The air was unusually warm for March, it was almost like spring had came early but she couldn't focus on the weather as she hurried from her car into the hospital. She quickly ran into the hospital as fast as she could, dodging nurses and families of patients. She arrived and stood looking into the window of a hospital room, her vision was blurred and it was like a roar of people surrounded her. The words played over and over in her head.

"I'm sorry Meredith, there was a DNR, there wasn't anything we could do."

She just starred at the lifeless body that laid on the gurney. His usually tanned skin had turned a blueish gray color, shoe covers still over his hospital shoes. She couldn't believe it, he was gone. The morning was like any other. Charles had woken before Meredith, he already had coffee brewing when he woke her up to inform her of his early surgery and he had to go. There was a quick, sleepy kiss and he was gone. She would never feel his touch again, his lips against hers.

"What about his patient?" Meredith asked. That's the only thing she could think to say. Her mind was in a haze of confusion and like she was in a dream.

"She made it through, Nelson was called in and he finished the procedure. Is there anything I can do for you? Call Lexie or Cristina?" Richard asked.

"Lexie," she staggered into the room, her body froze when she saw his face. It didn't look anything like the man she loved, he was pale and lifeless. Her heart shattered into a million pieces as she caressed his cold cheek with her hand. The love of her life was laying there lifeless and she wasn't sure how to comprehend it. She wasn't sure she could ever move on.

"Mer," Lexie said, she had been crying. That was all it took for Meredith to fall to her knees, her breathing quickened as she began to beg for this to all be a nightmare. She screamed and cried, it was the worst thing she had ever imagined.

"He can't be gone," Meredith sobbed, her whole world was shattered. She couldn't move, she couldn't breathe. It was like the whole world was collapsing beneath her and all she could do was watch.

"Mer?" Derek said again, drawing Meredith out of her daze.

"Hm?" Meredith continued to stare at the calendar on her phone. One year. It had been one year since her husband had died. She felt guilty, almost like she should feel sadder than she does.

"You ready?" He asked again.

"Yeah," she smiled weakly. He didn't know, exactly what day it was. She wasn't sure the kids knew, and she didn't know if she should do anything about it. She didn't want to make them sad, especially since today was suppose to be a happy day. She was going for an ultrasound, twenty weeks today. This would be the first ultrasound they had since the one before Christmas. She thought it was funny in a sick sort of way, she should be mourning the one year anniversary of the loss of her husband and instead she is going to an ultrasound.

"I wonder if we are going to see if he is really a he," Derek said excited, he moved his hand from hers and to her growing bump, rubbing it slightly.

"Maybe," she had a feeling it was a boy as well, she smiled back at him from across the car. The radio filled the silence between them as they sat quietly.

"Ok, so I don't want to bring it up and be a sad day or anything and I'm sure you don't know but today is the one year anniversary of Charles's death and I wasn't sure if I should bring it up to the kids. I don't want them to forget their father but I don't want to bring down the mood today," she said finally. She hated to say it but he had more experience with this than she did.

"Oh, no. I'm sorry. I wish I had known," he frowned a bit.

"Don't be. I mean I'm sad, maybe it's the hormones or whatever but it seems like it has been longer than a year. I dreaded this day for so long but now that it is here, I don't know. I'm conflicted. I know I should feel horrible and sad. But I can't help but just think about everything I have gained this year and I don't know," she replied.

"It's ok to be ok Mer, I mean I feel like I've known you forever. If you want to cry and break down, that's ok. And if you want to be happy and thankful for everything this past year has brought you, that's ok too."

"I just can't bring myself to be how I imagined it would be when he died. I honestly had no idea how I would ever make it. I know if it wasn't for you and Zoe, my life would be a disaster right now. You've helped me realize there is more in life, that just because you lose someone who you love that there is more. You've made me want more," she said honestly. It was surreal how her mind has changed and developed over the years. Charles showed her she can be loved, Derek taught her what it was like to be completely and utterly in love. A part of her wished that she had met Derek a long time ago but she knew she wasn't ready for his type of love. She had to love Charles to know what love really was. He also gave her two of her biggest blessings in life.

"If you want to do something for it, I'm all for it," Derek smiled. She gushed at how supportive and understanding he was, though she would do the same if he wanted to remember his wife.

"Thank you, I'm just excited to see our future soccer star," she rubbed her large belly, she felt like she was way farther along with how big she was. The baby had very strong kicks, she had began to feel it move around sixteen weeks though you can't feel them on the outside just yet. She knew Derek was excited to feel the baby move, he constantly rubbed her stomach and talked to it.

"So what was your first wife's pregnancy like?" She wondered if he was this excited with Zoe the same way he was with her.

"I hate to say it but it was very dramatic, Rose was diagnosed with hyperemesis at eight weeks, gestational diabetes, and at thirty weeks she had severe cholestasis so she was constantly in and out of the hospital and Zoe was born at 35 weeks. It was scary, I tried to detach myself because we weren't even sure if she was going to make it until she was born and already 6lbs so I won't lie, this is completely different. I was terrified to become a father in my last year of residency," he said honestly. She had an Epiphany at the moment, she realized this was the first pregnancy he was able to enjoy.

"I'm so sorry, I had no idea," she squeezed his hand for comfort.

"It's ok. Zoe was born and she was healthy and that is the best thing that could come from it. I'd be lost without her," he admitted.

"I love the way you love the kids," she smiled over at him.

"I would do anything for our kids, and for you," he pulled her hand to his lips, placing a gentle kiss on the back of her hand. They pulled into the parking lot of her OB office, happily walking hand in hand together inside. She checked in and sat next to him, her hand rested on her large belly. They were quick to be pulled back into an exam room where she laid on the table.

"Good morning Meredith, how are you feeling?" Her doctor said as she walked in.

"Like a whale, when they say you grow faster with the more pregnancies you have they weren't lying," she chuckled.

"Fantastic, any symptoms?" She added.

"Just the usual. My back is really starting to hurt after my shift and my feet have started swelling. I do take my blood pressure regularly to monitor since I developed pre-eclampsia with my last pregnancy but it's been normal so far," Meredith told her.

"Doctors really do make the worst patients," her OB laughed and shook her head.

"I don't think I'm that bad, I just like to stay ahead," Meredith also chuckled.

"Dad, how are you feeling?" She asked.

"Great, fantastic. I'm just going with whatever makes her happy," he winked at Meredith.

"You got a good one Meredith, I'm going to send you over to the ultrasound room so we can get that anatomy scan start," her doctor said and they followed her to the room. There was a large tv plastered to the wall that was connected to the ultrasound machine directly in front of the exam table.

"Did you drink a lot of water?" The technician asked.

"Yes, I've been staying well hydrated."

"Fantastic, have you felt any kicked yet?" She asked as she got everything ready.

"Oh yes, baby is active but not quite on the outside yet," Meredith smiled when she saw the baby appear on the screen.

"It's so big," Meredith stated as she watched the baby wiggle around inside her.

"Yes, a very active baby, do you guys want to know the sex?" She asked. They both looked at each other and nodded.

"Well looks like you're having a boy," she pointed out on the screen.

"It's a boy," Meredith smiled brightly up at Derek. He was mesmerized by the baby moving around.

"Alright, so now I'm just going to take some measurements and print out some photos. Congratulations mom and dad," the tech smiled as she then grew quiet. She was focused in on something on the screen, a look of concern on her face.

"Just a minute," she smiled and excused herself.

"What's wrong?" Derek asked Meredith.

"I don't know, everything looked fine to me," she said. She had read ultrasound before, she had an idea on what to look for and she didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The door opened and her doctor came in with the technician.

"I'm just going to double check something Meredith, hang tight," her doctor smiled at her, but she herself looked a little concerned. They turned the television off and moved the screen out of view as they started the ultrasound again.

"What's going on?" Meredith said, she was worried now. She had never had something like this happen.

"Is that what I think it is?" The technician whispered. Her doctor nodded, moving it more to the side of her hip.

"I think it is," she said, trying to get a better view. She turned the television on once more.

"Meredith, I know you are a doctor so just tell me what you see," her doctor said.

"I mean I see a little arm and spine and -oh," Meredith gasped as she now saw it.

"Is that another baby?" Derek asked. He didn't have much interest in obstetrics so when it was time for there service, he was clueless.

"It is, you guys have what we call mirror twins, baby B is positioned perfectly behind baby A so it's hard to catch. Congratulations you guys," her doctor smiled at her.

"Two? I'm having two babies?" Meredith stuttered as she looked over at Derek. He was surprised, as he just starred blankly at the screen.

"No wonder I'm so huge," Meredith scoffed. She never thought about twins, not once did it ever cross her mind.

"So it's going to take me a little longer on measurements since baby B wants to play hide and seek, just be patient," she smiled at the pair who were just shocked. The sound of the heartbeat flood the room, the pair just watched in awe as baby B kept moving to hide behind it's brother. They laughed as they saw the two moving around each other, seeing baby A squirm as baby B was kicking.

"Alright, so from what I see there are two separate placentas and they are fraternal. Baby B is a little behind but not too far to be concerned about. With twins and your age, it does turn you into high risk so your doctor will want to see you more often. I am going to ask you come back in four weeks so I can get more measurements because you have one stubborn baby on your hands," the tech laughed.

"Could you tell what it was?" Derek asked.

"I could. Looks like you two are going to have a boy and a girl join your little family," she replied.

"Aw, the girls are going to be excited," Meredith smiled at Derek. He smiled in reply, leaning down to kiss her. She cleaned herself up and grabbed her things. She couldn't stop looking at the photos they printed out for her as she walked to the car.

"I can't believe it," she said she she got into the car.

"Me neither," he said to her.

"I was not prepared for that. Twins, I mean really?" She was shocked. She didn't have any twins on her side of the family that she knew of.

"I didn't expect it either, I mean you know Lizzie had the twins but that is the only set we have," he said.

"We are having a boy and a girl," she smiled at him.

"I will forever be surrounded by girls, but CJ and little boy will just have to learn to survive," he laughed.

"Hush," she giggled. They drove to the girls school to pick them up. She was beyond nervous to tell them. There were two babies growing inside her, it was still so foreign to think of it that way. The girls happily hopped in the car, they knew today was they day they found out if they were having a brother or sister but boy were they in for a surprise.

"So what is it?" the two of them said in sync.

"Hello to you to," Meredith giggles.

"Hi mama, so was I right?" Scarlett replied.

"No I'm right, it's a boy," Zoe argued.

"Nu-huh, it's a girl," Scarlett shook her head.

"Boy."

"Girl."

"Alright, so you ready to find out?" Derek interrupted the two. The both nodded, they could hardly keep in the excitement. He looked at Meredith as she looked back at him.

"You are both right," Meredith smiled.

"What?" The both looked at each other.

"It's twins. There's one boy and one girl," Derek clarified.

"There's going to be two babies!" Scarlett squealed.

"There is, do you want to see?" Meredith asked as she handed the two of them the ultrasound.

"you can't really see the girl, she's hiding but there's her foot," Meredith pointed to one of the pictures where there were three little feet in the screen.

"You really are having two babies," Zoe said as she was looking.

"Are you happy?" Derek asked. She nodded.

"Now I get a brother and Scarlett can take care of the girl," Zoe smiled. Meredith and Derek both laughed. The girls were going to be a big help for them and they were both excited.

"You want to call and tell Grandma?" Derek asked as they arrived at the house.

"Yes!" Both girls said in excitement. They hurried into the house, Lexie was there watching CJ while they had went to the appointment. Lexie was able to walk finally but they still hadn't released her for work. She was going crazy, constantly at their house when Mark was at work. She would watch CJ which really helped the pair, she was still on high alert with her pregnancy but everything seemed to be going great.

"Hey girls," Lexie greeted as the came running into the house.

"Aunt Lexie, guess what?" Scarlett ran and jumped on the couch next to her.

"What?" Lexie asked.

"We are getting a brother!" Zoe smiled.

"And a sister," Scarlett added.

"What?" Lexie looked at Meredith and Derek. The two smiled and nodded.

"Surprise," Meredith stated.

"It's twins?" Lexie asked for confirmation.

"It is," Derek nodded.

"Congratulations guys," Lexie got up and hugged the both of them. She had just began to show herself even though she was sixteen weeks.

"Thank you, we are about to call ma," he said as he reached into his pocket to take out his phone.

"I'm going to get going. Congratulations again Mer, and good luck," Lexie laughed.

"Thank you," Meredith chuckled as well. She would definitely need all the luck she could.

Derek dialed the familiar number, it was already 8pm on the east coast so he knew she would be home. He handed the phone to the girls as it started ringing.

"Hello?" Carolyn's voice finally came through the speaker.

"Hi nana!" Both girls said in sync. Meredith smiled at the fact Scarlett was now referring to Carolyn as her grandma. Charlie's parents were a big part in their life and Meredith was glad she now had two grandma's as any normal child would.

"Hey girls, how was school?" Carolyn asked.

"Good, but we have something to tell you," Zoe said.

"You do?"

"Yes, we are going to have a brother and a sister! Mama is having two babies!" Zoe said. Meredith's heart skipped a beat, Zoe had never actually called her mom before now and she felt at ease knowing that Zoe was finally accepting her as a mother in her life.

"What?" Carolyn gasp. Derek grabbed the phone from the girls.

"Yes Ma, we had no idea. The second one was hiding but decided to pop out and say hi. You are getting another granddaughter and grandson," Derek's face gleamed as he said it. He was happy, truly happy that they were having two babies.

"Well tell Meredith I said Congratulations and I can't wait to meet the two bundles of joy," Carolyn said.

"Thank you Carolyn," Meredith spoke up.

"You're welcome honey. If you need anything just call me. Don't be afraid to call, it's getting late and it's almost my bedtime," Carolyn said.

"Bye nana, love you!" Zoe said before she and Scarlett hurried off into their room. It was just the two of them left in the living room, CJ was napping which he never did anymore but Lexie always managed to tire him out.

"I am still in shock," Meredith admitted.

"Me too. Two babies? We are going to have five kids," he said.

"Oh god, that's so many," she said.

"We got this," he smiled, leaning down to kiss her.

"I hope so, we are definitely outnumbered now," Meredith laughed. She couldn't quite wrap her brain around the fact she was having two babies, it was surreal. But something in her knew she could handle it, that she would survive and love all of her children the best way she knew how.
