabby flashed her sharp teeth ready to keep battling.
"Your Gible has a lot of fight in her" Wattson noted.
"She sure does, so don't think that she's going to go down that easy" Marcus grinned.
"I would hope not. Raichu use Mega Punch" Wattson ordered hoping to push his advantage.
"Gabby meet it head on with Dragon Claw" Marcus shouted hoping that Gabby was strong enough to go toe to toe with Raichu when it came to raw power. Luckily for Marcus it soon became apparent as the two Pokémon clashed that Gabby had a slight advantage.
"Raichu quick disengage and use Icicle Crash" Wattson ordered.
"Gabby retreat, use the sandstorm for cover then use Dig" Marcus commanded.
Both Pokémon quickly jumped back towards their trainers Raichu quickly raised its paws above its head and gather frost creating a massive icicle ignoring the slight damage it was taking from the roaring sandstorm. Gabby quickly disappeared into the sandstorm and started to burrow her way beneath the ring.
'It's all going to come down to who can strike first' Marcus thought.
"Raichu be ready she can pop up from anywhere" Wattson warned.
"It's now or never, Gabby let's finish this" Marcus yelled. The ground under Raichu cracked and Gabby shot up slamming the large electric mouse in the gut.
"Raichu hang in their" Wattson encouraged.
"Rai Raichu Rai" Raichu gritted its teeth and held its ground before trying to slam the large Icicle down on Gabby's head. Marcus had to think fast and he knew there was only one move that might possibly lessen the damage and allow him to win. 'Even though she still hasn't mastered it completely we really don't have a choice'. "Gabby quick use Zen Headbutt".
"I won't lose" Gabby growled she smashed her head upward crashing straight into the ice-type attack. Her skull being protected by a thin barrier of psychic energy. The two attacks clashed and for a few seconds it looked like Gabby would be pushed back, but with a savage battle cry she planted her feet digging her talons into the ground and little by little the ice began to crack until finally it shattered.
"Finish it" Marcus yelled.
"It's over" Gabby roared keeping her momentum going and slamming her head into Raichu's face. Raichu stumbled back a few steps before finally collapsing on its back with spirals in its eyes.
"Raichu is unable to battle this round goes to Marcus Kale from Lavaridge both trainers may now choose their next Pokémon" Julie refereed.
"Alright Gabby you've done a great job but now its time for a well-deserved rest" Marcus said recalling the worn-out baby land shark. "Now Nia let's finish thing off" Marcus yelled launching another great ball into the air.
"I'm ready" Nia said raising the poisonous barbs on her back and arms. "Magneton use Protect" Wattson ordered.
"Mag Magneton" Magneton protected itself with a green barrier.
'Hmm he used the move Protect instead of just dodging, that must mean his Magneton is lacking speed' Marcus theorized. 'In that case I can wear him down without risking Nia taking much damage'.
"Nia use Sandstorm and follow it up with another barrage of Mud-Shot" Marcus ordered.
"You got it" Nia happily complied creating a harsh sandstorm that ripping and tore at everything on the battlefield.
"Smart trying to overwhelm my Magneton while keeping yourself at a distance" Wattson smirked. "Magneton counter those Mud-shots with Flash Cannon" Wattson commanded.
Both Pokémon launched their ranged attacks with the ground and steel attacks clashing in the middle of the battlefield causing a large explosion. Marcus and Wattson both had to shield their eyes as dirt and smoke covered the battlefield.
"Not bad young man you are indeed a capable trainer" Wattson chuckled. "Let's see how you handle this Magneton use Metal Sound then use Mirror Shot"
"Nia use the Sandstorm as cover" Marcus quickly ordered.
"You got it" Nia quickly moved to do as she was told only to stop and clench her ears in pain as Magneton let lose an ear-piercing cry.
"Ughhh" Nia groaned in pain, even Marcus had to plug his ears as the sound carried through the entire room. Unfortunately that pause allowed for Magneton to score a direct hit with its Mirror Shot attack sending Nia skidding backwards across the ground.
"Oh no Nia are you okay" Marcus asked worried.
"A little bruised but I can still fight" Nia said flexing her poisonous barbs to show she still had her fighting spirit.
'Damn it that attack had to deal a decent amount of damage, and thanks to Wattson using Metal Sound to lower her Special Defense Nia won't be able to take many more shots like that.'
"Nia time to get up close and personal with Double Kick" Marcus smirked.
"Time for some payback" Nia growled rushing forwards.
"Magneton dodge it" Wattson yelled but the bulky steel type wasn't able to out match Nia's newfound speed, the result of Nyx's intense training. Two powerful kicks sent the floating magnet hurling backwards until it slammed into the wall of the gym making a nice sized dent.
"Great job Nia let's end this with another Double Kick" Marcus yelled throwing his fist forwards.
"Magneton counter with Magnet Bomb" Wattson ordered.
Both Pokémon let out battle cries as the clashed head on but it quickly became apparent that Magneton was no match for Nia physically as it found itself buried in the ground thanks to another savage Double Kick.
"Make sure it stays down this time finish it with Mud-Shot" Marcus shouted.
"It's over now" Nia snarled as she launched the powerful ground type attack scoring a direct hit. Even if Wattson Magneton was strong even it couldn't stand up to back to back super effective moves, and once the smoke cleared Magneton laying still no longer able to battle.
"This round goes to Marcus of Lavaridge" Julie announced.
"Alright great job Nia. Can you still battle or do you need a break" Marcus asked.
"I can still fight" Nia said determined to win her next battle.
"Alright since you don't seem to need to switch your Pokémon out it's time for my final battler. Manectric your up" Wattson called his final Pokémon.
"Alright Nia let's not waste any time jump up and use Toxic in a wide arc" Marcus ordered.
"You're not getting away from this" Nia leaped into the air before letting out a massive glob of toxic slime.
"Manectric dodge with Quick Attack and follow up with Bite" Wattson quickly countered.
Marcus clenched his fist as he watched Manectric blur around the field completely avoiding Nia's Toxic. His mind raced as he quickly thought of a strategy to turn the battle in his favor. 'His Manectric excels in speed I'll need to hope that Nia's defensive stats can hold up against it' Marcus smirked slightly as a plan started coming together in his head.
"Nia hold your ground" Marcus shouted.
"Okay" Nia quickly took a defensive stance. Part of her wondered why he hadn't ordered her to try to dodge but another part knew that she could trust him. Whatever plan her master had come up with he was putting his faith in her abilities even if that meant she needed to tank a hit.
Manectric quickly closed the gap leaping forward its jaws ready to clamp down on Nia. "Nia now use Poison Jab" Marcus ordered.
Nia used one arm to block allowing it to become Manectric's chew toy while she reared back with her free arm. A sickly purple energy coated it seconds before she slammed it into Manectric's muzzle.
The quadruped electric type skidding back a few meters but otherwise shook off the blow, aside from the purplish ting that was now spreading from where Nia hit. A clear sign it had been afflicted with the poison.
"Damnit" Wattson cursed as he recognized he needed to end this battle quickly before Manectric's health was slowly drained away. "Manectric use Hyper Beam" Wattson was hopping to land a big hit and end things in one shot.
"Nia use Protect" Marcus quickly instructed.
Nia barely got the barrier up as the powerful energy beam struck her pushing her backwards from the sheer force until she was engulfed in another explosion.
"Nia are you okay" Marcus asked as the smoke cleared.
"Yeah…barely, but I don't think I can block another one of those" Nia panted as she was starting to tire.
"Hopefully you won't have to. Now quick use Venom Drench while Manectric can't move" Marcus was starting to sweat as this battle was starting to come down to the wire. Wattson could only watch as his Pokémon was doused in poisonous liquid lowering its stats.
"Now let's deal some damage with Mud-shot" Marcus followed up.
"Manectric use quick attack to dodge then use Flamethrower" Wattson commanded noting that Manectric was moving slower than before.
Marcus frowned as Manectric was still fast enough to dodge Nia's Mud-shot and watched as she was hit by the fire-type attack, though admittedly it was fairly weak.
"Nia it's time to end this once and for all, hit Manectric with a full powered Venoshock"
"Manectric quick dodge it" Wattson tried to keep his Pokémon in the battle but the poison had been draining it the entire battle and it was just to tired to get out of the way as Nia brought down both her claws coated in the powerful poison-type attack. The blow was so strong it left Manectric in a large crater where it had spirals in its eyes.
"Gym Leader Wattson's Manectric is unable to battle, Marcus's Nidorina wins. This battle goes to Marcus from Lavaridge" Julie announced the final verdict.
"Alright we did it" Marcus cheered rushing forwards and hugging Nia tightly. Luckily she was able to lower her barbs so he was accidently poisoned.
"I have to admit you are a very impressive trainer and more than deserving of this Dynamo Badge and the winnings that come with it." Wattson smiled as he returned Manectric. "Of course, as you may know Poison Jab is a move that ha a chance of dealing the poison status effect on contact, while Venom Drench is a move that lower the targets Attack, Special Attack and Speed as long as the target is already poisoned. I used both these moves to ensure that your next attack sequence would be both less fast and less powerful. Then I followed it up with a full powered Venoshock which deals double damage to a poisoned target and bam." Marcus explained.
"I see it appears that not only have I been out battled, but out strategized as well." Wattson laughed with no sore feelings about his devastating loss.
Marcus and Wattson talked for a bit longer until they were forced to end their conversation as Wattson had another challenger that was eager to earn her own badge.
"Well that was fun so what do you want to do now, we have the entire rest of the day" Marcus asked Sabrina as they exited the Gym.
