"How can this happen?" Derek mumbled, running his hand through his curls.

"Derek, calm down. I know this is different and it will be an adjustment," she tried to calm his anger, he was very rarely angered at anything.

"He is my friend, I just want to kick his ass right now. I don't understand this at all," he shook his head.

"Derek, please don't be mad," Amelia rushed into the room, she had to stop and catch her breath as she looked everywhere for him.

"Look, first you come in this hospital and try to show me up then just three weeks later I find out you are screwing my friends now, just great Amy," he spat.

"Ok, no that is not-"

"Enough. You two are family. Look I know Owen is a good friend of yours and Amelia is your baby sister but don't bring her job into this. You both are equally amazing and your sister just wanted a better opportunity at this hospital. Now you can be mad over this Owen situation but not her bettering herself," Meredith interrupted the two.

"Not now Meredith. You don't get to speak," he shook his head looking at the two of them.

"You don't get to speak to me like that," she yelled before storming out the door, slamming it on the way out. Derek turned to Amelia in anger.

"You can't just come in here and ruin everything Amelia. You're a druggie, you don't get to just stand there and act all innocent," he spat at her.

"Don't you dare say that to me," she had tears in her eyes, "I was a child then. I have grown up, changed. You don't get to use my past to be mad and screw up your own life. I am happy, for the first time in a long time. I came here to escape the perfect Shepherd's as all of you put yourself out to be and you followed me. Don't get mad because Chief wanted better at this hospital."

She stormed off to the door, "oh and by the way, you don't even think of coming after my relationship when you can't even keep one happy," She said before slamming the door.

He grabbed anything he could find, slinging it across the room. He had screwed up, he overreacted and ruined every thing he had built in his short time in Seattle.

...

Meredith cried as she held her stomach, her very bloated bump. She hid it very well under her scrub top to be 7 weeks along. A small knock on the door before it opened.

"I'm sorry, he's an ass," Amelia said as she came into the room and closed the door.

"I don't understand," she shook her head. Maybe she was missing some piece of the puzzle that was there.

"Because you don't know everything. Derek has some dark secrets that he has hid very well, he just can be protective sometimes."

"What? Owen is a great guy, he has no reason to be protecting you?"

"That's not what he's protecting. He never told you?"

"Told me what?" Meredith said cautiously.

"He's protecting Owen. I have a history of going off the deep end and taking everyone with me," Amelia sighed.

"What do you mean?" Meredith was confused, she didn't seem like that kind of girl.

"After our dad died, I was different. When I became a teenager, I stole his prescription pad and to feed my opiate addiction. I overdosed and he found me. He tried to help but I wasn't ready. So I ran, and I got sober and things have been so different every sense then. He saved my life and I turned my back on him," Amelia teared up at the memory.

"I-I had no idea," Meredith shook her head.

"I just want to make him proud of me, that's why I got help and went to medical school," she said honestly.

"He is proud. You have no idea how he talked about you when you were going to help CJ," Meredith said honestly.

"I just, this is the first happiness I had in a long time. My ex overdosed right next to me, in the same bed as me. We had a son, Christoper. He was born with anesephaly. He lived in my arms for 43 minutes. Owen is the first best thing in my life in a long time, I'm not screwing that up," she said honestly with tears. Meredith hugged her tightly, understanding her pain and suffering.

"I have a secret," she said quietly. "I'm pregnant."

Amelia was shocked as she looked at her.

"Really?" She said with tears down her face.

"Yes," Meredith joined her in tears, "and his dad just told me I can't try and speak up to him. I can't be like this, I won't have a man control my life again."

"Hey, no. No crying because Derek is an asshole. He does love you, he was mad and I know he didn't mean it."

"But even if he didn't, he said it to hurt me."

"He said it because he knew the truth and didn't want you defending a druggie as he just called me."

"You are more than that Amelia. You saved my sons life and you don't deserve that."

"I ruined his life for a while, I can take it. He's always been my protector, like my dad," Amelia assured her. There was another knock before Derek poked his head in.

"I'm so sorry," he said to the both of them.

"Amelia, you aren't a druggie. Look I was mad, I didn't want Owen to get hurt. He's had enough pain for more than a lifetime," Derek shook his head.

"Mer, I was wrong for saying that. I didn't mean to. I was angry and I just didn't want you to join in the argument."

"That is no excuse," she shook her head at him.

"Derek, I'm clean, sober. I've been sober for years, I made a career for myself and my life. I'm not going to screw that up. You have to trust me," Amelia pleaded.

"I know. I'm sorry," he hugged her and she returned it.

"And I'm here to keep you on your toes brother, working on a clinical trial now," she winked at him before she left.

"Mer," he tried to reach for her and she back away.

"No. You don't get to come in here with those beautiful blue eyes and just say sorry and the world is fixed. You think I can't have an opinion and tell you when you're wrong?" She was hurt, mortified even. She had never even seen a side of him.

Derek's got some dark secrets

The words spun in her head on repeat. She couldn't stop thinking of what Amelia said. She thought she knew him, she assumed wrong.

"I know. You have a right to be mad. I was wrong, I shouldn't have said that."

"Are you hiding anything?" She said with worry in her voice.

"What? No. I've told you everything important."

"What about the stuff you don't believe is important?"

"Meredith, listen to me. I am not hiding anything from my past. You have to believe me," he pleaded with her.

"I just don't know. I thought you were someone else," she shook her head at him and walked out. She ran into Lexie who had her fave glued to a patient chart.

"Mer?" She looked at her sister, she knew she had been crying.

"Lexie, I don't know what to do," she looked emotionally exhausted.

"Let's go to lunch," Lexie grabbed her sister and led her to the cafeteria. They grabbed a plate and sat down in the corner of the almost empty room.

"Has Mark mentioned any of Derek's past that was, harsh?" She asked.

"I mean, besides the fact that he watched his father get shot, he blames himself for Rose's death, uh no not really. Why? Did he do something? I swear I will kill him," Lexie sped on with her words.

"No. So Amelia and Owen are seeing each other, Derek flipped, yelled at me for defending Amelia then she warned me of some kind of dark secret?" Meredith confessed.

"Did she tell you how she sold their dead father's watch to get her fix? Or the prescription pad incident? Or even the time that she snuck into her mother's jewelry box and sold every piece she had?" Lexie said.

"Yes, I know but she was an addict. I mean about Derek?"

"No, not that I know of?"

"I got to go," Meredith stood up, it was killing her not knowing what she was talking about. She rushed around the hospital to find Derek in his office.

"What dark secret do you have?" Meredith asked him.

"What?"

"The one Amelia said. She said you have some kind of history that seemed bad?"

"Mer. Look it was a bad judgement, I was 25 and mad."

"What?"

"She didn't tell you?"

"No. What did you do?"

"I found out she had been seeing this regular in the hospital I was at my 4th year of medical school, he was the definition of addict. So one night, I got drunk and ran into him and Amelia high off their ass running around town. I decided to do something about it. I beat the crap out of the guy and threaten him. I felt bad, I don't even know what took over me, I guess it was me seeing Amelia just so strung out with that guy and I saw red. Charges were dropped, it was never spoke of again. I don't like talking about it because I am not that kind of person, I don't just go beating up addicts on the streets."

"Oh." She said with confusion.

"I didn't tell you because it wasn't important. I'm not ever going to hurt you or the kids," he assured her.

"No, I mean I get it in a way but still, that is something you mention," she said to him.

"Amelia just knows how to press my buttons, I have this urge to protect her and everyone else from her destruction. She is wild, I just want to believe she has changed," he admitted.

"She has Derek, I mean she saved CJ's life. She hasn't relapsed in years, it's not like she has a reason to now," Meredith admitted to him.

"I know. I just don't want to get my hopes up and be disappointed again."

"She looks up to you, she isn't going anywhere," Meredith said.

"Now will you accept my apology?" He asked.

"Maybe," she shrugged and chuckled a bit.

"Come here," he grabbed her and held her tight for a minute, kissing the side of her head.

"I love you, and you too little guy," he smiled and rubbed her stomach.
