Here is a one shot that popped into my head, so I decided to write it. The OC's Rayner and Nick, and the mentioned character of Dr. Mitchell are mine. Everything else is Disney's. I hope you all enjoy this.

Playing Tourney

The one thing Rayner had always dreamed of doing in high school was playing tourney. His dad, Jay, and Carlos made it look so fun back in the day, Rayner just wanted to be like them. He was fourteen now, why couldn't he play?

He went home and put the try out flyer on his father's desk, looking at him with hopeful eyes. Ben glanced at Rayner. "You already know the answer, Buddy, no." He said.

Rayner's face fell. "But Dad, why not?"

"You know why. Dr. Mitchell said you can't play tourney, not with your heart." Ben reminded. Playing tourney is really the only thing Dr. Mitchell had ever forbid Rayner from doing, and to the young prince, it was unfair.

"Nothing will happen to me." Rayner argued.

"You can't be sure of that." Ben countered.

"I-" Rayner started.

"Rayner." Ben warned. "Listen, I'm sorry that you can't play tourney, but there are other sports you can do."

Rayner grabbed the piece of paper and left. He was going to find a way to play tourney. The next day Rayner stayed after school. This wasn't unusual, sometimes he liked to do his homework in his silent dorm room, but today it was because he was attending try outs.

When Rayner got to the field his friend Nick ran up to him. "Awesome! You're here Ray!" He exclaimed. "But I thought you couldn't play tourney."

"I can, technically. I have to talk to the coach though." Rayner told him.

"Well, I hope it works out for you." Nick said.

"You too. Good luck." Rayner made his way over to the coach as Nick ran back to the other students. Rayner explained to the coach his situation, and together they talked though the options. Soon, with the help of one of the assistants, Rayner was learning how to the dragon canon worked, and he wasn't that bad.

They were promised that on Friday they would find out who made the team. To Rayner's surprise, he was one of them. He got all of his equipment and went home, excited to share his news.

"Dad, look! I made the team!" Rayner yelled, running into Ben's office wearing his Auradon Knights jersey.

Ben was shocked for a moment, but quickly recovered. "Rayner, you know you can't play tourney." Ben began.

"I'm the canon shooter, in charge of the kill zone." Rayner explained. "Coach said that there is an almost one hundred percent chance that I will never get hit or tackled or anything like that."

"Almost one hundred percent chance?" Ben repeated. Rayner nodded. "Then congratulations. I'm proud of you, Buddy."

Rayner and Ben shared a hug. "Thanks Dad, and you don't have to come to my games, I'm not doing anything exciting."

"Are you kidding? I'm not going to miss a single one." Ben promised. "Now let's go tell the others and celebrate." Father and son left the room and walked down the hallway, talking about the upcoming season.
