Summary: After Apollo became godly again, our favourite close-demigod-friends grew apart, moving to different states to start their lives. But when Percy meets a familiar face down in Houston, Annabeth runs into a dude chuckling about yogurt in Walmart, and Piper meets a goth chick beating up random thugs, a lovely camp reunion is in order.
So erm...I love reunion fics, and this idea has been in my head since I first read BoO. But then with ToA I wanted to see everyone's reaction together.
There's gonna be fluff and little angst(with Leo).
This is in an AU where Leo never helped Lester and Jason never died or broke up with Piper. I kept that for simplicity's sake. All ships are canon from BoO but I might put some pansexual-Piper in, coz that's fun. I'll try to keep everyone in character though.
The only non-canon ship is Theyna(Thalia/Reyna), I love Emmie/Jo's love-story, and I think this is a lot like that.
Anyways, R&R and enjoy the show!
...
Percy smiled softly as he overlooked the crashing waves. It had been a long day. He had left most of the negotiating to Rachel(turns out finishing school was good for one thing) but finally they could conduct their clean-up of Galveston Bay. Texas was an environmentalist-state, alas oil spills pop-up and the environment can never be too clean, eh?
He had been doing this for years now. Rachel was so excited when Percy suggested the idea of an environmental group. Annabeth, now a successful architect, fully supported her newly dubbed husband. Him and Rachel, with Annabeth tagging along most of the time, toured the world, cleaning up trash and giving speeches. Percy was an inspiration. Mentally disabled young-adult with a head full of dreams for a green world. You couldn't make this up. He and Rachel had won a Nobel Peace Prize together! Grover was, of course, the manager of the whole thing. He said where it was necessary, and that's where the group went. They called themselves 'The Pan Crew', which was obviously a tribute to the god and not homosexuality.
But to go back even further-no. Percy never dared to think of his past-life. It was him and Annabeth's way of coping about the pit, and how the two never broke down crying over their friends' dead souls. Maybe it wasn't healthy but, neither of the Jacksons wanted to go into therapy. Especially as therapists are usually monsters and if they weren't, demigods couldn't exactly discuss their lives with mortals without a lovely holiday to an asylum. Sometimes, Percy subconsciously rubbed the colourful clay beads that hung around his neck. Sometimes, Percy had idle conversations with random sea creatures they came across, asking about his father. Sometimes, Percy's thoughts drifted to his old friends and how they were doing.
nt; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"Percy and Annabeth had lost contact with other demigods after he had bluntly told the gods to stop butting into his life in the wake of Apollo becoming a god again. Rachel had decided not to stay as the camp's resident hippie, ditching the oracle-gig after she gave her last prophecy to Will and Nico. She didn't want to always be the bearer of bad news. Apollo had nodded sadly, as if he had expected this(god of prophecy, duh). After talking it out with Lou Ellen, the daughter of Hecate took Rachel's spot and Rachel became a normal mortal again. Well, as normal as Rachel Elizabeth Dare could be. Satyrs were insulted how the fauns were treated and made a point of it. When it was threatened that nothing would change, they went on strike. Grover was enraged and encouraged his fellow companions to stand up for themselves. The young-adult generation of satyrs/fauns literally got up and left. The younger ones didn't know much about Grover and the older ones were retired, therefore couldn't do anything. We hired them on the spot into 'The Pan Crew', making a little nature army, not counting multiple passionate nymphs.
Then finally, when they were twenty-five, Percy proposed. Annabeth had been dropping hints for years now, which really showed how slow Percy could be. It was a small ceremony, neither of the demigods were very flashy. Grover was Percy's best man, and Annabeth hadn't been able to get in contact with Thalia, so she settled for Juniper and Rachel as her bridesmaids. Estelle was the adorable little flower girl. The event was attended by the Blofis's, Frederick, Magnus, Helen, Bobby, and Mathew Chase, Alex Fierro as Magnus's plus one, and the Kanes.
When they were twenty-seven, Annabeth announced herself pregnant. The couple had moved into a two-storey house in the outskirts of the city, right next to Grover and Juniper, who were expecting their second child. Rachel was dating a faun, Don, and they had recently moved into an apartment together. That was thirty-five weeks ago (and yes, he had counted).
Percy sighed contently. His life was full-steam ahead yet he couldn't help but feel a sense of longing for his old friends. He missed Thalia and Nico's constant competition. Jason and Piper's encouragement. Hazel and Frank's adorableness. Will and Reyna's sternness to 'stop putting yourself in danger'(cue snort, as if). And best all of Leo. Gods of Olympus, Leo! Percy still had dreams about the final battle, when the teenager sacrificed himself, so young. Piper and Jason had been in denial. They'd searched all over the world for several years, thinking Leo could've survived. But, no such luck. That's a demigod's life in a nutshell. 'No such luck'.
Percy's head drooped. Before snapping up at the sound of footsteps. He turned to see a figure in a bush, their legs sticking out of the top, as if they had fallen into it. Percy could make out some bronze skin peeking out under grey denim cargo pants and some leather-clad work-boots. He cocked a brow at the stupidity of the person, then stopped at the thought of his own seaweed-like brain.
"You gon' to help me?" A masculine voice yelped. Percy scrambled to give assistance to the poor guy. He couldn't help but think how familiar that voice sounded. He pulled the legs of the dude and dragged him out. A short latino managed to wriggle out of the bush. Percy's breath caught in the back of his throat, as Leo Valdez was lying in front of him.
...
The twenty-five-year-old grinned sheepishly at Percy's feet before looking up at his face. Leo's smile melted at Percy's aggressive expression. The young-adult jumped up and brushed himself off. Percy was still a head taller than him, but Leo had grown. Leo had gotten burlier, his dirt covered arms swelled up with muscle. His hair was still a nest of curly chocolate locks with elf-shaped ears sticking out the sides. His shining dark eyes had the same glint it had all those years ago, like a pieces of coal that had just caught a spark. He was wearing scruffy grey denim overalls and a casual red T-Shirt underneath. His bronze skin was slightly more tan thanks to the Texas sun. Around his neck hung the simple brown string, a constant reminder that he had never been able to get his first bead.
Percy was slightly taller than he was a decade ago. Strokes of age across his forehead had already started forming, but that did not change his attractiveness, no sir! He still had the mysterious sea-green eyes that swirled in the lime-light. His sun-kissed skin was slightly more tan than it was. His wavy porcelain-black hair was swept to one side. Gods, if Leo was gay, Percy would have been the ultimate heart-throb. The son of Hephaestus could see why ninety-nine-point-nine-nine percent of all demigods who ever existed had a crush on the son of Poseidon. Percy was wearing dark khaki shorts and an old-looking Green Day rock shirt. Leo smiled slightly when he looked at water-boy. He missed his old friends. Percy wasn't first on the list, but whatevs And maybe...just maybe, being the awkward demigod he was, decided to jump-in-a-bush-to-bring-Percy-to-him-instead-of-saying-the-first-word? Whoopsies!
"Valdez," Percy practically growled. "How in the /spanspan style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: italic; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"Hades /spanspan style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"are you still alive?" His voice grew louder with every word.
Leo shrank into himself. Maybe he should have kept to himself, he thought idly, when he was lifted by the scruff of his shirt by two very rough hands.
"Leo!" Percy snapped, bringing the mechanic back to reality. "Do you know what your death did to us? We all searched like mad-men for you, thinking you could've survived the explosion or somehow got injected by the Physician's cure." Percy's voice went into mock falsetto. "'He's Leo freakin' Valdez, he can achieve the impossible!'" Percy's glare softened slightly and he settled the demigod on the ground. He rubbed the brink of his nose and looked down at his shoes. "Slowly we all gave up. First it was me and Annabeth. Then Hazel and Frank. But Piper and Jason didn't stop. They put their lives on hold for years to find you!" Percy took a deep breath. Leo looked away, ashamed. Percy sighed. "Annabeth's gonna kill you." He mumbled, wringing his hands, before looking up at the smaller demigod. "I missed you, bad-boy-supreme." Percy admitted, clapping the latino on the shoulder after running a hand through his own sea-swept locks.
Leo gave him a half-smile. "No doubt," Leo tried to laugh. "Who didn't miss The Leo Valdez?" He chuckled weakly. The joke tasted foul in his mouth. Piper and Jason searched for him for years, all whilst he was sitting in Texas, hiding from them with Calypso's magic. He choked on his own guilt. They missed him. Percy smiled sadly, as if reading his mind. "Are you really gonna forgive me, just like that?" Leo whispered.
Percy looked at him seriously. "You may be an imbecile, Valdez. But you're still my friend. Whilst you may have a concussion by the time everyone else realises that too…" He drawled, grinning lopsidedly. "Ah, can't wait to hear what Reyna has to say." Percy cackled, Leo gulped.
"So, what are you doing in Texas?" Leo changed the subject quickly. /span/p
Percy's eyes lit up as he excitedly explained the scope and amaZhang-ness of his environmental group (his wording). Leo was surprised to hear that he and Annabeth had left.
"Just like that?" He repeated again.
Percy rolled his eyes. "Nah, we climbed a Thalia's tree first. Yes, dumbass. Just like that."
"I thought it was Annabeth's home?"
"Too many bad memories. 'Sides, everyone stares at us, it's hard to spar when a kid gasps your name every ten seconds." Percy took a breath.
"College in New Rome?"
"Greeks were still treated differently. Just because Octavian's dead doesn't mean his influence is gone. There were a bunch of mass-mutinies to get rid of Hazel and Frank. Me and Annie tried for a week before getting sick of all the glares. Grover's pissed at how fauns were treated, Hazel and Frank tried to make changes but Romans are just as stubborn as Greeks. The two camps coordinate but there's a reason I didn't think merging them together was a good idea. Just because we begrudgingly fought side-by-side doesn't mean all tension is gone, the gods kept us apart for a reason." Percy explained flippantly.
"That was…surprisingly smart of you, aqua-man." Leo commented. Percy threw him a glare and hit him over the head playfully. Leo yelped.
"Anyway, that was a decade ago. Maybe they've merged it now." Percy smiled self-deprecatingly. "I'm not exactly invited to the board meetings anymore."
"That makes two of us." Leo tried for a smile. "So, here's the list; Frazel were praetors; Theyna were hunters; Solangelo were helping out camp; Jasper were searching for me but had ideas of moving to L.A; Percabeth live in New York; and Caleo live in Houston." He paused to look at the environmentalist. "Sounds good?"
Percy snorted at the ship names but hummed in agreement when the younger demigod finished. "Like I said, I've been out of touch for nearly a decade, everything could've changed, I dunno." He shrugged. Percy turned to Leo. "There's one thing I haven't said." He said slowly, looking Leo deep in the eyes.
Leo met the gaze head-on, determined to stay in favour with his last demigodly friend. "What's up?" He said cautiously. Leo had grown paranoid over the past years. After a life of abandonment, who could really blame him? Calypso had to force her way into Leo's heart, and not take 'no' for an answer. She had to put up with Leo's destructive tendencies and even joked that she was Pepper Potts to his Tony Stark, something Leo whole-heartedly agreed with.
Percy studied him sternly, like Annabeth when she was taking Capture the Flag far too seriously. "Tell me about your life first." He ordered. At Leo's face, Percy elaborated. "I've been doing a lot of sharing, it's your turn. I will explain my secret after I know what you've been doing for these years."
Leo nodded. That seemed fair. "Hope you can keep up with my awesomeness." He joked, but inside he was churning. Leo's heart lurched slightly at the idea that Percy didn't trust him anymore. The two had never been close, obviously. Percy was closer to Frank, Hazel, and Annabeth. Leo was closer to Jason, Hazel, and Piper. And Hazel and Frank had a small grudge with Jason for suggesting the idea to not save Nico. She used to have one with Leo too, but after finding out about his bisabuelo, everything was cool. Off-topic, sorry, back to Percy. They were stuck on a boat together, on a life-threatening quest, for over a month. If that doesn't bring people together, Leo didn't know what did. Hazel even got over her whole Jason dynamic when they worked together to kill Sciron. Damn ADHD. Back to the topic: He and Percy had talked through their past relationships with Callie, and they were good with it. They even teamed up in jokes and pranks, especially when the team was most serious. Percy got along with everybody, well after him and Jason got over their rivalry to save each others' asses. He said Hera had called him 'the glue'. His fatal flaw is loyalty, for Zeus's sake. If any role screamed Percy, it was that stubborn rubberband that tied them all together, and didn't let go until it broke. Leo had thought their friendship went much deeper than distrust. On the Argo II, Leo has been ready to call them 'The Jokers'.
"It isn't personal." Percy's voice crashed through his thoughts, soaking the depressing ones whilst they were burning his hope away. Percy looked at him seriously, though a sparkle in his eye splintered the facade. "You're stuck with me Valdez, like it or not." Leo smiled weakly before mentally chiding himself for showing such a weak side of him. "You're not weak, your sense of humour is awesome, but make sure you let people see your emotions sometimes."
"Damn mind-reading-therapists." Leo muttered. He looked up at Percy and nodded. Leo explained how Festus injected him with the cure, and how they picked up Callie. Leo told him about being scared to tell his friends he was alive and decided to travel with Callie, who wanted to go everywhere. Honestly the two made quite a pair. Leo; locked out by his family; always searching for a home. Calypo; locked in by her family; wanting to escape her home. Leo talked of inheriting his family's apartment, after making Aunt devil move away with the rest of the family. He went on about his new mechanic shop and snack-bar. He spoke of him and the titaness's upgraded apartment and engagement. He smiled as he reminisced about his new life, Leo Valdez was living the dream. Percy was a great listener, well he had to be if he was married to Annabeth, ya know what I'm saying? He laughed and gasped in all the right places. When Leo was finished, he shook his head with a fond smile.
"Damn Valdez, breath for me, will ya?" He joked then turned sober once more. "If monsters or gods hear wind of this, they can use it against me, Leo. I am trusting you to keep your mouth shut about this, alright?" Leo gulped and nodded quickly, fearing the worst. Percy gave him a small smile. "The reason Annie didn't come on this trip is that..." Percy hesitated. "she can't fly."
Leo raised a scruffy eyebrow. "'Can't fly'? You can't either?!" He retorted incredulously.
Percy rubbed his neck. "Well, before I told the gods to back-the-hell-out-of-my-life, I got 'heroes protection', Zeus can't strike me down. Now," Percy turned away, his eyes resting on the shore. "Think about what I said for a moment."
"Why can't she-" After a beat, Leo's mouth formed an 'oh'. "She's pregnant?!" He yelled, dumbfounded.
"Make sure Tartarus can hear you." Percy grumbled.
Leo grinned madly. "Ayy dude! Ma' Percy's gettin' some!" He whooped.
Percy looked at the sky nervously. "Waiting for an owl-attack from my good old mother-in-law." He explained.
Leo couldn't stop grinning. "There's gonna be a mini Percy or Annabeth running around. With you plus her, the world will be dominated in no time."
Percy smiled softly at the thought of his unborn-child. He shook his head. "If you thought Annabeth was scary, wait 'till you see her pregnant." Leo winced exaggeratedly, making Percy laugh. He smiled fondly. "So…" Percy drawled. Leo bit his lip nervously. "When do I get to see the lady-friend?"
…
So, yes or no?
I do have a lot of angsty Leo, but I think he's pretty in character
Next chapter is about Annabeth and Jason. I'll have it out by the end of the day.
Dexter out!
