(Oh, and obligatory trigger warning for crass language. Though if you've read Jay before, you probably know that.)
Cloudpaw raced across the territory sweat pouring off his fur like a river along reeds.
"COME ON! WE HAVE TO WARN THUNDERCLAN!"
Shimmerpaw was struggling to keep up behind him, panting and wheezing, "Lemme...lemme catch my breath..."
Cloudpaw scoffed and continued on, as Shimmerpaw fell behind.
He made it to the clearing, and when he got there, his heart rose.
Lionblaze and Cinderheart were sleeping peacefully in the clearing.
"Thank Starclan," he grinned, "OVER HERE! HEY!"
Lionblaze and Cinderheart immediately sat up. Lionblaze cursed while Cinderheart was blushing, "Cloudpaw?! What are you doing out here?!"
"SHADOWCLAN IS COMING! AN ATTACK IS IMMINENT!" Cloudpaw bowed his head in respect at the two warriors, still out of breath.
Lionblaze smoothed his fur out, and widened his eyes as Shimmerpaw burst out the foliage, tumbling down the into the clearing in exhaustion, "Shimmerpaw?! What were you two doing that far out?!"
"No TIME!" Cloudpaw screamed, "We have to alert the camp!"
Lionblaze nodded and turned to Cinderheart, "I'll get to camp and wake up the warriors."
"Wait! Before you go, do you know how many cats there will be? How do you know about this attack!"
"Shardpaw! He told us that some Shadowclan apprentices were gonna sneak attack us!"
"Apprentices?" Lionblaze chuckled, "So unruly...Blackstar must get them in check."
"Shuddup," Cinderheart playfully cuffed his ear, while Lionblaze playfully whined in pain, "Now go do your job."
Cinderheart nodded and gestured for the two apprentices to follow, "Come on kids...let's go."
Shimmerpaw, tired, leaned against Cloudpaw, who blushed and helped guide her to follow after her mother.
By the time they reached the camp, Lionblaze was already rousing the warriors, getting them aware of the threat.
"Shadowclan is preparing a sneak attack!"
"Why?! What have we done? Is this about the trespassing dispute?" Berrynose asked.
Poppyfrost shook her, "No it doesn't make any sense! Shadowclan isn't going to attack because of some stupid trespassing!"
"Quiet!" Bramblestar stood beside Lionblaze, "From the intelligence we have, the majority of the upcoming war party are apprentices."
Ivypool sighed, "So? Some apprentices are good fighters, if not lacking in raw skill and making up for it with brutality and wildness."
"Even so, they are apprentices. Our job is to push them out, not kill."
"What if-"
"They threaten the lives of a clanmate, only then are you authorized to use deadly force."
Poppyfrost unsheathed her claws, "I like the sound of that."
"We cannot allow them the chance to take this gorge! They want to attack Thunderclan? Fine...so let's remind them why we're called THUNDERclan. OORAH!"
"OORAH!" The warriors yowled, flexing their claws.
Jayfeather was being moved out of his den by Squirrelflight and he was not happy, "Where are you taking me?"
"To safety! Perhaps the great tree," His adoptive mother sighed, while Jayfeather broke out of her hold.
"I will NOT leave this camp."
"Jayfeather NO!" Lionblaze overheard the argument, "I'm not risking-"
"Don't try to change my mind. I was there during the Great Battle. I can handle some lowly Shadowclan punks!"
Lionblaze couldn't help the smile on his face.
"You're so stupid."
"You're one to talk."
Squirrelflight looked at Jayfeather, "Jayfeather...please..."
Lionblaze turned to Squirrelflight, "Stand guard and protect Briarlight. Brackenfur will protect the queens and kits."
"What about-"
"I'll keep him safe," Lionblaze smiled, "Trust me."
Shimmerpaw ran to her father's side, "DAD! They're...they're coming!"
Lionblaze rose a brow, "How do you know?"
Jayfeather raised his nose to the air and took a deep sniff.
"She's right...they're here."
Lionblaze roared, "EVERYONE! GET READY!"
Lakepaw smirked, padding up the hillside, "They won't be expecting us."
Graypaw bit his lip, "Are we sure?"
A more seasoned apprentice, Pinepaw, a tabby cat of large reddish brown hues with bright green eyes and a white tail tip nodded, "What reason have they to expect it?"
"I dunno. Loose tongues?" Flamehowl, a reddish she-cat, suggested, "Most of our forces are apprentices."
"SEASONED apprentices," Lakepaw snarled.
Flamehowl rose a brow, seemingly entertained by Lakepaw, "Okay...oh so seasoned one. You're taking point then."
Lakepaw was shocked, but more so proud, "You'll follow my orders?"
Dustleap looked to Flamehowl with concern, who merely shrugged, "You're the seasoned one. What's the strategy?"
"We sneak in, and with a mighty howl, attack and tear their nests and take their freshkill. Maybe beat some of them to the point of impairment," Lakepaw grinned, "They'll be freshly woken, and be groggy and disorientated. Not ready for battle. Then, Graypaw and Flamehowl sneak past them, and kill the queens and kits."
Graypaw sighed, "That's mighty...and sends a message."
"We're not here to send messages," Dustleap scoffed, "We're here to attack."
Lakepaw grinned and turned to his apprentice friends.
"Hailpaw, you take out the guard. You're the sneakiest one. Whe-"
"THEY KNOW WE'RE COMING!" Shardpaw came bursting out of the foliage, and tired, "Someone talked! They're bright and awake!"
"WHAT?!" Lakepaw roared, looking over the top of the hill.
It was true.
The warriors getting placed to
Lakepaw was raging.
Flamehowl sighed, "Surprise attack this is not. We should run."
"NO!" Graypaw protested, "That would be weak! We can't do that!"
Lakepaw smirked, "Aye. This changes NOTHING! We rush them. We can take them. We kill them."
Dustleap shook his head, "NO! I say we cut and run."
Flamehowl smirked, "Coward."
"Cowards survive, Flamehowl."
"I am in charge, And I say we attack!"
Flamehowl sighed, "Whatever you say?"
Fallenpaw and Copperheart nodded, while Dustleap growled, trying to get himself more confident, "Yeah...We'll crush them easily."
"If they're too stupid to flee, then yes."
"So you are staying coward?" Pinepaw snarked.
Dustleap blew the fur out of his eyes, "Fine, be that way."
Lakepaw looked back at the army of Thunderclan warriors and smirked.
"ATTACK!"
Shimmerpaw found herself lost in the chaos.
Somewhere, her father was out throwing apprentices like sticks, and other apprentices were pushing some warriors back.
She slipped away to the side of the confrontation and widened her eyes at what she saw.
"He's blind! Take him down slowly!" Graypaw scoffed, as Lakepaw grinned malicously, while Hailpaw charged forward.
Before Shimmerpaw could save her uncle, she was tackled to the side by a shadowclan apprentice.
"STUPID THUNDERCLAN MORONS!"
Wait...
"Shard-"
"Shutup. Now push me off!"
Shimmerpaw widened her eyes in confusion, kicking Shardpaw off as she circled him.
Shardpaw gave off an aura that he would rather be anywhere but here.
Which angered Shimmerpaw.
Because he was here.
"What are you doing here?! Who's side are you on?!"
"Who's else but Shadowclan's side?!" Shardpaw hissed.
"Then why did you warn-"
"DIE WELP!"
The ShadowClan apprentice tackled Shimmerpaw to the ground, and roughly pinned her on the floor.
Before she could struggle, Shardpaw leaned closer and whispered into her ear.
"Can you make it MORE obvious?!"
NOW Shimmerpaw understood.
The aura...the behavior...the whispering...
He was here to protect his cover.
Shimmerpaw whispered back, "I have to save my uncle."
Shardpaw let out a low laugh, that almost made Shimmerpaw blush.
"He seems to be handling himself."
Shimmerpaw looked to Jayfeather, expecting to see her uncle getting beaten.
It was the other way around.
Jayfeather dodged a wild swing from Hailpaw, and twirled around to deliver a hard punch to Lakepaw's nose, and ducked under Hailpaw's pounce, causing the two apprentices to knock into each other.
He felt a harsh strike to his face, and feigned a stumble, only to open his jaws and catch the next strike from Fallenpaw.
He pulled her off balance enough to make her fall, and repeatedly bash her face into the dirt.
Shimmerpaw was stunned.
Shardpaw snickered, "He seems to be doing great."
It was only then that the two apprentices realized the situation (or rather positions) they were in.
The two blushed and before Shardpaw could clamber off or instruct her to push him off, a loud roar caught their attention.
"GET OFF OF HER YOU SICK FREAK!"
Shardpaw was tackled to the ground by Cloudpaw, who was trying his best to break through the Shadowclan apprentice's defenses and hurt him to the point where he couldn't stand.
"I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN TO NOT TRUST YOU!"
"CLOUDPAW NO-!"
Shardpaw slashed Cloudpaw's eyes, and pushed him off.
Cloudpaw's eyes stung, but after opening them, he found he could see just fine, albeit a little teary eyed.
"I'll deal with this!" Shardpaw scoffed, circling the both of them.
"RGGGHHHARRR!" Lionblaze had bulldozed several cats out of the way, while Bramblestar and Berrynose were fighting back to back against Flamehowl and Copperheart.
Dustleap made the foolish decision to try and shove Lionblaze back, only to easily be pushed back by the larger and bulkier cat, who seemingly took offense to his struggle, and pushed harder. Dustleap quickly found the peril in his poor choice of an enemy, and attempted to trip the cat, who seemingly just pushed him down.
"You're done tourist," Lionblaze scoffed.
Dustleap growled and surrendered.
Meanwhile, Shardpaw ducked under a blind strike of Cloudpaw's and easily uppercutted him away.
Shimmerpaw faked a pounce, but Shardpaw easily rolled over and crushed her under his weight, leaving her breathless, only further agitating Cloudpaw, who took some harsh jabs at Shardpaw's exposed belly. Shardpaw yowled in pain and struck Cloudpaw's claws away, and reacting with a quick strike to his shoulder.
"You're a serious one I'll give you that!"
"YOU WON'T TOUCH HER AGAIN!"
Shardpaw eyed Cloudpaw up and down.
"You...care for her."
Cloudpaw blinked, seemingly frozen in motion.
Shardpaw grinned and unsheathed his claws.
"Then I'll save her the trouble of rejecting you..."
Cloudpaw took the bait, and pounced, but Shardpaw lowered his head and lifted it, headbutting the bottom of Cloudpaw's chin.
Cloudpaw, disorientated, could only protest as Shardpaw knocked him out cold with a serious strike to the top of the head.
Shimmerpaw began to stand, getting her air back.
Lakepaw was enraged by the whole struggle and turned to Graypaw.
"Time for some casualties of war."
Graypaw nodded in understanding and rushed to the the nursery.
Shimmerpaw took notice.
"NO!"
She was hardly aware of what she was doing when she left Cloudpaw and Shardpaw alone, dashing after Graypaw.
Greypaw slowly stalked into the nursery, avoiding a nearby scuffle between Brackenfur and Pinepaw (an apprentice that made up for his age with his large size.)
Greypaw had barely made it past the entrance when he was dragged out by a pair of jaws clamping out on his tail.
Shimmerpaw had fire in her eyes, enraged at Graypaw and pulling him away.
Greypaw turned around and struck her face, which made her let go of his tail.
"YOU'D KILL KITS?!"
"FOR SHADOWCLAN!"
Greypaw ducked under Shimmerpaw's strike and countered with a slash of his own.
Shimmerpaw saw red.
Greypaw hissed and attempted to sink his fangs into her neck as she stumbled from a blow.
Shimmerpaw slashed his mouth, cutting his tongue, as Greypaw staggered back. She tried to shove him to the ground, but Greypaw was larger and more ferocious, striking Shimmerpaw back.
Greypaw set his sights now on Shimmerpaw, spitting blood into her eyes and then slashing at her chest with wild and deep swings.
Shimmerpaw cried out in pain, and stumbled back, circling him until she was between him and the nursery.
"You want them dead you'll have to go through me."
"Then save me the trouble and drop dead."
"YOU'D KILL QUEENS?!"
"FOR SHADOWCLAN!"
Shimmerpaw spat blood out herself and narrowed her eyes. She stood her ground, as Greypaw rushed forward, sinking his teeth into her chest and biting down hard.
Shimmerpaw pushed forward, only having Greypaw sinking his teeth further in, but causing him to trip on his own paws. He stumbled down onto his back, and Shimmerpaw eyed him dangerously.
"For Thunderclan..."
She sunk her teeth into his neck.
Greypaw let out a scream of pure agony, as Shimmerpaw was blinded by her fury and rage at the Shadowclan cat.
"GRAYPAW!" Lakepaw screeched in realization, breaking out of Jayfeather's pinning grip, and rushing to his side. Lakepaw tried to pry Shimmerpaw off of Greypaw which only made Shimmerpaw sink her teeth deeper, pulling Greypaw's throat as she was pulled off, taking his windpipe with her, and tossing it on the ground as Lakepaw started crying at Greypaw's side, the poor cat choking on his own blood.
Greypaw was whimpering and whining, knowing the wound was fatal. It was only now did he seem to understand that he didn't want to die. He was too young, he hadn't yet LIVED!
But his eyes dulled with lifelessness even so...
Dustleap noticed Greypaw's body, "SHADOWCLAN! RETREAT!"
This woke Lakepaw up from the scene he was making, "NOOOO! KEEP FIGHTING!"
Dustleap took charge of the situation, and grabbed the hysteric Lakepaw, screaming at the top his lungs.
"I'LL KILL YOU SHIMMERPAW! I'LL KILL YOU! YOU'LL DIE FOR THIS!"
"SHADOWCLAN! RETREAT!"
Blackstar was fuming, "What the hell happened?!"
Flamehowl sighed, "They knew we were coming. They were prepared and kicked our tails..."
"There was an attack? I do not recall giving you orders to ambush Thunderclan, least of all using apprentices."
Dustleap was staring at the ground and bit his lip, "Sir...we didn't lead the assault."
Blackstar grabbed Dustleap and forced him to look at his eyes.
"You were lead by an apprentice?"
Shardpaw opened his mouth, "Blackstar, Dustleap was advising us against it...he...he was there to try to dissuade us and when he didn't, he decided to fight in order to at least protect us during the attack..."
Dustleap looked to Shardpaw in shock as Blackstar's anger cooled, "He was there as a supervisor?"
"Well...no. He was there trying to get us to turn back, and when we didn't...well we needed all the help we could get...sir."
Blackstar glared at Dustleap, "Is this true?"
Flamehowl snarled, "If you mean was Dustleap being a coward then-"
"AT THIS POINT I HAPPEN TO BE SPEAKING TO THE CAT SMARTER THEN YOU, FLAMEHOWL!" Blackstar all but struck at Flamehowl, who cowered under his wrath.
Dustleap slowly nodded, "Aye sir...I was doing so...Shardpaw is right."
Blackstar looked at Dustleap and then the rest of the members of the attack, as they clan watched around them.
"You will be punished like them...but less severely, for you were perhaps the only rational one. Shardpaw!"
As Blackstar padded to the handsome apprentice, Dustleap let out a breath of relief as Flamehowl was still staring at the ground afraid.
Shardpaw stood at attention, as Blackstar got in his face, "You seem to be an honest cat...who lead this attack?"
Shardpaw gulped.
"There is no shame in leaping from a sinking log, son."
Shardpaw sighed.
"Lakepaw and Greypaw...sir,"
Lakepaw (who was crying earlier) snarled and barred his fangs, "You TRAITOR!"
Shardpaw glared at Lakepaw, while Blackstar ignored him entirely. "Where is Greypaw?"
Shardpaw lowered his head.
"Shardpaw...where. Is. Greypaw?"
"Dead sir," Hailpaw mumbled, her face still bruised from The Thunderclan Medicine cat.
Blackstar lowered his head, processing the death of an apprentice.
"And his body?"
"Outside Thunderclan's Nursery..." Shardpaw answered as Lakepaw shook his head furiously at Blackstar.
"No...sir! It wasn't like-"
"Did you order him to attack kits and queens?"
"Sir I-"
"DID! YOU! TRY TO KILL KITS!"
Lakepaw didn't respond, starting to cry again.
"You said that Thunderclan was getting arrogant! Thinking they could trespass whenever they wanted! And if we could teach them a lesson, then they'd stop!"
"So killing kits and attacking a nursery is your way of making them follow BORDER REGULATIONS?! ARE YOU MENTALLY DFECIENT?! Were you born retarded, or did you take lessons from Thunderclan?!"
Shardpaw almost popped a blood vessel trying not to laugh at the insults.
"Who killed Greypaw?"
"Shimmerpaw..."
The leader sighed.
"Lionblaze's daughter..."
"So? We NEED VENGEANCE! I DEMAND VENGEANCE! OTHERWISE, GREYPAW DIED FOR NOTHING!"
"He did die for nothing!" Dustleap roared, "HE WAS MY APPRENTICE! AND YOU LEAD HIM TO DIE!"
"THAT WASN'T MY FAULT!"
"IT IS ALLYOUR FAULT LAKEPAW!" Blackstar roared. "IT WAS NOT MY NOR ANYOTHER SHADOWCLAN CAT'S DESCION TO ATTACK THUNDERCLAN, IT WAS YOURS!"
Lakepaw looked to Flamehowl and the other apprentices for backup.
But it never came.
"It is high time you face the consequences for your actions."
Blackstar turned his back to Lakepaw, "I was wrong to assume you were ready to be an apprentice just because you were of age. Your still a kit. At this point on you are Lakekit once more."
Lakekit roared in protest, "THAT'S NOT FAIR! I-"
He didn't get to finish, as Dustleap had sucker punched him in the jaw.
Blackstar smirked, "Now now, Dustleap...don't hurt the little kit."
Dustleap smirked back as Lakepaw looked down in shame.
Blackstar sighed, "Now I have to deal with Thunderclan...perhaps there is still time to salvage the situation."
And that's a wrap folks. It's good to be part of a story bigger then just my writing and mind. The Forrestlake Chronicles (ooh that's a good name. Pocketing that...) were similar to this, but THIS story blows that away.
See ya soon!
