Chapter 52: Wondering
"Kiara, stop this!" May yelled.
The Queen of Mean, Kiara, is using her scepter to levitate herself in the sky. May is levitating herself as well in her transformed state too.
"Never!" Kiara yelled. Thunder is booming, rain is pouring, and the two sisters are protected from the rain in an invisible force field. Kiara uses her scepter to launch a beam of purple light at a house.
"Kiara, no!" May yelled.
The purple beam hit the house and that house exploded into flames. The people are all running around in fear. Tons of screams are heard. Kiara laughed evilly. The flames also have some sort of protection that keeps it from extinguishing from the rain.
"Kiara…" May said. "This ends now!" She used her scepter and launched a pink beam at Kiara.
Kiara quickly turned to face May and she formed a shield in front of her. The beam hit the shield and disappeared.
Kiara laughed evilly. "Nice try, May. But you'll never stop me."
"Kiara, just end this and come live happily with your family." May said.
"Family?! FAMILY?!" Kiara yelled. "You were ALWAYS the favorite in the family. And I was just...invisible!"
"You know that's not true."
"Says the one who stole everything I ever wanted!" Kiara yelled.
"The crown? Because I understand that you want to rule, but this is not the way to show us that you deserve it!" May yelled back.
Kiara clenched her teeth. She launched another purple beam at another house, exploding it into flames. More screams were heard.
"Kiara, stop it!" May yelled.
Kiara just ignored May and launched another beam at another house. May acted quickly and used her scepter to form a shield in the beam's path. The beam disappeared.
"Kiara, listen to me!" May said. "You can be a Princess that the people love! You don't have to do this!"
Kiara smirked evilly. "You're right...I don't have to do this…"
"What are you talking about? Why are you looking at me like that?"
Kiara gave an evil laugh. "Because you stole everything for me, I'll steal everything from you!" With that yelled, Kiara flew off.
"What?" May muttered, trying to understand what Kiara could possibly mean by that. May's eyes widened when she understood what her sister meant. "No."
May started flying after Kiara.
"Kiara, stop!" May yelled.
Kiara turned around while continuing to fly to her destination. "I'm going to make sure you feel the pain that I've felt when you were told that you are to be the next Queen!" She yelled. She then turned around and sped up.
May sped up as well. "But he doesn't deserve this! He did nothing wrong! Leave him out of it!"
Kiara ignored May and continued flying through the sky at great speed. She got to her destination. A mansion. Drew's mansion. She turned around and looked at May.
May stopped ten feet away from Kiara. "Kiara, don't do it."
Kiara smirked evilly and then turned around, looking down at the mansion. May gasped and saw Kiara launch a purple beam at the mansion. The purple beam was so fast that May wasn't able to stop it on time with a shield.
They both saw as the mansion exploded into flames. May's eyes started getting watery, mouth slightly open, as she stared at the large fire.
May shut her eyes. ("Drew...you didn't deserve this…") She thought. ("She's out of control and…I couldn't stop her. I wanted to tell you some time after I saved Kiara that...I love you.) She opened her eyes and tears started coming out.
She clenched her hands and yelled at the top of her lungs, "DREW!"
Kiara quickly sat up, breathing heavily. She looked around her. She's in her room. She looked at her outfit. She's not transformed into the Queen of Mean.
"A nightmare…" Kiara breathed. "It was just a nightmare…"
She laid back down, staring at the ceiling.
"Why did I dream of something so...evil?" Kiara muttered to herself. "It's been a month since I was evil and I had a dream like that." She brought her hands to her eyes, rubbing them. She then sat up and got out of bed. "I was just awful when that happened." She looked outside. The sun was coming up. "The Queen of Mean is now haunting me for it. Why?"
Kiara continued staring at the sunrise.
"I…" Kiara started. "Am scared." She admitted to herself. "I'm scared of turning back into the Queen of Mean. That's why I had that dream." She started walking towards the door.
Kiara sat down at the grand piano. "The Queen of Mean is always going to be a part of me." She muttered to herself. "The scary part of me. And...what if I really do become her again? I might get jealous of May again and turn into the Queen of Mean. What will I do if that happens?" She placed her fingers on the keys of the piano. "So many questions…"
Kiara took a deep breath and started playing a gentle melody.
(This song is "Wondering" from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.)
"Seems like a part of me will always have to lose." Kiara sang softly. "Every single time I have to choose. Swore that it felt right but was I wrong? Is this where I'm supposed to be at all? I don't have the answers not today. It's like nothing makes the questions go away. What I'd give to see if the grass was greener."
"On the other side of all I've had and lost." Kiara continued. "Would it be enough? Or would I still be wondering?" At this moment, May is getting out of bed.
"If I could go back and change the past," Kiara sang louder. "Be a little braver than I had and bet against the odds, May goes to the bathroom. "Would I still be lost? Even if I woke up in my dreams, would there still be something I'm missing? If I had everything, would it mean anything to me?"
She played a little piano instrumental section.
"Feels like I might have broke the best thing that I had." Kiara sang. "Said too much to ever take it back. Scared I'll never find something as good. Would I even know it if I could? From the other side of all I've had and lost. Would it be enough? Or would I still be wondering?"
May exited the bathroom, exited her room, and started walking down the hall.
"If I could go back and change the past," Kiara sang louder. "Be a little braver than I had and bet against the odds, would I still be lost?"
May heard someone singing and playing the piano. She's right in front of the music room and she peeks inside.
"Even if I woke up in my dreams," Kiara sang. "Would there still be something I'm missing? If I had everything, would it mean anything?" May listens to the song.
"Maybe I should turn around and take the other road." Kiara sang. "Or maybe I'm just looking for what I already know. I'm just wondering."
("She sounds a little sad and confused…") May thought.
"If I could go back and change the past," Kiara sang softly. "Be a little braver than I had and bet against the odds, would I still be lost?" She started singing louder again. "Even if I woke up in my dreams, would there still be something I'm missing? If I had everything, would it mean anything to me?" She got softer.
"Would it be enough?" Kiara continued. "Or would I still be wondering?" She finished the song and just stared down at the keys.
"Feel better?"
Kiara jumped a little at the voice. She turned her head to see May standing 10 feet away from her. "What are you doing here?" Kiara asked.
"Well, I was actually going to go to your room." May answered, walking towards Kiara. "And I heard the piano and someone singing in here." May sat down on the piano bench next to Kiara.
"Oh…" Kiara said sadly. She looked back at the keys.
"What's wrong?" May asked.
"It's nothing…"
"It's obviously something." May said. "The lyrics you sang… 'If I could go back and change the past, be a little braver than I had and bet against the odds, would I still be lost'. Those words tell me that you're confused about something. And you're clearly frowning right now. So what's wrong?"
Kiara sighed. "I guess you win. I'm just...worried that I might become the Queen of Mean again. But next time...I'll do something way worse to Hoenn...and you."
"Why are you worried about that?" May asked. Kiara looked at May. "You're not the Queen of Mean, Kiara. You saw the error of your ways and turned back to normal."
"But...she's a part of me."
"What are you talking about?"
("I won't tell her that I basically killed Drew in my nightmare, so she doesn't get scared.") Kiara thought. "I'm saying...she's never left. Because I am her."
"No you're not."
"May, you don't understand." Kiara said. She stood up. "The Queen of Mean will always be a part of me. She never left. And that's why I'm scared. I could possibly get too upset or jealous that I completely lose it and transform into her again."
"But you won't." May said. She stood up.
"Huh?"
"Kiara, the Queen of Mean may be inside of you, looking for a way to come out." May said. "But you won't let it come out."
"But May-"
"You won't let it." May repeated, cutting Kiara off. May smiled. "You're a Princess of Hoenn. Protector of Hoenn. You shouldn't worry about the Queen of Mean making another appearance. The more you show how much you love your family and all of Hoenn, then there's no possible way for you to turn back into her. I'm positive that you'll get rid of her completely. Just believe in yourself."
Kiara didn't respond for a moment. She smiled slightly. "Thanks, sis. I needed to hear that."
May nodded. "You're welcome. Now, what do you say we go check on our Pokémon?"
"Kay."
It really has been a month since the Queen of Mean first appeared. Which means that it's been a month since May has even seen Drew. They've been communicating through letters every now and then. Drew thanked May for the Shiny Stone that she sent him for his birthday. May would talk about what she's been up to like helping Kiara gain the trust of the people, practicing her magic so she doesn't lose as much energy as she used to, and wishing that he was there to talk to her.
Drew's Ninetales would also still visit May's Ninetales. Those two have really fallen in love with each other. How cute. And their relationship has even gotten to be like May and Drew's. Drew's Ninetales would tease May's and he's romantic too. May and Kiara would both watch them play together and May would always wish that she was together with Drew.
May didn't like being unable to see Drew at all, especially because she loves him. She wants to be his and him to be hers, but she's not allowed to do that. Sometimes, May would just sit on a chair that's on her balcony and she'll stare up at the sky, daytime or night. She'll wish to see Drew and tell him that she really loves him now. She's never said the word "love" to Drew yet. She hasn't been able to do that. She's only said that she might "like" him more than just a friend, but that was the day of the talent show when he confessed. She wants to tell him that she loves him now and she hopes that he hasn't met someone over summer vacation to love.
On the other hand, Drew hopes that May doesn't fall in love with one of the Princes that's been visiting her. He still loves her and only her. He hasn't heard that confirmation from her yet that tells him that she loves him, but he'll wait for the time when they can see each other again. He wants to be hers and her to be his. He wants them to be boyfriend and girlfriend just like May does. He wants to protect her with his life. He's never felt this strong about anyone before. They both know that they're meant to be together, but will the King ever allow it?
