Chapter 39: Scepter Of Love

Drew and May are flying through the sky on the magic carpet. Stars are shining, the moon is out, and of course Drew is disguised as Prince Andrew. It's still May's birthday too.

"So Princess...are you enjoying your birthday so far?" Drew asked.

"This...flying through the night sky like this…is what I love the most so far." May answered. "I must admit that at first, I just saw you as another Prince wanting to marry me, but…"

"But?" Drew questioned.

May looked at Drew. "You're really...not like the other Princes."

"And that's good, right?"

"Of course it is." May answered. She looked up at the stars. "I've always just...dreamed that if I was going to be forced to marry, it'd be for love."

"Your parents won't let you just marry a commoner either, huh?" Drew asked.

May looked back at Drew. "No they won't." She moved her gaze downwards. "I'm sorry to tell you this, this was lovely and all, but...there's actually someone that I might've fallen for and he's not royalty."

Drew listened to what May had to say. He knew she was talking about him. "What's he like?" Drew asked, playing "Prince" perfectly.

May looked up and stared into Drew's eyes. "He's...romantic...and charming…" May said. "He knows how to steal any girl's heart, but he fell in love with me. Are you sure you don't mind me telling you this?" May asked.

"Not at all."

"Well then…" May said and she continued talking about Drew. "We have a connection that seems unbreakable. He has green eyesand green hair that just…" Her voice trailed off.

"Just?"

"I just...I might be in love with him." May whispered the last part to herself, so Drew wouldn't hear. But he did.

"And also...I know that what he says is true." May continued. "There's never been one moment when he lied to me about something. His heart is pure."

Drew tensed a little at May's words. May knows that Drew would never tell a lie to her. But here he is...lying to her face.

"I guess I can say that...he is kind of like you." May said.

"Well umm...thank you for saying that, but it's getting really late. I should get you back to your castle." Drew said.

"If you must." May said. Drew turned the magic carpet around and they started flying back to Petalburg City.

"Can we stop here?" May said as they were above Petalburg.

"Sure." Drew said. He pulled the tassels on the carpet back and they came to a stop.

They sat on the carpet in the sky, overlooking the city. The entire city was illuminated in lights.

"Out of all the places in the world, this is my most favorite." May said.

"It's pretty amazing." Drew said.

May glanced at Drew and then back at the city. "Hey, you know what today reminds me of?"

"What?"

"When I starred as Jasmine in the school play of 'Aladdin'."

"Yeah, it was fun." Drew said. He immediately realized his huge slip up.

May turned to Drew and took off his crown. "I knew it!" May yelled.

"May, listen. I can explain-"

"Explain what?! That you lied straight to my face?!" May said angrily and shoved the crown onto Drew's chest.

"May, no. Well, I mean yes, but-"

"Did you think I was stupid?" May asked, eyebrows furrowed. "That I couldn't figure it out?"

"No, of course not." Drew answered.

"Drew, who's Prince Andrew?"

"...I am." Drew said after hesitating.

"Really? Or is that another one of your lies?" May said angrily.

"May, listen-"

"Forget it Drew, or Prince Andrew, or whoever you are." May cut Drew off. "Just take me home."

"But May-"

"Home. Now." May said firmly.

"...Right…" Drew made the carpet take them back to May's balcony.

May got off the carpet. "This isn't how it goes in the movie."

"May." Drew said sadly.

May turned around. "I thought you loved me!" May yelled, tears building up inside of her.

"May, I do." Drew said.

"Clearly you don't!" May yelled, crying. "All this time, I thought you loved May! But no, you only loved the Princess!" She ran into her room, tears pouring out.

"May!" Drew called. "What have I done?" Drew said quietly to himself.

"So, how'd it go?" Genie asked.

Drew sat on the bed. "She knew that I was Drew. You said that wouldn't happen."

"Well…" Genie said in a high pitched voice. "I guess the love you two share could see through my magic?" He said, more as a question.

Drew sighed. "She's completely mad at me. She wants nothing to do with me now."

"Hey...let her calm down a bit and I'm sure you two can make up." Genie said.

"What's the point?" Drew asked. "I knew that I shouldn't have lied to her, but your words tempted me."

"Cheer up, kid." Genie said. "Think, if the Princess won't listen to you...what will she listen to?"

Drew lifted his head up. "...that's it. She won't listen to me talking, but she'll listen to me…" Drew's voice trailed off.

"Everything's going to be okay May." Dahlia said. May is currently laying in her bed, crying her eyes out.

"No it won't." May said. "I was even telling him how Drew would never lie to me, and then I have to confirm for myself that he's been lying to my face!" May cried louder.

"Yeah...that wasn't good on his part." Dahlia said.

"I thought...that he really loved me for my personality over looks, but...he just…" May said.

Dahlia nodded. "I know."

"Boys are all the same."

"But...I thought this Drew person would really be the one for you." Dahlia said.

"So did I." May said. She started wiping her tears. "I just don't understand why he pretended to be a Prince. I told him that I'll try and convince my parents to let me be who I want to be with. And he should know that I like him. No one else."

"You more than like him and you know it." Dahlia said. "Think about the moments when there was you and him."

"The moments when…" May's voice trailed off.

May got off of her bed. She took a deep breath and-

(This is "When There Was Me And You" from High School Musical.)

"It's funny when you find yourself, looking from the outside." May sang softly. "I'm standing here, but all I want, is to be over there." May turned her head to face her balcony. "Why did I let myself believe, miracles could happen?" May sang as she walked out to her balcony. May placed her hands on the railing. "Cause now I have to pretend, that I don't really care."

May walked back inside. "I thought you were my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping." May continued walking towards the door to her room. "A wish upon a star, it's coming true." May opened the door and started walking down the hall, followed by Dahlia and Ninetales. "But everybody else could tell, that I confused my feelings with the truth. When there was me and you…"

"I swore I knew the melody, that I heard you singing." May started walking down the stairs at the entrance to the castle. "And when you smiled you made me feel, like I could sing along." May sang as she held her hands to her heart. "But then you went and changed the words, now my heart is empty. I'm only left with use-to-be's and once upon a song." They got to the bottom of the stairs and two guards opened the front doors for them.

"Now I know you're not a fairy tale, and dreams were meant for sleeping." They exited the castle and May started walking to the right side. "And wishes on a star, just don't come true." May sang as she looked up at the stars. "Cause now even I can tell, that I confused my feelings with the truth. Because I liked the view." May stopped walking when she stepped foot in a small rose garden. "When there was me and you." She sang as she bent down to gently pick a red rose. She stood back up straight and stared down at the rose.

"I can't believe that I could be so blind. It's like you were floating, when I was falling, and I didn't mind." May sang and then she looked back up. "Because I liked the view…" Ninetales walked forward and rubbed her head on May's leg. "I thought you felt it too, when there was me and you…" May slowly fell to her knees in the rose garden.

"Nine~!" Ninetales said worriedly.

"I'm okay Ninetales." May said. "I just…" May looked down at the rose. "I'm not one for getting mad at anyone."

"Maybe you should let Drew talk to you next time you two see each other." Dahlia said.

May stood up. "You're right. I feel terrible that I yelled at him, and...I just want to see him again soon."

"May, there you are!" Caroline's voice called from the distance. They turned around to see May's parents walking to them. Dahlia curtsied.

"Mom. Dad. Did you need me for something?" May asked.

"Yes. We wanted to give you this." Norman said once they stopped in front of them. Norman held out a pink rectangular box with a gold ribbon on it towards May.

"What's that?" May questioned.

"Your present." Caroline answered.

May took the box. "Thank you."

"Open it up." Caroline said.

May removed the lid of the present. May saw a staff-looking thing. It was gold and the gem at the top was a pink heart-shaped diamond. The staff appeared to be about two feet long.

"What is it?" May asked.

"That's a scepter." Caroline said. "It's called the Scepter Of Love."

"The Scepter Of Love?" May asked as she gently took the scepter out of the box.

May held up the scepter and the pink jewel started glowing brightly. It got so bright that everyone had to look away, so they didn't get blind. May ended up dropping the gift box on the floor to hold the scepter with both hands.

"What's going on?" May asked, looking away from the light. The light dimmed and it went back to normal.

"We...don't know why the diamond lit up like that." Caroline said truthfully.

"Do you think it's...magic?" May asked.

"Magic? Magic isn't real." Norman said.

"Then how do you explain the glow?" May questioned.

"Well...if magic is real is beyond me." Norman said.

"You see...we kept that staff in the jewel room for the day when we think that you will be ready for it." Caroline said. "And that day is today. You're seventeen now and we know how much you love the people."

"So therefore, the Scepter Of Love is perfect for you. Think of it as like...your Princess Wand." Norman said.

"Wow. Thank you so much." May said happily. "It's beautiful. I'll carry it with me everywhere I go."

"Okay May. We knew you'd love it." Caroline said. "Take good care of it."

"I will." May said.

"Sorry Roselia...things...happened." Drew said. He's back at the gazebo that he found, because he left Roselia there with May's present. "And let's just say...I kind of ruined things between May and I."

Roselia put both rose hands to her hips and looked at Drew angrily.

"Okay. I get it." Drew said. "Don't be mad at me."

"Rose…" Roselia said, a little mad at him.

Drew sighed. "Look. I'll tell you what happened on the way back to the castle. I have a guest room there now. And I'm also going to apologize to May tomorrow morning, so hopefully I can still ask her on a date even though it will be after her birthday."
