(CHAPTER FIVE)

"SHIKAMARU~!"

With a start, Shikamaru woke to his name. The sound of it being screamed from across the room had his heart pounding.

Eyes wide in surprise. A faint violet glow was surrounding Sakura, he moved to her side and began shaking her. Trying desperately to pull her from whatever nightmare she was being forced into, Shikamaru searched the room with haste and settled his eyes on a jug of water. It wasn't the best idea to pour water on a sleeping Sakura. However, given the circumstances... "Tch, she's gonna kill me." He took the ceramic jug and lifted it into his hands, giving the pinkette one more hopeful look. When she didn't come out of the fog, he emptied the contents of the jug and watched as she shot forward in her bed. "Rise and shine, sleeping beauty." No yelling. No threats. No drama. She sat in the cold, wet sheets of her bed, staring at the wall straight across from her. Careful of the water, he knelt beside her bed and took one of her hands in his. "Sakura, look at me."

She turned to him, but her eyes were still lost. She was awake, but she wasn't aware that she was awake. It took her a few good minutes before she could finally blink her terror away, tears forming in the corners of her eyes as she gazed down at her soaked bed. The prickling sensation was both welcomed and unwanted.

"Care to fill me in?"

"A nightmare,"

"Try again."

Sakura turned to Shikamaru; a look of solemnity met her eyes, but she didn't say anything.

"Sakura, there was a faint violet glow surrounding you. I know I don't share closed quarters with you often, but the last I checked, you don't glow purple while you sleep."

Not looking all that thrilled by the information, Sakura shook her head. No, she didn't glow purple while she slept. However, telling him what happened... it left a squeamish feeling in the pit of her stomach. "I was dreaming of, of―" her hands started shaking. He still held one in his and when she tried to pull it out of his grip, he only tightened his hold. He wasn't letting her go. 'Shouldn't this make me feel safe? I feel sick.' She looked into Shikamaru's worried eyes, "y-you can let go. I'm going to take a shower..."

Sighing, Shikamaru realized that she wasn't going to tell him what happened. "Fine, shower, but then you're sitting down and explaining what happened."

Sakura placed her hand to the shower wall. Her body, despite the shock of cold water, had still been unimaginably hot from the nightmare she'd been having. Whatever it really was, she wasn't sure, but she couldn't deny that it had left her feeling both wanton and ashamed. Her hand trembled as she brought it down nervously between her legs. Closing her eyes, she fought off the sudden tremor that ran tantalizingly along her spine and the warmth that boiled uncomfortably in the pit of her belly. A sudden haze filled her vision as she trailed her middle finger along the nub of nerves.

KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK!

Jolting out of the feverish heat, she turned her eyes to the door.

"Sakura hurry up."

She pulled her fingers from where she'd been touching herself, eyeing the glazed nectar that laced her fingers. Her cheeks flushed, she washed her hands under the warm running water and tried to wash the rest of herself. Careful not to touch herself anymore than she had. She was desperate to pull herself from this lustful haze that she was finding herself being sucked into. 'Damn it! Sakura, what's wrong with you? This isn't like you at all. Just, clear your mind, you'll be fine.' Drying off, she dressed in the dry clothes that she'd had packed. It was the only outfit she had besides her normal medic uniform. However, since that was soaked, she'd have to wear this.

Nothing too conspicuously different. A red top that fell past her hips, and a pair of her white capris. She dried her hair as much as she could before stepping out of the bathroom and walking in to see Shikamaru sitting on his own bed but staring across the room at hers. It was soaked.

"Shikamaru?"

"Hm?" He looked back and took in her appearance. "Are you feeling better?"

"...yeah. I'll tell you about my dream now... before Naruto and Kakashi get here."

Naruto sighed, "are we still waiting for that Midoriko lady?"

Standing in the hall, Kakashi, Sakura, Shikamaru and Naruto were watching women come and go as they walked the halls. Kakashi was eyeing the hallway, and more specifically, Sakura who had been staring down the hallway nervously since they stepped out to wait for Kagura or even Kikyou.

"Excuse me, the Lady Midoriko is ready to see you all."

Turning, Sakura felt her eyes widen at the familiar woman. "...Kaguya?"

She turned a smile to the pinkette. "Yes, that is my name. Have we met before?"

"...no, I just..." she glanced at Shikamaru, "guessed."

"Well, that's quite the guess. Please, come this way." She led the along down the hall. Through a set of hard wood doors, to an alter where the Lady Midoriko was carefully wiping down the table.

"I'm sorry it's taken so long to speak with you. Considering these matters our of great importance, I know I shouldn't have put them off, even if only for the day. Take a seat." She motioned to the pews. Placing the fiber cotton rag down on the podium, she walked down the steps and leaned back against the wood railings for the ramp.

"Lady Midoriko, have you seen the purple fog within the Temple?"

Looking towards Sakura, she seemed confused by the question. "Inside the temple. Oh bless, no. We'd truly have no chance if even our temple was satiated in the mists poison. Why? Have you seen it inside the temple?"

"I―" she paused, then smiled, "no, I just wanted to make sure that there were no leaks inside that we should know about."

Nodding, Midoriko looked relieved to hear that. "You had me worried."

"We will be looking around the village today since it's light out. Do you have any idea of where the fog originated?" Kakashi asked, watching her carefully in case she gave way to deceit.

"I'm afraid not. It veiled itself across the village amid the night. We were asleep. When we first noticed the change in the village, we closed off our doors and I took to viewing the carnal behavior from afar. That's when I sent my letter to your Hokage. Honestly, I don't know if you will be able to help us, or if the Village Hidden in the Shadows is soon to fall, but I couldn't just give up. This village, in all its chaos, is my home. I ask that you take care of it. Save it. Please."

"...we will of course, do what we can."

Midoriko smiled and gave a small nod. "Before you go and scout the village, I'd like for Sakura here to come with me."

Shikamaru's head shot up at that, "you won't mind if I come along?"

Hesitant, Midoriko shook her head, "that's fine. I only wish for her to check up on Kagome. My successor to the Temple and the Rites of Purification."

'Kagome...'

The name seemed to reverberate throughout everyone's mind.

"Then, we'll wait for you both in the main hall."

"I ask that you wait in silence then. The girls are in their morning prayer, and distracting them will see them disciplined."

'...disciplined?' Sakura didn't ask. She really didn't want to know. Following Midoriko, she and Shikamaru took another hall than where they'd come from. It was like a maze indoors. Up a set of winding stairs, they walked the length to a single bedroom at the top of the stairs.

"I will be here the entire time. For safety reasons, I don't dare leave Kagome alone with a young man, even if you are there too, Sakura."

Sakura nodded while Shikamaru just rolled his eyes. This was nothing like her dream. She wasn't scared anymore. No, she was more curious than anything else. Watching as Midoriko opened the door, a dim light crawled along the circular room as Shikamaru and Sakura entered. A young woman was seated at her windowsill, draped in a white cotton dress and an Asian style robe. "Kagome?"

Shikamaru watched her turn to meet their gaze, her blue eyes were wide and innocent, anyone could see this. She'd never seen a drop of blood in her life. Something this pure, this untouched, he almost felt inclined to agree with Midoriko in her extremities when it came to Kagome's protection. Hell, he wouldn't trust himself alone with the girl either. 'There's something about her, that makes you want to either protect her, or corrupt her.' As he thought this, Shikamaru realized that his thoughts were a bit unstable and made a note to talk to Sakura about it once they got to their room later that night.

"...hi?"

"Kagome, these are the Shinobi who have come to help us rid the village of the Miasma."

"Oh?" Kagome stood and walked over to Sakura, smiling, she met her eyes. "Then, thank you. Until the Miasma is gone, I can't leave this room. Too much corruption has been brought down on the village, and the villagers are paying for it with their bodies and minds." She stepped over to her window and peered down at the village. "I pray every day that this evil disperses... but it's almost as if my prayers fuel this miasma and it's evil ways. Will there come an end to its immorality? You can save my village," she turned and locked her eyes with Sakura's, "right?" Moving her gaze past Sakura, she met Shikamaru's eyes in an unwavering staring contest.

"Kagome, you must take care not to carry such heavy burdens. Don't lay the blame of this fog at your feet. Now, lay yourself down, and let Sakura check you over. I want to be sure of your health until the day of your transcendence."

Kagome sat on the side of her bed and pulled her feet up on the mattress before lying down.

All the while Sakura checked Kagome's vitals, Shikamaru conversed with his inner thoughts. His eyes trailing over the outline of Kagome's body, the material leaving so little to his imagination, and yet, he continued to imagine just how she must feel beneath him. Tender, smooth, untouched... shivering beneath him, crying out.

"Shikamaru?"

He could practically hear the girl calling out his name.

"Shikamaru!"

An open palm found the backside of his head and he flinched at the sudden pain, "what the hell. I was thinking, what?"

"Tch, I'm done, let's go. Lady Midoriko needs to close the door?"

He glanced over at Kagome who was watching him curiously and then turned and left after Sakura who was eyeing him uncertainly. "Don't give me that look. I'm fine. I was seriously just lost in my thoughts."

"Goodness," Midoriko smiled, "if you aren't careful, you may not be able to find your way out of your thoughts."

Certainly, he considered just how dangerous his thoughts had become in such a short amount of time. They hadn't crossed through any of the Miasma, and he was already becoming enslaved to its poison. What would happen once they began scoping the village? "Tch, troublesome."
