Chapter 12: Asking May to Homecoming
"The note said it was a surprise, right?" Drew asked. "And besides, I had to tell you in the perfect place."
"Tell me what?"
Drew started playing a beat. He kept his eyes locked on May's.
(This song is "One Thing" by One Direction.)
"I've tried playing it cool." Drew sang. "But when I'm looking at you, I can't ever be brave, cause you make my heart race."
Drew slowly started walking towards May. "Shot me out of the sky. You're my kryptonite." May smiled. "You keep making me weak. Yeah, frozen and can't breathe."
Drew stopped three feet away from May. "Something's gotta give now. Cause I'm dying just to make you see. That I need you here with me now. Cause you've got that one thing."
"So get out, get out, get out of my mind." Drew sang. "And come on, come into my life. I don't, I don't, don't know what it is. But I need that one thing. And you've got that one thing."
Drew finished singing the short song.
"Wow…" May breathed. "That was...amazing Drew."
"Thanks." Drew said. "But the reason for the song is because…" he took a deep breath. "I want to ask if you'd be my date for the Homecoming Dance."
May just continued staring at him. She wasn't expecting him to ask her that of all people. She just hoped it would happen. How should she respond though?
"So...y-you mean...I'm the girl you wanted advice on how to ask?" May asked.
"Yeah…" Drew answered. "You weren't expecting that?"
"N-no. Definitely not." May said, still surprised that Drew sang her a love song to ask her to Homecoming.
"So what's your answer?" Drew asked.
"I umm…" May said. "I-I mean...Homecoming...and dates...it's just...I...don't know." She finally said.
Drew pulled out a rose and held it out to May. She slowly accepted it. "I hope you'll think about it."
May smiled and nodded. "I will."
Drew turned around to start walking back to town.
"Wait Drew." May said. Drew stopped and faced May.
"What is it?"
"Is it true?" May asked.
Drew cocked his head in confusion.
"The song. Is everything you sang true?" She asked again.
Drew faced forward again and looked down. "The truth is...I don't know if it is." He said. "But there is something about you that does make my heart race."
May blushed and looked down at the rose, smelling its aroma. Drew walked back to town.
"I can't believe it. I can't believe it." May said, pacing back and forth in her room.
"May, aren't you happy that you got asked by Drew?" Dahlia asked.
"I am, but is this just a dream?" May asked. "I mean, Drew has tons of fangirls, and I mean tons. Yet he asked me."
"Your point?"
"Should I say yes? Should I say no? I was hoping that he would ask me, but I never thought that he actually would!" May said. "The cutest boy in the school asked me to the dance. The cutest boy in the school asked me to the dance. The cutest boy in the school asked me to the dance!" May repeated and she stopped in her tracks.
"So say yes." Dahlia said.
May quickly turned to face Dahlia. "I can't do that!"
"You can't?"
"I mean...he's the Drew. The cutest boy in school, the most popular, and one with the biggest fanbase!" May smiled just thinking about him. Her smile faded. "I can't say yes to him."
"And why not?"
"Don't you see?" May asked. "With all of his fans, there's no way I should say yes! What if he notices another girl that's way more prettier than me when we get there? And then he leaves me to dance with her!"
"I doubt that Drew will leave you for someone else."
"But, I can't have a date anyways because of the rule, remember?"
"I guess you're right. If your parents found out about Drew, then you're toast." Dahlia said.
May threw herself on her bed, staring at the ceiling. "I guess that's that." She sighed. "I have to say no to being Drew's date. And it was such a romantic song too."
"Maybe you two can still go together...but as friends?" Dahlia suggested.
May immediately sat up. "Maybe. But...won't that be weird? Being with him, but not dancing together?"
"Well, you can't be his date, but you can still have a good time with your friends." Dahlia said.
"You're right." May said. "That's what I'll do."
"Daisy, you'll never believe what happened to me earlier today." Dawn said excitedly.
"What happened?" May asked.
"Paul asked me to Homecoming!"
May's mouth hung open. "You're right. I don't believe it. Paul? You mean...purple-haired Paul? The one who looks like he doesn't care for anything?"
"Yep! That's the one!"
"And you said yes?" May asked.
"Yes I did! I've liked him probably as long as Misty has liked Ash." Dawn said.
Riiiinnnnnngggg!
Their fourth period class started shuffling around, exiting the class and heading to lunch.
"I'm so happy that your crush asked you to Homecoming." May said. "Guess what happened to me yesterday."
"What?"
"I said guess." May said.
"Aww come on. Just tell me."
"Fine. Drew asked me to be his date for Homecoming." May said.
"What?!" Dawn basically squealed. May quickly covered Dawn's mouth with her hand. Everyone in the hallway looked at them after that squeal.
"Umm...hurry. Let's go." May said, grabbing Dawn's wrist and dragging her out of that hallway.
"Drew...asked you...to Home-!" Dawn was cut off by May's hand over her mouth again.
"Can you not scream that?" May asked.
Dawn hummed a yes and May brought her hand to her side.
"So, did you say yes?" Dawn asked.
"I said I don't know." May answered. "And then he let me think about it. So now…"
"You'll say yes?" Dawn asked excitedly.
"Umm...well…"
"Hey girls."
May and Dawn looked to the right to see that Drew is now walking with them. May looked away and focused on where she's going.
"Hi Drew!" Dawn greeted. "So, I've never asked you this yet, but do you have anyone in mind to be your date for Homecoming?"
May glanced at Dawn and mouthed the words, "What do you think you're doing?"
"Umm...there's one girl that I have in mind." Drew said, looking at May.
May glanced at Drew and then quickly looked away. They all entered the cafeteria. They sat down with the rest of the gang.
Dawn nudged May. May looked at Dawn.
"So what have you decided?" Dawn whispered to May.
"I umm…" May said. She turned her body to face Drew. "Drew, can I talk to you?"
"Sure Daisy. What's up?" Drew asked.
"No. I mean...alone." May said.
"Oh. Umm…" Drew said as he looked at the gang. He looked back at May. "Sure. Choir room?"
May nodded. They both got up and left the cafeteria.
"Where are they going?" Gary asked.
"May needs some alone time with Drew." Dawn said. "Probably about her answer to him asking her to be his date for Homecoming."
"What? He asked her?!" Gary said.
"Chill out Gary. There's plenty of other fish in the sea." Misty said.
"So, I assume you have an answer for me?" Drew asked.
"Yes I do…" May answered.
"It's a yes, right? Because I really think that I could be the perfect Homecoming date for you. It being your first and all...and to go with the cutest boy in school? No girl could-"
"It's a no." May cut Drew off.
"Refuse." Drew finished his sentence. His smile faded.
"Drew, I'm sorry, but...I can't be your date for Homecoming." May said.
Without saying anything, Drew walked to the risers and sat down. "Why not?"
"It's just that...my parents...they won't let me date anyone…" May said as she went and sat down next to Drew.
"We don't have to become an actual couple. It'll just be for the dance." Drew said.
"Still. I'm not allowed to and I'm not about to disobey them."
"Okay. I understand." Drew said.
"I'll still go to the dance just...not with a date." May said. "So you can go ahead and ask someone else if you want to."
"Nah. I don't think I will." Drew said.
"Why not?"
"They're all...fans." Drew answered. "Dawn is going with Paul, Misty will most likely be going with Ash. The only other non-fan is you."
May started feeling guilty. Drew wants to have his date be someone he knows just like she does.
"I'm sorry Drew...I feel guilty now." May said.
"No. Please don't. It's fine that you said no. We can still talk to each other...as friends." Drew added, smiling.
May gave a small nod. "As friends."
Drew got off of the risers. May stood up and started walking down them as well. On the first step of the risers, May overstepped it and she stumbled forward.
Drew acted fast and he caught May in his arms. "Careful there." He said, helping her stand straight again.
May blushed at the close contact with Drew. She composed herself and quickly stood up, pulling herself away from Drew. "T-thanks." She said.
Drew flicked his hair. "Even though you said no, it looks like you're still falling for my charm."
May's face turned scarlet red.
Drew chuckled. She furrowed her eyebrows. "Well, it looks like we're done here." She walked past Drew to the door.
Drew followed her back to the cafeteria.
When they sat down, they saw the gang all staring at them.
"Umm...hi?" May said.
"Why are you guys staring at us like that?" Drew asked.
"Are you two going to Homecoming together?" Misty asked in anticipation.
"How'd you...?" May said and then she looked at Dawn. "Did you tell them?"
"Yep! Sorry. I couldn't hide why you two left." Dawn said.
"Well, to answer your question…" Drew started. "Daisy is going to Homecoming without a date. And I'm sure she'll still have fun, knowing that she missed out on dancing with the cutest boy in the school." He added, smirking.
May looked at him angrily. "I told you already. I can't date anyone because of my parents!"
"But you do think I'm the cutest boy in the school, right?"
May blushed. "I...umm…"
Drew chuckled. "I'll take that as a yes."
May composed herself and furrowed her eyebrows. She punched Drew on the arm.
"Ow…" Drew said, rubbing his arm. "What'd you do that for?"
"For being such a...jerk!" May said angrily. "You've certainly changed your attitude towards me from when we first met. Is there a reason for it?"
"Not really." Drew answered. "I'm just changing things up a bit...clumsy."
"Now a nickname?!" May yelled. "I'm not clumsy!"
"Better rethink that statement." Drew said.
May punched Drew on the arm again and the bell rang. She got up and started stomping off to the choir room.
"Nice going Drew." Gary said, laughing a little. "I see the method you're pulling." He said as they all started walking to class.
"What method are you talking about?" Drew questioned.
"You know...tease your crush to make her fall in love with you…" Gary said.
"I'm just going to be teasing her because she seems easy to tease." Drew said.
"Uh huh. Sure…" Gary said sarcastically.
"Hey. It's who I am. Daisy is fun to mess with."
