Part III

Kagome could feel her heart racing as she eyed the clock. The closer it came to lunch time, the more nervous she was getting. Her palms were starting to sweat and she could feel her cheeks already begin to flush. So engrossed in her thoughts, she jumped when the bell signaled lunch and the teacher began to excuse them to eat.
Her fingers were trembling when she reached into her desk and was pulling out her bento when Kenma turned in his desk toward her. His usual stoic features were painted into that of curiosity as he leaned toward her.
"You gonna do it?" The crimson in her cheeks deepened and she nodded her head, throat drying. He hummed in response and began to take out his phone, "Good luck then."
Finally clearing her throat, she asked, "Is that all you have to say?"
Kenma looked at the time on his phone, "You should probably hurry. Other girls will be there soon."
Fingers clenching around the bento with a pink cloth, she scooted her chair back abruptly and left the room.
Kenma couldn't help the small smirk that tilted his lips at the fire in her cerulean gaze.
.
He had been declining bento for several years now so he didn't know why they bothered to try. Kuroo personally preferred not to hurt anyone's feelings and knew if he accepted one, he would have to accept all of them especially since he wasn't going to play favorites and give someone a false sense of hope.
There were always a few girls around to offer lunch to him and he always declined with a smile and polite "no thank you" before heading to the cafeteria to grab something. Not that homemade bento didn't sound great because it did. He would make his own but he was just too damn busy for something like that.
He was still standing near his desk when four girls from other classes and years eagerly surrounded him.
"Oh please take my bento today!"
"Yours? He'd probably die from eating such a poorly made meal!"
"I made this one last night with love!"
"Ha! I made mine this morning! Don't eat that trash!"
He sighed and put his hands up in a placating manner, quickly getting their attention, "Ah, ladies I really appreciate you going through all the trouble but I honestly wanted something from the cafeteria today."
A chorus of disappointed sighs reached his ears and he tried to walk by but one of the girls moved into his way, preventing him from leaving, "You've been acting really strange lately, Kuroo. There's a rumor you walked some girl home a few weeks ago."
"Yeah! Even went on a date!"
"Are you gonna eat her bento? Is that why you won't eat ours?"
His back was stiff but his smile was still disarming, "I don't eat anyone's bento." Although if Kagome had made him a bento, he would eat it without question.
The loudest of the girls was staring at him, her green eyes wide and bright, "Are you sure?"
At the corner of his eye he thought he saw long black hair but one of the girls was steadfastly looking at him and grabbing his attention, "I'm sure."
The girls grumbled as they one by one left and he let loose a sigh he was holding in. One of his classmates whistled, "Ah, I wish I had your problems."
Kuroo rolled his eyes, "You say that until you're actually living it." His phone was vibrating in his pocket and he pulled it out. A message from Kenma made him squint his eyes and then smile, "Someone made Kenma a bento!"
Cute! Who's the lucky girl? That pink really brings out the color of your eyes. He was snickering as he hit send.
It's yours, idiot.
Mine?
Kagome made it. She just came back and tossed it at me.
Kuroo's eyes were wide and his stomach was knitting impressively as he rushed from the room, ignoring his startled classmates. He was running through the halls, passed disgruntled students and irritated teachers to Kenma and Kagome's classroom.
When he slid the door open, he saw Kenma looking down at the lunch contemplatively as though not sure if he was going to eat it. He pointed at the boy and as Kenma reached out for it, Kuroo snapped, "That's mine!"
Kenma looked over at his friend, startled by the possessive note in his voice but unphased nonetheless. Kuroo ignored the silence in the room as he stalked toward Kenma and took the lunch from his desk. The younger boy looked bored as he sighed, "She went to the roof."
No sooner than the words were out of his mouth did Kuroo dash from the classroom as though the dogs of hell were chasing him. Kenma couldn't help but snicker as the door slammed behind the volleyball captain.
Kuroo was taking the steps two at a time, holding the pink wrapped bento in his arms carefully. His breathing was starting to come out harshly as he ran all over the school. He was at the rooftop door which was slightly ajar. Just as he was about to push it open, he heard her voice.
" - couldn't do it."
A slightly far away voice answered and he realized she was talking to someone on speaker. A guy at that, "Ah, don't worry. There is always next time."
"No. No next time. It was hard enough to try this time." There was a sternness in her voice but he could also hear a little wobble that struck his heart. "And it's been weeks since our last date anyway. I'm sure he would have declined my bento."
The voice's next words startled him with their vehemence, "Then fuck that guy, Kagome. He doesn't know what he's missing. Do you want me to come get you?"
She was sniffling when she responded, "N-No… I'm okay, I just…"
Having heard enough, he pushed the door open and looked for her around the rooftop, his lips turned into a frown. He found her in the corner of, sitting down with her knees to her chest, her head on her knees and phone right beside her. She had turned when the door slammed open and he could feel the breath leave his lungs and heart drop into his stomach at the tears that were beading the corner of her eyes.
She blinked at him in surprise and she was about to stand when he held up the bento and started walking toward her, "I don't eat anyone's food because I don't like any of the girls that try to feed me. I don't want anyone to feel led on. When I found out you made me lunch, I ran to get it." he stopped in front of her and crouched so he was directly facing her, "We haven't gone on a second date because I've been busy with volleyball practice and I should have said that instead of nothing because there is no way for you to know that."
He lifted a hand and was brushing his thumb under her eye along the apple of her cheek, wiping a stray tear, "And yeah, you can definitely say 'fuck this guy' but I really like you and hope you don't."
Kagome's mouth was partially open in shock and she closed it abruptly, "I - I'm not sure what to even say."
At that, Kuroo grinned broadly, "Say that you'll go on a date with me tomorrow and let's eat lunch together, okay?"
With her lips curling into a slow and shy smile, Kuroo let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding when she nodded ,"I would like that… and I'm sorry for the misunderstanding on my part."
He shook his head and was leaning over to brush a kiss on her forehead, "No, I'm sorry for not explaining." His lips touched her skin and in that moment, all was right between them. Kuroo pulled away and settled next to her as he began to open the lunch that had been through hell and back and tossed all over the place.
As he was about to open the top, a voice startled him from her phone, "Well I'm gonna assume that everything's okay and turn back around. Have a good lunch!"
And the phone beeped as the call ended leaving two blushing teens.
