Chapter 4

1991

Happy age 40

Bramty age 6

Happy had made himself Bramty's emergency contact at school since he was the one paying for excursions or school uniforms. After hearing the school had been complaining her uniform was too old, he'd stepped up realising Katherine wasn't gonna do it.

He didn't mind though, it was just something he wanted to do in order to make his little girl a little happier and give her the shit she needs to get by.

But putting his name down as emergency contact also meant if there were problems, he was the one called. Cause Katherine didn't even have a phone anymore according to Bramty 'cause she sold it to buy more drugs'.

Lucky for her, he was in Charming for a run that had gone bad and he'd offered to take Tig back to Charming with Bobby. Neither one of his brothers would question him on anything and so he was here, at Bramty's school, because they called him in for disciplinary reasons.

Happy couldn't help but be a little nervous, being back in this school reminded him of the many times he'd been the one in trouble. The school office looked the same as his did too and it wasn't helping.

"Happy?" he turned when he heard his name and spotted Bramty sitting on a chair outside a closed office door, no doubt the principles office. She looked like she was physically alright and he smirked scooping her up and she hugged him.

"Hey, baby girl" he kissed her cheek walking over to the office desk where the secretary was watching him closely. Specifically, eyeing his Kutte warily.

"You must be Mr. Lowman then?" the secretary cleared her throat looking at him over her glasses and he nodded. "Right, well you can go in now... right through that door"

Happy sighed and nodded still carrying Bramty as they walked into the principles office and took seats in the two chairs opposite the mans desk. He remembered doing this enough times as a kid to know this part.

"Hello, you must be Bramty's father, um we're here today because of a disciplinary issue regarding Bramty" The principle was curt and polite although he looked like he'd rather be having any other conversation than this one and Happy couldn't disagree with the man.

He also didn't correct the man on him not being Bramty's father.

"What happened?" he asked

"Yes, well that's what we're here to find out. There was an issue in the classroom today and Bramty was pushing around and yelling at a boy in her class... the language she used was unacceptable"

Happy turned to Bramty and raised a brow but she said nothing, only staring at the principle with a blank look.

The Principle sighed when it didn't look like she was going to say anything, "Bramty was taken to the office to give her account of what happened but she refused to say a word about it"

Frowning Happy looked at her again, this time with a raised brow as he asked "What happened?"

Bramty looked at him glaring, her lips curled into a disgusted frown like the idea of explaining herself was one that she hated. Happy was confused by the reaction until she sneered, "I'm not no rat" and then it made sense.

He smirked back at her and nodded, "Ain't ratting if it's me your talking to. I ask, then you answer - got it?" Bramty nodded instantly relaxing. "What happened?" he asked again

She didn't take her eyes off of him, she didn't look at the principle as she told him what had happened. Happy couldn't help but fell proud of his girl for everything she'd done.

"He was pushing around Lily and she's smaller than him, he was doing it cause it was funny. I yelled at him and he called me smelly" her nose wrinkled in disgust, "Who calls people smelly as an insult?" Bramty scoffed and Happy smirked. "So I pushed him back. He cried like a puss-"

"Language" Happy shook his head at her and she nodded with a sigh. He'd have to talk to her about cussing in school since there wasn't a cuss word under the sun she didn't know and use. But there's a difference between joking with him and using them at school when they aren't necessary.

"Right" the principle cleared his throat, "Well, that matches with the other girls statements so... I guess we'll just send her home for the day and it'll be fine"

Happy nodded and Bramty smiled before picking her backpack up and taking his hand as they walked back out the school. "Hap? are you spending the day with me?"

He nodded, it had been the plan when he got back into Charming this morning but he'd been waiting until she finished school this afternoon to tell her. Now he didn't have to wait. "Yeah baby girl, what do you wanna do?"

"Chibs?" Happy stood more awkwardly than he had felt in a long time as the Scotsman turned around to face him.

"Hap, brother? Yer good?" Chibs asked slightly frowning and Happy figured it was probably because the only time he's really spoken to the man was about business or injuries.

"Need a favour" He sighed, "Got something I gotta go get for Ma, heading back tonight and I left it till last minute... think you could take my place at this meeting?"

Chibs nodded without any hesitation before clapping him on the back, "Sure can brother, yer look after yer Mum. I'll let Clay know"

Happy sighed in relief and nodded quickly walking over to his bike and getting on. He didn't like lying to his brothers. He felt guilty about it but he also knew he'd feel worse if he went to some meeting to play with guns while Bramty sat in the principles office waiting on someone to come get her and he knew Katherine wasn't gonna do it.

When he walked into the same office he'd been in just last week Happy found the principles door open and Bramty sitting opposite the mads desk waiting for him. The sight almost made him want to cringe at how familiar it was.

Only he was usually the one on trouble.

"Mr. Lowman" the principle greeted with an unimpressed nod as Happy took a seat still not bothering to ask the principles name. "We called you in today because there was an incident at lunch and our school has a zero tolerance of violence"

Happy groaned, he knew that speech and it was the one they gave his Ma every time he had gotten into a physical fight. Looking down at Bramty's hands, her right was wrapped with a splint on her thumb. He knew that injury was from punching someone, hard, and having your thumb tucked in your fist.

"What happened?" he asked with a small sigh

Bramty did exactly what she had done last time, looking straight at him when she explained. "The same punk from last week was bothering us again" she told him with an annoyed huff

Happy nodded, he wouldn't say it in front of the principle in fear of making her case worse but he was damn proud she hit this asshole. He knew she wasn't about to go around hitting people for no reason and so he had confidence that whatever this fucking kid had done warranted her to punch him.

Bramty sighed, "He was pushing the girls again. I wasn't the only one who yelled at him and his friends to stop, he was trying to show off to them. Jane got pushed onto the ground and then he tried to push me too so I punched him in the face... my thumb really hurts though, the nurse said it was fractured" she informed him holding up her hand as proof.

Happy nodded taking her tiny hand in his, inspecting the damage. He knew there had to be power behind that hit since it bruised her knuckles and fractured her thumb. It wasn't a pussy hit that's for sure.

While he didn't like seeing her hurting, he did like knowing she'd protect herself and stick up for her friends no matter the consequences of doing what she had to do.

"Yes, well we don't tolerate violence" the principle cleared his throat

"Well what about the boys?" Happy rasped glaring at the man who was becoming more uncomfortable by the minute.

"He will be suspended for 3 days and so will your daughter Mr. Lowman, both parties who used violence are being punished" the man said curtly

Happy briefly thought about just cursing the man out and maybe threatening him but then he remembered that Bramty didn't need that kind of shit making her life even harder. Cause that's exactly what it would do. Going to a school where the principle has it out for you isn't something Bramty needed cause Happy had a feeling she'd find herself in this office again before the year was out.

She didn't go out of her way to make trouble but she didn't take shit from anybody.

If she was anything like him as a kid - which he could already see she is - then she'd be back.

"Okay" Happy shrugged, there wasn't shit he could do about it and it wasn't like she'd fall behind in class anyway. Since Charming didn't need him, he could just call Tacoma and tell them he needed to spend 3 days with his mom and they'd be fine.

"Right, well you just need to sign her out at the front desk and then you can take her home. Back at school for Monday" the Principle excused then and Happy smirked when Bramty was just as quick as him to jump up out of the chair and head for the door.

Day 1 of suspension.

Happy sat across from Bramty at the table in the hotel room he'd booked since going to the clubhouse wasn't an option and he figured she deserved a break from her mom for three days.

They had been playing poker for a few hours now. Well, it had started out as just card games but she'd been quick to pick them up and start beating him. It was weird having to actually try winning against a child, but Bramty was kind of his best friend/ daughter and so he was more proud than anything else.

They had moved on to poker and since he'd only just explained how it worked to her a few hands ago he knew she didn't even realise she was counting cards. It made him chuckle just watching her face as she tried to figure out all the possible hands he had. The way her brows knit together slightly when she was deciding her move, the way her tongue poked out the side of her mouth when she was concentrating - adorable wasn't a word he ever used but fuck if she wasn't the cutest little kid he'd ever seen.

"Your counting cards" he told her and she looked up at him confused by the term. "It's when your keeping track of the cards that have been dealt and may possibly be dealt again before the next hand" he explained

Bramty nodded, "Wasn't I suppose to do that? how else can I win if I don't know?"

Happy laughed and smiled, "Your not supposed to do that... it's cheating but it don't mean you can't if you hide it well. When you play poker there's gonna be money involved and you wanna win"

Bramty smiled brightly and nodded, "How do I pretend not to be counting the cards then?"

He smirked as he explained it to her, all she had to do was not make it so obvious and she'd be good. He should have figured that she'd be good at counting cards with the way her mind just easily analyses things. He'd never seen something quite like it but she was fucking smart and if she worked on hiding it then nobody would be able to beat her in a game of poker cause she's got a mean poker face.

"Did you see me? did you know?" she asked excitedly after they finished the next hand with her making an effort to hide it.

Happy shook his head, he hadn't been looking for it honestly, cause he knew she was counting them. But he wasn't gonna tell her that.

She beamed and then they changed to a different set of rules.

He'd have to remember never to put money on a game if he played against her because it honestly wasn't a guarantee he'd win... and that didn't happen often.

Day 2 of suspension.

Happy lounged on the bed leaning against the headboard while Bramty laid on her stomach in the opposite direction, both watching the TV in fascination. The new Saw movie had aired and Happy had jumped at the chance to watch it.

At first he was a little unsure if it was something he should be letting Bramty watch and when he'd quickly googled it he realised it was most definitely not something he should be letting her watch but her eyes were glued to the screen already at that point.

"Oh, Hap he's gonna kill that guy" she whispered as if the character would hear her and then it would ruin the fake killing scene most likely to follow this characters bravery in going first down the dark hallway.

He smirked and nodded when she looked over her shoulder at him smiling before turning her attention back to the screen.

It wasn't that he liked watching these movies cause they were interesting or anything, since they all followed the basic plot of a group getting killed off one by one doing stupid cliché shit. It was more the fact he liked criticising the killing and torture scenes, being someone who's done most of those techniques in real life.

It was more funny than scary for him.

Happy made sure to keep an eye on Bramty's reactions cause he'd turn it off if she got scared. But it didn't look like she was anything less than entertained by the poorly acted out movie.

"Happy?" she turned to him "Blood doesn't spray like that in real life, does it?"

He smirked, "Nah. depends on what kind of injury, how close you are, those kinds of things... but not like that. That was just someone behind the camera pouring blood on a wall, it wouldn't look like that in real life" he shook his head realising he may have given more than she wanted to know in that answer.

Happy looked at her and she nodded accepting what he'd said with a shrug before taking another red vine to eat while she watched the movie again. He couldn't help but laugh a little at that.

Kozik would be a little pissed he watched the movie without him since they'd watched all the other Saw movies together, both equally amused by them. But Happy couldn't find it in him to care at the moment.

He liked watching movies with Bramty more than he does Kozik.

Bramty sighed and crawled up the bed coming to curl into his side with the bag of red vines. She took one out of the packet and handed it to him before focusing on the movie.

He was more than impressed when she didn't flinch or jump at the jump scares. It was like she knew it was fake and so it didn't bother her, though he didn't plan on letting her see any real violence again.

Not if he could help it.

Day 3 of suspension.

"No, thumb outside your fist remember?" he reminded her for the second time since they'd started this. Bramty's thumb and whole hand had healed up already and Happy was taking the opportunity to show her the correct form to fight in.

He knew most of it was instinct and she'd definitely had a fighters instinct so he wasn't too worried about her not being able to protect herself but at least this way she'd do it with the least amount of damage to herself.

Happy held up his hands, palms flat in the air "Okay go again" he nodded watching as she punched both his palms with her right hand and then did the same with her left.

He had to admit she was good at it and with some actual training she could be a really great fighter. The sparkle in her eye and the fact she had some good power behind those punches automatically, really was something impressive.

Happy knew it had to be in her DNA, this kid was pure outlaw through and through. Either her mother had connections to an outlaw that he didn't know about or her birth father did. Cause Bramty is pure outlaw if he'd ever seen it. No way that wasn't in her blood.

"Like that?" she grinned up at him and he nodded, his palms actually starting to hurt a little as he braced himself to take the hits. Her fists might be small but he could tell if she was looking to cause damage that she would do just that.

"Yeah baby girl, your fucking good at this already... gonna be a fighter, tough as nails, strong" he nodded approvingly and she beamed up at him with a small giggle.

They spent the rest of the day after lunch and ice cream learning and practicing how to deflect and dodge hits. In Happy's opinion it was just as important as being able to hit if not more.

As he threw gentle punches her way he made sure that if she didn't get out of the way fast enough none of them would actually hurt her. It was weird training like this with someone so small when he was used to doing this in the ring with his brothers instead.

Bramty had the advantage of being small which made it easy for her to jump and twist out of the way to avoid getting hit. She did it all the while giggling like this was the most fun thing she'd ever done in her life and he couldn't help but laugh along with her.

Years ago if anyone had told him he'd be having fun teaching a 6 year old girl to fight he'd probably of stabbed them just for suggesting it. But now, well now, he couldn't care less cause he liked hanging out with his baby girl.

It may be someone else's fighting outlaw DNA in her but she was his daughter whether or not she realised it.

To say he was not looking forward to heading back to Tacoma tomorrow was an understatement!
