As they got deeper into the cave Marine fell behind "Will you keep up. It's bad enough we have to take care of one baby" Shadow said. While he was distracted Cream took his chaos emerald and accidently warped herself to a slightly higher platform that she began to slide on. They watched as she went through to another part of the cave as she waved back to them "AAAAHHHH!" they all screamed in unison. They looked over and watched her slide further away, so they all jumped on the ice and followed, Knuckles and Marine started screaming from the burst of uncontrollable speed and even Shadow looked very nervous. Cream was holding her hands up laughing as she was enjoying every second of it. The four of them slid through into different parts of the cave. Marine was able to follow Cream and she picked her up when she got close "I got ya" she said before she slid towards a hole that she promptly fell through causing her to drop Cream who continued through the cave. Marine kept falling until she eventually landed on Shadow's head which she grabbed onto. Knuckles was falling straight down as he used the spikes on his hands to try and slow himself down, but it didn't work, he then fell behind Shadow and the three of them kept sliding. Marine then saw a large block of ice in front of them and she leaned into Shadow's ear "Officer, your captain sees an iceberg ahead!".
Shadow and Knuckles dodged the ice only for them to fall to a lower level where the three of them were now on separate ice slides. They saw Cream in front of them and Knuckles balanced himself so he could catch her. Shadow seeing this quickly hit his feet together causing small jets to shoot out of the bottom allowing him to hover just above the ice. He was able to catch up to Cream but her slide then sloped up launching her into the sky although she didn't seem to see the danger as she was screaming with excitement. Shadow was getting ready to catch her as Marine and Knuckles passed him and not being able to stop themselves from hitting the ice wall and the end of the slide. Shadow was able to catch Cream but since he wasn't looking where he was going, he hit the wall as well. They were all covered in snow and looked dead inside except for Knuckles who happily punched Shadow's arm "Whoa, that was awesome. Who's up for round two?". The others looked at him and he was able to read the room "Oh sorry. Tell-tell that kid to be more careful" Shadow very quickly took the chaos emerald from Cream.
They were at the exit of the cave, but they noticed that they weren't outside, they were in what looked to be an abandoned building, the room looked to be an old office as there were broken chairs, computers and desk covering the floor. The three of them were confused as they entered, and Knuckles saw a sign on the wall it had a G in a circle. He looked curiously at it "Do you guys know what this is?". Shadow stopped "It's Gun. This must have been one of their old bases before it was abandoned" Knuckles could detect slight contempt in Shadow's voice but he didn't ask and the three of them went further through the base. After a while, the three of them went into large room marked open cases that had pictures on the walls. Marine was carrying Cream who looked at one sections of pictures of Gun soldiers on a mission, she looked scared. "Oh, don't worry, it's ok. The soldiers are just making friends with the criminals… Using bullets" she then quickly took Cream away from them. Shadow was heading towards the next door as Marine saw a section of pictures that looked interesting, the title above them said Ultimate Lifeform. She read the notes that said something about a stasis pod still being missing and then she saw a picture of a very young black hedgehog "Hey Shadow, there's a hedgehog here". Shadow really didn't care as he was almost at the door "Oh, amazing. Pinch me" he said sarcastically.
Marine examined more of the pictures "But he looks like you, maybe your related. This one is from fifty years ago on the… Space Colony Ark" Shadow stopped. Marine chuckled "No, you can't be related this one's actually smiling. Aww and he's got a little human friend" she was looking at a picture of the hedgehog with an elderly man in a lab coat and a young blonde girl in a blue dress, the three of them were smiling. Shadow stood next to Marine and Knuckles as he stared with his eyes wide open at the pictures. "You see, Shadow, why can't you be more like that? Laugh, joke maybe-" Knuckles looked at Shadow and he was able to put two and two together "Marine, shut up" Marine looked confused then suddenly understood "Oh" and the two of them watched Shadow. Shadow walked up to the wall looked at all the pictures, he could tell they were from Gerald's logs. Some of them were Shadow in his capsule before he woke up and others were him training with his powers. He slightly smiled when he saw that Gerald also put in some pictures that some would call irrelevant for an experiment. There was one of him being given the chaos emerald for his 1st birthday, Maria and Gerald had baked him a cake.
Another was him and Maria dressing up for Halloween, he was a pirate, and she was Cinderella, the other scientists hid bags of sweets all over the colony for them to find. There was one where Maria was reading him a story to help him sleep, if Shadow remembered correctly the picture was taken when she read him Rudolph. It was nowhere near Christmas at the time, but Shadow could relate to being viewed as a freak for how he was born. Then he saw pictures that he knew weren't from the logs, they were from security cameras. There were Gun soldiers running down the hallways of the colony, tears began to form in Shadow's eyes as he knew exactly when these were taken. The next picture showed his capsule flying through space towards mobius with a small cliff note saying 'Project Shadow still at large' and another picture showed Gerald in custody. Finally, there was one of Maria lying dead on the floor and the sound of a gunshot echoed in Shadow's mind. He continued to stare at the wall as Knuckles and Marine waited in case he needed them. Shadow leaned down slightly, and he affectionately placed his hand over a picture of the girl he considered his sister. Cream walked over and placed her hands on his. Shadow seeing this smiled at the young rabbit and picked her up. She hugged him again and he hesitantly hugged her back with tears running down his face. He eventually stopped and wiped away the tears before heading to the door and Marine followed, Knuckles took one last look at the wall before following them and he felt a twinge of guilt for what he had planned.
