Chapter 2: Volturi
I stared into the flames, lit by the enemy coven to burn the bodies, as I wondered who the Volturi were and why they were coming. Probably to execute me. I wondered if I could sneak away. As I started racking through possible escape routes in my mind, Bella spoke.
"The Volturi? But then won't they know I'm still…" She trailed off. Edward whispered something to her and she shifted closer to him. He was very protective.
I could suddenly make out four figures through the fog. There was one figure in the front. She was smaller than the others, but she held herself as if she was in charge. She had blonde hair and bright red eyes, but they looked cold and empty. I shivered.
The biggest was not a step behind the smallest. They looked alike, with the same bright red eyes and facial features, but it was obvious that he was not in charge. The next two had duller red eyes and were acting as bodyguards, I assumed.
They came closer and stopped. The one in charge looked startled that they had handled it already without their help. She looked around as if she were looking for someone to kill.
"Hello. I didn't expect you to get rid of them so quickly. It isn't often we are rendered unnecessary." She said. Her voice had a slithery tint to it which made me like her even less. Edward stepped forward.
"If you would have come 30 minutes earlier, Jane, you would've fulfilled your purpose." I could tell that Jane was trying not to kill him. She suddenly looked at me. She smiled cruelly. I prepared to run.
"You missed one." She pointed at me. Esme replied.
"She surrendered." I felt so thankful. Maybe I wasn't going to die. Jane made a clicking sound.
"Who created you?" Jane asked. I suddenly felt pain all along my body, and I screamed. I fell to the floor.
"You don't need to do that. She'll tell you anything." Carlisle said. Jane smiled.
"Riley never told us. He said our thoughts weren't safe." I panted. Jane frowned. She stepped towards me, stopping right in front of me. She gasped and looked at Carlisle.
"She is unlike any vampires I have ever seen. She has three powers, and her eyes are not red, as a newborn's eyes are supposed to be. I haven't seen a vampire like her." The biggest stepped forward and whispered something in her ear. She shook her head.
"I don't think Aro would want to kill someone as valuable as Bree," Jane said with annoyance. I relaxed. I probably wasn't going to die today. Jane looked back at Carlisle.
"You can keep her if you get her under control within a year. We will take visits every two months. Now, goodbye. I would like to go home." She turned and swept away, pulling her hood back over her face. The others were not a step behind her.
Carlisle came over and helped me up. I smiled at him, and he smiled back. Esme came over to me.
"Shall we start with the introductions? I'm Esme, this is Carlisle, Rosalie, Jasper, Alice, Emmett, Edward, and Bella." I already knew that of course, but I wasn't going to interrupt her. They led me back to their house. It was majestic and grand. I was astonished.
"Edward, please show Bree to her room," Carlisle said. "You can hunt after you do that," Edward growled, not wanting to leave Bella's side. He glared at me, then stomped up the stairs.
It sounded like stomping to other vampires, but really it sounded like normal walking to humans, I followed him hesitantly. He showed me to a room. It had no bed - since vampires couldn't sleep - but instead a small sofa. It had a big window with curtains on either side of it, and sunlight shone through. There was a phone and a charger with a password written on a piece of paper, and a computer with its own charger. The room also had a bookcase with over one hundred books, a big walk-in closet, and a master bathroom. Strangely, there was a washer and dryer in the room. Basically, everything I needed, except for my diet.
"Your lessons will begin tomorrow, on how not to hunt humans, and school will begin for you in a week." Edward swiftly closed the door and swept away. I sat down and covered my face. I didn't know if it was possible for vampires to cry, but somehow I managed it. A quiet knock came from the door. I turned, ready to say leave me alone if it was Edward and his hostile gaze.
I was surprised to see Esme there, and behind her was Alice. Alice was older than me, but she seemed to have a lot of energy. Esme was less energetic, but had beautiful kind eyes. They both came and sat down on the floor next to me. Alice gave me some tissues, and I gratefully took them.
"Don't worry," Alice said. "Edward just needs time to get used to you. But trust me, he will. I can see the future." Esme patted my back and stood up. She opened the walk-in closet and took out some new clothes.
"How about you go take a shower, and tomorrow me and Alice will take you out for your first lesson," Esme suggested. I nodded and stood up. I took the clothes from Esme.
"Thank you," I said, and went into the bathroom. I took a warm shower and put on new clothes. I had only worn my other clothes since I was turned into a vampire, and it felt good to wear something clean.
I opened the door and stepped back into the room. Esme and Alice were gone, not wanting to intrude. I put my old clothes into the wash, then the drier, once it was done. I found a sewing kit on the table beside the couch. I sewed all the holes and gaps together, and it looked good as new. I hung up my clothes in the closet.
I spent some time at night reading books and I started a new story. I had many questions for the Cullens. And couldn't think of anything else but that. So I put the story away and layed down on the couch looking up at the ceiling, wondering what would be next in the chapter of my life.
