Chapter 3

1991

Happy age 40

Bramty age 6

Happy knew he told Bramty to only call for emergencies but he missed talking to his little girl, and yes, he had claimed her as his... already being attached to the little girl. You just couldn't not love her.

It wasn't looking like he'd be back in Charming for 6 months at least and he didn't like that so he picked up his burner phone reserved for her calls only and pressed dial to the only number programmed into it.

The phone rang for a while and he was about to give up when she answered. "Bramty?"

"Happy" he could hear the smile in her voice and he couldn't help but smile back even though she couldn't see him laying there alone in his dorm room at the Tacoma clubhouse.

"Hey baby girl. Listen, I know I said that this phone was only for emergencies but I was hoping that you would answer if I called every now and then"

"I miss you"

His heart clenched hearing her sad little whisper "I missed you more. I bet yah I did" he heard her small giggle and knew he'd distracted her enough to made her feel better, hopefully these phone calls would put them both in better moods because ever since he got back to Tacoma 2 months ago he'd been a bit more extreme than normal and his brothers noticed.

"I don't think so... I missed you a whole lot!"

Happy chuckled "I know, I know baby girl. How you been doing? Did you go back to school yet?" he asked but he knew she had. He had googled the school dates so he knew she had started the last semester of kindergarten last month.

"Yeah! I go to school everyday but I think I got put in a bad class because all the other kids are stupid. idiotas!"

He laughed loudly at that, on his way to Tacoma from Charming he had stopped in to check on his Ma who immediately knew something was different, said he looked happier and had demanded to know why.

He hadn't planned on telling her anything but even at the thought of his baby girl he'd been grinning like a fool and ended up spilling his guts to his Ma who'd demanded that she be allowed to call Bramty.

Apparently his Ma was rubbing off on the girl because that little addition of Spanish was straight from his Ma's mouth.

"It's not a bad class baby girl, you're just too smart for those kids" and it was true, with the way she grew up reading was the only thing she was allowed to do and there was a small crappy book store she would go to when things in her house got bad for a few hours.

"Remember when you said, "My baby girl is like a goddamn sponge" she lowered her voice to make her best impersonation of his voice as she repeated his words back to him, both of them laughing.

"I don't sound like that" he pointed out and she giggled

"Si tu puedes"

Happy groaned, she already knew more Spanish than he did and she only spoke to his Ma twice a week; Tuesdays and Thursdays. "Baby you know I don't know what that means but I get the feeling you're teasing me"

"I was teasing you because I'm right and you're wrong. Abuela said that I need to tell you that more often because all those compliments you get from your club go straight to your head. She says it's our job to balance it out since we're the only one's badass enough to knock you on your ass if you deserved it"

"So you and your grandma are ganging up on me?" he chuckled but he really liked her referring to his mom as her grandma.

"Yup"

When he heard her yawn he checked the time finding it was already 1 am and she had school the next day. "Bramty, go to sleep okay? I'm gonna hang up and I need you to put the phone back in the box for me before you go to sleep"

"Okay" he head her mumbled sleepily "I love you Happy"

He was shocked into silence "I love you too Bramty" he smiled to himself when she hung up and he just laid there in bed replaying the words over and over in his head. He liked that- No, he loved that she loved him.

"KIDDDDD!" Bramty was woken up by the high pitched screeching of one from one of the women. Who? she couldn't tell yet... they all sounded the same when they screamed like that. thought it didn't make difference who, because she'd get in trouble if she didn't hurry either way.

"Yes?" Bramty scurried into the main room of the new house they'd moved into with one of her moms friends boyfriend. As she came into the room, the scene in front of her made her stomach drop but she didn't dare stare or freeze.

There were four men, standing over the body of the red-headed woman named Cindy who had obviously been beaten to death. They eyed her but she continued on unfazed by their hardened glares. Nothing much scared her anymore, nothing they could do or say anyway. It wasn't like she hadn't seen this exact situation before either... it was always sad but she knew she wasn't allowed to say anything about it.

"You need to clean this up. NOW!" Katherine, her mom, yelled at her pointing to Cindy and she nodded grabbing the cleaning supplies from the closet.

"Will someone else take her away so I can clean the room?" she asked carefully

Katherine's hand connected with her face too quick for Bramty to have prepared herself for and she stumbled backwards falling to the floor.

"Alright. Calm down" One of the men chuckled stepping up towards her mom who melted into the man's chest and Bramty knew what that look Katherine was giving him meant and she looked away.

Her mind flashing back to Mrs. Macy's lesson about family in school, moms and dads... love... but that look wasn't love it was seduction.

"You said the kid was smart?" the second man questioned the guy holding Katherine who nodded and hummed in agreement.

Bramty didn't like the way they were looking at her, she knew this could only be bad for her.

She missed Happy!

The man with blue hair crouched down in front of her and she couldn't help but stare at the colourful hair which made him chuckle. "Everybody likes the hair, kid" she quickly gave him her full attention knowing her punishment would be worse if she didn't.

He nodded smirking in Katherine's direction, "We've got a job for you to do kid" he placed a book in front of her "You're going to learn how to cook us some crank and maybe I'll reward you" he grinned but she'd heard that line before and she knew it would be the furthest thing she could think of to a reward... it would be torture.

And either way it would happen, whether he called it a reward or punishment didn't matter cause nothing can stop it.

"I don't know what this means" she whispered hoping she could convince them she was too young to know how to make drugs. In truth, she'd grown up surrounded by drugs or drug kitchens and she already knew how to make them but they didn't know that.

"That's what the red-head said" he smirked and she cried out in pain when he grabbed her hair and pulled her to her feet. "You'll learn. And I'll show you what happens if you make a mistake"

Bramty gulped remembering Happy as a way to calm herself down. He wouldn't want her to be a baby, he would tell her to be strong and that was what she was going to do.

The man still holding onto her hair kicked the door shut and laughed as he turned to the second dresser in her room - the one she avoided at all costs.

Happy sighed when he woke up the next morning and hadn't received a message or a call back from Bramty. It had happened a few times if she'd managed to go to bed early or if she was out - though she never did tell him where. But the fact it had been happening more and more recently worried him.

There was too much the club needed him to do in Tacoma for him to head up to Charming right now.

Ignoring his SAMTAC brothers watchful eyes Happy grabbed a beer with the breakfast toast that the sweetbutt's had made. "Brother?" Lorca clapped him on the shoulder as he sat down.

Happy nodded at the other Tacoma Enforcer in response. Lorca sat down on the stool next to him, he knew his brother was worried about his unease lately but he couldn't help it. Happy also couldn't tell them anything to explain it. Least of all Lorca who was a former SAMCRO member almost 7 years ago.

"Happy... What's going on brother? You've been on edge and more intense lately?" Lorca prompted and then sighed when he realised he, like everyone else, would get nothing in response. "How's you're mom doing? that last trip to Bakersfield messed you up man"

Knowing he had to give Lorca something, Happy nodded in agreement. It wasn't a lie; his mom wasn't doing good physically and it always messed him up seeing that but it wasn't what had him so stressed right now.

"MS drugs still working?" Lorca questioned and he shrugged with a slight huff, always having been a private person and most definitely not a talker when it came to most people... very few brought that out in him and those that did could be counted on one hand. "Take it easy on the beer Happy" the man sighed before getting up and walking away.

Happy took a chance to look around the clubhouse as everyone got up and started for the day. Lee, Vin, Lorca and Kozik their clubs officers were all sitting and talking while they ate. Donut was on his computer, doing shit as the clubs intelligence officer. Bowie was slowly falling back asleep on the couch and Tiny was yet to appear from getting shit faced last night.

He watched Donut, a relatively new patched member of 3 years get up and walk up towards the dorms and Happy wondered if the kid could do a computer check on Bramty since she hadn't spoken to him or his mom much in the past 2 months.

Slowly getting off his stool, Happy walked up towards the dorms and knocked on Donut's door. The shaggy brown haired biker opened the door blowing the hair from where fell across his face before freezing in his spot.

Happy smirked internally at the instant fear in the kids eyes and pushed his way through the door shutting it behind him.

"Wh-" Donut cleared his throat recovering from the shock and trying to hide the fear "What are you doing here Happy?"

Happy stared at the man who quickly looked away "I need a favour. A personal one that I need to know nobody else... not even Lee, will find out about"

Donut's eyes snapped up to his again and the kid shrugged "As long as it doesn't involve the club and isn't something that the club would disapprove of then sure"

Happy nodded, the guy didn't need to know Jax's order and he wasn't going to spill this shit if he didn't think it was a threat to the club...which it isn't. "When you hack into systems and find shit out on people... does it work with kids? Like, could you hack into a school or something?"

Donut wore a constant shocked expression and Happy wanted to kick the kid to snap him out of it so he'd be able to get some damn answers. Quickly sensing his glare Donut nodded, "Like attendance, nurse visits, grades, assignments, parent teacher shit... that kinda stuff?"

Happy nodded, that was exactly what he wanted "Anything you can find on her I want to know"

"Okay give me her name"

"Bramty Santiago. Charming Cali, 1st grade" he answered watching Donut's eyes widen slightly as he no doubt put together the pieces of what had him so pissed the last few times he'd been back from Charming.

"Alright. I'll let you know when it's done... it shouldn't take too long" Donut agreed and Happy nodded leaving the room. He knew he didn't have to remind the kid this stays between them because he had no doubt Donut would sooner shit his pants than rat on him.

It didn't take long for Donut to get the information he needed and Happy was relieved to have found the folder sitting on his desk when he walked in his dorm room that night. With a sigh he sat down on his bed seeing no new messages or calls from Bramty.

He smiled at the teacher report card comments in the file, "Bramty is an extremely lively young girl. She is brilliantly smart for her age and I encourage her to continue expanding her knowledge. Bramty is a popular student, however she tends to be brutally honest with others and her regard for other students feelings is an area to be improved." He couldn't help but smile, that was his little girl to a T and he loved her for it.

She had won awards and competitions for her academic work, placing first place more than not in the speeches and debating or spelling competitions. Her activities in the dance squad and the choir gave her credits in sports and more than a few awards this past few months alone.

What concerned him thought was the 2 visits to the nurse for a sprained wrist and a split lip both claiming to be injuries from falling in the playground. Happy wasn't too convinced knowing the ways she lived and he didn't think for a second that was the truth. Especially not when he read that she'd had 10 days off this month alone.

More than she'd ever had before in a single semester, school was her escape from her mother and mothers friends. Happy knew even though she didn't like the learning too much, she still liked it a hell of a lot better than being at home.

He needed to go to Charming!

"Fuck" he mumbled running a hand over his face, if someone was hurting her or Katherine was taking her the strip club again then he'd be pissed beyond all reason. He needed to get to Charming and he wasn't sure Lorca would approve that right now.

Instead he dialled Bramty's number and hoped she'd answer this time, when the phone answered he let out a relieved breath he didn't realise he had been holding. "Baby girl?"

"Hi" she whispered happily

"Hey, baby you didn't call last night" he pointed out hoping she'd offer some reasonable answer that would stop the worry building in his chest. When she said nothing he sighed, silence meant she wasn't going to talk about this and his technique for questioning people usually didn't involve him actually talking, so he had no idea how to go her to answer him. "How was school?"

"School is good. I like going to school a lot and my teacher gave me a report card again... do you want to see my report card?"

He smiled, "I already saw your report card"

"How?"

"A friend of mine sent me a copy on the computer, your teacher doesn't know. It was a really good report card, baby... did you read it?"

"Yeah!"

"I don't want you to stop being honest. No matter what your teacher says, I like it, it's good to be confident" he nodded

"I remember what you said; choose the people you care about and then everyone else's words and actions can roll off your back"

Happy chuckled, she always seemed to remember stuff like that and he was glad she'd used that advice. It was good advice especially for a kid in school surrounded by bullies and bitches who'll make others feel like shit. "I'm glad you remembered that. You got friends at school?"

"Yeah" she sighed "I've got a lot of people to play with and we're all nice to each other but I don't really like any of them that much"

"I was like that as a kid" he admitted remembering his youth, he may be old now but human nature didn't change. You'll always have the quiet kid, the bullies, the nerd, the popular ones, and etcetera. Not surprisingly Bramty was a little of all of those rolled into one kid.

"You were? Did you have lots of friends?"

"I had a good amount of friends when I was your age. Had a best friend too and he was the only one that I actually gave two shits about... but I still hung out with the others"

"I don't have a best friend at school"

He smiled a little at her cute little sigh, "You'll find one. Don't worry baby girl... now tell me how you're doing? You didn't call Ma in 2 weeks?"

"I missed the time to call her when she would be awake"

"Yeah, yeah I know baby girl but why? What's going on?" he was officially worried now and her avoidance wasn't making him feel any better about leaving her their with Katherine. If he didn't think one of those crack whores would call the cops on him then he'd have her out of that house already.

"Katherine has a new boyfriend"

He raised a brow at that, he didn't know if that was good or not and he was afraid to ask. Was she not calling because she found someone to be her father and look after her? Someone better than him at it? Happy cleared his throat, "Is.. is that good - I mean, is... so you like him?"

"No!"

Happy felt both relief and dread at the same time, relief that she was still his baby girl but dread at what an unknown male hanging around could do to his little girl. "Bramty" he sat up in bed, serious now with this threat. "What's going on baby girl? I need you to talk to me here and tell me how I can help you... you know I'll do whatever needs to be done for you baby"

"Katherine's only having sex with him and his friends so they give her drugs... he's a meanie and I hate him!"

"Jesus baby girl. That woman is something fucking else!" he hissed before sighing, "Your okay though, right? nobody is hurting you? You can stay away from the drugs and your mom?" he asked hoping she could for a little while until he could go up to Charming and kick this asshole out himself.

"I'm fine"

He sighed in relief, as long as she wasn't being hurt then everything was okay for a little while longer. "I can come up to Charming and kick this asshole out for you baby but it's gonna be a little while longer before I can get out of Tacoma... I'm sorry."

"Thank you"

"Hey, if anyone hurts you... you know all you have to do is tell me and I'll be there right away. Even if the club doesn't want me to leave. I'll protect you baby girl but you gotta tell me this shit, okay?"

"Okay. I love you and I really, really miss you"

He chuckled, "I miss you lots Bramty and I love you baby girl" he could hear her yawn on the other end and as much as he wanted to keep her talking to him he couldn't risk Katherine or this new boyfriend finding the phone and taking it away. "Go to sleep kiddo. Put the phone in the box and get some rest, okay?"

"Okay. I love you" she mumbled before hanging up and Happy couldn't help but smile at the endearment
