Alright, guys... I forgot to say this in this last chapter (I know I'm terrible), but I want you guys to try and guess what the subtle clues are in each chapter. Some will be obvious and from the movie, a couple may be made up. Whoever gets it right first will be mentioned in the next chapter's AN! Also, try to guess yesterday's as well; I'm curious to see if anyone got it ;D
Day 3- This is a Restaurant Now?
Beca,
There's this brand new breakfast restaurant opening called the Three French Hens. Ironically enough, today is the first day it's open. Follow the directions included in this envelope, and there's a table already reserved for you. The bill is already paid as well. Enjoy your breakfast!
P.S. Don't stop looking for clues!
"This is a restaurant now?" Beca asks herself as she rereads the note that was left on her doorstep for the third time this morning. Sighing, she grabs her phone and dials Chloe's number. "Hey Chloe, wanna get breakfast?"
"Um… sure?"
"Wow, you sound as if you don't want to spend time with me." She rolls her eyes, her voice laced with sarcasm. She presses her phone to her ear with her shoulder as she pulls on a pair of black dress pants.
"I'm going to be with you all day, moron." Chloe's laugh fills her ear, making Beca's stomach flip at the sound.
"I know, but we're not going to be having that much fun." Her voice turns serious at the end, and Chloe stops laughing.
"I know, I'm sorry. Yeah, I'll get breakfast with you." After a second, she adds, "but you're paying."
"Good thing I'm really really really rich. But it's already paid for. " She snorts in response.
"Yeah, you can buy things for me. And that's nice." Chloe laughs again, all seriousness gone. "Do you want me to meet you at the restaurant, or at your place?"
"The restaurant is fine, I'll text you the directions. You're gonna laugh so hard at the name, dude." Beca chuckles. "See you soon?"
"Yeah. I love you."
"I love you too." Once she hangs up, Beca lets out a soft sigh. Those three words kill her every time, but it's not like she can ask her to stop saying it without Chloe getting suspicious.
She pulls on a black button-up shirt and a white cardigan, then grabs her coat, wallet, and phone. She quickly feeds her turtles some celery (she still has to get regular food for them) before stepping out of the house and making her way to the restaurant. She quickly sends Chloe the address before making her own way there, immensely relieved when she realizes the place is only down the street.
When she walks into Three French Hens, (after rolling her eyes at the insanely huge sign of three french hens outside), Chloe stands up and waves her over to a booth in the corner of the building. Beca's heart beats slightly faster when she takes in her appearance; she's wearing a simple, yet elegant, fitted black dress with spaghetti straps, and her hair is pulled back into a simple bun.
"How are you not freezing?" Is all Beca can think of to say when Chloe pulls her in for a hug.
"Oh, I am. This is the only black dress I have though, and I didn't want to go to the mall."
"Here." Beca shrugs her cardigan off and hands it to Chloe. She starts to shake her head, so she adds, "I insist. It would look really bad if you died in my care, Beale."
"Fine." Chloe huffs and takes the clothing, sliding it on before sitting back down. "How weird is it that there's a restaurant with the name 'Three French Hens?'"
Beca chortles as she picks up the menu in front of her. "Right? My secret admirer called it ironic." She glances back up at Chloe, who's still looking at her. "What if they bought this restaurant and changed the name just for this day?"
Chloe rolls her eyes at Beca's question. "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard come out of your mouth, and you once said you were going to go back in time and kiss Leonardo DiCaprio back when he was younger."
"Hey!" Beca immediately protests, whacking Chloe's arm. "Young Leo was hot and you know it!"
"Yeah, true." Chloe sighs dramatically. "I can't say you're wrong, sadly."
"You just don't like admitting I'm right." She gives her a smug grin, and Chloe shakes her head.
"Whatever, Mitchell." Beca's phone buzzes against her thigh, and she pulls it out, laughing at the text.
Hey weirdo, long time no see. Halston and I are having a Christmas party this weekend. Come. Bring that hot redhead of yours.
"Oh my God." Beca shakes her head.
"Who is it?"
"Don't freak out on me?" Chloe nods, so Beca continues, "Zac Efron. He just invited us to a party."
"Wait, us?" She asks excitedly, bouncing a little. "He invited me? I mean, you made a movie with him, so I'm not surprised, but me?"
"Chloe, chill out." Beca laughs, then shows Chloe the text. "You're the only redhead I know, so…"
"HE CALLED ME HOT!" Chloe screams out, and Beca quickly shoves a hand over her mouth.
"Dude, oh my God!" She screeches under her breath, and she feels Chloe's lips lift into a grin against the palm of her hand. "Shut up!" She mumbles something against her hand, and she slowly moves it.
"Are you jealous, Beca?" Chloe challenges, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Uh, no. He called me a weirdo, it's clearly never going to happen." Beca rolls her eyes.
"That's not what I meant." Chloe leans closer to Beca, resting both elbows on the table in front of her. "He called me hot."
"I'm not following, Chlo." She lies, trying her hardest not to allow her eyes to drift down to her chest- and failing. It should be illegal how hot this girl is, Beca can't help but think.
"Oh my- nevermind." She shakes her head, leaning back in her chair again. "You're really oblivious, did you know that?"
"Yes." Beca deadpans as she grabs her phone again. "So I assume you want to go to this thing? Because you don't have to if you don't want to."
"Uh, are you stupid?" Chloe squeals. "Of course I want to go!"
"Cool." We'll be there.
Awesome, is Chloe freaking out? Zac responds with a winky emoji.
Yup. Wait, you remembered her name?
Duh, she's all you ever talk about. You should ask her out. Another winky emoji.
Fuck you, Efron.
You didn't deny it though.
I'm turning my phone off now.
See ya Saturday! Another winky emoji, followed by three pink heart emojis.
"What has you grinning like an idiot?" Chloe asks once Beca sets her phone back down.
"Efron being an idiot."
"You do know he has a girlfriend, right?" She raises her eyebrows at the brunette, who slaps her arm again.
"Oh my gosh, yes I do. I met her on set, actually. She's sweet. Did you see that movie 'Before I Fall?'"
"I did, why?"
"She's nothing like her character, Lindsay."
"Oh." Before the conversation can change, a waiter walks up to them.
"Sorry for the wait, ladies. Today has been super busy. Can I get you anything to drink?" His eyes widen when they land on Beca. "Oh my gosh."
"Hey…" She glances at his nametag. "Max?" He nods. "I'll give you an autograph right now if you promise not to tell anyone I'm here." For extra measure, she adds, "And I will sue you if the paparazzi shows up, ok?"
"Beca!" Chloe exclaims, but the waiter waves her off.
"I-it's fine. I get it." Beca represses an eye roll, but grabs a napkin.
"Can I see your pen?" She asks, and he hands it to her. She writes The Big BM on it and hands it to him with her signature smirk. "Can I get a hot chocolate, please?"
"Coming right up. And for you, ma'am?" He turns to Chloe, who is still glaring at Beca.
"Water, please." She says curtly, and he nods before walking off. "Really, Beca?"
"What?!"
"You threatened to sue him!" Chloe's glare softens a little. "Are you ok, Beca? Really ok?"
She sighs, running a hand through her hair. "I don't know." She looks up at Chloe. "Everything is just so stressful right now. First, with this album, then with Jesse…" another sigh. "Now I have to figure out who this secret admirer is, which is like the icing on the cake."
"Oh Beca, I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize, it's not like it's your fault." She mumbles. Chloe lays a hand on Beca's upper arm, and Beca gives her a pathetic excuse for a smile. "I'm sorry, I have no reason to be whining right now."
"You have plenty of reasons. One of your best friends just passed away." Her voice turns sympathetic. "Maybe you should take a break from work."
"No way in hell, Chlo." Beca whispers. "I have to release this album. It's the last one before-" She clamps a hand over her mouth as Chloe's eyes widen.
"It's the last one before what?"
"Promise not to tell anyone?" Chloe nods. "After I release this album, I'm going back to producing."
"But why? Don't you love to perform?"
"I mean, I guess." Beca lets out a huff of air. "But I would much rather make the music than sing it."
"Does Theo know?" Chloe asks, and her expression turns to one of delighted shock when Beca laughs.
"Fuck no. He's going to be pissed though, that's for sure." She grins at the redhead in front of her. "And I'm sorry I threatened that guy."
"It's fine." They both fall silent, and Chloe turns bright red when she realizes she's still rubbing Beca's upper arm. She quickly pulls away and looks down, making Beca miss the contact.
"I'm going to sign Emily." She blurts out, and Chloe looks up at her again in shock. "I'm going to give her the career she deserves. It should be her singing on stage, not me. That's why I produced the last song on the album. I know Theo is going to make me sing it though, and he's going to do a mediocre job producing compared to mine."
"Ego much?" Chloe laughs, and Beca rolls her eyes.
"Biggest of them all, you know that." She shoots a wink her way, making the older woman laugh again.
"A hot chocolate for you, miss, and a water for you." Max, the waiter, returns and places their beverages in front of them. "My manager let me know that your meal, Miss Mitchell, is already paid for. Your friend, however…"
"I'll pay for it." Beca says before Chloe can even open her mouth. "You literally told me to earlier, Beale."
"I was kidding!" She exclaims, and Beca shakes her head.
"Whatever."

"So, this is the place?" Both Bellas look around at the scenery in front of them. It's a simple cemetery, with not a soul in sight. There are a few trees, and most of the snow has been swept aside so people can walk and actually see the gravestones. "Why was he even buried in New York?"
"He was born here, in New York City." Beca replies, getting out of the taxi that escorted them there. "I called his mom, and she said he wanted to be where the rest of his family is." Her voice wavers a little.
"That's sweet." Chloe responds quietly, also getting out of the car. Beca pays for the ride, and they watch it disappear. "Are you ready?"
She lets out a nervous laugh. "Hell no." With a shake of her head, she continues, "but I don't think I ever will be, you know?"
"I understand." The ginger nods. "I remember when my dad died. I was fifteen." She doesn't look at Beca as she says this, but takes the brunette's hand in hers with a soft squeeze.
"Your dad passed away?" Beca asks in confusion, her voice causing Chloe to look over at her. "How come you never told me this?"
She shrugs, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I never told anyone, not even Aubrey. It was too difficult. I still can't talk about it without crying, and it's been 13 years already." She wipes her cheek as a tear falls. "God, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make today about me."
"No, no. Chloe, it's ok." Immediately, Beca reaches up and wipes her tears with the pad of her thumb. "Don't ever apologize for talking to me about something as important as that, ok?" She doesn't respond, and Beca sighs. "Look. I know I'm not the best at this, but I've learned from experience that you can't just keep this bottled up inside of you. One day, it's all going to come bursting out, and trust me, you don't want that. You end up losing the most important things in life."
"We don't want that, now do we?" Chloe laughs shakily, reaching up to grab the hand that's still on her face and intertwining their fingers. "Thank you, Becs."
Beca shrugs, secretly proud at how nonchalant it comes off as. "You're welcome. What are best friends for, right?" She playfully shoves her hip into Chloe's, who laughs again, only this time it's a little more genuine. "And hey."
"Yeah?"
"You'll never lose me, ok?" Without warning, Chloe grabs her in a bone-crushing hug, pushing the air right out of Beca's lungs. "Beale, can't breathe."
"Sorry, I just," she pulls away, "I love you. You know that, right?"
Deciding to play off her pounding heart as a joke, she winks at her with an, "Oh, I know. How could I not?"
"You're a fucking idiot." Chloe rolls her eyes and links her arm with hers.
"But I'm your idiot." She responds, her eyes widening as soon as she realizes what she's said.
"That… was possibly the corniest thing I've ever heard." The ginger simply laughs, and she lets out a sigh of relief, exhaling the breath she wasn't aware she was holding until now.
"Today only." She looks back to the cemetery, the dread in her stomach multiplying with each lingering look. "Let's go." They step foot in the cemetery, arms still linked.
"Do you know where it is?" Beca shakes her head at the question. "Let's split up and look, then." Chloe pulls her arm out of Beca's. "I'll go that way." She walks off to the right, and Beca sighs again before heading to the left.
Her stomach drops more and more as she reads each name and date on the tombstones she passes. She sees a "Jesse Swanburgher," and she has to reread the name three times before she realizes it's not his.
"Beca, I found it." Chloe's voice calls out softly.
"I'm coming." But Beca doesn't move. She tells herself to move, but her feet stay rooted to the ground. Come on Mitchell, get a grip! She tells herself in frustration, but her feet still don't move an inch.
"Becs." Suddenly, Chloe's right behind her, wrapping her arms around Beca's shoulders. Beca leans back into her for support. "You can do this."
"Yeah." Chloe releases all but her hand, gently tugging her as she starts walking to the tombstone. "You've got this."
"I-" her voice cuts off when Chloe stops, and she looks at the tombstone in front of her, not really reading any of it. The only part her brain actually notices is that there's a treble clef and music notes swirling around the letters and numbers.
"Always live your worst as if it's your best." Chloe reads out, her voice the only thing bringing Beca back to the present. "That's beautiful. And so Jesse."
"Do you think he's proud of me?" Beca asks, surprising both Chloe and herself. "You know, my music?"
"Of course he is. He's probably jamming to some of it right now, thinking, 'man, I should put this in a movie'."
Beca gives Chloe a sheepish grin, feeling the tears forming in her eyes again. "Yeah, you're probably right. He was such a weirdo." Her voice cracks, and she reaches up to wipe a tear away. "The only person I've ever met that even slightly compares to how weird he was is you." She laughs a broken, sad laugh that both women know is forced.
"I'm going to take that as a compliment." Chloe smiles softly, her gaze still on the tombstone in front of her. "Did you want to say anything, to Jesse?"
"Uh, sure." Beca nods. "Can I have a minute?"
"Yeah." She kisses her on the cheek, then says, "I'll be right by the fountain." Beca looks around until she finds it, then nods.
"Ok." She watches until Chloe sits down on the edge of the fountain, pulling her phone out. "Hey, Jesse." She facepalms at the awkwardness of her words. "That was bad, ignore that."
"I miss you." Her voice cracks, but she keeps going. "I know I'm typically this closed-off, get out of my face kind of person, but you always managed to bring that out of me. You were the first guy I ever fell in love with. You were my first boyfriend, my first real relationship. And I never really believed what all those movies and books said, but I've realized now they're right; that kind of love doesn't ever go away. Even though I may not love you romantically anymore, Jess, I still love you. I always will."
"I'm not sure if you're secretly watching me up there- and you probably are- but in case you haven't been, someone's trying to get me to guess who they are as my secret admirer. If you have any hints, tips, or guesses, I'd love to hear them." She jokes. "This is actually exactly the kind of thing you'd love."
"I'm just really confused; I don't know how you fell for me, let alone someone else. I'm this abrasive, sarcastic, annoying person who doesn't easily let people in. Yet, you got past that, and apparently someone else has too. I just wish I knew who." In a whisper, she adds, "I wish it was who I want it to be, but there's no way it is." She risks a glance over at Chloe, who's looking the opposite direction and has her phone to her ear. "So I'll just keep pining over her from a distance."
"Work isn't too terrible, but it's not great, either. I haven't been sleeping all that well, and it's a huge relief that I'm going to quit singing soon. Well, not permanently, but you know what I mean, right?" She facepalms again when she waits for an answer. "Right. You can't answer my stupid questions anymore. That's another thing I'm going to miss about you." She lets out a soft laugh. "Anyway, I'm going to sign Emily once I go back to producing. If there's anyone in the world that deserves it, it's her. Her music is amazing- again, you know this."
"So yeah, that's my life since you've been gone." She chuckles at the unintentional song reference. "I miss you, dude. Like, a lot." She looks up at Chloe again, who this time is looking over at her. She waves her over, and Chloe gives her a small smile when she makes her way over.
"Did you say everything you needed to?" Beca nods. "Do you mind if I say something?" She asks timidly, and Beca nods again. "Ok."
"Hey, Jesse, it's Chloe. I know we never talked all that much, but it feels like I really know you, what with how much Beca rambled about you in college." Beca whacks her arm, blushing with embarrassment, and Chloe laughs. "What? It's true." The brunette sticks her tongue out at her. "Anyway, I just wanted to say that we're going to miss you. You were definitely a super nice, fun, caring guy to be around, and we need more people like you on this planet. Rest in peace, Jesse Swanson."
"Ready to get out of here?" Beca asks, and Chloe nods. "I'll call Uber." She pulls out her phone and calls the company, ordering their ride. "She'll be here soon."
"Ok." They sit down on the edge of the sidewalk and think in silence while they wait for the car to get to the cemetery. Beca's mind wanders back and forth from her favorite memories with Jesse to her favorite memories with Chloe. Oddly enough, she realizes, they're almost exactly the same, Jesse and Chloe. Sure, Jesse was a little more practical than Chloe, but they both have that glowy, happy-go-lucky attitude about them. They both have that sort of aura around them that you can't hate, no matter how hard you try.
"Beca." Chloe's voice pulls her out of her thoughts, and she looks up to see her standing up and holding a hand out to her. "Are we going to go, or sit here all day?" She teases.
Beca reaches up and takes her hand, allowing her to pull her up. "Let's get the fuck out of here." They slide into the back of the Uber, and Chloe grins when they hear that 95.7 is on.
"Now here's a song I'm willing to bet a lot of you guys haven't heard in a really long time." The radio guy announces, and Beca and Chloe look over at each other in amused shock as "Titanium" starts playing.
"Oh my gosh, can we turn this off?" Beca whines, but Chloe immediately protests.
"No! Don't listen to her!"
"Alright…" the driver just laughs and turns the radio up, making Beca groan in anguish.
"Don't get freaky on me, Beale." She warns, and the ginger sends her a very suggestive wink.
"I'll try not to."
Beca just rolls her eyes, knowing she doesn't really mean it. "You're so weird."
"Thanks!"
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"Hey, thanks again for today." Beca gives Chloe a soft smile.
"Anytime Becs." Chloe pulls her in for another hug, and Beca breathes in her scent as they embrace, immediately feeling her muscles relax. "I'll talk to you tomorrow, ok?"
"Yeah." She pulls away, looking up into Chloe's soft blue eyes. "Hey, Chloe?"
"What's up?" Her lips pull up into a lopsided grin.
"I love you." She whispers, and her eyes widen as she realizes what she's just said. Sure, they say it all the time, but normally Chloe says it first. Not her, ever.
To her relief, Chloe laughs and pulls her into another loose hug. "I love you too, Becs."
"Goodnight, Chlo." She pulls away to look at her.
"'Night, Beca." She presses a quick kiss to her cheek, then turns and walks away. Beca watches her walk away until she turns the corner, absent-mindedly rubbing her cheek where Chloe kissed her.
