Thank you all for your kind comments about the previous chapter! The reviews make me so happy. Here is a short little drabble about Reade and Tasha finding out she is pregnant in the bunker. Enjoy!
She slumps down onto the ground and rests her head against the bunker wall with a sigh.
"We'll get through this. It'll be okay, no matter what that test says." Reade tells her, sitting down next to her.
On the one hand, she can't believe that they were so stupid. On the other, they were in a safe house and did not have readily available access to birth control, so she can understand why they had this little slip-up. The first time it happened, while they were in the safe house, it was fast and heavy and needy. They had wanted each other for so long and both were all in, finally.
After that, they fell into an easy rhythm. There was not a lot of time for privacy in the new bunker and they tried to be respectful of the fact that there were four other people living with them. But they tried to find some moments for just them to give them some sense of normalcy through all the hecticness.
She enjoyed whatever it was they had. They hadn't had the typical "relationship talk" but they didn't need to. It was not like either of them had other options or it would not matter if they did. They spent most of their time off together, stealing kisses and talking about a life where they were not wanted fugitive and they could just be.
She rests her head on his shoulder, not sure of what she should say. A week ago she confided in him that she was late and she was concerned she might be pregnant. He was practical through and through and told her they should get a test before either of them started to freak out. They decided they would wait until either one of them had landed on the "Shopping" task on the chore wheel that Patterson created. Thankfully, today, it was his turn to go.
So now, they sat there, stick in her hand, fear in her heart. It was not that she did not want kids. It was just that now was probably the worst time. They were on the run as fugitives and they had only been together for a few months. She was scared this would be a hardship on the team and on them.
He lays his hand over hers and squeezes it. "It'll be okay."
"In case you have forgotten, we are fugitives living underground. Not exactly the best place to raise a kid."
"So we adjust the plan and we make it work." He says simply and she is sure he must be freaking out on the inside but trying to stay calm for her. "We've been through lots of hard things."
"Are you mad?" She asks.
He raises an eyebrow at her. "I don't think I get to be mad when I had an active part in this."
She knows he is trying to be funny to make her feel better, but the weight of everything going on right now is heavy and she can't seem to appreciate the joke. "I'm serious."
He sighs. "Does the timing suck? Yeah. But I meant it when I said I'm all in. That's true if we get out of this bunker tomorrow or we die in here. And it's true no matter what that test says."
She gives him a small smile and she is thankful that he is the person she is doing this with, because she truly thinks she could not have done this without him. She doesn't know what she hopes for the test to say, but she knows he will be sitting with her no matter the result, and that's enough for her.
"You think it's been two minutes?" She whispers.
He kisses her softly and says. "We'll be okay."
She flips the test over and tilts it so they both can see. The air leaves her lungs and time seems to slow as she looks at the test and sees two little lines.
It's positive.
They sit in silence and she stares at the test, unsure of what to say. When she looks up at him, his face is a strange mix of shock and fear and joy. She wants to cry and she is not sure if it's from joy or fear and all she can think is what in the world were they going to do now.
"We're having a baby." He whispers in disbelief.
She nods her head. "We're having a baby and we are wanted for terrorism."
He turns to her and rests his forehead on hers. "Look, I'm terrified, but can we think about reality later. Let's just be happy for a moment, okay?"
She is unsure of how to be happy when she is so scared, but then she looks at the man in front of her and she imagines a real life with him outside these bunker walls. She imagines a life and a house and a child that looks just like him. For a moment she allows herself to hope that their life on the run won't last forever and they can have a life that is happy.
A life where they can be a family.
"We're having a kid." She breathes out and when the words leave her mouth, her heart jumps a bit, because, even though the timing is the worst, she loves him and they are having a child.
"We got this." He hums. "It'll be okay."
When she looks at him and sees the hope in his eyes, she forgets for a second that they are fugitives. She believes that maybe for once things will work and be okay. He's got her and she's got him and as long as that was true, things would find a way of working themselves out.
They always did.
