~Chapter Five~

Kagome smiled as she relaxed into the dream world around her. "Naruto?" She called out but received no answer. Frowning, she looked around for the energetic blonde, but he was nowhere in sight. "Naruto?" Shaking her head when she realized he wasn't there yet. She sat down and looked at the colorful scene before her. She could hear a familiar whisper on the weightless wind and turned her eyes back over her shoulder as she took in the painful images of a war that often plagued her.

Normally, Naruto would be there to ward off the nightmares of her past terrors, but he wasn't there yet.

"K-Kagome...go...g-go!"

She stared down with a heavy heart at Sango, the beautiful demon slayer had caught a tentacle in the chest in order to protect her. Thrown aside by Naraku, she was knocked back into a tree where Kagome had run to, dropping to her knees and bringing her arms around the girls' slim waist. However, in this vision, Kagome hadn't yet bent down to reach out to her sister. She could only look on brokenly as Sango bled to death.

"D-don't cry...don't...d-don't..."

"..." Kagome brought a hand to her cheeks and frowned at the shine along her fingertips when she pulled back. "I wasn't even aware."

"Kagome?"

The scene froze and Sango's hand stilled midair as she'd been reaching out to Kagome. Turning around, Kagome watched as the world around her changed to a village overcome with fog and surrounded by the ocean. "...where?"

"My team and I made it to the Land of the Waves...thought, thought you could use a change in scenery." He eyed the spot behind her where the blood-soaked vision of Sango had long since faded from sight.

"How's the mission?"

Naruto shrugged, "not bad, not great. Kakashi-Sensei had to fight this assassin who was sent to kill our Mission."

"What is your mission?"

"It's an escort mission. However, a normal escort mission is ranked as a C-Rank mission. We recently learned that the Bridge Builder we are escorting has been keeping secrets. Kakashi-Sensei said that the mission is closer to an A-Rank now that we have a Rogue Shinobi to deal with."

"Rogue Shinobi?" Kagome let herself ease into the fog of village, walking around and looking at the modest homes and shabby ports. Settling on the ground next to Naruto, she brought her knees to her chest before giving him her undivided attention. "What is a Rogue Shinobi?"

"Rogue Shinobi have abandoned their villages, they carry their villages secrets and depending on their skill level, they can be pretty dangerous. This one, Zabuza...he's called the Demon of the Hidden Mist Village. He's a beast... Kakashi-Sensei wouldn't ever admit it, but he had trouble fighting him earlier."

"Fighting him? Wait, how did he have trouble?"

Naruto frowned, closing his eyes in thought, he grinned and opened his eyes to meet hers. "I'll show you!"

Sasuke heaved a breath as he looked around for Naruto. Sakura was inside getting to know the family they were staring with while Naruto had disappeared for some training alone. He'd been sent out to find him after it had gotten so dark out. "Hey, Loser!" he called out, not serious in the name calling, but hoping to get a rise from the blonde and in addition, some idea of where he was. When he heard no reply, a part of him grew worried and he sped up his steps. Finding Naruto didn't take much longer as he came to a clearing behind one of the shoddily made homes. "Tch...sleeping without a care in the world." He stepped up to Naruto and brought a hand to his shoulder, then...he stopped. He could wake him, but if he was with her.

When he'd heard about the dreams, yeah, he thought Naruto was crazy at first. However, the change in his personality, and his fighting style, it was present. There was also the topics of the dreams. That notebook of his was filled with all sorts of things Sasuke had never heard of. Yes, Naruto let him see the notebook, but only him. Sakura wasn't privileged to Naruto's dreams, and Kakashi hadn't been told either. In a way, Sasuke felt like it was his and Naruto's secret. He wanted to be the only one who knew of this secret world Naruto was in. Well, to be more exact, he was a bit jealous that Naruto could escape to this dream world with some girl from another plane of existence. He wanted to meet her too. If she could help Naruto...then...why not him?

Sitting down beside his...friend, he leaned his back against the tree that held Naruto in the upright position. Feeling the blonde's head loll against his shoulder, he considered brushing it off, but again, he let it go. Closing his eyes, he only intended to rest them while letting Naruto sleep a bit. He never intended to fall into a slumber of his own.

"Intense, right!? Sasuke and I were totally in sync too...you saw, didn't you?"

Kagome laughed, "it was pretty cool. Watching the way he caught you in weapon form and then seeing the two of you work together to free your Sensei from that water prison. That was the best part, I think."

"Naruto?"

"Sasuke!?"

Kagome and Naruto both looked surprised by the sudden intrusion. Not that they were discussing anything private, simply, neither of them had expected someone besides them to speak up. Kagome looked that boy over. He was Naruto's age, but looked to be ten times more emo in his brooding looks. She immediately recognized him from the transformation Jutsu's that Naruto used to show her his friends and Sensei. "So, this is the real Sasuke?"

"Yeah, yeah!" Naruto stood up and moved towards the confused Uchiha. "This is definitely him...I think. Sasuke, you're you, right?"

Sasuke sighed, "you know, if this is how you figure out whether someone in your dream is real or not, I might have to reconsider the validity of this, Kagome."

"oh, I'm famous?"

Shaking his head, he strolled past Naruto who followed him quickly, poking him curious in the arm to feel if he was real or not, Sasuke rolled his eyes before ignoring his antics. "I wouldn't say your famous. Only I know about you. Still..." his brow twitched as Naruto poked him again in the side. "Loser! How is poking me in your dream supposed to prove I'm not part of your dream!?"

"How am I supposed to know!? I'm not used to anyone besides myself and Kagome being able to reach this...this..." he looked over at Kagome for help.

"...in-between?"

"Yeah! This in-between! How did you get here anyways?"

"I don't know. I went out looking for you and found you asleep against a tree." Blushing, he turned his head away so that neither could see his cheeks take on a pink hue, "I considered waking you up, but then I thought you and Kagome might be talking and didn't want to interrupt. So, I sat down beside you and I guess...I don't know, I fell asleep." He knocked Naruto's hand aside before he could poke him again. "Stop it!"

"Naruto, I think this is the real Sasuke. I think he crossed into the "in-between" with us, because he's in direct contact with you. How interesting." She smiled, "you should experiment with this."

"What, you mean...like...sleep with Kakashi and Sakura, see if I can get the two of them to come here too?" He grinned, "Sakura..."

"Idiot, Sakura would knock your lights out before you could even touch her, and what reason would you and Kakashi-Sensei have to sleep together?"

"What was that? Who are you calling an Idiot!?"

"You obviously, Idiot."

Kagome sat back down and watched the two boys go back and forth. Painful memories stirred around her as voices began filtering around them.

"You know the saying, idiots never die!"

Naruto and Sasuke stopped arguing, looking around in confusion for the voice, but finding no one.

"Idiots? Think you'll get away with that?"

"What you wanna take me on now?!"

Kagome buried her head into her knees as she tightened her grip on her Hakama's. Her long black hair fell around her as her shoulders began shaking in the sudden hurt she felt.

"Today's the day...I'm gonna punch your lights out once and for all!"

"With that beat-up body of yours...not likely!"

"...Inuyasha…Kouga..." This time, despite this being one of the moments in their travels that she'd recalled fondly, tears fell without remorse from her eyes.

"Kagome..."

"...Kagome..."

Naruto moved with haste as he ran past Sasuke and knelt beside her, "Kagome, hey, are you alright?"

"I...yeah...you two just...you remind me of them."

"Them?"

"Inuyasha and Kouga, two of my friends. They died not long ago, but while they were alive, they were self-proclaimed rivals and close friends. They'd always argue and fight one another, insulting the other as they riled each other up with petty insults. Really though, they fought for one another...they were friends."

"Kagome, you never mentioned what happened in your past. Why not talk to us?"

She shook her head, "too soon...too many lost."

Nodding, he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug. Her balance was thrown and Sasuke watched her fall into his friend's arms as he calmed her heart. Thinking about it, maybe this was too much emotion for him. Closing his eyes, he could still hear their voices in his head. Yeah, he could hear the similarities in their arguing, but he and Naruto had calmed down a lot since he'd started having his dreams. "Hey...Kagome?"

Peering up over the arm that held her, Kagome acknowledged Sasuke.

"Could you...show me what...an Aurora Borealis is?"

She blinked, once, twice, then smiled and closed her eyes as she thought of the Aurora Borealis. The world around them shifted to precious clearing with a cool and serene river that babbled gently behind them. When she opened her eyes, she looked up into the sky where blues, reds, violets and greens danced in a silent rhythm. Moving to natures unheard melody. Sasuke followed her gaze and his closed fists fell loose at his side as his eyes widened at the lights above him. "...when the lights in the sky dance..."

Kagome laughed softly at that. "They appear in the colder regions. I'm sure, no matter where we live...lights like these stretch across time." She thought of the well and smiled. "Naruto...thank you."

Grinning, he shrugged as he looked up at the sky. "If you ever need to talk, I'm here. Sasuke too if he's up to a sleepover or two."

Saying nothing, Sasuke couldn't tear his eyes away from the moving lights. They were speaking. A language that he couldn't even hope to understand, was being spoken in the sky above him. "I will spend the rest of my life...looking for these lights."

"Sasuke! Naruto!"

"Sounds like Sakura has found you both,"

"Oh, Sasuke...wake up, you two will catch a cold!"

Standing with Naruto's help, she watched as Sasuke began to fade. He turned towards her and raised his hand before smirking, "you and Naruto take care of yourselves. I'll see you both again. I'm sure of it."

"Yeah, definitely. See you around, Kagome."

"Kagome!" Naruto yelled, "Don't you dare push their memories back! They're still here watching out for you, Believe It! From now on, move forward, and smile. Next time, you'll tell me about your friends...promise me."

A sad smile touched her lips as the sky began to shift into brighter colors around them, "...I..." she watched as he too began to fade, "...I promise. Next time, Naruto."

"Hehe! See ya!"

Kagome lifted her head from the leaves and raised her eyes to meet the God Tree. Pushing herself from the ground, she walked towards it and let her fingers graze the slit in the tree where an arrow so long ago had pierced. Smiling, she sighed and leaned forward so that her weight was distributed on the tree. "I'm sorry it took so long to say...goodbye...Inuyasha."

"Miko..."

"I'm okay, Sesshoumaru. I think..." she pushed herself from the tree and glanced back at the mighty Demon Lord, "I think I'm going to be okay. I can stumble forward now."

"What's changed?"

Walking towards the demon, she watched his hand reach up and pull a leaf from her hair. She caught the leaf in her hand when he let it drift freely from his fingers, "it's clear to me, that things have changed. I need to keep my eyes forward, and that means moving on...Believe It."

He raised a brow but didn't say anything about her strange way of speaking. Instead, he formed a cloud and helped her take her first step forward. "Everything changes...you can only do what's good for you, Miko."

She raised her hand and took his as she left her doubts behind her and let her Lord take her back to the Crescent Moon Palace.
