Daphne Keegan, District 11, 14
Last year, Daphne dodged her death. Would she be this lucky again? Calmly, she started reading a book, The Hunger Games, hoping that a Peacekeeper wouldn't catch her with an illegal book in her hands.
Daphne needed to soak up all the knowledge she could get if and when her name was chosen.
"Halt!" said a Peacekeeper, that had caught a glimpse of the book. "Little girl, you know you should not have this. Where did you get it?"
She hesitated, but then had an idea.
"Sir, I promise you, I will win the Games, and if I don't tell you where I got it from, I will reward you with some of my prize." she said.
"Sir, I promise you, I will win the games, and if I don't tell you where I got it from, I will reward you with some of my prize." Daphne said.
The Peacekeeper's eyes gleamed with greed. "It's a deal." he said, leaving Daphne to walk away unharmed.
The consequences of her deal hadn't quite processed in her mind until another Peacekeeper took Daphne's blood. keeping her secret book society unknown meant volunteering herself as female tribute for the Hunger Games. She had to win. Her heart pounded against her chest as she was led towards the Girls, 14 section, where she was cramped in the middle of dozens of innocent citizens.
Daphne stared up at the joyful announcer as she pranced about the stage, taking her place. This was it.
She watched as Ronnie, the escort, placed her right hand in the orb of names. Daphne took a deep breath. "Give it up for our girl from District 11, Rue!" Something clicked in Daphne's head.
Could this girl be related to the Rue from the book that she had read earlier? It was already her plan to do so, but now she felt ore compelled to do it. She pushed her way through the crowd and said, "I volunteer as tribute," as she listened to the murmured dissent of her not having a good enough chance.
To earn their silence, she raised three fingers in the air, whistled the infamous Rue's Whistle, and wrestled her way out of approaching Peacekeepers.
"You live a long and happy life, okay?" Daphne whispered in Rue's ear as she made her way upstage.
"What's your name dear?" asked Ronnie as she took my hand. "Daphne Keegan," she answers back. Daphne didn't even glance at Ronnie, but she knew that she was picked out a male tribute to compete to the death.
"Cheer for our boy from District 11, Lucas!' announced Ronnie.
Daphne thought it couldn't get any worse, but it certainly did right there and then. She didn't want her crush and the biggest member of the book society to die.
