Chapter 3: I'd Lie
When the trio had gotten to the small town in Washington they discovered that there was a wishing well in town that was making all the townspeople's wishes come true, with a little sleuthing and a lot of clean up they were able to locate the original coin that set the events into motion and managed to undo all the spells. They were currently on their way back to the hotel room for a little rest before they got back on the road to Bobby's.
Lyanna tied her hair into a ponytail and jumped out of the Impala following Dean and Sam into the room. "So…" she started as she sat on the bed, "I know we're in work mode here, but could we squeeze in just a tiny little bit of sightseeing?" she asked, giving both men her best puppy dog eyes
Sam let out a laugh and glanced at his brother who was shaking his head, "Nope. Those don't work on me, ask Sammy." Dean replied sternly, still not one hundred percent on board with renewing his relationship with Lyanna
"Please?" Lyanna whined, "We're already here… and it's not like we have anything to rush back to Bobby's for, what's another day on the road?" she begged
"Nope." Dean said, popping the 'p'
"C'mon Dean." Sam said, "The hotel is paid for until tomorrow afternoon anyways." he shrugged, "We could go to a bar." he added, hoping the thought of alcohol would sway his brother
Dean looked between the two of them sitting on the bed and groaned, "Alright. Fine." he relented, "We'll go sightseeing for a bit tomorrow. But tonight we hit the bar." he said, with a slight grin
Lyanna shot up quickly "I got dibs on the shower!" she yelled, bolting into the bathroom and clicking the lock on the door before the brothers could protest
Dean frowned "She's gonna be in there forever. Chicks take so long to get ready." he sighed
Lyanna finished washing her hair, humming a little tune as she rinsed the soap off her body. She turned the tap off and opened the shower curtain. She glanced around the bathroom and frowned, in her haste to get the shower first she forgot to grab a towel and her clothes "Crap." she mumbled, pulling the shower curtain around her, "Sam? Dean?" she called, hoping they would hear her
Dean grinned from the other side of the door, he was holding a towel and Lyanna's bag which contained her clothing, "What's up, kid?" he asked innocently
"Well, huh, silly me." Lyanna started with a laugh, "I forgot a towel... and my clothes." she explained, "Could you just slip them in? Please."
"I don't see any towels or your bag." Dean replied, suppressing a laugh, "Looks like you're gonna have to find them yourself." he said
"Dean! Please." Lyanna said, "This isn't funny." she snapped, climbing out of the shower and unlocking the door, at the same time, Dean pushed the door open "Ah! Dean! Cover your eyes!" Lyanna shouted as she scrambled to grab the towel and her clothes and shut the door before Dean saw her in her birthday suit
Dean laughed as he covered his eyes, it was a minute too late and he'd already gotten a good look. He walked away from the bathroom door still laughing, "Ain't nothing I've never seen before." he grinned, sitting on the bed
Lyanna stalked out of the bathroom, dressed and with a towel around her head "You're a jerk." she frowned
Dean continued to laugh, "Actually… that anti possession tattoo is new, when'd you get that?" he smirked, "Nice placement too." he added
Lyanna groaned, "I hate that you've seen me naked." she muttered, "I got it a few years ago. Just in case." she replied "Where's Sam?" she asked
"He went out to grab us food." Dean said, "So does, Jakey, know what that tattoo means?" he asked casually
"No. Jake thinks it's a drunken mistake I got on spring break freshman year of college." Lyanna replied, "And we are not discussing my fiance, ok?" she added, giving Dean a look
Dean held his hands up "Ok." he said, "It was just a question."
"No it wasn't. You're fishing." Lyanna countered taking a step towards Dean, "Did you think I was just gonna pine after you for the rest of my life?" she asked
The playful atmosphere in the room faded, "Hey, you left me." Dean said, "In the middle of the night without so much as a word." he snapped, "Sue me if I'm curious about the man who made you commit."
Lyanna let out a bitter laugh, "You left me first Dean!" she yelled, "You stopped confiding in me. Stopped letting me in, what was I supposed to do? We shared everything. Then one day you just… closed me out." she sighed
Dean frowned as he shook his head "No. That's not how I remember it." he said, "I remember my Dad showed up, we had some stupid fight, and a few weeks later you were gone."
Lyanna let out a frustrated groan, "What do you think that fight was about Dean?" she frowned, "I asked John about the case you were working, and he told me a completely different story than you did. You lied to me. We promised we'd never lie." she whispered
Sam stood in the doorway of the room, not moving cause he could feel the tension in the room, "Woah, what did I miss?" he asked, placing the food down on the table
Lyanna sighed, "Nothing. Nothing important." she said, sitting back on the bed with her knees to her chest "I think I'm gonna skip the bar… you guys go, have fun." she added
Dean stared at Lyanna for a minute. Of course she'd believe John over him, did she really think whatever John told her was the truth. He couldn't really remember the case, but he was almost positive he wouldn't have lied to Lyanna. He loved her more than anything, and he wouldn't have broken that promise to her, "You know what I'm just gonna go myself." he said, "Sammy stay with Lyanna, have a chick night." he added, grabbing a burger out of the bag and leaving the hotel room.
Sam furrowed his brow as he watched Dean leave. He grabbed a bag of food and handed it to Lyanna as he sat down beside her on the bed, "Do you wanna talk about it?" he asked
"Not really Sam." Lyanna shrugged, "It was just-we- Dean and I, don't let us talk about the past ok?" she whispered, "Keep us on the straight and narrow. On finding our solutions." she added
Sam gave a small nod and turned the tv on, he had a suspicion he knew what they'd be talking about, and as far as Sam could gather over the years between John and Dean stories, was that something bad involving Lyanna was going to happen around the time she left. And he was pretty sure whatever Dean had told Lyanna at the time was a lie. But it was a lie to protect her.
It was around 2 in the morning when the door of the hotel clicked open, a drunk Dean stumbled into the room and banged into the table near the door, he quickly straightened up the table and glanced at the bed nearest to him, where Sam and Lyanna were sleeping. Lyanna was under the covers and Sam was on top of them with a blanket draped over his body, just like they had done when they were kids.
Dean trudged over to the empty bed and sat down, his shoulders falling as he took a breath. He should've just gone home with that waitress like he was planning to do, but that little voice in the back of his head, which sounded a lot like Sam, talked him out of it, told him to go back to the hotel and sleep it off. Keep the past in the past where it was supposed to stay. He had to stop thinking about the what ifs. Lyanna was only here to get answers about herself, and she had clearly moved on.
Lyanna had heard Dean bang the table when he loudly entered the room, however she pretended to be asleep since she figured no good would come of trying to reason with a drunk Dean. She kept her breathing steady and she heard Dean sit on the bed across from hers and sigh, then she heard his voice, and if she hadn't been so focused on him she would've missed it
"I did it to keep you safe, Lya. I lied to protect you." Dean whispered, as he ran a hand through his hair, he laid down passing out almost as soon as his head hit the pillow.
"Wake up, Lyanna." Sam said shaking her gently out of her slumber, "Dean says you have ten minutes to get ready if you wanna go do the tourist thing." he added
"I'm up, I'm up.." Lyanna yawned, rubbing the sleep from her eyes, "What time is it?" she asked
"Uh, about 8:30?" Sam replied, "I'll meet you outside." he added, tapping her foot under the covers and leaving the room.
"Is sleeping beauty up?" Dean asked glancing at Sam as he walked over to the car
Sam nodded, "So are we gonna talk about last night?" he asked
"Nope." Dean said shaking his head "Nothing to talk about." he added, "We're just gonna go get some breakfast check out a few attractions then we're going back to Bobby's." he explained
Sam sighed as he slid into the passenger's seat "Act like nothing happened. Sounds about right." he commented
"Exactly." Dean replied, giving Lyanna a smile as she got into the car "Morning sunshine." he said
Lyanna looked at Dean "Morning." she said, "So, what's the plan?" she asked, also adopting the act like nothing happened approach
"Breakfast first, then we can talk about plans. I'm starving." Dean said, driving down the road to a little diner he'd noticed when they got into the Washington
"Oh, Bobby called." Sam said, breaking the silence "Said he found something about the angels."
"I still can't believe angels are real." Lyanna said, "And that you guys are friends with one."
"Not friends." Dean replied shaking his head, "We're just helping him, a means to an end."
The trio got out of the car and walked into the diner, sliding into the booth and placing their orders with the waitress
"So I think we should go to a museum!" Lyanna said as she pulled out her phone, "There's a really cool aztec exhibit at this one." she smiled, showing Sam the website on her screen
Dean snorted, "You're such a dork, no wonder you and Sam always got along." he laughed
Lyanna shrugged, "I just like history, doesn't make me a dork." she said as the waitress brought them their food
"I think a museum could be fun, and it's quick, an hour or so and we can be back on the road to Bobby's." Sam replied, raising an eyebrow when he recognized the woman walking towards their table
"Hi boys." Ruby smirked, sliding into the booth beside Dean, "Who's this pretty little thing?" she asked motioning to Lyanna
"Old family friend." Dean answered, "Lyanna this is Ruby. She's a dem-"
"Yes, I'm a demon." Ruby snapped, giving Dean a look, "But I'm a friendly one." she said, looking at Lyanna "Scouts honor." she added, holding up her hand
"What's up, Ruby?" Sam asked, getting straight to business
"Well I heard some whispers, demons are looking for someone. A girl. Mental patient, apparently talks to angels." Ruby smirked, "I don't know all the details, but I thought this might be something you'd be interested in." she added
"And where might this girl be?" Dean asked, eating a piece of bacon
"A hospital in Ohio." Ruby said, "That's all the info I got, sorry." she shrugged
"I guess it's to Ohio?" Lyanna said, looking between the boys
"Looks like." Sam said, "Rain check on the museum?" he sighed
Ruby snickered, "Really, you guys were being tourists?" she said, "Well blondie you certainly know how to wrap these boys around your finger." she smirked, squeezing Lyanna's hand, "You'll have to teach me that trick." she laughed, giving her a wink as she stood up, "I'll be in touch." she added, before disappearing from the diner
Dean smirked as he looked at Sam, "Never pegged her as into girls." he laughed, "Alright, let's hit the road." he said, leaving money on the table and ushering Sam and Lyanna out of the restaurant
They were walking towards the car when Lyanna heard someone call her name. She turned and gasped "Oh my God." she whispered, her eyes darting as if looking for an exit
"What? What's wrong?" Dean shrugged, turning around as a man about their age approached the group
"Lyanna?" the man asked, pulling her into a hug, "I thought you had family stuff to take care of?" he smiled, glancing at Sam and Dean suspiciously
"I do. I am." Lyanna sputtered, "I was doing some research and-and I ran into these two." she explained, "But, what uh, are you doing here?" she asked, clearly floundering
"Unexpected work trip." the man replied, "Uh, hi, I'm Jake. Lyanna's fiance." he said, holding his hand out to Dean and Sam
Dean's eyes widened and he quickly shook Jake's hand, "Dean. And this is my brother Sam." he said, nudging Sam who looked just as shocked as he did
"Hi, man, nice to meet you." Sam said politely
Jake's eyes narrowed, "Brothers? The brothers Lyanna spent every summer at camp with?" he asked
"Yup. Uh, one and the same." Lyanna said, grabbing Jake's arm, "Can you excuse us for a second." she smiled at Sam and Dean, as she led Jake away from them.
"Wow." Sam said, "That's unfortunate." he said, "What are the chances that he'd be here when we are."
Dean nodded, but wasn't really listening to Sam, he was watching as Lyanna spoke animatedly to Jake, "I guess she's got a type." he muttered, noticing that Jake looked similar to himself, albeit a knockoff cheaper version
"Dean, can you not stare." Sam frowned, "I don't think he really buys the summer camp thing. You staring at her might tip him off."
"I'm not staring at her." Dean huffed, "I'm looking at that hot redhead behind her." he grinned, nodding to a group of girls behind Jake and Lyanna
"There's no redhead there." Sam observed, clearing his throat as Lyanna returned with Jake "Everything good?" he asked
"Yeah, great." Lyanna replied with a forced smile, "So, uh, Jake, honey, I really gotta get back to that research I was doing." she said, "Dean and Sam were gonna give me a ride to the town hall." she lied, "I'll call you later tonight?" she said
Jake faked a smile and nodded, "Sure, baby." he said, "I have a meeting to get to anyways." he added, pulling Lyanna in for a passionate kiss, which seemed to catch Lyanna off guard as she giggled and swatted him away, "Geeze, honey what was that for?" she laughed awkwardly
"Just reminding you of what you're missing." Jake replied, although his eyes snapped quickly to Dean, then back to Lyanna, "Be safe and I'll talk to you later." he added, nodding a goodbye to the brothers and heading towards a tall building down the street.
Lyanna let out a deep breath, "Well that was something I never what to do again." she said
"What? Kiss that creep?" Dean laughed, hoping that if he sounded casual Lyanna wouldn't sense that seeing her kiss Jake made his skin crawl
Lyanna shook her head, but didn't smile "No, I-I don't know why he made a show of that." she stammered. She did. Jake knew her first great love's name was Dean. He wasn't an idiot, he knew who Dean was the second he heard his name. "I mean running into him. I forgot how much lying is involved in this business." she sighed, as she climbed into the back of the Impala
Sam and Dean shared a look, but didn't say anything as they got into the car, "Alright, well maybe you should keep track of Jake's future work trips so we don't have a run in again?" Sam suggested, glancing back at Lyanna, who looked lost in a world of thought
"Uh huh." Lyanna mumbled, "Let's just get to Ohio, I'll give Bobby a call, let him know where we're heading." she said, pulling out her phone as Dean pulled the car onto the freeway.
