"He called you a bitch?"
"Yes. But, that wasn't the first time that had happened." Lane says to JJ with a long sigh. Her, JJ, and John B were out in front of the Chateau the morning after finding the compass. She was lying in the hammock with her journal in her lap while the boys tossed a football back and forth. "If I had a dollar for every time Rafe called me a bitch or a whore I could afford to go full kook."
"Yeah, why does he hate you so much?" John B asks, tossing the ball back to JJ.
"He hates all of us." Lane reminds him
"Well, yeah, but he especially hates you." JJ points out.
"Wow, thanks JJ" Lane gives him a look and he just shrugs because it was the truth. Rafe had a special dislike for Lane. She wasn't quite sure why, but maybe it had something to do with the fact that she and he may have had a little...affair if you could call it that. They hooked up, once maybe twice and she kind of ghosted him after the second time because she realized even if she tried her hardest she couldn't separate her distaste for him enough to enjoy having sex with him. He didn't take to this too well, because he probably had never been told no in his life before that. "I don't know why he hates me so much," She lies to them, they didn't exactly know that she had been involved with him, "but I don't think he likes anyone besides his drug dealer." She mumbles, "So, what are we gonna do about that compass?" She changes the subject
"I'm thinking about going to talk to Lana Grubbs." John B tells her, "We found it in her husband's boat, she has to know something about it."
"Right..." Lane trails off, 'her husband who just died." She tells him, "So she'll really feel like talking to you."
"I know, it's not the best timing." He sighs, "But I have to ask. My dad's compass, that's been passed down through generations of my family in Scooter Grubb's sunken boat?"
"I have to admit, it is very strange." Lane nods, "I'm not saying don't go see her I'm just saying be mindful and sensitive," She points two fingers at the boys, "something that you two very much struggle with."
JJ gasps, putting a hand to his chest, "Baby I am so sensitive and very mindful." Lane rolls her eyes at him, "Why can't you come with us?" He asks her
"Yeah make sure we're being sensitive and mindful." John B suggests to her
"Aw, I'd love to babysit you guys," She says sarcastically," but I'm gonna go by the shelter and check on Baxter. I haven't been able to make it the last couple of days." She carefully gets up from the hammock. It was rare that she didn't fall while getting out of it.
"Fine." JJ sighs, "But if you're not there to keep us accountable we might just make her cry!" He calls after her as she starts to walk in the direction of her house. She simply waves to them, turning her walk into a slight jog. JJ is watching her go, her ponytail swinging back and forth as she jogs, her denim shorts riding up just enough for hi to enjoy the view. And then he's hit in the arm with a football, "Ow," JJ hisses, turning to JB, "What the hell man?"
"Why are you looking at her like that?" He frowns at his friend.
"I'm just...looking. Not in any particular way." He says, "You're trying to tell me you don't like watching her walk away?" He asks.
"No, because she's like a sister to me, and you've she's like that to you too." John B reminds him, "I used to take baths with the girl when we were babies."
"I said that before the girl turned into a wholeass woman." JJ sighs dreamily, "Now I'd give anything to take a bath with her." He clicks his tongue.
'Come on," John B nudges him with a roll of his eyes, "Let's go talk to Lana."
Lane goes back to the Chateau after going to the shelter to find that thankfully, Baxter had been adopted and taken to a very nice home. But, her happy mood seems to fizzle out when she steps onto the porch where the rest of the Pogues were hanging out, "Dang," Lane looks at them all, "Who died?" She asks.
"We went to see Lana," John B explains, "Those two guys who were chasing us in the boat yesterday were at her house, destroying it trying to find the compass."
Lane's eyes widen, "Your compass?" Her voice is high pitched, "The one you have on you right now?"
"Lane, it was crazy." JJ goes on his rant, "We were walking up to the house, and we started hearing screaming-and we were right outside like this." He presses himself up against the wall to recreate it, "And all we hear is just 'Bam! Bam! Bam!'" He exclaims, "Knocking paint off the wall, G. From the inside." JJ was, of course, livening up the story for dramatic effect. "Look at this shit." He leans over, starting to shake his hair out, like he expects paint to fall out of it and prove his point.
"That's dandruff. Disgusting." Kie grimaces.
"Look at all that." Lane frowns at JJ and looks over at John B to see if any part of this story was the truth, "That's paint." She turns back to JJ, "At that point, I was just like...I'm waiting for death." He says.
"Oh, Okay. So you saw the guys who shot at us, right?" Pope says, trying to wrap his head around all the information getting thrown at them.
"Yeah." JJ nods, out of breath.
"Did you get a good description of them?" Pope asks, "Anything that we can bring to the police?"
JJ pauses, looking out of the porch in thought, "Burly." Is all that comes out of his mouth.
"Burly?" Lane asks him
"Yeah, you know like-like the type of guys at my dad's garage." He explains, "I mean, you guys know he made cargo hides for drug smugglers. I can tell you with full confidence, these boys, these killers" He takes a long drag from his juul, "they're square groupers." He says.
"They're square groupers like narco square groupers?" Pope asks, "Like Pablo Escobar square grouper?"
"Yeah, man." JJ nods.
"You guys," Kie cuts in, "not everything is a kingpin movie." She says
"What does this square grouper look like?" Pope asks, trying once again to get a better description from his blond friend. "Specifically? Because apparently you don't know what to look for!" Pope yells at him
"Dude! I wasn't taking little mental polaroids the entire time." JJ's face is getting all red, "I was under duress, okay?" under...what? "But I can tell you..." He takes a deep breath to compose himself, "I can tell you by the was Ms. Lana was screaming, that these guys are serious hombres."
John B pulls the compass out of his pocket it and opens it, Lane can see the gears turning in his mind. "Why would they want the compass?" Kie asks
"That thing is a piece of shit, you couldn't pawn it off for five bucks even if you wanted to." Pope says and Lane smacks him in the arm. "No offense John B, I know it's in your family."
But John B isn't paying attention to what Pope is saying, he's got his mind somewhere else, "The Office." He says.
"What?" Lane asks him
"My dad. My dad's office." He starts to head inside and after sharing a confused look, the other teens do so as well. "He always kept the office locked because he was worried about his competitors stealing his Royal Merchant research." He explains as they all follow him to the office door, "We used to laugh at him all the time about it, like he was gonna find it. But, now that he's gone I've just kinda..." He stops at the door, pausing as he pulls out the keys to unlock it, "I just kind of left it as he kept it."
"Yeah, for when he gets back." Kie says, giving them all a look as if to say shut it before they could even say anything.
John B opens the door and they all file in while he immediately goes to look through the papers on his dad's desk, "I've slept over here like 600 times, and I've never seen this door open." Pope says in amazement.
"Here, look," John B pulls a corkboard off the wall and lays it down on his dad's desk to show them all, "This is the original owner, right here." He points to an old picture where a guy in a uniform has the compass.
"Robert Q Routledge." Kie reads, "1880-1920. There's the lucky compass." She points to where it is in the picture.
"Actually, um, he was shot after he bought it." John B says slowly, "Then the compass was shipped back to Henry. Henry was killed in a crop-dusting accident when he had the compass." Lane's eyes widen, "After he died, the compass was given to Stephen. Stephen had the compass with him when he died in Vietnam."
"Let me guess he died in action, right?" JJ asks.
"Sort of." John B says, "Actually he was killed by a banana truck. In-In country." Lane mentally facepalms, "Anyways, after that Stephan passed the compass down to him, my dad." John B finally points to the picture of his dad on the board.
"Seems like there's a recurring theme here," JJ says.
"Yeah you have a death compass," Pope tells him.
"I do not." John B defends, "Look, my dad used to talk about this little compartment in here." He says, sitting down in his dad's chair as he fiddles with the compass, "Soldiers used to hide secret notes." They all watch over his shoulder as he unscrews the back of the compass, taking it apart basically, to reveal a secret compartment as he said.
"What's that?" Kie notices something scratched into the lid of the compartment.
"That wasn't there before." John B observes, "This is my dad's handwriting." He turns to look back at his friends.
"How can you know that?" Pope asks in disbelief.
"Because he does these weird Rs with the-see it?" He holds it up to show Pope, showing him how the R is written in a pretty unique way.
"Can I see it?" JJ asks, reaching to get a better look at the word, "Red-Rout-no I think that's an A."
"It says Redfield." Lane cuts him off, looking over his shoulder to read it herself, causing him to look a little embarrassed.
"Okay, well what's Redfield?" Kie asks
"Besides the most common name in the county?" Pope suggests
"Maybe it's a clue." John B rubs his eyes in thought, "Maybe it's a clue to where he's hiding." He decides
"Okay that's" Kie cuts Pope off with a dirty look and he changes his tune, "If it is a clue maybe it's an Anagram." He suggests
"Yes. Perfect. An Anagram. You need paper." John B lays a piece of paper in front of Pope so he can work.
"How can you concentrate with that thing constantly crowing at you? Pope groans as the rooster crows loudly outside.
"That thing has a name," Lane defends, "and I happen to love Wilber." She mutters
"You names a rooster Wilber?" Kie asks her
"Yeah, they didn't have a pig." Lane shrugs simple, "JJ, and I love the rooster." She reminds everyone
"I love the rooster," Kie pipes in.
While everyone else is trying to help Pope solve this Anagram, Lane wanders around the rest of the office, looking for anything else that might be helpful to them. Lane had also never really been in the office, like John B said, his dad kept it locked most of the time. But, she did have this one memory of it from when she was about five. Her and John B were playing hide and seek, John B was it because he lost nose goes, obviously. She had been looking for a killer place to hide and for the first time, Big John had left the office unlocked when he left. She snuck inside and tucked herself under his desk where she thought she would be invisible. Soon enough though, not only did Big John come back in but so did her dad. Whatever they were talking about was soon forgotten once her dad spotted her under the desk. She could hear his voice so clear even to this day, "Now, what have you gotten into now, Penny Lane?" Her dad was the only person to ever call her that nickname, once Lane had stuck he added Penny on to match up with The Beatles song, something he sang to her often when she was little.
Her memory is interrupted when she looks out the window and sees a black pickup truck pull in front of the house, "Hey...guys?" She tries to get her friend's attention but they're arguing about something, "Guys!" She says louder and they all shut up, "Someone's here." She does not like the look of the guys who hop out of the car. She has a sinking feeling in her gut because they look an awful lot like the guys who were chasing them yesterday, "Is that them?" She asks, turning to John B as everyone comes to look out the window with her.
"Oh no." JJ groans
"This is suboptimal," Pope says.
"John B I told you, man," JJ walks across the room, "Why does it always-"
John B cuts him off, walking over and grabbing him by the shirt, "JJ! Hey, look at me," He whispers yells, "Where's the gun" He asks, pushing him against the wall.
"Gun? I-Uh-I can't-" JJ stutters
"Now you don't have the gun? The one time we need the gun?" Kie panics, her hands going to cover her face in fear
"It was in my backpack and then I-" JJ is trying to remember, "It's on the porch." He suddenly remembers and goes to walk out of the room, his intent is to go and get the gun from his backpack, but that isn't as easy as it sounds. By the time he's halfway there, they're already on the porch and entering the house, calling out for John B. "They're on the front porch, guys." He whispers to them.
"Okay, window, window." Lane rushes over to one of the windows in the room and tries to open it but it won't budge.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you opening it?" JJ hisses at her
"It's painted shut." Unlike everyone else in the situation, Lane is remaining calm, probably because the adrenaline pumping through her body was making her go into shock and she wasn't really processing what was happening. She turns around, looking for something to help while Pope and JJ try and open the window despite what she said. She finds something sharp, probably a letter opener, and walks back over to the window, "Move." She tells the boys. She starts scraping away the paint from the window, John B and Pope standing against the door as the two men trash the Chateau.
"Hurry." JJ is standing over her
"I'm going as fast as I can." She whispers back, trying with all her strength to pry the damn window open.
One of the guys slams himself against the door, "You better not be in there." He yells.
He starts to kick at the door over and over, putting more pressure on Lane to get the paint off. Finally, she can get the window to move, "Okay, I got it." She says, pushing the window open just as the door starts to fall apart from him kicking it. The lock wouldn't hold it much longer. She ushers everyone out the window and they head toward the chicken coop. She's the last one out, closing the window quietly behind her just as he fires a shot at the lock.
"Lane, come on," JJ calls to her in a whisper, making sure she gets into the coop and tucks herself away in a corner before he himself gets in. John B watches through the window in the coop as the two men clear out basically everything in his dad's office and load it into their truck. Wilber is crowing the whole time, so loud and so often that he might get them caught, "Do something, Fallon, shut him up." JJ hisses at her.
"What do you want me to do?" She asks him, the nerves hitting her now and her hands start to shake
"Pet it, or talk to it. I don't know." Tears are filling Kie's eyes out of fear
"I can't-" Lane reaches to try and pet the rooster but it freaks out, crowing and starting to fly around the coop. JJ grabs a hold of the rooster and pins it down, grabbing its neck, "JJ no-" She tries to stop him but Pope puts a hand over her mouth and she watches in horror as JJ snaps the rooster's neck. She knew it has to be done but it still brought tears to her eyes, just like the death of any animal.
After what seems like an eternity, the two men finally get in their truck and drive away. Lane is the first one out of the coop, wiping her cheeks, "Lane..." She bends over, her hands on her knees as she feels her stomach churn. "Lane, hey-" JJ puts a hand on her back.
"No," She waves a hand, "I'm...I'm fine I just need a minute." She's trying really hard to not vomit right about now.
"It had to be done." John B says softly
"I know, I know." She says, "I'm not being a baby it was just really gross." She takes a deep breath and then stands up, the nausea past.
"You okay?" JJ looks into her eyes, and she nods, wrapping her arms around his waist and hugging him, all the stress and adrenaline from the events that just happened slowly melting away.
"So what now?" Pope asks, mainly looking at John B.
"I think I know where we're gonna find the answer to this clue." He pulls the compass out of his pocket.
"Can JJ go wash his hands first?" Lane asks quietly.
"I mean it's obvious, right?" John B starts as they're driving to his super-secret location, "A family heirloom. What better place to hide a secret message?" Kie was sitting in the passenger seat and the other three were in the back. Pope, dangling the compass in front of his face, and JJ smoking a joint with Lane sitting next to him and taking occasional hits. "He had to know it was gonna get back to me, right?"
'Yeah, it's possible." Kie agrees with him.
"It could also be possible that you're conduction wild to theories to help, you know," John tries to stop him from continuing but he just keeps talking, "deal with your sad feels." He finishes.
"Bro, you know how I process my sad feels." JJ says, distracting from the fact that Kie is glaring at Pope right about now, "Dank nugs and the stickiest of ickies."
"We know." Lane pats his thigh
"I'm not concocting, okay?" John B brings it back to the issue at hand, "My dads trying to give me a message."
"If it helps you believe, John B." Kie says slowly, only trying to help but she herself couldn't fully get behind this.
"I don't need a therapy session." John B says firmly, "Look, I'm not trippin out."
"It's okay to trip, bro, but-" JJ's thought is cut off.
"My dad-My dad is missing, okay?" John B says, turning to look at the three in the back, "Missing." He emphasizes, "You don't know what it's like to have to person closest to you vanish and then have no idea what happened." He explains, "Just, wake up every morning wondering." He catches Lane's eyes in the rearview mirror and she looks down at her hands. Even she couldn't fully understand what he was going through, she knew what happened to her parents, she had closure.
"Hey, he could have been kidnapped." JJ says after a beat of silence in the van, "That's definitely a possibility."
"Yeah, could be in a Soviet sub getting interrogated by the KGB somewhere." Pope pipes in.
"Or Atlantis," JJ adds to his end. They mean well by trying to lighten the mood, but Kie shushes them.
"Look, what do you think the message is?" Kie asks John B.
"Redfield." He says, "Redfield lighthouse." Lane looks out the window as they drive past the sign, "It's my dad's favorite place." He pulls up to the lighthouse, parking the van and the five of them hop out, looking up at the lighthouse that looks like it's taken quite the beating recently. John B turns to JJ, "You're gonna post up and look out for bogeys, okay?" He points to him.
"Wait, why me?" JJ asks
"Because you're not coming." Pope breaks the news to him.
"Why?" JJ is in disbelief
"Look, JJ, there are independent and there are dependent variables," Pope explains, "And you're an independent variable. We don't know what you'll do."
"Shut up, Pope!" JJ yells at him after he keeps trying to explain it to him.
"Just listen to me for a second." John B grabs JJ's attention, "Lane, you and Pope stand lookout with JJ, okay?" He tells them and Lane nods simply, she didn't feel like going into the lighthouse that looked like it was going to fall over with one more strong gust of wind. "If we get split up, we meet back at JJ's house." He tosses Lane the keys to the van, just in case.
"Great," Kie says and she and John B start walking towards the lighthouse.
"I'm gonna work on my merit scholarship essay," Pope says as Lane sits in the van with the door open and pulls out her journal, "And I'm trying to keep felonies down to a minimum."
"Alright, would you just shut up already?" JJ asks, pulling a hacky-sack out of his pocket and starting to play with it. Lane is at peace for a minute, writing some new thoughts down until the hacky-sack lands on top of her page. She looks up at JJ who is now standing right in front of her, "Oops." He says sarcastically, his dimples showing as he grins at her.
"You're a pest, JJ Maybank." She tosses it back to him.
"Are you still sad about Wilbur?" He asks her, his voice soft
"Yeah, but it was necessary." She shrugs, "Maybe we can have a funeral for him later." She smiles softly at him, seeing a little spark in his blue eyes.
"Yeah, that would be nice." She knew he felt bad for what he had to do, especially because of her initial reaction. He was afraid he had traumatized her, but Lane had way worse trauma than that and she was still standing today.
He takes the hacky-sack and tosses it to Pope, they start kicking it back and forth for a couple of minutes before the sound of sirens in the distance reaches their ears. "Oh, shit." Pope and JJ make a run for the van and Lane jumps into the driver's seat, starting the van but not driving away yet, "What the hell are you doing? DRIVE!" Pope yells at her.
"Don't yell at me! I can't leave without them." She says frantically.
"They'll be fine, go!" JJ insists. Lane takes one more look at the lighthouse door and there's no sign of them, but the sirens are getting closer.
"Fuck it." She mutters, throwing the van into gear and driving away as fast as she can.
She drops the boys off at JJ's place but after waiting there for a while and no sign of John B or Kie, she decides she should probably take the van back to the Chateau in case John B needed it. He's still not there when she parks the twinkie in its usual spot on the lawn, and she gets a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. She shouldn't have driven away. She should have waited just a couple more seconds for them to get out of the lighthouse. John B was probably rotting in a jail cell. He wouldn't last long in prison, he was too pretty.
Despite her bad feeling, she starts to make the walk back to her house. She was hungry and sweaty and wanted to lay in her bed. Lawson would be at work so she didn't have to worry about his attitude right now. After a cold shower and changing into not sweaty clothes, she sits down at her desk to write. Now more than ever before, her feelings were overwhelming her. Specifically, her feelings for JJ. She knew she could talk to Kie about it, but she almost felt weird doing that. JJ was her friend too and she didn't want to make their dynamic awkward because Kie was keeping all these secrets from him. So she wrote about them, knowing that no one would ever read what she was writing. She just wrote the first thing that comes to mind when she sits down with her pen to paper, a stream of consciousness. Sometimes, it would last for five minutes, sometimes it would last for five hours. She really went into a black hole when she was writing.
She had always wanted to be a writer, whether it be a journalist or a novelist, she had been writing stories since she had learned how to write, and before that she was always telling them. Her mom had been a writer, never that successful but always passionate about it. When Lane wrote, she felt a sense of connection with her mom. Maybe that's why she enjoyed it so much.
"Lane." She shrieks, whipping around in her desk chair to glare at John B who has his head poked through her window.
"Dude, what the fuck?" She groans, "You scared the shit out of me." She shuts her journal and walks over to the window, "Look, I'm sorry we left you I wanted to wait but JJ and Pope were yelling at me and-"
"It's okay." John B cuts her off, "Don't worry about it, I have another idea." He leaves her window and Lane opens her mouth to speak but stops, throws her shoes on, and runs out her front door to follow him into the van.
"Another idea about Redfield?" She asks him as she tosses him the keys to the van and he starts it up.
"Yeah," He smiles at her, "I'll explain once everyone else is here." He tells her as they start driving in the direction of JJ's place. "Also, I kissed Kie." Lane's head snaps to look at him.
"You WHAT?!"
After the Kie and John B drama is resolved, he drags them to a cemetery. And yes, it's pitch black outside. They all have their flashlights and are following John B basically blindly.
"Come on." He hurries them.
"This place is scary," Kie says what they're all thinking. "John B, what are we doing?"
"You know how you're trying to remember a song and you can't remember who sings it?" He asks them.
"Yes." Lane says, "But I don't know what that has to do with the fact that we are literally at the beginning of a horror film right now."
"I'm getting there." John B sighs, "So, Redfield, this whole time I thought it was a place, right?" They come up to this old and decrepit crypt in the middle of the cemetery, "But it's not a place." He holds his light up to the top of the crypt, revealing the name Redfield, "It's a person."
"Voi-effing-la," JJ says in amazement
"My great-great-grandmother, Olivia Redfield. It was her maiden name." John B explains. They all kind of stare at the crypt for a minute, some in shock, some still confused as to what they're doing here exactly, "Help me with the door." John B finally says. Pope steps up and starts to help him push on the door but it isn't budging at all. JJ steps up to lend his strength.
"This door is like 700 pounds, man, it's not gonna budge." Pope grunts
"We didn't come this far, to get this far, alright?" JJ tells Pope through gritted teeth as the girls stand back and watch them struggle. As they're pushing, though, a snake makes its way out of one of the cracks in the door.
"Oh hell no." Lane jumps back. One animal that she did not fuck with was snakes. From a distance, sure, but this was not a distance.
"That's a moccasin alright," JJ says, "Ye Old Dr. Cottonmouth." He starts stepping around the snake as it slithers off into the grass, "Death in tall grass." And then this blond weirdo starts barking at the thing.
"JJ shut up! Shut up!" Kie snaps at him
"You're gonna wake the freaking dead, man." Pope smacks his arm.
"They're afraid of dogs." JJ defends himself simply, "Everyone knows that, man." John B starts to go back to the door to try and open it, "Wait, hold on." JJ grabs his shoulder, "Where there's one there's probably dozens." He turns to look at everyone
"JJ stop." Lane groans, "You're scaring me." And then he starts fucking barking again.
"Shut up." Pope says firmly, "John, look, we're not gonna get in there. It's not budging. We should probably just go." He says
Lane is looking around the crypt, stepping closer to it as she's sure that if there were any more snakes nearby they would have made themselves known by now with all of their noise. She shines her light up and notices a hold above the door, "Hey, I can get through that." She points up to the hole.
"Wait, what?" John B asks, "No, no, no, you think you're gonna fit through the hole?"
"Look, this is about your dad." Lane looks over at him, "I know if the roles were reversed and I didn't know what happened to my parents, you'd go into a crypt for me." She shrugs, "I'll do it, just get those branches out of the way."
Pope and John B pull the heavy branches and vines away from the hole, "Give her a boost." John B tells JJ.
"I'm gonna give you a boost," JJ bends down, latching his hands together, "I've seen it in the movies several times." He brushes his hair back, "Ready?"
"Hold my flashlight." She hands it to John B.
"Okay, on three," She places her foot on JJ's hands and just goes ahead and hoists herself up, stretching her hands to reach into the hole, "Never mind, just forget about three." JJ grunts as he boosts her up and she climbs in through the hold, carefully sliding down into the crypt.
"Okay," She dusts herself off, "I'm alive. Flashlight?" She asks and John B hands it over to her through the hole. She shines the lights around in the crypt, kind of in amazement that she was in here. "I don't see anything yet...I need some more light."
"Yeah, I gotcha." John B holds his lantern through the hole, lighting the small room up just a little bit more. She uses her light to focus on little corners and spaces his light doesn't reach, and that's when she sees it.
"Awful quiet in there, Laney, did you find anything? Is there gold?" JJ calls to her. It wasn't gold to any other person, but to John B this would be gold.
"Oh my god." She whispers to herself.
Sorry, it took me a while to get this one up, finals week kicked my ass. I know this one is super long but I thought I would get all of episode two done in one chapter so we can get to the real good stuff sooner. As usual, I hope you guys enjoyed and let me know what you think?
