How quirky are you?

Shinji drowsily stirred his plain green tea and watched the windows with tired eyes. It was a methodical swirl; his mind was obviously elsewhere.

A loud hissing harassed his ears as his eyes struggled to open. His eyes were glued together as he began to tear through it. A coat of frost was present in front of his eyes. He blinked vigorously, numerous times. The web of ice slowly decayed in front of his eyes. The sheet was gone. His eyes were free. His first use with these eyes where to look around.

WHERE?

The room in front of his defrosted eyes was stale and sterile. He took a step forward. His foot stumbled, not unlike the first time he piloted Evangelion unit 01. His arms shot in front of his face to cradle his fall. He coughed up a viscous orange liquid. LCL he supposed. Was he in an entry plug a few minutes ago? His entire body was stiff, it moved an inch when he wanted to move a mile. He coughed up more of the metallic liquid. It flowed sideways and into a couple dark slits in the ground.

He slowly and painfully manoeuvred himself into a sitting position. Another cough, another spurt of the blood of an Angel. The first sound that came to his ears was a gentle clomp of a person's foot. He began to hear more subtle sounds, like the gentle hum of the air conditioning. The rubbery sounds of latex stretching as well. His head rested downwards in exhaustion. His eyes were led down to the rest of his body.

Countless wires and tubes were connected. A crimson fluid coursed through the veins of these tubes. His legs were in metal braces, the silver glinted against another white, sterile light. He coughed again. He hoped this was the last time. It was revolting. At a grating pace, he lifted his palm into his narrow field of vision. A scar. A circular scar was present on his hand. Numerous spikes encircled the horrible malformed flesh. The scar was a perfect circle. He traced his left index finger around the circle.

HOW?

He would not get that answer.

"SHINJI!"

His head whipped round at the speed of sound. He took a sip of his now mellow tea. Misato was dressed in a black tank top and a midnight pencil skirt. She was shifting her body into her classic red jacket. She quickly swiped the darkest sunglasses from the rack.

"You're late for school," Misato explained the situation, as if an angel had attacked and he was ready to sortie. "and since we don't know what you'll do there you better not waste 20% of your power just getting there."

Shinji's eyes widened as he looked down at his clothing. Somehow, he was wearing the correct clothing. He must have done that subconsciously. He set down the half drunken cup of calming green tea before heading to the door to put his shoes. He zipped up his plain black backpack that was spilling with books of all different colours. He swung the slightly heavy bag on his back. With only one strap on his shoulder he followed Misato in her fast-paced walk. Long strides took the duo through the narrow pale off white walls. Bright white lights were organised in two rows across the ceiling that illuminated the boring continuous hallways.

The stairs circled down to a glass atrium. There were trees as he exited through the glass walkway. Misato led him down to her stylish sea blue car. She tactically entered the driver's seat as Shinji stumbled into the soft leather of the passenger seat. He put the bag by his feet as he laid his head back on the seat rest. He strapped in his seatbelt securely, knowing that Misato was probably going to break every single road safety law.

He sometimes wondered how she managed to learn to drive so… so well? So bad? He honestly could not tell whether her driving skill was admirable or simply that of a maniac. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath as she put her knee-high boot on the pedal.

The car let out a furious growl as it successfully swung out the small quaint parking lot. Shinji was sure the speedometer had done a full 360-degree turn. The car weaved through the traffic as both the laws of driving and physics were completely shattered. The inbuilt GPS pinged Misato to do a harsh right. She let off the gas pedal, slowed the car down with harsh braking and swerved the car to the right. The rear swung out and Misato steered the opposite way to make sure that she counter steered correctly. She completely ignored the speedlight as the car twisted through a nigh impossible arc.

She stomped on the accelerator in a rough manner, pushing the engine in the rear to its limits. The car accelerated exponentially before reaching a speed of 150 mph. The car breezed pass any other car on the road as it swerved softly and delicately. The pair were cruising along a straight before they would reach the city and so Misato decided that this would be the perfect time to ignite the spark of a conversation between them.

"So, exited?" She dodged a black Prius before filtering back into her lane.

"It's a popular school which only allow a small percentage of people to enter, so you'll meet some other powerful students!" Misato's tone was jovial as always, lighting up Shinji's dark moods.

"I'm pretty sure they'll all just be stuck up." Shinji stated. He had gotten used to the reality that the people with the strongest quirks, always were overconfident. He looked down at his clenched fist.

"I'm sure some will be humble!" Misato was always optimistic. It was how she had delt with these misgivings in life. Shinji smiled at that. It was a healthy coping mechanism.

"One can hope I guess," Shinji said. His mood had significantly improved as they say the bumbling city.

The car swerved down a cross section, leaving black tire marks behind it. Misato's control over the car was unrivalled as she dodged a couple passing cars. Her delicate fingers were tightly wrapped around the steering wheel as she vigorously shifted the car from left to right.

As they were on a straight Misato decided to start a conversation again.

"I'm sure you'll be great!" She beamed at him, "Your quirk is uber powerful!"

"eh, it needs some work."

"That's why you're going to school!"

Shinji chuckled whilst scratching the back of his neck. She was right. It seemed rather silly now, the doubt. Old habits die hard he guessed. He rested his head on his hand as he watched the city blocks go by. Peacefully taking in the city skyline. His eyes glossed over as he returned to his thoughts with barely any consciousness in his physical body.

Misato handed him his phone and said her goodbyes. Shinji stood on the side walk, waiting to wave goodbye. The wind displaced from the car brushed against his blazer. He smiled and waved at the speedy blue car. He walked down the concrete path, contemplating where he was.

U.A. It seemed like such a grand place. The school that pumps out promising new heroes every year. A place where the students were famous before they had already graduated. The school where the greatest hero supposedly went to. He still did not know who that was however. After all, he only knew the basics of this society. He supposed the basics would have to do for now. He could learn all the rest later.

He walked until he reached the large door of class 1-A. He opened the door to a…

Normal classroom?

He looked around him. He was sure he was in the right place. It was odd. To have such an ordinary room for perhaps the most unordinary high school. He blinked a couple times. He looked around the classroom before spotting a familiar face. It was the colour spilt guy!

"So, I guess your training paid off if you got into U.A!" Shinji exclaimed to the rather passive teenager in front of him. "That test was kind of hard"

"I got in through recommendations," His voice was calm and collected "I am unaware of what you faced."

"You must be really talented if you got in through recommendations, I look forward to fighting with you!"

Suddenly the spiky haired blonde in the front started to yell at a rather plain green haired boy. Shinji rolled his eyes at the scene before him. It seemed like the situation between him and Asuka. Although this seemed to be favoured way more in the hate side of a relationship. Honestly, he thought it was rather cute.

The teacher was still in a sleeping bag when he arrived. Shinji smiled at this, he felt like doing that some days too. It seemed very smart. However, he probably would get really scolded by a certain purple haired ex-major if he did such a thing. He took his seat calmly. He was two seats away from the only boy he knew. In-between them was a beautiful girl with a pitch-black pony tail. The pony tail itself seemed to spiral and added quite a large amount of height to her build. He rested his head on his hands, mushing his cheek upwards in an unflattering way. He listened on to the black-haired, sleep deprived man go on about how class worked.

"Today we will be doing a quirk apprehension test"

Most of the class gasped in shock. Shinji looked on impassively. He supposed that this would finally be the time where he would be able to see the others quirks and judge how powerful they were.

Shinji changed into the sea blue sports uniform. The design was rather fitting and had a white A shape embodied across the front. He shifted a hand through his messy hair as he made sure that it was out of the way. He looked at his fellow classmates before the mummy man appeared once again.

"I'm sure you've all done these tests before. However, this time you will all be able to use your quirks. It is rather backwards of society to not push the human limits." The man, Aizawa-sensei, seemed bored and irritated at the response of his numerous students. His eyes narrowed as he hissed out his discontentment about the excitement of others. Stating that it was illogical or something.

He handed over a baseball to the anger-management-issues kid and told him to throw the ball as far as possible, using his quirk however he liked. As long as he did not leave the throwing circle, he would be allowed the throw. It seemed simple enough. Blonde spikey pulled the ball back with his arm. He then through the ball using what seemed to be an explosion quirk on his palm.

"DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Everyone took a step back at his rather criminal war cry. Shinji and the split guy simply raised an eyebrow. Is this okay? It seemed that even Aizawa-sensei was puzzled by such a scream. After all, this was a hero academy, not a villain one.

"705.3 metres"

"First we will do the 50m dash."

"Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention, but the person who comes in last is expelled."

That set a fire going.

Shinji got himself a number, 16. Oh well, he supposed it would do for now. He was teamed up with half and half, Todoroki Shouto. He learned his name from the calling out of order.

He watched as many students used their quirks in glamorous and effective ways. He gauged that quite a lot of this class was indeed strong. The plain brown-haired girl, had run quite boringly though. She had shown literally no sign of a quirk. He sighed at that. It was his turn next anyways.

He readied himself at the start line. Show off. That's what Misato had told him to do. He still didn't really believe that doing that would gain him any true friends. He himself hated those who did. The whistle blew. He shot off. He created an oval gate in front of him. His vision distorted and swirled before he was spat out at the finish line. The robot called out his impressive time of 0.5 seconds. Todoroki came in a couple seconds afterwards. He had displayed his ice quirk well, using it to propel him forward, using it as a path.

He gave the icy boy a thumbs up. "You won that; I feel like I cheated on that one."

"I just need to get better" He was determined.

"That's why we're here!"

"Perhaps"

The next event was the standing long jump. Another simple event for him. Many used their quirks in interesting ways again. The angry spikey boy used his explosions to propel him forward at a reasonable speed. Todoroki projected and ice pillar from the ground that launched him well. The green haired boy from earlier seemed as if he were truly quirk-less. He rolled his eyes. It reminded him of well, him really.

He looked warily at his teacher who was judging the test.

"How far is the maximum?" Shinji asked gingerly.

"However far you can go, this is to test your limits."

Shinji pondered for a bit. His maximum range was around 613 metres. If he jumped before hand, he may get another two or three. He sighed and went as planned. In the end, he had only jumped roughly one and a half metres without his quirk, leaving him with 614.5 metres in length for the standing jumped. It may have been the best score, but it was far from efficient. As his hands began to have black spots appear and swirl upon them. He blinked a couple times before walking back. It was only when he was near the starting point that he realised that there had been a sand pit.

Now he had the grip test. He groaned inwardly as he knew that he simply had a normal body. No tricks up his sleeves for this one. He looked at the rather disappointing score. He simply did not have the muscle required for such an examination. After all, he was still the underweight boy that he had been during his days with NERV. He watched everyone else. He hoped that this would be as quick as possible as some doubt began to creep up on him. Todoroki, the ice-fire guy, looked his way and raised an eyebrow. Shinji simply shrugged and sat on one of the numerous benches. Feeling the shame of his score in full force.

Next on the list of pain was the repeated side steps. Again, Shinji could not think of a way to use his power without exhausting his body completely and simply decided to do it quirk-less. Again, another normal score, same with the endurance.

Finally, they finished the quirk apprehension test with the ball throw. Many used their quirks in fantastical ways. When it came time for his turn he stood there, contemplating what he should do. He stared down at the ball. He remembered the one time he was at Kensuke's house and played some video game with him. Portal 2! They positioned the portal so that they could get terminal velocity before firing the object, or person, off at that velocity. This time he just had to remember the correct angle to launch the ball off. He opened two Dirac gates, Alpha and Beta. He dropped the ball through Beta, the bottom one, and it zoomed through Alpha. Through Alpha it went through Beta. Through the forces of gravity, the ball became faster and faster. He placed Alpha at a 45-degree angle and the ball was launched at terminal velocity. The ball flew through the sky, cutting away the harsh winds.

"1.01 kilometres."

Shinji smiled at that. It seemed like a really good score, not as good as the gravity girl. But still good. The spikey haired blonde was throwing yet another fit. Shinji stood next to the stoic Todoroki and watched as the green haired kid looked shocked after he threw his ball.

"I erased your quirk" The tired form of Aizawa-sensei explained to the plain boy.

"You still can't control it."

The boy looked rather dejected.

Sensei chucked him another ball and told him to do it again. The kid looked down at the ball for a moment, dumbstruck. He then threw the ball with a strange sensation of determination. His finger lit up for a second. The ball shot out like a cannonball.

The entire class was held aback by the ridiculous amount of air pressure and wind that was directed all around. All this from a finger. Shinji knew he was out of that kid's league and had no hope of catching up. That power, from such a small source. It seemed ridiculous. Not even the boy's own power could be contained safely within the boy, his finger was now a purple mess of flesh with the bones fractured and shattered in every way possible. Another wave of self-doubt breezed through his thoughts and mind. What if everyone had power like that. What if everyone was simply holding back? What if everyone had a trump card like that. The kid could still use his other fingers. Shinji would exhaust half of his energy supply by using one of his few trump cards.

It was not a nice day for Shinji Ikari.
