I have decided to give Rayner a dog. This one shot is nothing like I've written before. It is little moments through time of Rayner and Jersey. Warning, this has a very sad ending. If you would not like to read that part, you don't have to, you can just read up to that point. The ages given is the age of Jersey at the time of the event. The OCs Rayner and Jersey are mine and everything else is Disney's. I hope you all enjoy.

Good Old Jersey

Age: 8 Weeks

While Mal wasn't one hundred percent on board with the idea, Ben was coming home with a Husky puppy as a birthday present for their son Rayner.

Rayner opened the gifts from his family and close friends till there was only one left. In the last gift was a collar, food bowls, a leash, and some toys. The four year old looked at his parents confused. His face lit up though when Ben came out holding a squirmy little puppy.

"This is your dog, Ray. And because you're still young, your mom and I will help you take care of him." Ben explained.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Rayner exclaimed, hugging his parents.

"You're welcome, now, what are you going to name him?" Mal asked.

Rayner looked down at the puppy in his arms. "Jersey, his name is Jersey." He replied.

Age: 2 Years

"No Jersey!" Rayner yelled. Jersey looked up at the young boy, a chewed up shoe still in his mouth. It was one of Rayners good dress shoes. "Drop it!"

Jersey instead ran around the room with the shoe. "Do you want to play?" The dog came up to him. Rayner grabbed a rope like toy, which Jersey immediately dropped the shoe and pulled on the toy.

Rayner threw the shoe off to the side. He would deal with that later. He played tug a war with Jersey for a few moments before winning.

"Come on, let's play outside, and no more eating my shoes!" Rayner walked out of his room and Jersey obediently followed him.

Age: 6 Years

Rayner walked through the door having just returned home from school. Jersey excitedly greeted him, jumping up on Rayner. "I'm glad to see you too, boy."

Jersey was still barking frantically. "Okay, okay." Rayner took out a handful of small treats from his pocket, he always carried some around. Everyday when Rayner came home from school they would do this and every time Jersey did the trick he would get a treat.

"Okay, now sit." Jersey did as he was commanded. "Paw." Jersey put his left paw in Rayner's left hand. "Other paw." Jersey's right paw was immediately in Rayner's right hand.

"Lay down." Rayner ordered, and Jersey did. "Roll over." Jersey listened and rolled over. "Play dead." Jersey laid on the floor with a paw over his eyes. Rayner got on the ground and pet Jersey. "Good boy." He praised.

Age: 9 Years

Ben and Mal were walking to their room, about to go to bed, when they realized that the light in Rayner's bedroom was still on. This was unusual, so the two decided that they would check on him. What they found made them smile.

Rayner was sleeping in his bed with a book laying on his chest. He must have fallen asleep while reading. Next to him was Jersey, who was also sleeping.

Mal and Ben went into the room, putting away the book and tucking Rayner and Jersey in before leaving themselves and going to bed.

Age: 14 Years

Rayner sat at his desk looking over some papers for his meeting with the Council of Sidekicks. It was late, he probably should go to bed, but he would continue to work. He pet the dog that was laying by his feet. "Old Boy, some days I wish I could just spend the whole day for you like I used to."

Jersey seemed to whine in agreement. The two sat there through the night continuing to work.

Age: 15 Years

Rayner knew that the day would come eventually, but never wanted to think about it. It was the first time since Rayner had become king over 18 months earlier that Jersey didn't join him in his office. Rayner wrote it off as he was tired, Jersey was an old dog, it shouldn't be surprising.

But when Rayner hadn't seen Jersey all day he was getting concerned. After the workday ended Rayner went to his room, where he found Jersey still laying on his bed, he had barely moved all day, not even getting up to eat. Rayner walked over to Jersey, petting his fur. "It will be okay, old boy." Rayner then went to find his parents. They were in the living room, and clearly could tell that Rayner was upset.

"What's wrong Buddy?" Ben questioned.

"It's- I- I-" The young kings voice broke. "I think it's time." Ben and Mal's faces fell. Mal got up and hugged Rayner. "I'm sorry, Ray, but let's go to your room, Jersey won't want to be alone right now." Rayner nodded, and the three went to his room.

Rayner sat on the floor by his bed, raking his fingers through Jersey's hair. They were silent for awhile, till Rayner knew they were near the end. "Paw." Rayner said. Jersey looked at his owner through sad eyes and put his left paw in Rayner's outstretched hand. After a few moments, Jersey closed his eyes and Rayner knew he was gone. Ben and Mal gave him awhile to grieve.

"We should take him to the vet, Buddy, they'll know what to do now." Ben told him. Rayner nodded, picking up his much loved dog before leaving somberly.

A couple of weeks later, Rayner received a small clay tablet with Jersey's paw prints in it along with his name. Rayner put it with a picture of the dog on his desk, so he would always have his loyal husky with him.
