So this story is going to become part of my NaNoWriMO project (sorta) and going to post things as they are now. Chapters are going to be long to get every detail in. I'm also not dragging out whose kid is whose, all the pairs are revealed in this chapter except one (which will be told soon). As usual please review, it helps me publish and write a lot faster knowing that someone is enjoying this story besides me!
Happy reading!
Instinctively Kuki took Wally's hand as soon as they opened their eyes. Next to them Abby, Hoagie, and Nigel wiping theirs. The five operatives glanced at each other and then around them. Stacks and stacks of boxes far above their heads. Various items sticking out from them included old trophies, clothes, and some random paperwork. A stray toy or two visible here and there.
"Where are…" said Kuki before Hoagie slapped his hand over her mouth.
From around the corner of boxes they could hear distant voices. Getting closer they peered over around some of the boxes. Gasping a little Abby could very clearly see that these were those kids that were on the other side of that camera lens.
Charlie and Dakota were tossing popcorn into each other's mouths. Jackie stuffing as much stuff as she could into an empty box with Adi helping her. Hunter and Terrence playing a game with some marbles that they had found. Oh my gosh, they were in the future. They could see Tommy working on his time machine wiggling things around. Knowing how things usually worked for him, Hoagie couldn't stop himself.
"Tommy stop!" shouted Hoagie running over to his brother keeping him from breaking their only way home.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared a bit surprised. From his spot Tommy turned to look at Hoagie barreling right at him.
"Hoagie!?" he said before the two brothers were rolling around on top of each other.
Confused but acting quick Terrence and Adi were pulling the two off each other. They were staring each other and breathing heavily. Hoagie glanced at Tommy's time machine wondering if numbuh 362 and sector W had seen him do that. Man, this was embarrassing but not as much as Tommy forgetting about bringing him to the future with him.
From their spot a bit distracted Wally pulled at a Yipper comic poking out of a box. The boxes stacked on top of it fragile enough to come toppling down on top of sector v. Abby pulling them out of the way before being buried underneath what appeared to be old office supplies. Loose leaf paper flying everywhere, and paperclips rained down on the small group.
Standing up where he sat Hunter set aside the marbles. Jackie oblivious to what happened was happening, was humming to herself putting things in her box before swirling around to see them. Charlie and Dakota had dropped their popcorn that came from who knows where. Finally, Adi and Terrence stopped with Hoagie and Tommy looking all at them.
"Err, surprise?" said Abby with many eyes on them.
"Ohh there's another surprise?" asked Kuki looking at her friend, "where? I looove surprises!"
Slapping a hand to her face Abby just shook her head.
It was dead silent as the boxes creaked next to them before falling apart. More supplies fell out of the broken box. A small avalanche of pens covered their shoes. Eyes wide and curious the future kids hesitantly stepped forward.
From behind them an English voice called down to them. "Hey Charlie, mum called asking what you want for dinner," said the disembodied voice.
Turning his attention from them for a minute, he turned toward the door. "Anything but pizza Mags!" he called. Then turned to them who watched him curiously while he pointed at them. "Whatever you do don't eat it for a week straight, it just tastes bad and you get sick and tired of it."
It was silent again before they heard the footsteps. The teenage girl from earlier stepped over a box that was in front of the door. "Mum wants to know if fried chicken sounds good," she said as everyone stared at her.
"Fried chicken sounds great, get some extra drum sticks and that mac and cheese is good too," said Charlie and looked at his friends. "You guys hanging around?"
Adi shared a look with her friends and then at Sector V.
"Um, I guess?" she said.
Mags just shrugged and spoke into her phone.
"Charlie has his friends over, so I guess make that two of those big sharable buckets." She looked over at the past sector v operatives and raised her eyebrows confused and opened her mouth before shutting it. Then put a finger up for them to hold on a minute. "Yea mum, I'll see you in an hour. Love you too, bye."
Then it became even more quiet as she pocketed her phone.
"So, do I need an explanation or…" said Mags waving her hand around slightly.
"No, don't worry we'd like to know what's going on too," said Adi crossing her arms and looked stern. "Explanations now."
The future kids just shuffled their feet unable to explain, because they had no idea. That meant that it was the past sector V that needed an explanation. Until finally Hoagie sat up and glared at his brother. Taking a breath, he turned to everyone else in the room.
"We didn't have missions today until our communication hotline went off. There was some audio of what sounded like Tommy on a mission himself. I yelled at the screen for him to tell me what was going on and no answer. My sector went out to check and he was nowhere to be found where we thought he was. Then we got a visual of all of you with Tommy on a mission of your own."
All the future kids shared confused look before it clicked. They had seen them finish off Ice Cream Man about an hour ago. That did not explain how they got there though. The future kids still quiet trying to piece together the rest of the story.
"We saw you come here and faced Father, which is very dangerous and stupid by the way. We learn that you are Numbuh 1's kid," said Hoagie turning and gestured to Charlie. Then to Mags for good measure as she cleared her throat. "You started to mess with your time machine, and I messed with the communications booth making both go off. Next thing we're zapped here. Why didn't you tell me you made this Tommy?"
He looked like he was going to defend himself before the redheaded girl stepped forward.
"Give me one second."
She went over and went into his time machine. Still miffed Hoagie glared daggers at his brother shaking his head. This was crazy, he was not going to have this. They needed to get back to their own time period and destroy this thing before they messed up the time stream.
Jackie peered out the door and flipped her long hair.
"Yep, audio and visual was kicked on. Probably during the fight against Ice Cream Man. It looks like it was rerouted to a power source that could charge it," she said, "You pressed the green button, right?"
"Yep," said Tommy looking around at his friends.
"Looks like it transported those closest to the communications booth here, where you were," said Jackie. "Want me to turn it off…"
"You charge it in our treehouse!?" said Hoagie practically screaming cutting her off.
"Well last time I tried charging it at home I knocked the power out. It's not like you're ever home to know what I'm working on," said Tommy sticking his tongue out at him. "You never want to know what I'm working on anymore. You drop off something for me to fix and you don't want to do things with me anymore."
Ouch, that hurt thought Hoagie as he stepped back from his brother. Jackie quietly going around them trying to go unnoticed. He drove his own brother to go to the future to look for friends it seemed.
"Well you never told me."
"I try to tell you all the time."
Hoagie stepped forward to his brother before Adi stepped forward and put a hand between them.
"Okay deep calming breaths," she said gesturing for them and showing them how to breath. Tommy mimicked her as Hoagie did the same.
"And you guys think that I'm the dramatic one," said Jackie.
They stared at her with a long look, wow this was not the time for jokes as she twirled some of her hair in her hands.
"Alright apparently that still holds true. I'm pretty proud of that actually."
She cleared her own throat before turning their attention back to Hoagie and Tommy who were calming down from their spat.
Tommy thought about it and watched his brother before sighing. He looked at Mags and Charlie knowing how their great uncle and grandpa's relationship turned out. Then turned to Hoagie holding out a hand.
"I'm sorry for not telling you next time I'll let you know what I'm doing. I'll drop you guys off back at home."
"I'm sorry too Tommy, even if I don't show it, I'll always be interested in doing something with you."
They shared a smile before Jackie stepped in.
"Now hug!"
Hoagie awkwardly put his arms around his brother as the girls awed at the sweet brotherly moment. Jackie putting a hand on her chest before hugging them herself. She pulled apart and stepped back to join her team. It was nice sweet brotherly moment as they were looking anywhere but at each other.
Taking a deep breath, it was Kuki that spoke up next. "If we're going to have to leave, I want to know which kid is mine first," she said. Then pointed at Terrence and Adi. "If we're in the future one of you two has to be my kid."
Adi and Terrence shared a look before shrugging.
"Yea I'd like to know exactly who Tommy is hanging out with."
"Hoagie!" hissed Tommy.
"What? It's not like I'm asking to meet their parents or anything. It's likely that I already know them."
He looked like was going to fight again before Adi found something to stand on and waved her arms.
"Okay no more fighting. Let's do this calmly and rationally."
Hunter helped her down as she now had their attention. "It sounds like Tommy's time machine had recorded us and you likely know our names, but we might as well introduce ourselves anyway."
"Agreed," said Nigel finally finding his voice. He glanced quickly at Charlie and Mags unsure what to say to them. Then finally stood up straight and proper. For a fleeting moment he wondered if Rachel was still watching or abandoned the communications room for her school supplies mission. Nevertheless, he started. "I am numbuh 1 or Nigel, leader of sector V."
He stepped back and let Hoagie take over next as he glanced at Charlie again.
"Numbuh 2, Hoagie, two by four technologist of sector V," he said proudly.
"Numbuh 3, Kuki and I'm a distraction," she said head turning from Terrence to Adi for a reaction. When she didn't get it, she crossed her arms with a huff.
"Ahh numbuh 4, Wally," he said and punched his fist into his other hand. "And I'm a fighter mostly."
A little suspicious Abby turned to them next. "Numbuh 5, Abby, I'm a spy usually," she said still unsure.
It was quiet again although this was mostly for the future operatives to turn to each other. Dakota looked disappointed but not surprised. Jackie looked relieved more than anything. Terrence was grinning a little. Adi, Hunter, Charlie, and Mags just all shared a look.
The future kids all looked at each other unsure how to go about it.
"Alright I'll start," said Mags looking up at them and did a little wave at them. "Mainly because I have to make sure Great Uncle Ben doesn't get too close to the freezer. My name is Margaret Clara Uno, but I go by Maggie or Mags. There's a cool story behind it but I'm not going into it now. Um, that's about it."
She glanced at the door as Nigel got a good long look at her. Besides having his brown hair, she also had his blue eyes behind oval dark rimmed glasses a reminiscent of sunglasses. Upon closer inspection he could see features from Rachel as well. She had her nose and round face, she might have had the same body type too, but he had no idea was Rachel looked like older.
"Go," said Charlie and she booked it off yelling a thank you as she went. "I'm the only person from my sector here so I guess I'll introduce myself next. My name is Charlie and I am a distractionist for sector E."
"Sector E?!" said Nigel a little stunned as he heard that. Kuki gasped out loud. His teammates all shared a look with each other, also deeply confused.
"I will take questions when we're am done, that's a rather long and somewhat boring answer."
He grinned at him before gesturing for his friends to start. Nigel still deeply confused as he looked at Charlie. He looked kind of like him he supposed. This boy had his nose and Rachel's blond hair for one thing, except his was lighter from being out in the sun more. He didn't wear glasses like his sister. His crew neck sweater was striped between a dark and a light teal; his pants a dark brown color. Another thing he noticed is that Charlie was tall, indicating that he was probably a little older than ten. Aside from all that he looked a lot like Nigel.
The others all shuffled trying to think of the best thing to say. Jackie vehemently against saying her last name for some reason. Charlie rolled his eyes before turning to sector v.
"So, assuming you saw everything, you know that you're my dad, right?" he asked to Nigel.
Behind him Kuki was giggling some with Wally and Hoagie joining in with her. Abby just grinning some knowing exactly who he married and had children with. Nigel shot them all a long hard look shutting them up.
"Uh yea and numbuh, er, Rachel is your mom?" said Nigel with more questions on the tip of his tongue. He glanced at the other sector still in a whispered argument. Clearing his throat Charlie just nodded.
"Yea trust me on this though, there are no special perks like you think there would be," he said. "I don't get access to anything."
"Just because your mom used to be supreme leader means nothing," said Adi reminding him.
Charlie jokingly mimicking her as she said that a slight smile on her face. Rolling her eyes Adi just turned to them.
"We're start by introducing us and then tell you who we are in relation to you. Believe it or not you know our parents."
The girl cleared her throat and nodded at them.
"I'm Adi, I'm numbuh 95 of sector W and this is my team actually, I'm the leader."
She stepped back as Terrence stepped forward next. "I'm Terrence, numbuh 96 and I'm second in command and do some spy work."
"I'm Hunter," he said glancing at sector V, "numbuh 97 and I'm the team medic."
Jackie stepped forward this time as everyone tried to get a good look at her. She relished in the limelight and struck a pose. Her auburn red hair bounced behind her. "I'm Jackie, my full name is really Jacqueline. I'm numbuh 98 and I'm 2x4 technologist."
Finally, Dakota waved as he stood up last. "I'm Dakota obviously, I'm numbuh 99 and hand to hand combat. And while I'm here I'm just going to tell you out right that you know my parents. They were in the kids next door with you. Numbuh 23 is my mom, Virginia Sims. In fact, that's how you'll probably remember me. Both of us have names that are states. My dad is numbuh 35, I look a lot like him though."
Sector V all shared a look with each other as Abby looked him over. She really didn't know 35 and 23 all too well but she could see it. He had 35's light brown hair and 23's hazel eyes.
"Cool," said Kuki. "I know numbuh 23. Please tell me which one of you is mine though."
"You'll get there trust me," said Dakota. "And it will be worth knowing."
They all turned to look at Terrence, Adi and Hunter next.
Adi and Hunter were doing rock paper scissors over something. These kids were slightly crazy thought Abby as she looked over at them. Oh… Wait a second.
"Okay I'll outright tell ya," said Terrence. "My parents aren't here either. My mom is numbuh 83 and my dad is numbuh 84. Sector W operatives, you might know them though."
Abby glanced at the time machine wondering if they even stuck around. Or if the camera was even running. Was this mission still being recorded? Wow, what she would give to be in the treehouse right now. Especially if 362 AND 363 were still there. His two teammates ended up together.
"Come on Adi really?"
"I want to get it over with."
"Well me too," said Hunter.
Not wanting a long drawn out surprise and just glancing at the two kids it was obvious. Especially the way that they were reacting to everything. Plus, Kuki was impatiently waiting for her answer. Sighing Abby realized what was up before they could even tell her. Not only that but the freak out would take way to long.
Stomach flip flopping she went up to Wally and Kuki pushing them next to each other. Confused Abby made them stay there. Then put Hoagie somewhere just as easily accessible. Finally going over and tapped Adi's shoulder.
"Alright it doesn't take a rocket scientist to solve this. Not only that but it's obvious at this point. Abby's surprised but not as shocked as you think. No drama necessary."
"What are you talking about numbuh 5?" asked Nigel.
Abby pushed Hunter over to Hoagie and leaned him much like she did when they paired off to go to that party. "Hoagie, meet our son."
Oh. The room was silent as Hoagie's eyes went from Hunter to Abby. Then back around before glancing at Tommy, nodding yes, who was just amused at the entire thing. Hoagie glanced at Hunter who just shook his head too. Wow.
"Ahh man, you're not a scientist though," said Hoagie pouting a bit. Abby just swatted his shoulder as Hunter just laughed instead of being insulted. "Sorry it's…
"It's okay I get it. If it helps my sister likes to tinker with some stuff," he said as Abby's eyes grew wide.
"Sister?" she asked now a little more stunned.
Hunter just nodded. "She's way more talkative then me though. Her name is Nora and she's younger than me. Nora didn't join the kids next door though, so you probably won't see her unless I take you home with me."
"Which probably isn't a good idea," said Abby.
Hoagie just looked upset at hearing that. "Aww why not?" he asked. "I'd like to see what we're like."
Abby shook her head before turning to help Adi next. It was quiet again, honestly this had to be the first time her entire sector was quiet for a long period of time. Nobody was ever not doing anything instead of just standing around.
Getting what she had to Adi just walked over to Wally and Kuki. The look on her face of determination and relief.
"So, I'm your daughter," she said to them outright.
Nobody expected Wally to just faint right on the floor with Kuki pulling her in close for a bear hug.
"I knew it!" she called and look at numbuh 4 on the floor. Oh, she thought, before turning to her daughter. "Why don't we stayed here and helped you pick things out, you can tell me all about you. Then we can go home. This is so cool! My daughter is a leader."
"So, is it question time now?" asked Nigel to Charlie.
Behind them the door opened as Maggie pulled in a large plastic tub.
"Alright, I don't wanna know what's going on but if you find anything personal like photos or paperwork, please put in here for grandpa." She leaned in close to her brother to say something but loud enough for everyone else to hear. "What did you do?"
"For the first time this was not me sis." He was grinning at her and Maggie bumped up against him lightly.
She only shook her head and headed back to the door. "Call me if you need me."
From his spot Tommy looked around at everyone awkwardly trying to get to know one another. This was going to be interesting.
It was going to start getting confusing before long though as they kept glancing each other's way.
"Why don't we start by asking the questions you have?" asked Terrence looking around at everyone. "That way we don't have as much to explain later. One at a time please."
He glanced at everyone who had their own questions on their lips.
"And general questions if you have anything specific, I'd just ask us individually," said Adi perking up. "If it helps, we don't have to go by our codenames around here. First names would be better, so we don't get more headaches then we already have."
To emphasize her point she rubbed her head as Kuki nodded at her teammates to pay attention.
Finally, it was Abby who spoke up first.
"How do you know what our numbuh's are? You didn't even look surprised. I mean the kids next door doesn't keep track of operatives once they leave, we destroy the files so no one could find them. Operatives like numbuh 0 or sector Z are known by their sectors or codenames not by first names," said Abby as the kids already had an answer prepared.
"It's a complicated story, but in a nutshell it's something called the golden list. It keeps track of all former operatives and their kids. We have it for like recruitment purposes and such. It was created when…" started Dakota as Charlie nudged him shaking his head to just stick with the one answer. "Well that's the complicated part but everyone in the kids next door know who you are and your kids. And any other operatives' kids for that matter."
Abby listened and nodded although curious about the full story.
"Why are you in sector E?" asked Nigel looking at his son. This was a full blown out story that everyone needed to know.
"Well when you're about thirteen Grandma had gotten a call from a friend in England and told her that a job had become available. She applied for the children's department head at the great library just to try, not sure if she'd get it. They liked her resume and she got the job."
"My parents moved me back to England?!" asked Nigel surprised as his friends all looked very sad at this revelation.
"Yea but they weren't going to move you if you didn't think that you'd see your friends. My grandparents had it arranged to visit this area every summer. Grandpa got caught up with Ben and his dad. It's just been that way ever since."
Nigel felt his brain whirling as he looked at his friends. They all seemed to perk up at the fact that he'd see him every year regardless. "So how did…?"
"You meet mum? She went to school in England, long story short her grandpa used to study there, and she wanted to follow in his footsteps, they were close. See the same things he saw and such, but she just ended up staying full time. It also helps that you both share the same friend group," said Charlie gesturing around to the small group.
Rachel had become friends with his friends. It made sense; they were in the same school district after all. Not only that but he knew about how her grandpa used to be in England before.
It was quiet as Kuki had thrown her arms around Nigel in a hug. Followed by everyone else as they hugged tightly for a minute. Charlie just smiled as Adi joined in as well. Okay so they knew about that. Something about a golden list.
"Okay wait so why are you here?" asked Nigel looking alarmed. "In Father's mansion? I heard that my grandpa died and…"
"Pretty much that. Everything in his will was left to my grandpa and he's left to sort it out. You and mum are helping. Normally we'd stay with grandma on my mum's side, but grandpa wanted us to stay with Ben. Something about sticking with him and that we should be supportive, it's his dad. Want to hear something funny? He's not allowed near the stove, the oven, freezer and we're supposed to keep an eye out on him."
Nigel's eyebrows were practically above his hairline, if he had any that is, hearing that. He wasn't allowed near any of that. Snorting he laughed a little not wanting to press why. Father retired and what he did after that was his business. Kuki had nudged him nodding smartly that it was her that suggested that they were sorting out the will.
"So, we shouldn't reveal a lot yet," said Hunter speaking up. "Just so that you don't get spoiled too much."
Kuki looked at him for a minute and just laughed. "You can tell us anything you want, because we'll just all get decommissioned and forget this ever happened," she said smartly as everyone stared at her.
Adi just beamed proudly. Her mother was smarter than most gave her credit for. Although she raised her eyebrows at her team to be a little discreet, Abby technically wasn't decommissioned. She probably remembered a little of this. She glanced at Abby noting how young she was. There was plenty of more adventures in store for her to remember this much.
"Okay how about we give away enough but not too much, I mean don't you want some surprises?" asked Adi.
"I do like surprises," said Kuki happily. "Um, okay so… where do I work?"
"Walk with me, talk with me," said Adi taking her wrist and Wally's. She nodded at her team to do the same with their parents or to continue searching for parts. They all got the hint as Hunter stayed near his parents and Charlie did with his dad. Jackie, Dakota, and Terrence went off as their own small group.
Recap for the future kids! I put their ages in the parenthesis just to show how much older (or younger) the kids are to their parents from the past.
