~Chapter Seven~

Completely exhausted, Kakashi withheld a yawn as he fell backward onto his couch. He was relaxing for what seemed like the first time since they got back from the land of Waves. Somehow, the mission had turned out well. There were no problems. 'There were no problems. How did we pull it off without any injuries? Sasuke and Naruto... really pulled through in the end.'

Now with the start of the Chuunin Exams, he would be able to see just how much they'd grown. Between now and the finals. Yeah, he did not doubt that they would make it to the end. It was how they'd make it. That's what he wanted to know.

"Don't be such a loser; it's not like this will be difficult for us. At least, I know I'll make it to the end."

"Why are you like this? I mean, I get it...you are most likely the best among the rookie nine, but geez, save some confidence for the rest of us!"

"Coming from you, loser?"

Naruto grinned, throwing an arm over Sasuke's shoulder, he leaned in, "remember, Kagome said that we would succeed in anything if we did it together. Remember, remember?"

Blushing, Sasuke pushed the arm from his shoulders, "Yeah, yeah, I remember. Hey, are you staying over at my place, or did you want me to come by yours tonight?"

"Eh?!"

Stopping, the two turned to see team InoShikaCho standing behind them, Ino mid-run, as it looked as if she'd been ready to pounce on Sasuke from behind.

"When the hell did you two get so close?" Shikamaru asked, pushing his hands in his pockets while leaning back a bit, "last time we saw you guys, I was certain the two of you hated one another."

"We're on the same team now. Neither one of us will make it far if we can't communicate and trust in the other."

"...true." None of what they said changed the dubious look on Shikamaru's face. The explanation from Naruto only made him more suspicious.

"S-Sasuke! You're going to enter the Chuunin Exams, right!?"

"Obviously. Naruto and I will annihilate anyone who gets in our way. Be forewarned, as that means you too."

"Gee...thanks. Good to know we've all got each other's backs." Eyeing the two, he raised a brow, "Hey, I get that the two of you are closer now, but even still...when did the two of you start staying at one another's place?"

"Oh, Sasuke, can I stay over at your place?! I'm sure I'd be much better company then Naruto." Ino laughed, though mostly joking. Her parents would never let her stay the night at a guy's house. It didn't matter if they were teammates unless it was a mission, no way!

"Hm, I'm not interested in sharing my private life with anyone else. Naruto is already one too many; anyone else is just a pain."

The grinning fool. Naruto laughed and waved Ino's glare off, "sorry, Ino. There's only one spot available on Sasuke's right, and I got it first."

"And his left?"

Sasuke sighed, "belongs to Sakura. Now, if you're done interrogating us, we'll see you at the exams. Let's go, Naruto."

"Hai!"

'I don't care what those two say, that wasn't normal.' For the most part, Shikamaru was ignoring Ino, who hadn't stopped complaining about Naruto since they got to the Bar-B-Q eatery. Azuma was across from them, trying to slow Chouji down so that he didn't eat him out of pocket. Then there was him. Shikamaru couldn't get over it.

"Hey, are you staying over at my place,
or did you want me to come by yours tonight?"

Coming from Sasuke, that had been borderline boyfriend material. It was gold! How, and when did that relationship grow?! No, no way. He knew those two, and while they didn't hate one another, per se, they'd never been that close. 'Now that I think about it, they could have easily been this close from the start if they'd "communicated" better. Both are alone. Naruto was raised without a family, while Sasuke's was taken from him early on. It makes sense. If only I could figure out how they got to this outcome.' Twiddling his thumb in thought, he laced his fingers together as he tried to solve this somewhat unfathomable equation.

"Why are you thinking about this so hard, Shikamaru?"

'Hmn?' Looking up, he watched Chouji swallow the food in his mouth, "what do you mean? Isn't it peculiar?"

"Not really. Missions bring teammates closer together. You know, whatever happened on their last mission, most have redefined their friendship. It only takes one moment."

Ino and Shikamaru both looked at Chouji, thoughtful to what he'd said, Azuma seemed confused but didn't argue the facts. "True," he sighed, "I guess I'm just overthinking things. Whatever happened, it's between Sasuke and Naruto, huh?"

"Ah! Scoot over. You don't need to be right on top of me!"

Naruto laughed, "don't push; I was trying to grab my pillow." Reaching over Sasuke, he pulled the pillow from beside the Uchiha, placing it back behind his head. He sighed and relaxed into the fluff. "Isn't it strange, how I'm the only connection to Kagome and this other...place?"

"Yeah... I don't know why it's you. Maybe your chakra or something is connected to hers."

Yawning, Naruto rolled over a bit. His hand settled between him and Sasuke. "I guess. Someone must know about stuff like this. It couldn't be the first time, right?"

'Dream walking, or something? Maybe it's a type of Kekkai Genkai. Naruto grew up without knowing his parents, so he wouldn't know if he has one.' Jumping at the feel of Naruto's hand sliding into his, Sasuke turned a bit onto his side and looked the blonde over. He was becoming attached. So was Naruto. At this rate, even the thought of someone hurting the other would bare their consequences. Thinking back to the fight with Haku, he and Naruto had double-teamed the snow Shinobi, but fighting someone that you had respect for...yeah.

Both he and Naruto had run into the kid. Having spent all their time together in the Land of Waves. They had even been together when they met Haku. Though, both thought that he was a she. Sasuke had his doubts, but he wasn't about to throw a kunai and find out he was wrong. Now that he thought about it, maybe Naruto also had his suspicions.

The fight that had transpired on the bridge had taken them both by surprise. When Naruto had protected him, thrown himself in front of the onslaught of senbon, he'd deflected them all with this malicious red chakra. Everything about Naruto, at that moment, screamed Beast, and yet, Sasuke wasn't afraid. He'd never felt safer. Naruto, this wild blonde, had been the same boy who'd made a fool out of himself in classes just for attention. Then he went home and worked hard every day, all by himself. He struggled to be as good as he was now. This boy, he wasn't the type to hurt someone he cared about. That was why he could trust him so easily. Because he knew Naruto, he knew he cared about him too. Sasuke too...he cared about Naruto. This loud, rambunctious blonde had become more than just his teammate; he'd become his friend.

An irreplaceable friend.

Sasuke's eyes closed and he drifted off to sleep, following Naruto into the world of Dreams. They had started training there too. After all, if it were them, they could do anything. Learning Jutsu while you're asleep? Sure, why not? Like Kagome said. As long as they did it together, there was nothing they couldn't do.
