The next two days were spent decorating, baking and getting ready for the feasts of the following days. It was Christmas Eve morning before Hermione realized she had nothing for Ron for Christmas! With the family already starting to arrive, she knew she had very little time to pull something together.
"Mrs. Wea- I mean Molly, do you have any errands you need to have run?" Hermione asked as she lowered her voice, "In all of the excitement of things lately, I completely forgot to get Ron's present! So I need to run out and find something."
"Oh dear! Well no I don't need anything… What did you have in mind for Ronald?"
"I'm kind of struggling… I was thinking something related to ..." she trailed off pointing to her stomach. "Maybe something from a quidditch store or something!"
Molly thought for a minute, before strutting up to Ron's room, "Now I think I have something for you… Don't worry dear I have the boys de-gnoming the garden!"
As she walked into the room, Hermione was thankful she had tidied this morning. Molly started searching through the closet for something.
"Perfect!" Molly exclaimed, pulling out a pile of old Chudney Cannon and Gryffendor shirts. "Maybe we can make a little baby blanket out of these? If I heard Ginny right she said you may be telling the rest of the family Christmas morning?" She said with a grin.
"Oh that would be perfect! But do we even have time to get it done?" Hermione questioned, slightly nervous about giving Ron a gift relating to the baby in front of the whole family.
"Oh yes dear… Don't you worry a hair on your head about it, you know that is not good for my grandchild!" Molly said, "How about you worry about a note to go with it, and I will get my enchanted sewing machine on it?"
"Thank you so much Molly, this is perfect…" Hermione said, already getting worried about the note.
Molly bustled out of the room with the shirts floating behind her as Hermione pulled out a piece of parchment. Going through four drafts, Hermione finally felt like she had it. She tucked the out of sight, ready to be packaged up with the blanket when it was complete.
As she headed downstairs, she found an empty kitchen which rarely occurred in the Weasley house. Poking around, she made a small sandwich involving turkey, cranberries and chocolates, the first of her craving concoctions she was convinced Ron would enjoy. As she sat down at the table to eat, the front door swung wide open as Ron came in, covered in snow and dirt from his chores in the garden. After stripping off his jacket and leaving his boots at the door, he plopped down next to Hermione with a kiss on the cheek.
"I think -swallow- you'd really like this" said Hermione as she handed Ron the sandwich.
Without questioning, Ron took a bite. With a questioning look on his face he tried to process what his girlfriend had just fed him, "Is that chocolate with turkey?" clearly not that upset by the combination as he took another bite.
Swatting him on the shoulder, she scolded him, "Go make your own! You're now stealing food out of your child's mouth"
He sheepishly handed her back the sandwich as she giggled. "You know Mione, there is something we really haven't talked about since… well since everything"
She looked at him with a questioning look but said nothing.
"Us." He said, her still looking confused. "I know we haven't been together that long now, but I mean we both know this is real? We're having a bloody child together and we love each other. everyone else knew we were meant to be before we did-"
"Ronald, slow down." she said, gently grabbing his hand.
"Well, I mean would it be completely out of left pitch to talk about us getting married? We've skipped so many steps of a relationship already… I just don't want to skip that."
Hermione took a beat. She hadn't exactly seen this coming, but then again, she hadn't seen a baby coming right now either.
"I… I want that," Her voice wobbled as she pulled her thoughts together, "And I don't have any doubts about us. I mean we've been through it all together… But that doesn't mean I'm not a bit scared?"
"Scared?"
"Well yeah… I mean when you left, which you know I forgave you for, I can't help but wonder if you could leave me, and this baby, again." Hermione finished, looking down with tears in her eyes, too nervous to look Ron in the face.
Ron felt crushed, just knowing that she thought he was capable of leaving her again.
"Mione," he took a deep breath, knowing he had to say this just right. "Leaving you and Harry was the worst thing I've ever done. I know I left, but it was also me being manipulated by Voldemort's locket. In my right mind, I couldn't do that ever again… It's impossible!"
"Bloody hell," Ron said, grabbing Hermione's hands and bringing them to his lips. "I love you so much Hermione I can't imagine my life without you. And our baby is a whole different story." Hermione softly giggled at that, "Mione, it's you and me and our family. That's all that matters to me, and I could never ever abandon that again."
Hermione looked at Ron, with both of them having tears in their eyes, she moved over and sat on his lap and kissed him. Not a sweet peck or a chaste kiss, but a kiss that reminded them both of their first together down in the Chamber of Secrets.
Whispering to her, Ron asked, "Would it be okay if I started thinking about proposing?"
Tears fell from her eyes as she nodded her head while clutching to him. "I love you, Ron Weasley."
