Chapter 2: Escape
The two hedgehogs walked silently down the metallic hallway, sonic glanced at Shadow.
"Thanks...for having my back." Sonic murmured.
"You wanted the subject dropped, stick to your word." Shadow growled.
Sonic sighed, and glanced ahead. "You think we're walking into a trap?"
"How dumb do you think I am hedgehog? Of course we're walking into a trap but we'll be fine." Shadow replied dryly.
Sonic nodded, glancing at the ceiling. "Y'know I thought we would've run into something by now."
Shadow slowly nodded, the hallway seemed to go on forever and all the rooms they had passed were storage. "You sound like you want something to happen." Shadow said shifting his gaze to the blue hedgehog.
Sonic rolled his eyes. "Well yeah a little excitement would be nice."
"Yeah it would."
Meanwhile...
Rouge folded her bat wings right to her body, crawling through the air vent. She paused when she reached a cross road then her large ears strained to listen for anything. She heard a distant voice coming from the right, she crawled towards the voice and stopped at vent in front of her looking down upon a room. It was oddly shaped, like a semi circle then a square. Their were large monitors looking around the ship in the main monitor was Sonic and Shadow. She could tell Sonic was joking around by his expression but what troubled her was the man in the room below her, studying these monitors. Dr. Eggman.
The mad doctor grinned evilly at the monitors, he swivelled his chair to the side and face his assistant Orbot.
"The Egg mobile is ready boss."
Eggman nodded his head slowly. "Good, good...id rather not be blown to bits like those meddlesome hedgehogs."
Rouge rolled her eyes from the vent.
Eggman sat back and kicked his legs up on the table and watched the hedgehogs walk down the hall. "That's right. Fall right into my trap you foolish pincushions."
Rouge clenched her fists, it was taking all her self control not to barge in and kick the doctor.
Eggmans grin widened as the hedgehogs entered the room, he pressed down on a button and the door slammed behind the hedgehogs.
A robotic voice from the speakers "lockdown sequence activated."
The air vent sealed below rouge and she frantically stumbled backwards and desperately crawled out of the vent the chambers closing behind her. "Sonic! Shadow! You guys need to get out of there now Eggman's going to blow up this entire place!"
Shadow glared at the locked door. "Well he slammed a door shut behind us so he's trying to lock us in." He said while shifting his gaze towards Sonic, checking for any signs of distress.
Sonic just looked determined, he took a few steps back and charged up a spin dash and launched himself at the door, he bounced back clumsily and stumbled to his feet.
"Sonic, we can Chaos control out of here." Shadow said, gesturing him to come over.
Sonic quickly dashed to his side and grinned at the dark hedgehog.
Shadow pulled an emerald out of his quills, he glanced at the emerald with a troubled expression.
"What's up?" Sonic asked."
"The energy feels unstable...I think I can use chaos control though..." Shadow murmured. He grasped sonics wrist and held the emerald up. "Chaos contr-Augh!"
The chaos emerald crackled with unstable energy and shocked Sonic and Shadow, both hedgehogs collapsing on the ground.
"Ughn...what was that?" Sonic asked while rubbing his head.
"Something's interfering with the chaos energy." Shadow grumbled.
It took a minute for it to sink in.
"W-we're actually trapped here..." Sonic murmured then frantically charged at the wall hoping for it to collapse.
Shadow joined him though his efforts weren't as desperate, after several minutes he gave up. But sonic didn't. "Sonic."
Thud. Thud. Thud.
"Sonic!"
Sonic snapped out of his trance, gazing at sonic wide-eyed.
"Take a breather we need to think."
"No. We don't have time, this place is blowing up as we speak!"
"That's it!"
"What's it?"
"The explosion will weaken the wall, maybe blow it apart completely. Then we'll make our escape." Shadow said his eyes glowing.
Sonics ears twitched the explosions were getting louder, he glanced at shadow with guarded eyes.
"Get in the corner! Now!" Shadow growled.
As sonic ran the room was enveloped in a blast, Sonic tried to curl in a ball as a last effort to save himself and Shadow turned his back as defence.
"Shadow! Shadow do you read me?" Rouge shouted through the communicator.
"Y-yes I read you. *cough*cough* sonic? Where are you?" Shadow called out coughing on the dust, his ears twitched when he detected a groan.
"Here..." Sonic mumbled, dragging himself out from under a piece of metal.
Shadow didn't like his tone, he coughed as more dust slowly fell. He carefully maneuvered through the rubble saw sonic slide out from under the metal. His eyes immediately met a large metal shard stuck into his side.
Sonic quickly put a hand over it smiling cheekily. "It's nothing, I-I'm fine."
"Let me have a look." Shadow said crouching down next to him.
Sonic rolled his eyes and moved his hand away, exposing the injury.
Shadow noticed it wasn't bleeding, perhaps keeping his blood in. He grazed the metal with his fingertips and Sonic made no signs of pain. "It must be stuck in there pretty good." Shadow mused.
Sonic shrugged. "It doesn't hurt, so it can't be that bad."
"I think we should leave it for now." Shadow said standing up.
"Works for me." Sonic said nonchalantly.
Shadow sighed and offered him a hand, sonic grasped it and pulled himself up. Shadow glanced over where the door was it was destroyed. "Can you run?"
Sonic nodded and straightened up a bit.
"What happened!?" Rouge asked sounding hysterical.
"The wall room were in caught some of the explosions, sonic has a piece of metal wedged into his side." Shadow explained.
"Okay...Sonic honey, how you feeling?" Rouge asked.
"I feel fine, promise. We shouldn't be standing around while this thing blows, let's move." Sonic said gently.
"Okay, whatever you do don't take out the metal." Rouge said sternly. "Get moving."
Shadow glanced at Sonic, he did look fine. "Let's go." He said dashing off, Sonic followed close behind. Shadow lead the way and tried his best to remember where they came from. After a few minutes he glanced over his shoulder. "How're you making out?"
Sonic smiled and rolled his eyes. "I've been through worse." He then yelled as a piece of the ceiling fell right behind him.
Shadow glanced ahead again and saw a bit of natural light. "We have no way down, we don't have a plan.
"We'll have to jump off, sand can't hurt that much." Sonic said with a sheepish grin.
"We aren't doing that." Shadow growled, turning and running.
Sonic followed him, he glanced up and noticed the ceiling was falling down. "Shads the ceiling is going to collapse on us!"
"No it won't!" Shadow growled dodging a piece of metal falling from the ceiling. Shadow smirked as he saw the sky, he glanced over his shoulder. "See I told you we'd be fine!"
Sonics eyes widened as a large metal piece was about to fall onto shadow, he dove forward pushing shadow off of the ship, the metal crashing down onto himself.
Shadow could only watch as he was falling, sonics face tighten in anguish. He was falling alone while sonic was trapped.
"SONIC!"
