After losing in one of her first few matches in Apex Games, Mary returned to her quarters to continue unpacking her belongings that were left back on Olympus. It wasn't too many things, but it was enough to make her new home feel like...well, home.
Then, she finally reached the photo of her and her son.
"Hey, Newton…" She softly said to the photo.
NEWT thought Mary was speaking to them, floating over to her. She heard them coming, resting a hand on top of the robot before looking back at the photo.
"It's been a wee bit of bad apples in the Games for me, but Newty and I will see ya' real soon! You know I gotta' ask, how was your day…how was school…h-how about work? Oh, don't worry, dearie. I know ya' can handle anything like ya' always do…" Mary said to the photo, eyes getting a little blurry due to tears. "Just a couple more wins and I'll be with ya' real soon, Newton...don't worry."
Mary bit her lip, trying to hold back her tears, but some finally fell. She knew getting back to her son was going to take too long, but she needed to try.
NEWT beeped at her, making her set down the photo to wipe her tears.
"I'm alright. Just gotta' do the occasional hellos to make sure we're both alright in our time periods, Newty." Mary responded, smirking down at her robot when she heard a knock on her open door.
Mary looked over her shoulder, seeing Elliot in the doorway of her quarters. She rose to her full height, sniffling and fixing at some of her curls.
"Ah! Mirage, right? Didn't I win a game with ya' in my first match here? You're not quite like the enthusiastic blue robot, are ya? Though, you got a lot of fighten' in ya' to make up for it." Mary said, stepping up to him as happy as she could look.
Elliot scoffed, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Thank-you, I-I guess." He replied with a smile. "I heard you're a scientist, right?"
Mary nodded.
"I am. An astrophysicist to be exact."
"So...you study space?"
Mary nodded again. Elliot lost eye contact, thinking about his words.
"I-I know you probably wouldn't know her, but have you ever met a woman by the name Evelyn Witt? She-uh...she didn't exactly study what you studied, but scientists and engineers always work together eventually, right?"
Mary scrunched her nose, looked up at the ceiling, and began to search through her memory on that name.
"Hmmm, Evelyn Witt? Geez, I don't even think I even worked with a Witt before…" She answered, still in thought.
"I guess you are now...s-since you worked with me," Elliot responded.
Mary looked back at him.
"Oh? You must be the son, yeah?"
"Her youngest."
"Oh, dearie. How old are ya'? You look like you just hit thirty."
"Uh…"
"Mirage, your mum has to be younger than me. I'm supposed to be thirty-seven, but add almost a century lost in space."
Elliot's eyes widen in disbelief, but he shouldn't have since he already met Revenant.
"A...A century?" Elliot repeated before rubbing his face with frustration.
Mary tilted her head in confusion, beginning to spin her pen around her fingers.
"What's wrong?" She asked Elliot. "Do you want to talk about it, dearie?"
"No, uh...I-it's alright. I see you're trying to still unpack and I'll-uh...I'll leave you to that." Elliot answered with a quick wave before turning to leave.
Mary stopped her pen from spinning, glanced down at NEWT to see if they understood Elliot's body language, but NEWT only looked up at her just the same, confused. Though, Mary didn't want Elliot to leave so heartbrokenly.
"Aye, Mirage! Sit in my chair and talk to me about whatever is on ya' mind, yeah? I'd love to try and help." Mary called for Elliot, chasing after him before he was too far down the hall.
Elliot was thinking about her offer, suddenly stopping to look back at her over his shoulder. His eyes were a little watery, but it wasn't noticeable.
"Mirage…did your mum pass away?" Mary asked softly, keeping the conversation private than having it echoed down the hallways of the dropship.
Elliot stared at her for a little while longer in silence before fully facing Mary. It was difficult for him to give direct eye contact as he rubbed at the back of his neck.
"No. She-uh…she has Alzheimer's and she didn't tell me a lot about what she did at the labs, only what she does in her career. So, I-uh…I-I thought maybe I had a chance on learning more about her from someone that could have possibly known her." He explained to Mary as his body grew tense.
Mary nodded, waving her hand for him to enter her room, so he could talk about his mother more in private. Elliot hesitated before finally sighing and walking after her. Mary motioned him to take a seat in her chair beside her desk while she took a seat on a small stool.
"You told me she was an engineer, correct?" Mary asked as NEWT floated to her. She pats the robot's head before focusing her eyes back on Elliot who was still a little nervous to speak. So, Elliot nodded to her.
"I see you're an expert on Holography as well. Was she too?" Mary continued.
Elliot scoffed, scratching at his head.
"Mom taught me and I learned more as I grew older. I thought it was so cool when she showed my brothers and I what she would create at the labs. One Christmas, she made us this cool hologram race track that ran through the entire house. My brothers and I used to play with it all the time before I-uh…I accidentally spilled water over the base of the hologram. I was…helping her water some of her plants on the kitchen table."
Mary smirked at Elliot's little story, but hearing about his mom bringing home little presents for him while he was a kid had her thinking of Newton. Elliot continued telling stories about Evelyn Witt and Mary allowed him since it helped him seem a bit happier than how he was a few moments ago.
"…Horizon? You' alright?" Elliot suddenly asked Mary, catching her attention, and making her realize that she had lost her eye contact. She was staring down at the floor with tears dripping from her eyes.
"Oh! Um…" Mary begins to explain, quickly wiping her tears away. "Sorry...I guess all those beautiful memories of you and your mum got me a bit teary-eyed. Don't worry about me though, I'll love to hear more about her."
Elliot gave her a long stare of curiosity.
"What about you? Do you have any family rooting you on?" He asked her.
Mary didn't expect the focus to be on her, so she hesitated on the answer.
Well…he did just tell me his whole mum's life story. She thought.
"I'm hoping to return to my son. Around these years ya' livn' in, him and I should have already passed on by now. I was betrayed on an expedition to get an element when Newton was just a boy and I left him alone on Olympus while I was stranded in space with high hopes of returning to him." Mary finally answered.
Elliot was in shock at her response, making his family issues sound more like a happy ending. Though, he understood that he and Mary both were working hard for someone they loved to death and that the Apex Games was the only thing keeping them from a happier change in their lives.
"Well…I-if you want any help, I got a few people here who might be willing to do so. Myself included." Elliot responded, showing Mary a nervous grin.
Mary smiled at him warmly.
"Thank-you, Mirage." She replied.
"Uh…y-you call me Elliot…If you want to, of course."
"And, you can call me Mary."
Elliot lost eye contact due to his embarrassment. He didn't want Mary to understand that talking to someone about his Mom helped him a lot. He has spoken to Renee, Makoa, and Ajay a few times about her before, but talking with Mary…it seems she understood more.
"Hey-uh…M-Mary? Thanks-uh…thanks for listening to me." Elliot suddenly blurted out.
"Oh! No worries, dear! A lil' talk can go a long way, you know?"
