After collecting equipment and a vehicle, an old beat up truck that Darren affectionately called Ol' Ellie, the pair were on the road. At the look David gave him he'd explained this truck was his own, he'd owned it long before the club when he'd first come off the farm. That had been a little surprising but then it would seem this character was one who liked surprising people. It was a quiet ride once they got out of the city, they had a long ways to go and avoiding coven hideouts seemed to be working for them so far. David sat behind the wheel, lost in thought as he planned their route.
"Where will we go next?"
Glancing over at her briefly David watched her pale face as the moon shone down on her. He had to remind himself he was driving and turned his eyes away, "The coven is too far away to reach in a single day. There's a jet waiting but who knows if that's a safe route."
Without looking at him Eve spoke, "So we drive."
"That will take three times as long but may be the safer option," he said though it wasn't exactly safety he was thinking about. He was thinking it was 3 days of time alone with her instead of being surrounded by the coven. Of course it was a little manipulative but he wasn't sure he felt bad about it.
After a moment of thought Eve nodded her head, "That does seem to be the best option then. Perhaps coming for me wasn't a very good idea after all."
David had to admit, he had probably brought this trouble to her but he had various reasons for bringing her out of hiding. "Would you prefer to go back to hiding?" Heaven help him if she said yes.
Again she thought about that for a moment, a moment longer than he would have preferred but he was silently waiting. Eve finally shook her head, "No. While I have learned a good deal from humans I don't fit in well with them. It has been... difficult. Perhaps my own kind... or at least similar kind will be different."
He had no doubt it would be different for her to say the least. There was no one like Eve. Selene was something all her own as well and while David had been saved by Selene's blood he was still mostly vampire. He couldn't imagine how difficult it must have been for Eve to be thrust into the world on her own suddenly. He'd kept in touch with her but he hadn't been there with her.
"Would traveling during the day not be smarter? Most immortal kinds stick to the night, we however don't have that restriction," she said as she glanced across the truck cab at her companion. Eve watched his profile as he nodded his head in agreement.
Turning her eyes back to the window, trees passing more frequently as they left the city behind. Only that morning she'd been considering what another dull day it was going to be and now here she was with David of all beings. While they had been attacked she had to admit it was preferable. Since separating from her mother and David, Eve had experienced more than a few days that were dull. At first she hadn't minded because she was getting used to the world in general but that had only lasted so long.
"Do you ever find your life being... dull?"
Surprised David glanced over at her for a moment, "On occasion but the coven has kept me busy."
She considered that and then shrugged a little, "Life as a human was dull. There was work but even that was not enough to keep me from being bored."
David smiled, "I can only imagine. You went from fighting off the Lycans who imprisoned you to wiping down a bar surrounded by mortals. That's a pretty vast change in pace."
The barest of grins curved the corner for Eve's mouth as she nodded her head, "I will say, humans like to write everything they do down. I spent a large portion of my time reading books from the library."
"We do that as well, we have many books on our history," he said as he took an exit to take them further out of the city. Glancing over at Eve he smiled, "You are welcome to spend as much time in the archives as you like. I'm sure there's more than a few forgotten tomes."
A genuine smile spread across her face as he glanced over again, "I would like that. While watching interactions has been my focus lately, reading is much easier to follow. Humans at least, are so messy with their interactions."
"You may discover the Coven is no different. There are a lot of plots going on. You can not trust anyone to be completely level, there is almost always an ulterior motive beneath the surface," he said honestly.
For a moment Eve thought about that and then tipped her head as she looked over at David, "Why? Are beings not capable of being honest?"
He had to shrug, "I believe it's from centuries of living in hiding, of keeping who we are hidden, and the politics of our world. Everyone is looking for a step up, to be better or get more for themselves. Mind you not all are that way, the ones I chose as my counsel are those I believe to be honest and have the same ideals I have."
Eve listened to him quietly, thinking it all through. She knew humans were similar and of course Lycans were very much looking to use others to their advantage. She didn't understand it though. Were not all beings just that? Beings? Not stepping stones or pawns in a game to be won over the sacrifices of others? Eve shook her head as she turned to look out the window, "I'm not sure I will ever understand such things. My only goal in life has been to learn, to understand as much as I can, and to not be used by others. Ever. Again." Her words hardened as she spoke and caused David to look over at her for a long moment.
"Eve, I know what was done to you can never be undone. Our fight is far from over and I want you to know how much I appreciate you are doing this. The Coven is going to be a vast change from the human world but it can be your home if you want it to be. You'll have me... and others with time. Just give it a chance," he said softly. What he wasn't sure about was whether he was asking her to give the Coven a chance or himself.
***More coming soon. I'm at a bit of a block for events while they travel so I may just jump ahead to the arrival at the Coven but I'm not sure just yet. Thank you for sticking with me so far.***
