Hey everyone! I'm back for part 2! If you haven't already, make sure to go read part 1, because this will make absolutely no sense at all if you don't. Please know I will be doing my best to put up chapters as fast as possible, but realistically, it might be a while until you see me on here again. I will definitely see you in December, so keep an eye out then!
Thank you to NaoSa for the inspiration behind this prompt, I hope you guys enjoy!
With a rush of pain and cold wind, Kendra was back in her body, holding the King's hands, one pressed to the surface of the shield. As she began to come to, indescribable pain overwhelmed her, heat seeming to sear throughout her entire body.
"Hold on!" The King shouted from beside her, his voice tight with pain. And so she did, managing to crack her eyes open enough to see the shield. The splotches of darkness were disappearing, light leaking into them and restoring the magic. After another agonizing moment of shaking and groaning, suddenly, the pain disappeared as did the magic. The King dropped her hand, and Kendra fell hard. In an instant, Gilgarol was beside her, demanding answers.
"What happened?" His hard voice was insistent and tense. Now that the pain was gone, and Kendra could actually move, she used the table to pull herself up. Crouched on the ground next to the table was the King, breathing hard, and Kendra felt her heart lift. They had escaped. Kendra knelt beside him, touching his shoulder. He looked up, and something bright and full of joy filled him.
"You were right." The King was suddenly laughing, and he grabbed her in a hug. "You were right!"
And then, inexplicably, she and the King of the Fairies were rocking on the ground, hugging and laughing and crying.
"Your Majesty?" Gilgarol's shocked emotional moment broke them apart. The King looked up, and he smiled at the captain.
"Gilgarol." Those words were all it took to send the captain, as well as Faro crashing to their knees.
"My King." Gilgarol uttered, a tear dripping onto the floor. The King smiled, and as he stood slowly, Kendra felt her heart clench at how happy Bracken would be if he was here.
The King made his way over to Gilgarol and Faro, taking each of their hands. "Thank you. Please stand and greet me like the friends we are." And so, each man got to their feet, and hugged the King, who now carried himself with confidence and joy. Kendra wondered how long it would be until the trauma of his past would catch up to him. To give them a moment, she slipped out of the room to the hallway where a set of astrids stood guard. They stood at attention as she approached, bowing to her.
"What is the situation outside? Have the wards been restored?" Kendra asked quietly.
"Yes Princess, the wards are strong once more, though our scouts have seen a group of demons marching towards us." One of the men answered. "What are our orders?"
Kendra bit her lip. She didn't want to publicize the reappearance of the King, and she still needed to get him to safety, though perhaps there was another way. "Would I be correct in assuming the demons are coming for the King?"
The astrids exchanged glances. "That would be a fair assumption to make."
"Do we have the means to defend the castle from an attack?"
"The wards are strong, though the demons are as well. If need be, I am sure we could put up a valiant fight."
Kendra glanced down the hallway. "Alright, you two. What are your names?" She had to admit that she didn't know all of the astrids personally, though she was aware that those at the castle were the most trusted of all of the guardsmen.
"Genwin and Koanok, Princess." The man on the right replied, gesturing first at himself then his companion.
"Okay, what I'm about to tell the two of you, you will not tell anyone else until you are personally authorized by me to do so. Am I understood?"
The two men looked grave, and a little intimidated. "Yes Your Majesty." They responded together.
"Good. Now listen very closely."
"Gilgarol, Faro would you two give us a moment?" Kendra slipped back into the room, interrupting the men as they talked loudly. The King looked over at her curiously, though he gave no objection.
The Captain and the old man nodded, seeming confused, but obeyed her order without question.
"Tell no one of the King's return. Find Genwin and Koanok, they'll fill you in." Kendra mentioned to them quietly as they left the room.
"Fill us in on what?" Faro asked.
Kendra gave a thin smile. "Our plan." She dismissed them with a nod, and they left without another word.
Kendra turned back to the King who waited with a slight, grim smile on his face. "I take it that there will be no celebration tonight?"
She shook her head. "I'm afraid not. Your Majesty, restoring the shields was our main goal. Getting you back was an unprecedented success. But the fact still remains that the fairy kingdom is under attack, and the demons are coming for you. There is a reason why the Queen and your children aren't here."
The King nodded. "I remember. I feel memories of that place coming back." His eyes were sad, but focused and alert. "I know you have a plan. Tell me."
Kendra hesitated, unsure of how to proceed. As soon as they had gotten back, she had resumed command, though now, the King was the highest available authority. The man's eyes softened a little. "My wife placed you in charge for a reason, and though I don't know you well Kendra, I can tell that you are the best leader for our people right now. There will be time for formalities later. Now, we need to save our people, and I need to see my family again."
She gave a little smile. "Thank you Your Majesty." With that, Kendra jumped into explaining her plan to the King who gave encouraging nods every now and then. At the end of her explanation, Genwin's voice entered her mind, telling her that everything was ready for them.
"It's time. Can you do this?" Kendra asked the King. Despite everything, he smiled, eyes twinkling, and for a moment she could see Bracken's face reflected in the King's.
"I've been doing more than enough relaxing lately. I'm ready."
"Your Majesty?" Gilgarol asked as Kendra placed her hands on the horse's back, about to vault up onto it's back. The King was in the stall over, getting up onto his own horse. Both she and the King had outfitted themselves for a fight, as well as a long journey. The King sat proudly on the back of his horse, looking every inch the King he is, and nothing like the man who had sat dazed and confused for the past four years.
"Yes?" She replied, pausing to look at the astrid captain. The man looked tired and ashamed, though for what she didn't know.
"I need to apologize."
"Apologize?" Kendra repeated, fully turning back to the man.
Gilgarol nodded. "For questioning your judgement earlier. It wasn't my place to do so. I was…" The man tilted his head, seeming conflicted. "I let my emotions cloud my judgement. You didn't, and I mistook that as apathy, rather than for the selflessness it was."
Kendra smiled, placing her hand on top of Gilgarol's. "You have nothing to apologize for. I value your opinion, even when it disagrees with mine."
Gilgarol gave the barest of smiles, though for him, it was the equivalent of a beaming grin. As the wind and storms raged outside, Kendra readied herself for the risks they were about to take. Gilgarol helped her onto her horses' back and followed her and the King outside.
In the outer stables, a simple cart pulled by a team of horses was surrounded by four astrids, two more sitting in the cart. Genwin and Koanok had, as ordered, gotten a recovering fairy to spell their appearances. Both men now looked like Kendra and the King, wrapped in blankets and huddled in the cart.
The King's horse trotted up beside hers as Kendra prepared to give what might possibly be her final orders. "Are you ready?" He asked.
Kendra took another breath and nodded. Even if she wasn't, she had no choice but to be ready for whatever was to come. She urged her horse forward and spoke out loud to all in the vicinity. "Your orders are to ride for the Queen's encampment. Expect an attack. Expect it to be vicious and deadly. Your main objective is to stall for as long as possible to give the King and I as much time as possible to get to Wyrmroost. We'll send word when we cross through, once we're there, I want three of you to continue on to the encampment and try to find out what happened to the Queen, the Princesses and the Prince. The rest of you will come back here to defend the castle. Once the King and I near the portal for Wyrmroost, it should draw the demons away from the castle to us. If we're lucky, we'll be able to slip through to the other world to bring as many reinforcements as possible." Kendra surveyed the solemn faces of the warriors around her. "This is your kingdom. Fight for it with everything you have. Do as the Queen and her family have done for all of us, and never give up. Stick together, hold on to each other and never surrender. We will bring help, or die trying." Kendra shouted. "On the count of three, we head off."
She looked back at the King who nodded firmly, readying the reins in his hands. "One." Kendra looked down to Gilgarol who took over the countdown. "Two!" the captain cried.
"THREE!" In a burst of wind and cold, the horses were running, and the groups separated, Kendra and the King riding in one direction and the astrids riding in the other.
Kendra held on tight to her horse as it galloped towards the mountains, following the King closely. The portal was not far away, though to avoid the rapidly approaching demons, they had to ride all the way around the other side of the castle and village. Above them, the storm raged loudly and violently, lightning cracking and thunder rolling. It was made worse by the swirling dark clouds that demons used to pollute the realm. As the rain fell, the grass and plants died on impact. Kendra steeled herself, trying to draw on the confidence of her brother, who always forged ahead proudly and with unyielding determination. The horses, magically enhanced Louvians did not tire, even as they drew farther and farther from the castle at a full gallop.
Kendra, wait. The King's voice spoke in her mind, and she began to pull her horse down to a trot to catch up with the King's horse.
What's wrong? Kendra replied, trying to not let her mind get ahead of her. There had been no attacks yet, and it seemed their plan was working.
Look. The King pointed behind them, back towards the castle. In the distance, Kendra could spot what looked like ink stains splattering onto the forcefield that surrounded the castle.
"What the hell?" Kendra muttered to herself, pulling her horse around.
"They're trying to leach the energy of the shields." The King answered, sounding disappointed but unsurprised.
Kendra looked at him. "Will it work?"
The man nodded sadly. "It will take a while, but yes. We need to hurry." The King nudged his horse into a trot away from the castle. She followed, trying to control her rising panic.
"What is that stuff?" She asked quietly, keeping an eye on the landscape surrounding them.
The King sighed. "We always called it the black tar. It was used against us in the first war." He sounded so downtrodden, Kendra almost didn't want to question him further, but she needed to know.
"What does it do?"
"It often acts as a sort of habitat for sludge demons." The man answered as the horses began to wind their way back to the mountains. "It seems harmless, but the potency of dark magic inside the tar can eat away at anything given enough time. It uses our magic against us, in a sense. The interaction of the dark and light creates energy buildup until it ultimately rips apart the magic itself." Kendra had a sudden memory of Broadhoof and how her light magic and the dark of the shadow plague had ripped him apart. Her heart panged and she had to resist looking back. Better to look forward, at least for now.
"How do you know that?"
The King looked over at her, a slight grin on his face. "Believe it or not, once upon a time I was the leader of our military strategy against Gorgrog."
"Really?" She tried not to sound surprised, but it was difficult considering that she had only ever known the King while he was in catatonic state.
But the King didn't seem to take offense. "Indeed. At least until that final night… and well, we both know how that went."
She digested this new information, wondering how she had never known this about the King, and why no one had ever told her. Then again, pain had a way of chasing away fond memories of a person.
"Is that really so surprising to you?" The King wondered quietly.
Kendra debated for a moment on whether or not she should tell the King the truth. It would certainly dishearten him, but she supposed the King deserved to know. "A little. Bracken's told me about what he remembers about you, so have your other children and the Queen, but…"
"What?" The King pressed.
"It's just… in all the time I've known you, you've been catatonic. Functional enough to walk and eat and complete your basic needs, but there was… nothing behind your eyes. Seeing you like this is new." Kendra admitted.
The King nodded, sadness settling in his features. "You know, I don't remember much from that place. I remember you coming for me, and I remember being alone, for a long time but beyond that... It's a blur. Maybe that is for the better, a way that my mind protects me from the pain."
"Do you remember being taken? Or being freed?"
"Freed no. Taken, yes. I remember it clear as day. It was a terrible day…" The King trailed off. "Tell me, Kendra, how is it that you have come to be here? How have you become fairykind?" He was changing the subject, but she let it slide. Who was she to dissect the King's trauma?
"It's a long, long story."
The King hummed. "I assume so. Though it must be an extraordinary story, for an extraordinary individual."
Kendra blushed. "It's certainly a strange story."
The King cast a glance behind them, his face darkening. "I never imagined this realm would fall victim to attack."
"No one did." She replied. "But Ronodin is…"
"Cunning." The King finished. "He always was, even when I knew him." His eyes grew stormy, settling his eyes on the horizon.
It seemed, at least for now, the conversation was over. Their horses continued their steady canter through the darkened valley of the fairy realm. They just had to get to the other side of the mountains, and then the King would be safe. And Kendra could go look for the missing royal family. She could go look for Bracken. And though she hadn't told the King her plan, she had a feeling he would insist on going with her. But the truth was, that the King's life was far more important than hers. Once the King entered the walls of Blackwell Keep, he would be beyond the demon's reach. Hopefully, it would be enough, at least until they could get the Queen back in power.
Soon enough, they came out around the mountains and to the grove of trees that acted as the portal to the fairy shrine. Kendra pulled her horse to a stop, gesturing for the King to do the same.
"The middle of that grove of trees will take us right to the shrine at Wyrmroost. According to Gilgarol, Agad and his brother Camarat should be waiting for us." Kendra murmured, sliding her bow off her back and loading an arrow into it from her quiver. She slid down from her horse, the King following her lead. Their steeds then took off into the night, as they had been ordered to do.
"Lead the way." The King invited, keeping his voice low as well. The King had picked a short sword as his weapon but had also admitted he was out of practice with fighting.
Slowly, and nearly silently, Kendra and the King picked their way through the grove of trees, creeping along as quietly as possible. There was no telling if the demons were nearby, or if Kendra's plan had worked in drawing the demons away from them.
"Wait." A hand on her arm made Kendra back up a few paces. The King was staring into the darkness. He didn't say a thing but simply raised his arm, pointing to a tree a few yards away from them.
"Watch out behind us." She raised her bow, taking aim, having seen the flashes of movement behind the tree. As soon as her shot was clear, sure that she was going to hit something, she released the arrow. It was then Kendra realized her mistake. Whatever was in the trees was going to blow their cover. And sure enough, her arrow hit it's mark. A demon dripping with black sludge stumbled out from behind the tree, an arrow in it's eye, bellowing in pain.
"Kendra!" The King grabbed her, yanking her sideways through the grove, taking them away from the portal, but she had a hard time caring about that, as she could see out of the corner of her eye that several disgusting demons were tearing through the woods, chasing them. Kendra and the King ran as fast as they could. She could hear the King wheezing beside her, but it was either they ran or they died, and so they kept going. As they broke the treeline, Kendra pulled the King around to face her.
"Listen to me," Kendra gasped. "I'm going to distract the demons and get them as far away from here as possible. You need to get back to the grove and get to Wrymroost. There's a statue on the ground. Pick it up and think of Wrymroost, and it'll take you right there!" She rushed out, not letting the King reply.
"You have to come too." The King insisted, his beautiful eyes flicking over her face frantically.
"No, no." Kendra shook her head. "You have to go. Without you, the entire realm dies. We just got you back, we can't lose you again."
"And we can't lose you either!" The King insisted. "You told me that my son loves you and that you love him. You can't do this to him."
Kendra forced a smile onto her face. It was the least she could do. "There's no other way. And this is bigger than either one of us. Bracken knows me, and if something happens, he'll mourn, but he will understand what I did and why." She cast a glance into the trees that were beginning to ruffle. "Go back around the way we came. You're our only hope now."
Though the King was still protesting, Kendra released him and pulled an arrow from her quiver. She took aim right into the trees, waiting for the demons to breakthrough. "Go! Before they come."
"Kendra…" The King sounded strangled, and she glanced at him. He was beginning to back away, pain written all over his face. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be." She summoned what was left of her courage and focused on the trees once more. "I don't plan on going out without a fight."
Distantly, Kendra heard the King turn and run, but all her attention was on the demons that broke through the trees, roaring in anger. There were more of them than she had anticipated, but she could only hope that they had drawn enough of them out that the King would have a clear path through to the portal.
Kendra released arrow after arrow, more thankful than she had ever been to Trask, who had taught her to fire her bow and hit her target every time. Her arrows landed the hearts and throats of the demons, both places that ensured an immediate death, but for everyone she took down, more were coming. It was a swarm, of over thirty demons advancing towards her. They weren't fast, but they were vicious and snarling and tough, so much so that eventually, even the magical arrows that replaced themselves in her quiver weren't enough.
So desperately, throwing aside her bow, she drew Bracken's horn out of her belt, changing it into a sword, and began cutting through the demons, barely evading their swiping claws and dripping sludge. She barely had time to think, much less time to be afraid. It was a swarm of them, and she was losing. As one of them swiped her in the back, claws ripping open her skin, she nearly fell but forced herself to stay upright, but even as she backed away from the demons, they were still coming. Her vision was beginning to blur, and as she took another demon down, the dizziness became too much for her. Kendra fell backward, blindly swinging her sword, hoping to keep the demons off of her. But as a demon knocked her sword from her hand, Kendra knew the fight was over. She had lost. Hopefully, she had given the King enough time to get away. Hopefully, her death was going to mean something.
One of the demons, the one she had shot in the eye, loomed over her, her arrow still lodged in it's head. The teeth bared, and Kendra closed her eyes, not wanting to see the thing rip her throat out.
But the blow never came, and her eyes cracked open slightly. The other demons were hissing, backing away from her, and the one looming above her was frozen, nothing at all in its eyes. There was a sword in its chest, a shining silver sword that she recognized. Allowing herself to slump backwards, Kendra distantly registered someone dispatching the rest of the demons.
But for Kendra, she was already fading away, the pain in her back dimming to a dull ache, the world fuzzing out, going dark, until...
Something cold pressed against the gashes on her back, jerking her awake as the pain made her suddenly alert. There was someone beside her, and they were holding her tightly. It took a moment to register, who it was, but as the world began to return to normal, the pain present but not overwhelming, the exhaustion beginning to abate, Kendra saw his face. Bracken's face. Bracken was with her.
A determined, grim look on his face betrayed the worry she knew he felt. "Bracken?" Kendra gasped. "What happened?"
Bracken's eyes settled on hers, shifting so that she was leaning against his chest. She felt his hand holding what she could now identify as his horn at her back, the gashes still throbbing, but no longer overwhelming. "There was an attack on our forces. Ronodin placed a spell on us that prevented us from reaching anyone until he was defeated."
"Is he gone now? Defeated?" Kendra gritted out the question through her teeth, the pain now coming in waves.
Bracken shook his head. "He has been driven out of the fairy kingdom. His forces have not, and he still remains at large."
As Bracken spoke, everything came rushing back to Kendra. "The King! Your father! We need to help him!" She sat up, and as soon as she pulled away from Bracken, the pain in her back returned, but she shoved it out of her mind.
Bracken's jaw set. "Kendra… he's not here. If he's not with you, that means he's dead." The words were firm and deadpanned.
"No! No, Bracken, help me up." Kendra ignored his protests, using his shoulder to push herself to her feet.
"Kendra it's not your…"
"No!" Kendra snatched up the sword and bow she dropped, along with her quiver, the arrows finally having returned to it. "There's still time, come on!"
She led the way into the grove of trees, barreling towards the center, Bracken hustling alongside her. As they ran, Kendra tried to explain. "Bracken, your father is awake! He's alright, and we need to help him!"
Bracken stopped, shock overcoming him. "Awake?"
Kendra reached back, grabbing his arm, forcing him to keep going. "It's a long story, come on!"
Apparently tired of protesting, Bracken followed her without another word. Each step took them further into the grove, though each step got harder and harder, the pain in her side coming back with a vengeance. Though Bracken had managed to stop some of the bleeding, the newly healed wounds were slowly ripping open again. Blood ran down her back, and though she felt herself blacking out, her adrenaline was too high to let her stop.
It took much longer, too long, to reach the portal for Wrymroost, though, as it turned out, they were just in time. The King was alive, and was fighting a set of demons that were keeping him away from the shrine. Beside Kendra, Bracken yelled, taking in his father with wide eyes. He sprinted to his father, pushing aside the demons he fought, slicing one with his sword, and shoving back the other.
The King saw his son, also shouting in relief. Bracken leaped in his father's arms, both of them crying, asking each other senseless questions. Kendra stayed back, away from their reunion, dispatching the demons Bracken had disabled and kept an eye out for any surprise attacks, but for now, she let the father and son have their moment.
"My son." The King whispered, pulling back and staring Bracken in the face. "My son… my son…" Tears ran down his face, matching the ones on his son's cheeks.
"Father? Is that you, is that really you?" Bracken sounded younger than Kendra had ever heard him be. In that moment, Bracken was not a prince, nor a hardened leader, but a little boy who got his father back. Kendra's heart clenched as she watched them together. She remembered how the King had come with her, how he'd trusted her because of Bracken. It was because of love. Her love for Bracken, the King's love for his family, and Bracken's love for Kendra.
"How… how, did this happen?" Bracken took a deep breath, still clenching his father's arms.
The King smiled, wide and wonderful. "Why don't you ask Kendra? She is, after all, the reason we are all still here."
Bracken turned slowly to Kendra, unexplainable joy in his eyes. "What did you do? How did you…?"
Kendra grinned, shifting towards them a little. "I trusted. I trusted that our love was strong enough to break even the strongest of curses and lead us home, even when we were lost."
Bracken took a few steps towards her, utter and complete awe written all over his face. "You, Kendra Sorenson, are outstanding." He began to laugh, cupping her face in his hands. "You are… exceptional. Extraordinary." He wrapped his arms around her, lifting her into the air, and though it hurt, she kept quiet, not wanting to stomp on his joy. As he set her down, a crazy idea bloomed in her mind.
"Bracken? Remember when I said I'd let you know about the proposal?"
His eyes narrowed. "Yes…?"
Kendra smiled at him, casting a quick glance to the King, who nodded encouragingly. "The answer is yes. The answer was always yes. I was just afraid to say it."
He stepped back, seeming completely shocked. "You mean…?"
She laughed out loud, "Yes Bracken! I will marry you!" The declaration triggered another hug and as Bracken pressed his lips against hers, her joy was so incredible that she barely felt her injuries. And barely a moment later, the Queen and her daughters broke through the treeline.
"Father?!"
As it turned out, the repeated stress on her injuries, though they were partially healed, still rendered Kendra unable to stand for much longer, and because she refused to be carried, Bracken had helped her limp back to the horses that had come back after they had called for them. Kendra leaned against Bracken as they rode back to the castle, his arms wrapped around her waist, the sun beginning to peak out from behind the horizon. The night had ended, as did the battles. Demons still ran amuck, but from what Kendra had heard, they were being hunted down. Lacking a leader, and no longer having control over the realm, the demons, at least for now, had lost.
The King and the Queen rode back together too, talking quietly, both smiling. Kendra had never seen the Queen happier than she was now, nor Bracken's sisters. Their family was back together, after so many years apart and Kendra could only imagine how good that felt.
The ride was long and painful, but her injuries were soon taken care of by the healers in the castle. Their arrival had warranted an impromptu parade in the streets, and as Kendra watched Bracken's eyes sparkle, his sisters gushing over the ring that now sat proudly on her finger, the past weeks felt almost worth it. She couldn't wait to tell her family.
"Kendra?" The Queen's quiet voice interrupted her thoughts, and turning back, the King and Queen were waiting, hand in hand.
"Yes, your majesty?" Kendra replied, stepping over to them.
"If you are able, we'd like to speak to you." It was at that moment that Kendra remembered that no matter the outcome, all of this had started because Kendra had disobeyed the Queen's direct orders. Swallowing her sudden nerves, she nodded, letting herself be led away from the festivities.
The Queen chose a room at random, a nice parlor overlooking a garden, inviting Kendra to sit, which she was glad of. Her body still ached, though not as much as it did only a few hours beforehand.
The King and Queen took a seat across from her. Though the King's eyes were sparkling, the Queen looked stern.
"Kendra. You disobeyed me. I ordered you to leave this realm with the King, and you did not. You assumed command, and gave your own orders." It wasn't a question, but Kendra still felt compelled to respond.
"Yes, I did." She figured it was better to be honest, because at this point, there was no hiding what she had done. "The situation had changed, and I wasn't willing to accept the possibility of sacrificing people for the sake of following orders."
The Queen tilted her head. "You judge my orders to be unwise?"
Feeling as though she was now treading on very thin ice, Kendra shook her head. "Not unwise. Just… desperate."
"It was a desperate situation."
"It was," Kendra agreed. "I couldn't reach you, our defenses were failing, and I had a choice to make. I chose to save as many people as possible, and I trusted that if you or the King had to make that choice, you'd understand what I did."
The Queen regarded her silently, seeming to stare into Kendra's soul. "You disobeyed me. Yet," the woman looked over at her husband who winked at Kendra. "I couldn't be more proud of you Kendra Sorenson."
The Queen's face broke into a smile. "I had lost hope that I would be able to save my family and my people. I feared that all was lost. You have proven me wrong."
The Queen stood, crossing to kneel next to Kendra. "I said this once before, but I will say it again. You have my eternal gratitude, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have you as a daughter."
Kendra's heart swelled, and as the Queen hugged Kendra, the King soon following suit, she couldn't help but to cry. When they headed back out to the parade, and the people of the kingdom cheered for her, and Bracken wrapped his arms around her, kissing her on the head softly, she knew, without a doubt, that she had been right to trust in love.
There was no telling what the next day would bring, but for now, for this beautiful, blissful moment, was nothing short of perfection. It had been love that had guided her to the King, and then back to Bracken and the others, and now, it was love that they celebrated, love that had carried them all back home.
