Part I
x . . . . x
Kuroo flinched when Kenma's bony elbow dug into his side sharply.
"What was that for?" He gritted out, lips pursing from the pain, a hand rubbing the sore spot.
Kenma looked up from his game for just a moment to cut his gaze across the hall to the young woman standing at the edge of the entrance to the lockers. She was being waved at by fellow classmates as they walked by, opening umbrellas as they went. She was looking at her phone and whatever she saw made her cheeks puff out in frustration.
"I don't think she has an umbrella." Kenma intoned before looking back down at the hand held.
Kuroo arched a brow and took note of the downpour that had started a little more than an hour ago. The sky rumbled distantly and it was steadily growing darker. More students waved their goodbyes to her and Kuroo brought a hand to his chin thoughtfully.
Kagome Higurashi was easily one of the prettiest and sweetest girls in school. He was surprised that no one was offering to walk with her home or even offer to get her an umbrella. She was friendly with both the girls and boys in various grades with an easy personality and easier smile that was genuine whenever she spoke to people. She had many students smitten with her... and Kuroo was not ashamed to say he was one of them.
He had come across her several times since she was in the same class as Kenma. They were on semi-friendly terms - friendly enough to be able to call her by her given name at least.
Kenma hummed, "You should offer to take her to the station. From what I remember, she doesn't live that close."
Kuroo couldn't stop the crimson from suffusing his cheeks if he wanted to as he balked at his friend, "Me? Why me?"
"You like her... don't you? Or would you prefer she walk in the rain? Better yet, would you rather someone else walking her?" Kenma looked back at the girl and Kuroo followed his line of sight. He was surprised to see another third year working up the courage to come and talk to her, yellow umbrella in hand. The third year was behind her so she had not seen him yet but the idea of someone else sharing an umbrella with her made his heart skip and not in the fun way either.
Kuroo scoffed and yanked his black umbrella from his bag. Kenma hid a knowing smile as his friend stalked toward the young woman with all the grace of the cat that Nekoma was known for.
He smothered a chuckle when the taller boy shouldered passed the third year, not sparing him a glance.
.
The one day she didn't look at the weather and it was pouring outside.
Kagome sighed and tucked a lock of inky hair behind her ear. She watched as dozens of other students started to make their trek into the downpour, umbrellas at the ready. Some called out to her as they passed and she lifted her hand back to wave goodbye to her peers. The sky was pitch black and the rain was coming down harshly. A light sprinkle and she would have braved it to the subway but today she had her laptop with her and in the heavy rain fall it would get soaked easily.
She made a sound of annoyance and pulled out her phone to pull up her weather app to see how long the downpour would last. She groaned and tilted her head back, refraining from letting lose a sour curse. It was slated to last well into the night. She sighed as she debated in her next steps. Her family didn't have a car and Shippo wasn't in town to save her today.
Kagome's thoughts were interrupted by a throat clearing behind her and she turned to see Kenma's friend Kuroo. There was a grin curling his lips upward and she felt her sour mood lift. The upper class-man never failed to make her laugh when she saw him. His teasing words and overall laid back persona made him easy to like.
"Getting ready to brave the rain, Kagome?" He asked, a light flush to his cheeks but a grin on his handsome face. She felt her own cheeks heat because he was definitely easy on the eyes and when he smiled like that, she felt her stomach flip. They had spoken a few times before, mostly because she bothered Kenma to give her the scoop on the latest game trends to keep up with her brother but she had never spoken to him alone.
Kagome offered him a quick quirk of her lips as she nodded her head and met his dark eyes. Kuroo was almost a foot taller than her, which was interesting since most human men didn't have that much a height difference, "Hey Kuroo! I'm kinda stuck here for now. I didn't bring my umbrella!" She gave a self suffering sigh but it turned into a look of surprise when the older boy cleared his throat.
His voice came out in a hurried rush, "Well why don't I walk with you?"
Kagome shook her head, brought her hands in front of her and waved them back and forth, "Ah - I couldn't possibly trouble you, Kuroo! The station I need isn't the closest!"
Kuroo rubbed the back of his neck and cursed internally, because of course she wouldn't want to be a bother. He waved off her concern with a wider smile and started to open his umbrella, "All the more reason to walk with you! The rain isn't gonna let up any time soon and I'd hate for you to be stuck here. It's honestly no trouble!" That said, he gently grabbed her elbow and coaxed her under the umbrella. She went reluctantly and wasn't surprised to hear the furious whispering of some of the left over students.
She grabbed his arm and bit her lip, refusing to look at him, "I'd hate for people to get the wrong idea about us."
He paused and looked down at the younger girl. There was a flush to her cheeks and he swallowed hard. If he were to be asked about a type a few months ago, he would have said big breasted women with long legs and tan skin. If you were to ask him now? He would say...
Small in height.
Petite in frame.
Long dark hair.
Pale unblemished skin.
Soft, sweet voice.
Intelligent.
Genuine.
Beautiful, blue eyes.
God help him, Kagome Higurashi hit all his buttons in just the right combination. He leaned down, dwarfing the younger girl. His grin has turned playful if not a little salacious as he forced her to look at him.
"Well, we should really give them something to talk about, shouldn't we?" He asked quietly as her eyes widened. His hand gripped hers and he found Kenma above her head. Kenma nodded in his direction before he began to walk home alone. Kagome made a sound as he tucked her against his side as he started to walk his dream girl to the station.
