Chapter 11:
Reunited
-Within Erebor's Underground-
She'd been scared when she heard the commotion in the tunnels, wondering if there was cave-in occurring. Then the wall the guards had built exploded from the outside and in flooded many a dwarf. Ochre clutched at the bars of her cell when she saw the gleaming bald head of Dwalin. Then Thorin looked up and locked eyes with her, he seemed almost ready to speak when his eyes trailed down her form.
That was when she watched him go still with shock, and then Fili popped up out of nowhere and stared at her as well. Ochre felt her face heat as she took a step back from the bars; the way they were looking at her had her growing nervous. Then she saw him and nothing else mattered.
"Kili..." She rushed the bars again as his eyes met hers, she smiled, so happy to see him again. Then as with his uncle and brother, his eyes drifted down her form and she almost felt it as he did so. She closed her eyes when he saw what the other two had, she wasn't sure if she could handle his reaction.
She was pregnant and almost too full term. Her belly was large and ungainly as she shifted uncomfortably. Then she heard a deep rumbling growl and blinked open her eyes. Seeing the pure rage in Kili's eyes had her trembling, and then she saw two guards rushing towards them from the side. One of them was the guard whom had given her the water, she cried out, "Behind you!"
Kili tore his eyes from Ochre long enough to fight back against the attacking men. His mind was whirling with the implications of what he'd just seen. Once the men were subdued, Kili ignored everything else and rushed to the cage. Gripping the bars he pulled on them roughly but they didn't budge an inch.
Ochre slid her hands through the bars to touch his hands. "Please Kili; you'll hurt yourself if you don't stop." He cursed once more, gripping her hands in his own. "I can't leave you in there like this. Not in your condition." Ochre smiled tremulously, her eyes filling with tears. "We'll talk about this later, once we get out of this place."
Fili hurried over, interrupting their moment, "I've got the key!" Kili stood to the side, clenching his fists as he watched his brother opening the cage. Once it was open, Ochre rushed out and to both Fili and Kili's surprise, she ran straight past them. She moved to the far edge of the cavern, moving as fast as she could considering.
The brother's followed close behind her, Thorin right on their heels. Once she had reached the other side she looked around and let out a gasp of relief when she saw that Falin was awake and pressing against the bars of her own cell. It seemed that when they had been separated both of them had gotten locked up to prevent them from escaping.
Falin's color was much better and Ochre smiled at her. "Falin!" Smiling back, Falin moved to the bars, "Ochre, you're out. How did you...Fili!" Turning, Ochre watched as Fili hurried over and struggled to open the lock to Falin's cage with shaking hands.
Feeling a hand touch her shoulder while the other slid around her waist, Ochre sank back into the embrace, knowing it was Kili behind her. His breath was hot against her ear as he asked, "how far along?" Ochre sighed at that as she placed her hands over his on her burgeoning belly, "a week more at the least, two at most. Then it will be time."
His hand clenched reflexively against her stomach and she tightened her grip, "you couldn't have known Kili, neither did I. Do not blame yourself, not for any of it." Falin's voice broke into their little world, "she is right Kili, there is only one who deserves the blame. Dain."
"Punishment will be swift. That much I can promise. For now we need to get out of here before something worse happens." Thorin had come up to them and was pointing at the ceiling, "this place is highly unstable. I sent Dwalin and the others with the prisoners back up to the main tunnels."
Fili was quick to move at that, he gripped Falin's hand and made a beeline for the exit. She struggled at first when she saw that Ochre wasn't behind them, but a nod from her was all it took to reassure Falin that Ochre wouldn't be far behind. Taking his cue from his brother, Kili turned to Ochre and moved to pick her up.
Seeing this, Ochre backed up waving them off. "I'm walking until I can't anymore. I've been so cooped up I can't stand it, come on." With that Ochre moved past both Thorin and Kili, they quickly caught up to her and they all made their way back out. Ochre had gotten very far before she began to tire, almost making it all the way back before she knew she couldn't anymore.
Kili took his queue and picked her up, making sure he had a good strong hold on her as he moved past all their men and back into the main halls of Erebor. He ignored any and all around him as he made his way through the corridors and into the main family quarters. It took only a few more minutes before he'd returned to their rooms, before entering he looked down at Ochre. Her head was against his chest and he felt more complete than he had in a very long time.
With a sigh, Kili opened the door and moved inside. He shut it firmly behind him as he carried Ochre to their bedroom and sat her down upon the bed gently. She smiled as he released her and looked up at him, "It's good to be home Kili." She then reached up to pull him down, kissing him soundly on the lips.
Unable to hold back at that point, Kili wrapped his arms about her and pulled her as close as he possibly could. He kissed her back as hard as he could without hurting her only breaking contact when they both needed to breathe. At that point Ochre curled close to him and felt herself nodding off. After everything that had happened she was finally feeling bone deep exhaustion and she could now let herself feel that exhaustion.
"Stay...with...me...Kili." She yawned once before she burrowed her head into Kili's chest and let sleep sweep her away. Kili pressed a kiss to Ochre's forehead and let out a contented sigh, "I'm not going anywhere Kurdûh."
He slid his hand down to softly touch her belly; he was so nervous and scared about what she'd been through. But this, her pregnancy was on a whole different level. He felt deprived for not being there through all of her pregnancy, but he knew he couldn't let that ruin this moment.
She was here and that was all that mattered. He would make sure that the rest of her pregnancy went as well as he could provide. Their child would be born safe; he'd make sure of it. With that thought in the forefront of his mind he shifted to lay down pulling Ochre along gently. Once he was sure she would be comfortable, Kili tucked her head under his chin and let Ochre's mere presence lull him into sleep.
It was the slamming and jostling of pots and the like that roused Ochre from her slumber. It was growing increasingly louder as was the cursing that echoed each noise. She yawned as she shifted a bit, feeling a slight pull on her side from a cramp. She rubbed at it until the pain faded, then she sat up against the headboard and listened to Kili's rather inventive cuss words.
Then she felt a shift and a sudden dull pain in her belly, the baby was being restless. She patted the spot before calling out, "Kili." An immediate couple of cuss words resounded from the kitchen before Kili came charging in as if ready for a battle. Ochre laughed at the flour she saw in his hair and beard before reaching out a hand silently, Kili tilted his head in confusion but hurried to her side anyway.
Once she had hold of his hand she placed it upon her belly where their child had punched her and smiled at his perplexed expression. "Wait for it." She spoke and as if in response, another dull pain followed by a jerking motion.
Kili went stock still as his eyes widened; he stared down at where his hand sat in pure awe. "Is that?" Ochre hummed a response, "Mmmmhmm." Kili sank to his knees next to the bed and removing his hand from her belly, kissed the spot softly. "I love you Ochre..." He laid his head against her belly at that and Ochre ran her fingers through his hair, combing it while holding him close at the same time.
They stayed this way for a good few minutes before Kili finally pulled away enough to look up at her. His mouth quirked in a crooked smile, the kind she loved. "I made you breakfast, would you like it in bed or would you prefer to join me at the table?" The concern in his tone made her heart skip, how she loved him. "Lead the way."
Laughing, Kili got up and held out his hand to help her up. She was grateful for this; it had become harder to do so on her own the larger she grew. Once on her feet she let him walk arm in arm with her to the kitchen, he then pulled out a chair for her and helped her into it. He then hurried to the stove before carrying a plate with potatoes and meat over.
It smelled wonderful and considering the type of meals she'd been having for the last year, anything other than hard tack and porridge was a godsend. He set the plate before her along with a knife and fork; he then leant down to kiss her forehead, "eat your fill. I've made plenty."
She did just that when he pulled away and went to serve himself up a plate. Once he was seated they ate in pleasant silence until a loud knocking sounded at the door to their chamber. It was an almost frantic knocking too and that was one reason why Kili rushed to answer it. Ochre heard him open the door and cuss once more, worried by this she was about to get up to go see who it was.
Thorin walking into the room stopped that. He was followed by Oin and Dis.
"You already look better, I am glad to see that." Thorin did sound relieved and Ochre smiled at that, "It's all thanks you and your men finding me when you did. What about Falin? Is she alright, she had a bad fever before they separated us. I didn't get to find out if it had passed completely or not."
Oin was the one who answered, "Aye, the lass told me as much herself. I saw her just before we headed over here. She is fully recovered; do not worry yerself on that account lass. Now, the true question is will ye let me give you the once over or not?"
Ochre knew he was speaking to her, but he was keeping his eyes upon Kili and understood completely what he was trying to get across. "I don't see why not, I've been without any medicinal help since being taken. I too am curious if everything is progressing as it should. This being my first and all, I am a bit worried."
Kili moved over behind her and gripped her shoulder, "Yes, I am worried for her as well. If Falin got sick, Ochre might have caught the same illness. We can't take that chance." Ochre turned her head to kiss Kili's knuckles as she smiled up at him in thanks.
Dis, who had been standing at the back, moved forward as that, "I will accompany you, I know what to expect of a healthy pregnancy." Ochre could see her underlying excitement and smiled again, "Of course, thank you." She then moved to get up and Kili hurried to assist, once on her feet Ochre walked back to the bedroom, Dis and Oin were behind her.
Kili hoped everything went well.
