Ryan was awakened when a fist his face and he groaned opening one eye when he saw his daughter laying next to him. It made perfect sense. But there was something else that made him look over to Alex's side of the bed. Her bedside lamp was burning and he was standing with her hands resting on Asher's crib but he seemed to be sleeping. Before he could get up to ask her what's wrong she walked out of the room with her cellphone in her hand. not noticing that he was awake.
Ryan heard a knock on the door and soon after he heard it open. Walking to the staircase to see if he can have a better look at who was downstairs, he saw his brother in law standing downstairs. Ryan continued to make his way down towards the two of them to see what's going on, and it didn't take him long to understand why Alex was frustrated and upset. Luca was standing in the doorway, high as a kite and drunk, leaning on the doorway as support.
"Alex." The younger brother tried but Alex shook her head and looked at Ryan who joined them.
"C'mon you need to get to bed." Ryan said helping Luca into the guest bedroom downstairs, and it didn't take him long to fall asleep either.
When Ryan emerged again Alex sat on the couch curled up with her head leaning back against the couch. Wordlessly he sat next to her.
"I don't know what else to do Ryan. I've tried I really did but he doesn't even want to help himself." She said frustration evident in her voice.
"Don't give up on him. He's a good guy." Ryan vouched for his brother in law.
Alex didn't answer him. She closed her eyes knowing deep down that she was technically the only family he had. But she had so many questions that she wasn't even sure Luca could answer although he would be the only one with the answers.
"I'll take the kids out tomorrow and the two of you can talk." Ryan offered and she nodded her head.
"Go to bed your body is still in recovery. I'll join you in a little while." She said settling into the couch planning on watching a series. "Check Asher's diaper please." She added as her husband took the stairs, knowing too well she won't be up in bed for at least an hour.
Alex ended up falling asleep on the couch and woke up when she heard footsteps around the kitchen and saw her brother pouring himself a glass of juice. When he noticed she was awake he looked at him he stopped mid way what he was doing. "We need to talk." She said bluntly and Luca put the glass of juice on the counter and sat down blowing out a slow breath.
"What's going on? What happened? And don't lie to me Luca Joseph Parrish because I've had it." She didn't mean to sound harsh but maybe that's exactly the kind of tough love her brother needed right now.
"Nothing happened."
"Luca."
"Nothing happened Alex, I was just triggered!"
"Okay by what?"
"By you! It was my niece's birthday. I wanted to come over today I was here only to have the neighbors tell me you're not home. Which was fine don't get me wrong, until I saw pictures on Instagram that you're having a party and I wasn't invited."
"Luca, listeā¦"
Luca cut her off before she could continue her sentence. "And call me petty Alex but you were the one who told me that I'm not alone in this world anymore that you're here with me. Need I remind you that I was perfectly fine before you came to get me away from where I was."
Luca got up and took the glass of orange juice with him but turned around mid way. "Alex I might have been an addict, but I sure as hell wasn't as lonely as I am now. I had friends, now I have a sister who claims to be there but I'm too scared to hit you up because you have your own life, so I'll take a drink. And I admit that I went to far by smoking also. By the time you wake up in the morning I'll be gone." He took out the key of the apartment they had rented and he placed it on the key making his way back to the guest bedroom not bothering to turn around even after his sister called after him.
