Welcome you all to Black and Blue! I'm trying something a little different from the usual, for this is a oneshot. This takes place in an AU where Sonic and Shadow are siblings.
That is all. Enjoy!
The first thing Amy Rose saw when she she entered the frontyard of the Hedgehog residence was a pair of blurs speeding dangerously close to her position. Amy yelped and instinctively ducked out of the way as the two maddened entities, one blue and one black, sped past her and proceeded to bounce in all different directions and collide into different things but mainly into each other.
"What the-" she cried out in confusion before the sound of a loud smacking noise rang out and a very familiar blue blur had collided into the wall of the house itself, revealing it to be a certain cerulean hedgehog with green eyes. The blue hedgehog coughed loudly, his eyes darting around in their sockets.
"Sonic?" muttered Amy, more to herself than the male hedgehog. Sonic had definitely heard her, however, for the azure Mobian turned to the pinkette, confusion etched onto his face.
"Amy?" Sonic asked, watching as the girl slowly got up, "What are you doi-"
The hedgehog didn't get to finish his sentence, for he had been roundhouse kicked in the side and sent flying. Amy turned in alarm towards the direction in which he soared uncontrollably before turning back and meeting the scarlet gaze of Shadow The Hedgehog.
"Rose." uttered the striped Mobian, similarly perplexed as to her arrival but his utterance sounding much more like a statement than a question.
The pink hedgehog minutely nodded, and Shadow glanced in the direction of his blue sibling- who had already touched down on the snow-covered ground and was taking steps to regain his footing- before focusing again on her. "To what do we owe the pleasure?"
"I'm.. Just making a friendly visit," responded Amy, readjusting her scarf, "Want to clue me in on why you're both trying to kill each other?"
Sonic smirked, having risen to a standing position. "Big bro here is just being more stubborn than usual."
Shadow growled and made to snappily retort, but then Sonic had lunged at him, the two hedgehogs crashing to the floor as they engaged in a tussle.
"Make yourself at home, Ames!" Sonic called out, "Tails is in there too, and he could -oof- use the company!"
Amy shook her head in disbelief before walking up the steps that led to the front door, turning the knob and tentatively opening the door.
"Tails?" she asked, peeking into the living room. It had a homely look to it, with some furniture, a flatscreen-television showing the evening news, and a video game console and a quartet of controllers. She also noticed the twin-tailed fox sitting on the sofa whilst huddled around a cup of hot chocolate.
"Amy?" came Miles -or Tails, as his friends called him- who for the third time that day, asked what she was doing in the house, to which she succinctly replied her intention of a simple visit.
"What was that all about, by the way?" she inquired, shutting the door behind her. At Tails' confused look, she bobbed her head towards the sibling fight going on outside.
"Oh." Said Miles, nodding in understanding. "They had an argument over who got to pick the games on the controller, then it devolved into a fight of egos and I had to basically kick them out when it became literal to prevent them from tearing down the house."
The fox sighed. "Seriously, Sonic fights with Shadow almost as bad as he does with Knuckles..."
The pink hedgehog set down her mittens and wondered if this was what having a sibling was like. Sure, she had Cream, who was the closest thing she had to a sister, but it wasn't the same.
Also, she would have argued against the last sentence if she hadn't seen Sonic and Knuckles fight. To put it this way, the level of damage caused was usually much bigger and so were the bruises Sonic sported after each battle. It didn't help that once upon a time, Knuckles had legitimately been trying to kill the hedgehog, when Robotnik had tricked him all those years ago.
The pink hedgehog lightly patted the exasperated kit on the back before sitting down to watch some television.
"Your injuries are your own fault." said Shadow, holding a Chaos Emerald that was previously tucked into his quills as his bruises slowly and surely healed. After finally calling it quits and entering the house, Tails had treated the worst of the striped one's cuts -the fox, bless his heart, had insisted to give proper medical attention to the bruises and cuts the two brawlers had recieved-, and was now tending to Sonic's.
"My fault? This -ow- wouldn't have happened if you weren't so obstinate!" retorted the younger sibling.
"Shadow's kinda right, Sonic."
Sonic sent him a betrayed look.
"Et tu, Brute?"
The kitsune, being pretty much done with everything at this point, rolled his eyes. "You did rile him up unnecessarily."
"That wouldn't be the first time." jabbed Shadow.
"Hey!" said Sonic.
"-And you're not exactly in a position to talk about stubbornness." The kit finished, like they hadn't spoken.
Amy hummed in agreeance with that last bit, and Sonic turned his betrayed expression to her.
"You -ouch- too?!"
Tails gave his best friend a look that clearly communicated "suck it up" and the hedgehog grumbled to himself, occasionally hissing as the fox finished tending to the wounds of his friend.
Shadow just smirked to himself.
When all was said and done, Tails had put away the first aid kit he had brought out, and all four were watching television. Besides some light conversation about their other friends, the weather, and recent experiences, the living room was mostly quiet.
"...Alright, who's up for a game night?"
Tails, Amy, and surprisingly even Shadow communicated affirmatives and Sonic clasped his gloved hands.
"Great! I'll get the controllers."
Once the hedgehog had set up, they -after no small amount of arguing- had agreed on a four-player racing game. The game allowed for car customization, so Shadow had chosen black, Sonic chose blue, Tails yellow, and Amy pink.
After the countdown ended and the cars sped off, Shadow had taken the lead with Sonic close behind him. Still further behind the competing hedgehogs was Tails and Amy, who were steadily gaining on the spiky duo.
"You may have gotten Player 1, Shads, but you'll still be eating my dust soon enough!" boasted Sonic.
"I doubt it, and don't call me that." replied Shadow, drifting past a corner as Tails and Amy's cars caught up to the two.
Tails quickly drifted past the others, taking second place as the yellow car threatened to take Shadow's lead. The fox mentally punched the air victoriously as he tapped a button and his car boosted past Shadow, who exhaled in slight irritation.
"Yeah!" exclaimed Tails, right before smirking at the striped one. "Who's your daddy, Shadow?"
He was probably going to regret saying that, but what the heck.
"What the he-" Shadow cut himself off as Sonic burst out laughing and Amy tried and failed to stifle her giggles. "You've been spending too much time around Sonic."
Tails' smirk widened but his celebration was cut off when something slammed into his car, making it topple over as the game proclaimed his car a wreck. The fox stared, dumbfounded..
Only to notice Sonic's too wide grin.
"Seriously, Sonic?" breathed Tails in frustration. The hedgehog just smirked and wagged his finger, steering his car with one hand as it went up a ramp.
"That makes us even, bud!"
"Even?!"
"Maybe it's because you sided with Shadow while you were patching them up...?" suggested Amy mirthfully, as she kept pace with the others.
Miles just huffed as his car respawned.
The minutes ran by and Shadow had a pretty dominant lead for the rest of the first lap. It was in the second and final lap that his lead started to falter, as Sonic had managed to pass him at the final stretch before the finish line.
As the finish line got closer, the hedgehog got cocky.
"Aaaaaaand I win again! What did I tell you about eating my dust-"
His victory boast was interrupted when a certain yellow car smacked into his, wrecking his vehicle.
In the end, Tails stole the victory from him, landing at first place, which had Shadow clocking in at second and Amy taking third, leaving a dumbfounded hedgehog to scrape his jaw off of the floor as Tails passed him to the finish line.
Tails and Amy were in hysterics, and even Shadow smirked at his younger brother's humiliation.
"Yeah, yeah, laugh it up." grumbled Sonic, as they were taken to the selection screen again.
The guests agreed to spend the night at the house, and the quartet spent the night playing video games and eating snacks. After a dinner consisting of a large platter of admittedly delicious looking chilli dogs -for that was ususally the result when Sonic decided to be in charge of the cooking-, they had all decided to call it a day and hit the hay, with Amy staying in a guest room and Tails staying in a room that the Hedgehog brothers had reserved for him -for he visited the residence semi-frequently.
The next day, the fox entered the living room to see Shadow putting on his hover skates. Miles greeted him good morning, to which Shadow grunted in appreciation.
"Where to?"
"GUN needs me on a mission."
Tails nodded. "And Sonic?"
Shadow paused and looked at the kit. "Sonic's at the Station Square Cemetery."
Miles' eyes widened in realization and he sent the hedgehog a knowing look, which he returned.
Silver was the youngest of the hedgehog brothers. Tails had interacted with him some times before, and the youngest hedgehog was an optimistic yet realistic fellow who was a fan of all things time-travel and carried with him that overpowering sense of justice that his older brothers had. He was also a friendly, inviting one, who in a way reminded Miles of Sonic, just without the cockiness.
Together, somewhat of a friendship had developed between the two, and Miles still had good memories of the hedgehog: games they played, getting thrown for a loop by his telekinesis.. And the kit knew that Sonic had even more good memories of the younger hedgehog.
It had all gone awry when Mephiles came on the scene.
Pretending to be a time-traveler who wanted to protect the safety to the world, Mephiles was a lying nillihist who had subtly manipulated everyone to do his bidding, and had even gotten Silver to attempt to kill Sonic, convincing the white hedgehog that the cerulean one was the "Ibilis Trigger" and would doom them all. Thankfully, Amy had snapped him out of it, which was one of the reasons Sonic was still alive today.
It all came to head when Mephiles announced his true intentions, which was to fuse with a creature named Ibilis and erase the timeline for the fun of it. With that thought ringing in heads of everyone, Mephiles had shot a Chaos-powered beam at Sonic, aiming to kill. Only Silver reacted in time, pushing his brother out of way. Sadly, the hedgehog was impaled clean through by the blast, and...
There was nothing anyone could do.
They made sure to avenge their fallen brother, as Sonic and Shadow used the Chaos Emeralds to attain their Super states, and Mephiles was put down very quickly after that. Silver was buried in the Station Square Cemetery, and while Sonic seemed relatively fine to an untrained eye, Miles knew that his best friend blamed himself for it all.
"Oh." said the fox a bit helplessly. Shadow just nodded before walking out of the room, and Miles busied himself with finding something to tinker with.
Later that day, Miles had approached Sonic in the hedgehog's room.
"Hey." greeted the kit, recieving another "hey" in response.
"I.. heard you went to see him today." said Miles, unsure of how to approach the subject. The azure hedgehog however, just replied with a yes.
"Wanna talk about it?" he asked. Sonic paused, and the kit continued. "You don't have to if you don't want to."
The hedgehog didn't say anything for a while, but just before the kitsune thought he wouldn't say anything he spoke up.
"I can't help but think it's my fault. It's my fault that he's..."
The hedgehog trailed off and Tails put a hand on Sonic's shoulder. "It wasn't your fault, Sonic. If it's anyone's fault, it's Mephiles'."
"You don't get it." argued Sonic, raising his voice slightly. "I'm supposed to be the fastest thing alive; I should have reacted quicker instead of standing there like a sitting duck!"
"Look, we were taken by surprise- Nobody could've reacted in time. Maybe not even you."
Before Sonic could say anything else, Miles continued, "No one is going to blame you for that. Silver wouldn't blame you for that."
The hedgehog paused and stared the fox in the eye before reluctantly deflating.
"I guess so..."
Tails smiled, as the two best friends sat on the bed in silence.
Mission Accomplished.
