AN: Edited to extend and expand on the work. With changes to Shinji's characterisation to keep him more inline with the main franchise and to make him easier for me to write him and keep up with updates. I have also downgraded Shinji's power slightly, adding a drawback as I disliked the way it appeared. Sorry for the wait.
Exam day
Shinji drifted out of a dreamless sleep. A small monolith rung out, signalling that it was his usual time to get up. His hand lazily swatted at the alarm clock. The alarm clock fell over and continued to chirp. Shinji rolled his eyes and peeled away the soft covers. He leant across his bed and tried to pick up the alarm to turn it off, key word being tried. He had instead tripped and fallen off the bed and onto the wooden panelled floor.
He groaned and pulled himself up. He sat with the alarm in his hand and pressed the silence button. The glowing red light dimmed into a more appropriate white. The time read 6:34. He had gotten a reasonable amount of sleep he supposed. He gently placed the black monolith on his bedside table. It brushed against a book on meta-physiology. Shinji glanced at his calendar and then looked away. His eyes shot back towards the calendar. There in red marker pen, scribbled on was the words "Exam day"

Shinji stepped out of the death trap that was more commonly known as, Misato's car. As he went to close the blue door of the Renault Misato, his adoptive mother, called out to him.
"Do your best!" Her voice was chipper and excitable. "I know you'll pass either way, but show off a little eh?"
"Misato?!," Shinji was embarrassed from Misato's comment about showing off. "I'll try for you"
"That's sweet," Misato's exuberant smile went into a dead straight line as she said "make sure you pick up a girlfriend, yeah!"
Shinji shut the door with a crimson face, utterly embarrassed. Misato's hand waved furiously through the tinted window. The car growled before a column of smoke shot up. The blue sharp car blurred as it went from zero to sixty in 0.4 seconds. Shinji's clothes breezed as the wind harassed his form. He took a step back and did a one-eighty on his heel. A smiled blazed across his face as he walked down the stone laid path. The four glass towers glinted in the sunlight.
He walked at a steady pace down the plain stone path. The shrubs and trees beside him passed him. The place was rather optimistic in tone, with bright colours and shining lights. This was a new start, hopefully a better one than last time he went to a new place.
He passed by many other applicants at the school. Many of them looked interesting enough. Many had quirks that changed their appearance. There were a couple plain looking people. One had green hair and the other had brown. The green boy was quite obviously unable to speak to anyone on the opposite gender. He even was proud of himself when the girl left. Shinji chuckled. It was refreshing to see many people with naïve outlooks on life, he was happy for them. He missed being so happy go lucky for even the smallest of times.
He went through many large and monotonous corridors before reaching his destination. It was a large conference room filled to the brim with eager students. All of them were dressed smartly. Shinji felt out of place. He was sure that each and everyone in this room had a fantastic quirk. Way better than his anyways.
Misato had told him to show off. His quirk was not flashy, it barely counted as a combat quirk. It really only gave Shinji extra movement. However, if he used one of few trump cards… The attack would only work on a very large opponent. He would need to find a way to either scale the attack down or… Or he would have to become more creative which, pointed out by his best autumn haired friend, was extremely limited. Despite all his doubt, he sat down on one of the numerous seats. In front of him was a card. A large capital "C" was emblazoned across the shiny card. His name and quirk were written there. Shinji looked over his shoulder and looked at the blue haired boy with glasses rage over something. He seemed passionate. He had that drive that Shinji so desperately could not find.
After the long and tedious written exams were over the peculiar looking man at the front started to shout enthusiastically. Shinji flicked his wrist a couple times. His cobalt blue eyes scanned the room in front of him. The smart board in front of him displayed four types of robots. A one pointer, A two pointer, A three pointer and lastly the zero pointer. His neutral facial expression faltered when he realised that there was indeed a way for him to paint his ability in a show off way that he so disliked.
He listened more intently to the funny looking man who was embarrassing himself in front of everyone. Shinji rolled his eyes as another one of his jokes fell flat. He guessed that this man had a pretty powerful quirk. Looks can be deceiving and Shinji was a prime example himself. His peer on his right had gotten battle centre G.
He ignored the strange man's squeaks and squalls as he fished around in his plain black backpack. He pulled out a chocolate bar and unwrapped the silvery coating. He took a good bite of the plain chocolate bar. He finished the bar and threw the wrapper away.

Shinji looked at the dauntingly tall gates. He stretched his arms and back before looking behind him. It seemed as though the selection process was through how you looked and what your quirk was. He rather disliked the system in play here. The rest of his peers were rather boring. Shinji toned out before walking towards the door.
SHINJI IKARI
QUIRK: DIRAC SEA
A black ellipse formed on the gate. Black particles flew around the black mass. Shinji, completely unfazed, walks right through the Dirac gate. The Dirac gate throws him into the middle of the faux cityscape.
"Target acquired, Elimination in progress"
Shinji dodged a downward slice from a long metal arm with a simple sidestep. He opened his palm and shoved his arm through a smaller Dirac gate. His hand gripped onto a handle before he yanked out his arm. Centre of the target, pull the trigger. The weapon he pulled out of the limitless dimension was a smaller, scaled down pallet rifle. He held down the trigger as the gun kicked softly against his shoulder.
He jumps upwards, not very far, dodging another flailing mechanical arm that swiped haphazardly at his general direction. He aims the rifle at the glowing red dot of its head before. He squeezed the trigger and the mechanical robots head exploded with a flurry of lights and wires. Shinji dropped the spent weapon through a Dirac gate as he had yet to be told about reloading.
A large tank like robot came into view. A white three was painted on its olive-green plating. Shinji's cold cobalt eyes widened.
Despite being large in size, the three-pointer was still too small for one of Shinji's trump card to come into play. He used another thin Dirac gate to summon a progressive glaive. It had a long pole with a blade on the top. He threw the glaive precisely through the CPU, effectively ending the three-pointers rampage. Shinji felt like he was in EVA again. Not the busting action of an angel fight, where he fought and lost to gain control of the situation but an Evangelion's simulation pod. The flow of battle came naturally to him and the adrenaline rush was addicting. It was mostly in battle that he could find himself smiling.
Shinji summoned a Dirac gate below his feet and he was displaced onto the top of many of the faux buildings. From there he decided where to strike next. He opened a gate and jumped through it. He found himself above three robots.
He landed on one-pointer with a kick and rolled over his shoulder to stop the damage. He charged at a rather sly two-pointer with the short progressive knife. He ducked under the initial swing and jumped up, severing the key wiring from all the key points. The limbs of the robot went limp and the light dimmed. Shinji twisted around began to charge another robot. Only for said robot to be roasted into oblivion. Shinji's steely blue eyes drifted to the origin of such an inferno. His eyes were eventually led to a petite girl who had fire instead of hair on her scalp. Her face was a bit burnt. She was quite obviously out of breath from such an attack.
"Saved ya!" The girl was still bursting full of energy despite being quite out of breath a few seconds earlier. Shinji raised his eyebrow. "you know, from that dangerous robot!"
"Thanks, but…" Shinji scratched the back of his neck "I think I can handle myself" Shinji fell backwards and through his pitch-black gate of Dirac.
He was expulsed out of the Dirac sea at blistering speeds as he cut through a couple of one and two pointers with the sonic glaive he had equipped during his free fall through the Dirac.
He ditched the sonic glaive as another tank-like three-pointer rounded the corner. Shinji pulled out two pallet rifles simultaneously. He dual wielded the bullpup rifles furiously as he jumped over the three-pointer. His rifles always pointing at the rolling hunk of metal. The compressed depleted uranium tore through the metal plating protecting the vulnerable wiring and circuit boards.
As Shinji dashed away, he heard a large explosion behind him. He quickly shot his head round to look at the beautiful inferno of an explosion.
He looked around for a couple more points. He had to save his Dirac energy however as it seemed he might have to deal with the zero pointer, only as a complete back up however.
A large shockwave resounded across the enclosed empty city. Shinji's head whipped around. He began a run towards the shock wave.
He used his gates of Dirac multiple times to get a good view of the hulking zero pointer. It's six glowing red eyes zeroed on him. He noticed that a few people were struggling to run away. Fearing the repercussions from yanking them into the Dirac, he realised that his only option was entrap and kill the hulking machine.
He summoned two large portals. A humungous white hand leapt out of each midnight black portal, crushing the legs and keeping it land locked. The machine spasmed and lurched forward, still attempting to attack the children. Seeing that the machine could still move his body did something without his mind to command it.
A shining sword pierced through the clouds as if it were sent from the heavens. The blade was curved elegantly. The silver metal glinted against the harsh sun. The horrible shriek of metal scraping against metal was heard across the city. A yellow handle became visible as the sword continued its descent. A purple hand came into view. All the students gaped at the situation. The wind shot outwards and blew many people back. Windows shattered and debris was launched throughout the gusty winds.
Shinji's body began to pulse. Black, white, black, white. His vision blurred and he swayed and abruptly collapsed onto the concrete floor.
How's that for showing off Misato?
