"Jace opened his eyes and it was still dark out, his room was drenched in light from the lamp outside his window but the sky was still dotted with stars. He looked down at Clary who was snuggled in the crook of his arm with her arms wrapped tightly around his waist. Her normally peaceful face was contorted and she looked like she was having a nightmare, her grip around his waist tightened and her breathing became erratic. Jace shook her lightly not wanting to startle her but her eyes stayed shut and the nightmare seemed to get worse.

"Clary, hey Clary wake up." He shook her again and this time her eyes flew open full of terror and tears. She yelped and pushed off of Jace throwing herself to the other side of the bed, her hair fell in wispy swirls around her face and her eyes shone with tears. Jace was confused and terrified, Clary had, had nightmares before but he'd never seen her so worked up over one. "Clary…." She just stared at him her chest rising and falling rapidly while she tried to calm down, she was holding onto the blanket like it was her lifeline and tried desperately not to cry but the dream had seemed so real and when she closed her eyes she saw it all over again. She watched Sebastian take a seraph blade and call its name, she watched as the brilliant white light flashed above her head; as he brought it down coming closer and closer to her. And at the last second she saw Jace leap in front of her and watched the blade slice through his chest sending a spray of red blood across her face and drenching Sebastian's white shirt. She watched Jace fall to his knees his skin a deathly white color and couldn't move, couldn't speak as his golden eyes became lifeless and dark.

She looked up at him and his face was a mask of concern and love. Right now his eyes were still full of light and his cheeks had a healthy pink blush, but the image of him falling to the ground in a lifeless heap was almost too much for her to bear; even if it was just a dream. Jace climbed across the bed to her but kept a reasonable distance in case she decided to propel off of him again. "It was just a dream Clary" His voice was quiet and soft. It was comforting and warm and it was all Clary needed to hear to make her heart beat normally again. She scooted over to him positioning herself between his legs so she could look into his eyes but was still safe in his arms. "Jace-'' her voice cracked. "Jace it was terrible, it was the worst thing I've seen in my entire life. One second you were there and the next-'' Her tears started to fall without warning or sign of stopping until she was sobbing, her entire body shaking and she held onto Jace as tightly as she could with trembling hands. He ran his hand gently through her hair whispering that it was going to be alright over and over again until the sobbing turned into muffled sniffles, she buried her face in his shoulder and took deep breaths trying to calm down with Jace repeating those same words over and over.

Jace looked down at her, Clary felt so small in his arms and he was reminded just how frail she was. She wasn't frail in the real sense of the word; she was one of the toughest shadow hunters he'd ever trained, and one of the bravest especially if it came to saving her friends. No, Clary was only frail with Jace, when they were alone together behind closed doors. When neither one of them had to pretend to be brave for anyone, Jace imagined Clary thought much the same about him. It broke his heart to see her so crippled in front of him and all because he'd been in her dream, he knew Clary didn't blame him for that but he still found a way to blame himself. After her breathing had calmed and her grip loosened on his shirt she lifted her head to look up into his face, her eyes were still bright from crying and the tip of her nose was red, her red hair was a tangled mess from Jace's attempt at comforting her "I have such a bad feeling about tomorrow Jace and I don't know what I would do with myself if anything happened to you." Jace bit his lip and tried to keep it from quivering. The thought of leaving Clary or losing her was at the forefront of his mind before every battle, and with Sebastian becoming more and more of a nuisance it was impossible not to think about it constantly, seeing how upset she was filled him with an odd sort of sadness and it was all he could do to keep from breaking apart in front of her.

"I'm not going anywhere Fray, you're stuck with me forever understand me?" he asked brushing a loose strand of hair away from her forehead. She nodded but didn't say anything. "Hey'' he took her face in his hands and turned her chin up to look at up. "I'm right here Clary…. I'm not going anywhere." A single tear made its way down her cheek and Jace's heart seized up. He felt himself unraveling and his throat tightened with emotion. How could Sebastian do this even if he wasn't there he was tearing them apart. Clary finally looked up to see Jace's eyes full of tears and brought her hand to his cheek. He couldn't bring himself to make eye contact with her, he'd been trying so hard to be brave for Clary to keep it together for the both of them but with the looming devastation of the next day and everything that had happened in the past weeks, it finally caught up to him and it was almost a relief to break tears started gradually until they were streaming down his face he buried his face in the crook of her neck trying to hide his tears. She held him and it was his turn to shake and hold onto her. They sat like that for a while, Jace with his face in her neck and arms wrapped tightly around her waist and her hugging him close to her trying to put the broken pieces back together.

When he finally turned to look at her his golden eyes clouded with tears she cracked a small smile, "we really are a mess aren't we." Jace smirked at her, "Clarissa I'm trying to be emotional and share my feelings. Stop trying to cheer me up." Clary giggled and ruffled his hair lightly, "we're going to be okay aren't we?" Jace knew that even if he said it Clary wouldn't believe him so he propped himself up against the pillows and let her lay her head in his lap without saying anything. They spent the next hour laying in silence with Jace running his hands through her hair until she finally fell asleep. Once her eyes had closed and her breathing was even he repositioned them so they were cuddled up into a little ball their faces centimeters apart and he let himself drift off with the image of Clary's face behind his eyelids as he slipped into a dreamless sleep.
