Yuzu was currently dying of happiness. She had been bursting with nerves to ask Mei on a date, and now that she got it out of her system- Mei said yes!- she felt like a dozen strings had been cut from her body. The immediate stress melted away, leaving behind a feeling of floating on air.
She exhaled shakily, grinning madly into her hands. She felt great, as if nothing could possibly ruin this moment for her!
"'Playing hard to get, the art of keeping mystery in your relationship,'" Mei read aloud from Yuzu's notebook.
'Oh dear god.'
Her floating spirit plummeted back into her body which was a constant sea of mortification when it came to romance. She peeked from between her fingers to see Mei was giving her a prolonged glance after reading that sentence, one that spoke a million encrypted words.
"What?" Yuzu squeaked defensively. How come all of her well-laid plans ended up sounding dumb when Mei said it out loud? A crime!
"Where did you dig up that advice?" Mei asked as she picked up a red pen from her desk that she usually reserved for grading.
"Eh? A magazine…"
"Burn it immediately." Mei was crossing something out in the notebook.
Yuzu balked at the idea. "Hah? Why?"
Critical eyes continued to sweep the pages. "I already spend enough time deciphering what ridiculous things go on in your head without you doing it intentionally."
Yuzu's eyebrows went up in disbelief at that. "You're one to talk…"
"Magazine. Fire. Today."
Yuzu groaned and flopped back onto the bed. Maybe if she ignored her, she could pretend her great lovelove operation to be together with Mei was never discovered by the very person she did not want reading it.
But Mei wasn't nearly done. "'How to text your crush, a comprehensive guide to love language'? I don't own a phone, Yuzu, that wouldn't apply."
Yuzu's muffled voice spoke up from the pillow she had buried her burning face in. "I just liked the love language part!"
Mei hummed and made a note in the book about communication. She continued after a beat. "'How to cook aphrodisiac foods and improve your sex life.'"
Yuzu whimpered into her pillow, also pulling sheets over her head.
The rest of that section Mei must've read to herself, because her only comment was, "Interesting."
Yuzu knew what was on the very next page and prayed her mutant genes would activate, hoping for some sort of fireball power that would allow her to destroy the damning notebook.
Mei opened her mouth and Yuzu focused her mind. Sadly, no fireball flew from her fingertips to save her.
"'Hitting all her erogenous zones, tips to being the best lover you could be'…" Mei trailed off and Yuzu wished her spirit to leave her body. Then Mei said something that Yuzu wasn't sure she heard right.
"If it helps, I don't think you need assistance in that area."
Yuzu was still for a few seconds before her head popped out from the bunched up sheets. "Did I hear you right, Mei?"
"I didn't say anything," Mei replied smoothly. Yuzu pouted at those words. Did she imagine that?
Mei flipped through the pages. "You put a lot of work into this."
Yuzu sighed in tiredness. She couldn't take anymore embarrassment tonight. "I just don't wanna screw up this chance you've given me…"
She missed the fond glance Mei sent her way. "If only you put that same effort into your studies."
"Yeah yeah," Yuzu uttered, closing her eyes. She felt the bed dip as Mei sat on the bed next to her.
"'First dates should be open, yet intimate. Going out for a walk or a picnic would be great ways of getting to know each other in comfortable environments. And most importantly, don't try to be something you're not,'" Mei recited the words from the final page with a careful tongue. Yuzu felt the book being placed next to her and hesitantly opened her eyes to peer up at Mei.
Mei was starting to settle herself in the bed, preparing to sleep. "I look forward to our date," she said quietly, rolling over with her back facing the blonde. Yuzu hugged the notebook to her chest and hoped that death by happiness was a slow process.
