Stretching in his seat, Toshinori glances at the time on his computer. It was late, and looking over at the pile of work remaining on his desk he sighed. It was endless, even with the help of the other secretaries. Sometimes he wondered if his boss was human or not, in order to keep his head above all this work. At the thought of his employer, Toshinori discreetly peaks over his computer to the glass cubicle in front of him. Given the man's rank, it was a modest office with the modern minimalistic furnishing. He had been working in this company long enough to know that the office wasn't always as such.
As expected with the change in leadership, the organisation structure and culture were subjected to change. Upon the resignation of his old boss and the appointment of the new director, Toshinori witnessed and experienced the most abrupt changes. Perhaps it was due to the new leader's young age that such a sudden shift was implemented, but he really didn't mind as most of it was focused on removing all the archaic and obsolete parts of the business which were hampering its performance. Despite the lack of power and respect the secretarial job held, it was the most visible position in the company – especially if you were the secretary to the managing director (all reports from every department went through him).
Watching the young director read through yet another report, Toshinori allowed a fond smile to grace his face. Not only the company and its revenue experienced a change for the better, but him as well. His boss looks up, meeting his gaze and Toshinori flustered at first for being caught staring; however, returns the young director's soft smile with his own (albeit embarrassed).
When they were first introduced to Midoriya Izuku at the quarterly Town Hall Meeting, many of the older employees felt uncertain about being led by such a young director. Although, once he began working; many understood why the executive rose so fast within the corporate hierarchy. Having studied their company well before entering office, Toshinori watched his new boss seamlessly introduce changes confidently. Specifically, the first change when he spoke to the secretarial team.
Toshinori was in a team of four secretaries, and being the older male; he had resigned himself to being ignored yet again despite doing the majority of the work. His previous employer was the typical old perverted director, and hired the other three secretaries as eye candy. They were beautiful women, but worthless around the office; hence the bulk of the actual work fell on his shoulders (and if there were mistakes, he shouldered them as well). When the news that the replacement was a young attractive director, Toshinori mentally prepared himself to be overlooked and unappreciated yet again.
However, his first team meeting with Director Midoriya – such a perception was promptly shattered.
"Secretary Yagi, since you are the most experienced one here, I want you to be my head secretary. The others would all report to you. I don't have time to coordinate with four secretaries, so let's streamline this process. Understood?"
"Y-Yes." Toshinori answered hurriedly, his brain still not fully processing what was being said.
Promptly his job description and pay were revamped, and he knew he was now being paid well above the others. It was a promotion and role change, but one that wasn't well received by the rest. The other women didn't appreciate Toshinori being the only one able to deal with the young director, neither were they welcoming with the fact that he held authority over them. Toshinori had tried to make use of this opportunity to prove to Director Midoriya he indeed made the right choice, by trying to delegate work and function as a team. However, there were always people who wanted others to fail.
"Secretary Yagi, I believe there is a mistake in this report. Please revise the figures and share the corrected copy with me."
"I-I am so sorry Director Midoriya. I'll do that right away." He mentally swore as he hastily made his way to collect the incorrect report. Ever since his new post, the workload increased exponentially and other women hadn't changed their behaviour. Even if they did reluctantly complete their work, it would always be full of errors (Toshinori felt most of them were intentional); hence, he ended up spending a considerable amount in correcting their work – and being overloaded led to a decline in the precision of his work.
It was humiliating and embarrassing.
He had seen the younger man verbally rip apart others for incompetence, and at the amount of times Toshinori had been summon to his office for mistakes in the paperwork; it was only a matter of time before that ever patient calm tone turned into an icy bite (god forbid if it became sarcastic and cutting – Toshinori still believes the Sales Director had yet to recover from that particular meeting).
"I'm terribly sorry for this, Sir." He repeated ruefully as he bowed his head low.
However, he was startled when he heard the sound of a chair moving, footsteps and finally a warm palm on his shoulder.
"Hey, none of that and lift your head," Perhaps it was the soft and almost affectionate tone the younger male used that made him look up. "I know it's not your fault." The director continues, eyes warm. "I am aware of you work, which is why I placed you in this position,"
Toshinori flushes and nods mutely. Reaching to take the paperwork, his superior asks absentmindedly, "You are aware that you have the authority to replace your team?"
Realising what the man was implying, Toshinori replies bashfully, "Not until now, Sir… I'll see to it"
Before he could leave, he heard, "Also none of that Sir or Director Midoriya stuff. Just call me Izuku in private."
Flushing at the familiarity of using his given name, Toshinori shyly responded, "Then please call me Toshinori."
He still pinked up at that memory. Especially at the sound of the warm laughter he heard as he hastily exited the office. It was also what sparked the change of feelings towards his boss. Toshinori had always admired and respected Izuku; the director not only worked hard, but smart as well. Izuku recognised and rewarded his employees' efforts accordingly and most of all he wasn't afraid to cut their losses; especially if a particular strategy wasn't working (Toshinori had seen egos of directors' ruin performance plenty of times before).
Although, now there was a giddy and fluttering feeling of happiness whenever Izuku looked his way.
Having been subjected to three women who were only interested in relationships, it was easy to realise he was now crushing hard on his young boss. However, given their age difference and difference in socioeconomic status; Toshinori would have better luck winning the lottery than having his feelings reciprocated. Even simply comparing their looks told anyone they were never meant to be together – he was a withering old man and Izuku was a young attractive executive. They couldn't be more different.
Upon firing the old team and replacing them with Aizawa, Yamada and Kayama; purposely selecting the three as they had graduated from the same secretarial course (Toshinori wanted a team that was already familiar with each other, for he couldn't play referee for infighting anymore); his schedule eased up tremendously. However, as the company grew, so did his workload again. The blonde peeked over his monitor once more – at least he could spend time with the person he liked, so it wasn't all bad.
Seeing Izuku clear his table, Toshinori quickly did the same. Due to the increasing number of late nights, the younger male had begun offering him a ride home (he had tried to explain he could still take the last train, but Izuku overruled stating, "I asked you to stay, the least I could do is drive you home."); and the habit stuck. Kayama and Yamada teased him mercilessly about it, stating they acted as a married couple – Toshinori would roll his eyes, but he couldn't stamp out the all too familiar pleased giddy feeling.
"It's a bit early tonight, shall we stop for dinner before heading home?" Izuku asked as he approached Toshinori's desk.
They really acted as a couple, didn't they? Keeping his tone casual, he nodded, "Sure."
"Brilliant, there is a small place I recently discovered." His young boss rambled on as they walked out of the building and towards the car. The increased time together, allowed Toshinori to experience Izuku not only as his superior but as a person as well. Despite his calm and composed disposition at work; after hours, he was an exuberant and optimistic young man… And unbelievably kind. In the corporate world, being cold and calculative was a necessary evil for survival; and doing so provided results. Izuku was all of that; but, there was compassion and empathy as well.
Toshinori had personally experienced it many times.
Dinner was fairly a simple meal. Their table was outside and, on the pavement, giving them a beautiful view of the city's nightlife. It was a Friday night, so many of the entertainment establishments were open and there were plenty of people on the streets. As usual Izuku and he flew through various topics, starting on work related discussion to more personal interest (they had so much in common despite the difference in age). At times Toshinori caught Izuku looking at him strangely – he couldn't place the emotion save for it being intense and tender at the same time. However, he dispelled that thought as a trick of the light and his mind overthinking things.
Realising how much time had passed, Izuku vetoed paying the bill and Toshinori settled for tipping the waiter before making their way to the car. The conversation still flowed between them smoothly, and they laughed about ridiculous situations at work. Pulling up to his front gate, Toshinori sobered up as he recognised it was the end of a wonderful night.
Returning his attention to Izuku in the driver's seat, he awkwardly comments, "I had a great time tonight… Thank you."
"Yeah, me too." Again, Toshinori sees that strange look, only this time Izuku was leaning closer.
There was something in the air and the previously light mood between them became heavy and tense. Subconsciously, Toshinori felt himself being drawn towards Izuku as the strange intense but tender expression pulled him in. Slowly, he saw the young executive reach out and place his hand over his larger one; thumb brushing soothing circles on the skin. They were only inches apart and Toshinori could see Izuku's pupils blown wide and hear his breath. He was pretty sure he wasn't any different either.
Understanding the change in body language and feeling a little brave, Toshinori whispers, "Was this a date?"
"I certainly hope so." Izuku rasps out slowly.
Toshinori's breath hitches as that light fluttering feeling engulfs his entire being, unable to contain it his face bursts into a giant smile. Drunk on the happiness and elation, he quips coyly, "Usually dates end with a kiss."
Izuku mirrors his smile before cupping his face, "Oh really?" He purrs and Toshinori shivers at the tone. With that he closed his eyes as Izuku bridges the gap between them.
Feeling the soft pressure against his lips, Toshinori sighs in pleasure. It was even better than his dreams, and he lost himself to Izuku's scent and warmth. After a few seconds, he felt Izuku's tongue brush against his lips as a silent request for permission, which Toshinori gave eagerly. Parting his lips, Izuku's tongue immediately darted inside. Twisting and twirling with his, Toshinori released a low moan to which the younger male answered with pleased rumble. Suckling on his lower lip, Izuku broke the kiss as they parted for air.
"It seems I've gotten the order mixed up... But better late than never." Izuku comments clearing his throat, "Yagi Toshinori, would you go out with me?"
Blushing at the formal proposal, he replies breathlessly, "Yes."
A/N: I wanted to write a fic where the power balance in the relationship was reversed. Plus we all need a first sweet kiss and date fic. I am pretty biased to this AU and might consider writing a longer version later on.
