Chapter 47: I Think I Kinda, You Know
"You've reached Drew. I'm currently not available right now. Please leave me a message and I'll get back to you when I can." The voice message said through the phone.
"He didn't pick up again?" Dahlia asked once she saw May throw the phone on her bed.
"Why is he ignoring me?" May asked sadly. "Did I do something wrong?"
"I'm sure you did nothing wrong." Dahlia said. "He's just probably busy."
"All 13 times?"
Dahlia shrugged her shoulders. She then saw May's eyes get watery.
"Dahlia...what if...what if...he doesn't love me anymore?" May asked.
"Why would you say that?"
"He's...not picking up the phone...not answering my texts…" May said. "What if because we can't see each other...he actually decides to...date someone else?" She said, a few tears coming out of her eyes.
"Don't be ridiculous May. He loves you." Dahlia said. "Didn't he tell you the day when he confessed his feelings to you that he's loved you since he first saw you?"
"Yes…" May answered.
"Then I'm sure he's just busy and doesn't have his phone with him." Dahlia said.
"I hope you're right…"
"Genie, it's all my fault." Drew said. He's currently laying down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. The genie is sitting on the couch.
"Kid, I keep telling you this. It's not your fault."
"But she's forced to not talk to me because I'm a commoner and I'm too close to her." Drew said.
"Hey, just say the magic words and you'll be a Prince again."
Drew sat up. "No way Genie. I'm not going to lie again just so I can be with May."
"Suit yourself. Remember, you still have two wishes."
"I know." Drew said. "I really don't know what to do though." He threw himself back on the bed again, staring at the ceiling.
Ring ring ring. Ring ring ring.
Ring ring ring. Ring ring ring.
Drew looked next to him at his phone. He saw May's face and name on the screen.
Ring ring ring. Ring ring ring.
"Are you going to get that?" The genie asked.
Ring ring ring. Ring ring ring.
"I can't." Drew answered. "I don't want her to be in more trouble than she already is."
Ring ring ring.
The ringing stopped. Drew sighed and stared at the ceiling.
"Are you going to at least read the text messages?" The genie asked.
"No." Drew answered.
Ding!
Drew looked at his phone again and saw a notification that he got a voicemail. Drew picked up the phone and opened it, going to his voicemails.
"May…" Drew muttered to himself. He saw that May left him a voicemail. "I guess I should listen to this at least." He clicked on May's voicemail.
"H-hi Drew…" May said sadly on the voicemail. Drew could hear sniffles coming from her. "I'm leaving you this voicemail because...you haven't been answering the phone. I-I just want to know why you've been...i-ignoring me...I hope I didn't do anything wrong...If you...don't love me anymore then...I completely understand...I mean...a relationship between us will...never work…" Drew could hear May's crying become louder. "I umm...hope you can call me back...m-maybe...umm...goodbye." The voicemail ended.
"May thinks I don't love her anymore?" Drew muttered to himself. "What have I done?"
Drew got off the bed and picked up the golden rose that's on his bedside table. "Genie, in." He said as he held the rose towards the genie.
The genie started getting sucked into the rose. "Aww man...but why…?"
After the genie completely went into the rose, Drew placed it back on the table. He lifted his phone up and went into his contacts. He clicked on May's name.
Drew took a deep breath. "Please answer…"
Drew heard the ringing stop on the phone.
"H-hello…?"
"May, you answered." Drew said. "I just want to tell you something about the voicemail you left me."
"It's okay Drew…" May answered, sniffling. "I understand that...you want nothing to do with me anymore...I'm sure there'll be a Prince that-"
"No May, listen. Please." Drew said.
"I-I'm listening…"
"May, I still love you. I never stopped. The reason I haven't been answering your calls or texts is because I don't want to get you into more trouble than you already are in because of me. You didn't do anything wrong and I still want an actual relationship with you May. Please don't find a Prince to marry. I love you...Princess."
Drew didn't hear a response from May. May's tears turned into happy tears. Drew still loved her. That was just what she was hoping Drew would say. Dahlia was right, Drew really did mean what he said when he confessed. May and Drew have found true love that's unbreakable.
"May? Are you there?" Drew asked.
"Oh. Sorry about that. I'm here." May said. "And...thank you for talking to me Drew and for clearing up those questions."
"You're welcome. And please don't worry too much about us being separated. If you can, try and convince your parents to at least let me visit you. If they still say no, then...I'll figure out a way to visit without the guards noticing me."
"No Drew. Please don't." May said.
"Don't what?" Drew questioned.
"Don't come visit through my balcony anymore. I'm scared that you'll get thrown in the dungeon."
"Then...I guess just try to talk your parents into letting me visit you." Drew said.
"I'll try…"
May's bedroom door opened.
"I have to go Drew. Umm...bye." May said.
"Wait. Why-?" Drew was cut off by May hanging up.
The person who walked into May's room was Norman.
"Who were you talking to on the phone?" Norman asked.
"J-just...my friend." May answered.
Norman walked closer to May. "Give it." He said as he held out his hand.
May slowly put her phone into his hand. "Why are you going to take my phone away too?"
"Because I don't want you speaking with anyone outside of the castle." Norman answered. He started walking towards the door. "Especially that Drew person."
Norman left a sad May sitting on her bed.
"Now how am I supposed to communicate with Drew?" May asked.
"That's bad. If he tries calling you…" Dahlia said.
May gasped. "My Dad will pick up."
"Yeah...and he won't be nice to Drew…"
May frowned and her eyes turned their gaze to a black guitar case that's leaning against a nightstand. May reached out and lifted the case, placed the case on her bed, and opened it. She took out a footstool and placed it on the floor, putting her left foot on it. She grabbed the guitar, closed the case, and leaned the guitar into her left leg, ready to play.
Dahlia just watched as May was about to strum the guitar. May closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Opening her eyes, she started playing a melody, slow and gentle.
(This song is "I Think I Kinda, You Know" from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.)
"So much has happened, think of what we've done." May sang. "In the time that the Earth has traveled 'round the Sun. Winter, Spring, Summer, an' we're back to fall. We've been together hand-in-hand through it all."
"From the minute we kissed and my heart skipped a beat." May continued, playing the guitar gently. "To the night that we danced, I was swept off my feet. Sure as every year has to come to an end. I'd go spinnin' 'round the Sun with you again and again and again and again."
May's eyes started getting watery. "I think I kinda, you know." May sang, strumming and singing louder. "I think I kinda, you know. Like the way that we flow. Like the way that we go. And I love I think I kinda, you know." What May and Dahlia didn't know was that Caroline had walked to the door and is currently listening to the song. "I think I kinda, you know. I think I kinda, you know, you know, you know."
"You know how we can talk all night." May continued. "And not run outta things to talk about. It's rare that something feels this right. It feels so right."
"I think I kinda, you know." May sang. "I think I kinda, you know, you know, you know. I think I kinda, you know."
("Is she singing about Drew?") Caroline thought from outside the room.
"Oh, I think I kinda, you know. I think I kinda, you know, you know, you know." May sang and she slowed down the beat.
"I can't help dreamin' of you." May sang softly. "Guess I'm sayin' I don't not love you." May paused, thinking about what she just sang. "You know, you know, you know." She let the last chord fade out.
("Hmm…") Caroline thought. ("She sang that from her heart. I never thought that she'd ever...love someone as much as she loves him.") Caroline walked away from her room.
"Wow May…" Dahlia breathed. "You've never said the "L" word before, admitting that you love Drew."
May smiled slightly. She put her guitar in the case and the footstool in the case. "I guess I...really love him more than I thought." She put the case next to the nightstand and she faced Dahlia.
"And did you just come up with that song right now?" Dahlia asked.
"Yeah...I did." May answered. "I didn't know I could do that. Drew's been giving me guitar lessons, but...writing a song on the spot? That's new."
"You just sang what came to your mind at that moment." Dahlia said.
"Yeah...I guess I did."
"Drew needs to hear that song."
"What? No, he can't." May said quickly.
"Why not? I'm sure he'd love to hear that song." Dahlia said.
"He would, but...I'm too shy to sing him a song." May said. "He sings songs to me, but I don't think I can bring myself to sing a song this deep to him."
"Well, whenever you're ready." Dahlia said. "I do think that you should sing it to him sometime."
May smiled. "I will when the time is right."
