A/N Lee and Joel have finally found Clementine and Ellie. The Stranger is dead. The only thing that remains is for them to reach the bridge and get out of Savannah. Will they make it there alive and in one piece? Be sure to let me know what you think of this crossover. I do not own The Walking Dead or The Last of Us.
Chapter 7: Endgame
Moments passed since the reunion of the two men and their little girls. The door to the hotel room they were trapped in had creaked from being pushed open. Clementine and Ellie's backpacks were still in here. They didn't think about retrieving them when they made their escape. They would've surely been caught if they tried. Since that was no longer an issue, they walk over to the closet at the end of the room and open it. That was where Clem saw them when she tried to make contact with them on the radio before. Both girls reclaim their bags and start looking over to make sure nothing was missing. Reaching inside, Clem found her pistol that was taken from her and places it back inside her hoodie pocket. Lee approaches Clem from behind.
Lee: "Are you okay?"
Clementine: "Uh-huh."
Lee: "Did he hurt y'all?"
Clementine: "No. Not really. I'm sorry, Lee."
Lee: "Hey, it's okay."
Meanwhile, Joel noticed the walkie-talkie left on the top shelf and takes it. This is how the Stranger has been contacting them this whole time. Should he hold on to it or just leave it? Taking a moment to give it some thought, he remembered Lee did still have Clem's on his waistband. Even though this was what lead him to them, it had been helpful when Glenn was trapped at the Motor inn, and it was how they confirmed where their girls were being held. Maybe it would worth keeping hold of in the long run. Once he had placed it in his pack, he talks to his girl.
Joel: "You all good?"
Not getting a response, he then regretted asking that question. She just killed a man for the first time. It's not the same as killing a walker. He knows this from personal experience.
Joel: "Ellie?"
Ellie: "It was his. It- it was his stuff. From that station wagon. He came after us... because we robbed him and his family of everything he had in that. It got them killed. They died because of us."
That certainly explained a hell of a lot. That choice they made to steal all those supplies from that station wagon has really come back to bite them in the ass. Lilly said so herself; they came out of those woods in the middle of the night and ruined their lives. They took it for the sake of their own survival, and it costed other people to die as a result. That alone made it very difficult to justify their actions. But they truly believed it was abandoned. None of them had any way of knowing it would get this far. All this was about a man wanting revenge for his family. He even wanted to take Clementine and Ellie for himself to start a new family, whether they willingly wanted to be or not. Joel kneels down and keeps trying to talk to Ellie.
Joel: "Listen. We couldn't have known any of this would happen. Ain't nothing we can do to change any of that now. Ellie, talk to me. How are you feeling?"
She didn't answer at first. She was choking back another tear and still feeling like she may throw up at any second. Not because of the god-awful smell coming from these two guys, but because of what she just did to that man with the cleaver.
Ellie: "I... I feel sick. I never... killed a person before. He just wouldn't let us go. He wouldn't stop chasing us, and when I saw him going after Clem, I- I didn't want him to hurt her. I was fucking scared of what he was gonna do if I didn't-"
Joel: "I know. I get it. You were doing what you had to do to protect yourself. Clementine, too."
Ellie: "Yeah, but... Clem, I'm really sorry you had to see me do that."
The young girl has known Ellie to have a bit of a temper and prone to be constantly swearing, much like the other adults. But she had never seen Ellie act so violently before. Watching her swinging that bloody cleaver over and over again scared her. But she was even more scared of what that man would've done if she hadn't.
Clementine: "...He was going to hurt us."
Ellie: "He was. That's why I did it, but-"
Joel: "Hey. We're the ones who should be sorry."
She looked at him confusingly before he further explained.
Joel: "For lettin' you both have to go through something like this. For not doing enough to protect you."
Ellie: "But, we chose to run away from you guys just to come here. If we hadn't-"
She paused upon feeling him placed his hand on her shoulder and shifted closer, calmly looking her in the eyes.
Joel: "Ain't no point in thinking about what we should've done or what could've happened differently. What's important is that you're both safe now. So, have you got everything?"
Ellie: "Yeah."
Joel: "Good. Now, we just have to figure out how we're gonna leave here to get to the bridge so we can leave Savannah."
Ellie: "Okay. But, wait, what about-? Wh-where are the others? Aren't they here, too?"
Joel: "We got separated from them on the way here."
Clementine: "Separated? How did- W-what happened? Are they…?"
Lee: "They're fine. We're gonna meet up with em on the other side of that bridge."
If only that provided some comfort to them. If any of their crew really died because of all this just to get to them... they wouldn't know what to think. Now there just one question left; how are they going to reach the Talmadge Memorial Bridge from here? Lee did see some Hunters there before the first time they came to River Street. With all the walkers out there, it's more likely they'll still be there defending their post, and that's assuming they haven't been overwhelmed by them yet. Pushing through the herd was difficult enough the first time, and they didn't like the idea of doing it again after having just got their girls back. Hell, they were lucky enough to not get bitten at all. There was the option to take the station wagon, but there were too many for them to drive through. Not exactly an ideal vehicle to use in this situation either. They'd be swarmed and ripped apart within seconds before they could even reach the end of the block. As they were thinking, Lee found the Stranger's pistol on a dresser near the door leading to the bathroom and picks it up to extract a few bullets from the clip. Then both he and Joel took notice of an open bowling bag left right beside a chair. The very bag the Stranger was talking to earlier. Looking inside, the men could see a female walker's head inside. It had to be his wife's head.
Joel: "What the-"
Lee: "Oh Jesus."
Ellie: "What? What is it?"
The former black market dealer debated on whether or not to be honest about what they were looking at, given what they just went through. So, he answers with a half-truth as he kneels over the head in the bag.
Joel: "Whoever he was, he must've really gone off the deep end."
Taking out his shiv, he decides to end this head's prolonged life, jamming it through the forehead and pulling it back out to pocket the small blade. The girls didn't bother asking anymore questions about that. They just got their answer what was in that bag. There really wasn't much left for them in this room. They got what they came for. Still had to figure some other way to leave through the herd.
When Lee opened the door, he was suddenly greeted by a walker right in his face. He let out a small gasp that alerted the others and expected it to try and grapple him. Only, it never did. The rotten corpse just kept moaning and remained where it was. As if it were completely ignoring the survivor standing in front of it. But then it focused on the younger survivors in the room and lets out a snarl. Before it could move any closer, Lee grabs it by the back of its neck and shoves down in the floor, where Joel finishes it off by shooting it in the head. All of them were in disbelief of what just happened.
Clementine: "It… It didn't bite you."
Lee: "Yeah, I know. It must've…"
Ellie: "You guys are covered in all that blood and shit. Smells awful."
Joel: "We had to push through a bunch of em just to make it here."
And then, struck by inspiration, both men soon turn to face one another with a look in their eyes.
Joel: "Hey, you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Lee: "Yeah. I think so."
The walker didn't attack Lee because he smelled just like it. It couldn't tell him apart from one of its own. This is how they will get to the bridge and out of Savannah. They're both already smeared. Just have to get the girls covered as well. With this in mind, Lee withdrew his weapon and stands over the dead body.
Joel: "You both might wanna pinch your noses."
Ellie: "Wha- wait. What the hell are you doing?"
Lee: "These things smell horrible. Which means we all have to, too. This is our way out."
Clementine: "Oh no..."
With one swing from his fireaxe, Lee stabs it in the chest using the picked-sharp end and pulls it all the way down to its stomach, carving it open. Retracting the weapon, he and Joel kneel down to reach into the corpse and scoop out some guts with their bare hands. It all felt as unpleasant as it smells. The girls cringe from watching this and frown at the men for what they were about to do. They start by smearing their fronts, rubbing the guts all over their arms, body and legs. The whole process was so nasty and uncomfortable.
Clementine: "Ugh, ah, ah! Eeewww!"
Ellie: "God, this is so fucking gross!"
Joel: "I know. I know. But we gotta do this."
Ellie: "Really?"
Joel: "Just trust us, okay? Now turn around."
Reluctantly doing so, they could hear more guts being scooped out.
Lee: "We'll get you both cleaned up as soon as we can once this is over."
Clementine: "Not soon enough."
They repeat the process, smearing as much as they can all around their backside as they were groaning in disgust.
Ellie: "Uggh, Joel, I swear to God, if this really gets us all out of here alive, you are so singing for me."
Joel: "Ha. You wish."
Clementine: "Are you done?"
Lee: "Almost. Just need a lil more."
They then scoop a smaller amount, turns them around again and wipes it on their faces. At least they were being careful as to not let any of it get in their hair.
Joel: "Okay, that oughta do it."
Clementine: "I hope so."
Ellie: "Eugh. Feels like I just got barfed all over."
Compared to having to walking through those sewers, this was actually worse. Neither of them really expect the girls to be happy about this plan. But as long as it works, that's all that matters.
Lee: "And you're missing something."
Reaching into his pack, he takes out her signature ballcap and she immediately smiled upon seeing it, happy to reclaim what she lost and place it back on her head. Right where it belonged.
Clementine: "I thought it was gone."
Lee: "We thought y'all were gone."
Clementine: "Thank you."
He grins and nods at his girl. Joel also still had something that belong to Ellie when he reached into his pack to hold out her pistol and Walkman with the headphones still plugged in for her to take back.
Joel: "Try keeping better hold of these, yeah?"
Ellie: "I will. Thanks."
And with that, they were all set as they step out of the room and make their way to the front doors. Time to leave this Godforsaken city once and for all.
The four survivors were now standing at the entrance of the hotel. Watching through the glass doors, the young girls were shocked to see a herd this big. Lee and Joel made across all of those to get here? And now they had to go back out there and walk among them. The thought itself was scary enough. They were making a gamble on this plan. Hopefully they used enough guts to mask their scent.
Joel: "All right. This is it. Once we go through these doors, there ain't no going back and no stopping."
Lee: "No matter what happens, stay close to one another and walk very slowly. Don't look around and don't panic."
Clementine: "Okay."
Ellie: "I really hope that this works. If it doesn't, I'm gonna be so pissed."
Joel: "It will. It has to. Don't worry. We'll keep y'all safe."
The moment they open the doors and step out, they immediately braced themselves, taking slows steps forward. They could hear some thunder from the dark clouds above them. And then, they enter the herd of walkers. The men both kept a hand placed on their girls' shoulder. To say that this was an anxious and stressful situation was an understatement. They've never been this close to walkers before without thinking about reaching for a weapon or having to keep them from tearing their throats out. So far, the plan seems to be working. All of the walkers weren't even noticing them. They had to reach the end of the block. From there, it should be a straight shot to the bridge. One of them bumped it's shoulder with Lee's, but still kept roaming. They came to a stop briefly to let two more pass by and keep going.
But then, just as they were about to reach the end of the block, Clem looks to her right and came to a stop, causing Lee to stop also when he felt his hand slip off her shoulder. Joel and Ellie soon noticed they weren't nearby and wondered what was keeping them until they see it as well. There were two walkers standing side by side on the sidewalk. Except they weren't just any walkers. The young girl recognized them the moment she saw them. Having seen their family photo before, Lee widened his eyes when the realization struck him. It was them. Clementine's parents. They had actually found them. But not in the way they were hoping for.
Lee: "Clem, don't look."
She barely even responded to his words. Saddened and terrified, Clementine wouldn't move an inch and keeps staring with wide eyes. Was she even listening to him? Their friends that were standing a few feet away managed to put it together what was happening.
Ellie: "Holy shit. Joel, is that-"
Joel: "Yeah. I think it is."
Ellie: "Oh, my God. Clem..."
And then, the thunder got louder. Joel looks up in the sky until he felt a drop of rain land on his nose. And then sees a few more land on the street. The worst case scenario was happening. If the rain starting to come down on them, it was bound to wash away all the blood and guts on them, exposing them to the herd.
Joel: "Oh no. No, no, no!"
Ellie: "Joel, I don't think this is gonna work for much longer."
Joel: "I know. Shit! Lee, we can't stay here."
Realizing how urgent their situation has become, Lee reached for Clem and tries to get her to move.
Lee: "Clem, we have to go!"
Unfortunately, she wouldn't move and was so focused on her parents' roaming corpses. All that time she had hoped to see them and talk to them again, to have them meet Lee and their friends. She was too late. They were too late. Her family was really dead.
Lee: "Clementine!"
The rain was getting heavier. With their disguise now dripping down off their clothes and face, the walkers that were ignoring them before were now taking notice of their presence. Drawing his revolver, Joel makes sure Ellie was right next to him and calls out again while stepping backwards.
Joel: "Lee! Clementine!"
Left with no other choice, Lee scoops up Clem in his arms and makes a run for it, following Joel and Ellie. Two walkers were shot down as they reach the end of the block, which was a lot less crowded and turn right, making a beeline for the bridge.
Clementine: "My... my- my parents... Mom... and dad... They're- they're really dead."
Lee: "I know, sweet pea. I'm sorry. Just focus on me, okay? We're getting outta here."
Holding onto his girl as tight as he could, he keeps following after Joel and Ellie. The rain was now coming down hard with clouds flashing with lightning. If Mother Nature hadn't intervened, they could've made it all the way out of the city without little to no trouble. By now, they made it pass two intersections with a few walkers gunned down that got in their way. But then, something had been tossed out in the street and lands right in between them. They stopped to soon realize it was a pipe bomb.
Joel: "LOOK OUT!"
The pipe bomb detonates, splitting them up with Lee and Clementine on the west side of the block while Joel and Ellie were on the east. Turning to where the explosive came from, there was a group of Hunters emerging from the street, walking past and over a damaged stripped vehicle. At the head of the group was a Hunter that looked like he was as tall as Larry, armed with a bow, wearing a bulletproof vest over his cameo jacket, quiver full of arrows, and a combat helmet. Whether or not he was actually part of the military was up to debate. But one thing was clear; this had to be the one all the other Hunters were talking about ever since they first arrived. This was their boss. And now he's got his sights set on these four tourists.
Hunter: "There they are, boss! Those are the fucking tourists that fucked up our city and have been killing our men!"
Hunter Boss: "Is that so? Well, don't just stand there bitching at me about it. Go fuck em up! Make them realize who they're fucking with."
The hostile men follow their orders and close in on the tourists as they take off running. Joel and Ellie find themselves inside a parking garage, rushing over to the first car they see and hide behind it. There was a dead body laying in the backseat with the bottom half of its body hanging out. Three Hunters enter the parking garage, but had lost sight of the tourists.
Meanwhile, Lee and Clementine rush inside a bar with more Hunters not too far behind. The man grabs a chair to jam it against the door. The windows were all boarded up, so there was no other way of getting in. The two then hurry behind the counter once the Hunters outside attempt to break the door down. They had to think of a plan quickly. Suddenly, the radio on his waistband made some static noise again. With the Stranger dead, he was not expecting anyone else to be calling. Regardless, Lee grabs it and hears who was on the other end.
Joel: "Lee. You there?"
Lee: "Yeah. Wait, how are you-"
Joel: "I found the other radio before we left. Are you and Clementine okay? Where are you?"
Lee: "We're fine. Looks like we're in a bar. I think we're right across the street from where you guys are. We got Hunters trying to break in."
Joel: "Okay, well, Ellie and I got our hands full with a few of em inside a parking garage. If you can find your way out the back, we'll try to meet up with you there."
Lee: "Got it. Stay safe."
Joel and Ellie still haven't moved from their hiding spot. Thankfully, none of the Hunters searching for them heard the radio chatter. While thinking of how to deal with them, he remembered the recipe for a smoke bomb he was given to by Molly. Reaching for the paper in his pocket, Joel quickly reads the various list of materials that could be used to make one. He only needs two of them.
Ellie: "What the hell is that?"
Joel: "Something Molly gave me on the way over. I got an idea. Think you can watch my back?"
She nods her head and withdraws her pistol, ready to shoot if they get spotted. First step is to gather the needed materials. He sneaks alongside the car and starts off searching the body. There was nothing on him that could help, but he did see two small sugar packets on the other side, which is actually one of the materials he needs, reaches out and takes them. That's one down, one to go. There was another car with the trunk wide open. He could find something in there, if it weren't for the Hunters in their way. They need a distraction. Searching around, he finds a brick close to the flat tire and takes it. This'll do. Reeling his arm back, Joel tosses the brick to one area of the garage. Startled by the noise, two of them move to investigate while the third keeps watch. Joel and Ellie take this chance to sneak over to the next car. Inside the trunk, there didn't appear to be anything. But he did find a small pouch. He takes it and finds explosive powder inside. That's exactly what he needed. He takes out the sugar packets and begins crafting them together.
Ellie: "Hurry, Joel."
Joel: "Almost done."
It may not be exactly like how Molly and Henry make them, but hopefully this will still work. Once it was complete, he reaches for his lighter, looks over the car to see two of the Hunters still looking around the spot the brick landed, lights the smoke bomb and tosses it right at their feet. A moment later, smoke erupts and disorients them. Joel then spotted the third Hunter on his right with a shotgun. Since he was too focused on the others being suddenly engulfed in smoke, Joel quickly thought of how to take him down.
Joel: "Ellie, shoot that one in the leg."
Ellie: "Okay."
While he sneaks over to the other car, Ellie peeks out from the side, takes aim and kneecaps the Hunter, causing him to stagger on his feet. Joel then quickly moved in to stab him in the chest with the machete, grabs the shotgun and then cold-cocks him. Moving ahead to the other two Hunters, he aims his new shotgun after switching on his torch and waits for them to emerge before eventually blasting them both in the head. That's twice now the smoke bomb has come in handy.
Joel: "Search em, and then we gotta catch up with Lee and Clementine."
Lee and Clem could hear the door finally being kicked open. Peeking around the corner, Lee caught a glimpse and saw only two of them. One of them told the other to go look at one side while he checks the other.
Lee: "Clem, keep your head down, okay?"
She responds with a nod and he waits for the right moment to strike. Once a Hunter got close enough, Lee moves to grab his gun, headbutts him and then holds him as a human shield. His buddy spots him and before he could take aim, Lee shoots him from the other side of the bar, hitting him in the chest, gut and neck before he dropped dead. Lee even attempted to execute the Hunter, but the gun only clicked. He barely had time to react when the Hunter broke free by hitting him with the back of his head. Lee steps back to avoid a punch and then ducks to dodge another. Countering with jab to the gut, Lee nails him with a right hook and tries to punch him again. But then he blocks it and grabs a bottle from the counter to swing at Lee. He brought his arm up to shield himself as it broke on contact, but was struck right where his wound was, causing him to cry out in pain and clutch his arm. The Hunter then tackled him on the floor to try and stab him with the broken bottle. Lee used his right hand to grab his wrist and attempted to push back, but his enemy was pushing down with both hands. The sharp end was getting closer and closer to his neck. Just as he was nearly overpowered, the Hunter was suddenly shot in the eye and falls on top of Lee. Pushing the body off of him, He felt his neck and finds smalls bits of blood on his fingers. Just a minor cut, nothing serious. Lee then turned to see Clementine aiming her own pistol with a scared and distressed look in her eyes. First it was Ellie, and now Clem. They've both killed a man tonight.
Clementine: "I... I..."
The man gets up from the floor and was soon right in front of her, placing his hand on her small shoulder and wiping fresh tears from her eyes with the other.
Lee: "Hey, shhh. We're okay. Everything's okay."
Clementine: "I..."
Lee: "Clem, we need to find Joel and Ellie, and leave this place. Then we can talk, okay?"
Eventually she nods at him and holds his hand as he leads them through the kitchen to get out the back door. But the second he opens it and steps out in the rain, he was suddenly smashed by the door and knocked into the ground due to the Hunter Boss intercepting where they would be and kicking the door on him.
Hunter Boss: "Thought you could get away from us? From me? After all the shit you caused, huh?! Think again, motherfucker!"
Shaking the blurriness from his vision, Lee looks up to see him aiming the bow and arrow at his face and rolls out of the way avoid it, letting it hit the concrete. While trying to reach for another arrow, Lee withdrew his fireaxe, swings and misses his target. When he tried to swing at him again, the brute grabs hold before it could hit him, retracts his bow before punching him with a left hook, causing him to let go of his weapon, uses the handle to smack him in the head and then kicks him hard in the gut, sending him right into a street sign behind him, hitting his head on the metal pole and falls on his face, completely knocked out. Moving in to finish him off, Clem tried to stopped him, but was easily shoved away. Standing over the unconscious tourist, he holds the axe with both hands over his neck.
Hunter Boss: "And here I thought all those Crawford pricks were a pain in the ass. But you? You tourists really know how to piss. Me. Off."
Raising the axe high over his head, ready to decapitate him. But then, as lightning flashes in the sky again, the brute was tackled from the right side and brought down onto the pavement. The impact caused him to lose his bow and two of his arrows. He looks up to see another one of the persistent tourists. Joel and Ellie had arrived just in time. Speaking of which, the teen helped Clem up and they both went to wake up the former professor. Joel had punched the boss three times until he gets shoved away. Getting back on their feet, Joel withdraws his machete and glares at this man using Lee's fireaxe as they circle one another, ready for a fight to the death.
Hunter Boss: "This is why we never allowed anymore tourists into our city! You assholes think you can just come into my fucking city?! Bring all these fucking lurkers with you to fuck it all up for us?! Just for that, I'll make sure you all die nice and slow like. And when I'm done with y'all, them fucking bell ringers are next!"
Joel: "Come on then, you ugly bastard."
The two of them kept circling each other until the brute makes the first move, swinging the axe over his head. Joel dodges the attacks and counters by slicing him with his blade, causing two minor cuts on his wrist and gut, but then the third swing gets parried by the handle. The boss then knees him in the ribs to stun him and then struck hard with a backhand, knocking him backwards and tripped over a trash can. As he raised Lee's axe, he then got shot in the back by an arrow and a bullet. Turning around, he saw it was the teen girl using his own bow and arrow against him while the younger girl had a pistol. Outraged, he marches straight for them.
Hunter: "You little bitches!"
Before he could get any closer, Joel had shot him twice, hitting him in the vest and arm. His revolver clicked before he could do anymore damage. With no time to reload, he retracts it back in his holster and resumes using the machete.
Joel: "Get away from them!"
Hunter Boss: "Or what, dickhead?"
He responds by swinging for his head, but misses. He then narrowly avoids being chopped in the neck by ducking and then punches him in the face and swings his machete again to cut his shoulder. Joel was then grabbed the throat and about to be hit with a headbutt. With that helmet on, it was bound to hurt twice as bad. But was interrupted by another arrow by Ellie striking him in the helmet, causing him to direct his glare at her. Taking advantage of the distraction. Joel grabs for the helmet, pulls it off and smacks him in the face with it, freeing himself from the boss's grasp.
Lee was finally coming around, groaning from the hit to the head and was now being helped up by the little girls. But then they hear snarling and moaning close by and notices the herd coming their way. They can't stay here for much longer. Hearing the sound of fighting behind them, they see Joel getting knocked down and lost grip of his weapon. The boss lifts the axe in attempt to chop his head, but Joel veers to the right to dodge the attack, letting the axe strike concrete. He then knocked the weapon out of his hands, reached for his shiv and tries to stabs him in the face, but hits his collarbone instead, who then retaliates by punching him and pulls out the shiv to use it against him. Joel grabs his wrist to push it back.
Hunter Boss: "Just fucking die, asshole!"
Lee reclaimed his fireaxe and uses it to save his friend by chopping the brute's right arm. Clementine follows it up by firing her gun to hit him in the leg, causing him to drop the shiv. Ellie then lets loose another arrow to hit him through the left shoulder, allowing Joel to retrieve his machete and stab him in the chest, piercing through his vest. That was enough to do him in. Knowing that he was down and out, Joel pulls his weapon out and all four of the survivors gather around and watch him succumb to his wounds. He even spits out some blood and looks at them with disbelief and anger.
Hunter Boss: "Rgh. Aah. Well, ain't this about a bitch. Looks like you tourists got me."
They didn't really have anything to say to him. He can't do anything to hurt them now. Ellie reached for the arrows in his quiver to take them and the bow for herself. Turning their attention back to the approaching herd, they only had less than a minute at best before it reaches them. All that was left was to decide this violent brute's fate.
Hunter Boss: "Well? The fuck are you waiting for?"
Joel and Lee look at each other for a moment, knowing they were left with two options of what to do with; kill him themselves or leave him to be eaten alive. They knew he deserved everything he had coming to him. Even more so when Molly said so herself that this was the man that murdered her sister. In the end, they made their decision. Silently agreeing to let the walkers have at him and look at him one last time.
Lee: "Nothing. We were just waiting for them to catch up."
At first, he wasn't sure what the tourist meant by that. But then he finally noticed them and looks behind him to see all the lurkers approaching. They could smell his blood and were coming for him. Facing the tourists again, they were already walking away from him, much to his dismay.
Hunter Boss: "Hey! What's the matter? After everyone else you killed, suddenly you ain't the balls to finish what you started?!"
Joel: "You'd be a waste of a bullet."
He didn't like that answer. The Hunter boss tries to go after them, but was grabbed from behind before he could get the chance. He desperately tried to fight off the many infected surrounding him, but to no avail. They were biting him in the neck, arm, leg and torso as he screams of agony. The men and little girls double their pace to get themselves as far away from the herd as possible. And with that, just like Crawford, the Hunters were no more. The streets of Savannah no longer belonged to them.
The rain had finally stopped. The four of them had made it to the highway that will lead them to the bridge, the only way out of the city. Having put enough distance from the herd, the four of them come to a stop for a little rest and sit down up against the road barrier. Lee groaned in pain while lowering himself, which worried Clem more after seeing the bruises on his face and minor cut on his neck. Joel didn't get the worse of it, yet he also had a bruise on his face and a bloody nose.
Clementine: "Lee. Are you okay?"
Lee: "Yeah, I'm all right. Just a little banged up is all. Might need a minute."
At that moment, she finally allowed herself to cry. Letting loose some tears and sobbing over everything that happened. Seeing this caused Lee's heart to ache and reached out to her.
Lee: "Hey, it's okay. I'm right here. We're right here with you."
Clementine: "My parents... it's so horrible."
Lee: "I-I can't imagine, sweet pea."
Clementine: "That man... He was about to... I didn't... I didn't w-wanna lose you, too. I... I-"
No doubt about it; the events of everything that transpired tonight was bound to leave emotional scars on not only her, but Ellie as well. He pulls her into his arms and rubs her back. While he was thankful that she actually saved him, he knew that neither her or Ellie would ever be the same after tonight. He remembered what it was like when he took a life for the first time. That night he found his wife with that state senator. With these thoughts in mind, he gives Clem some piece of advice for her to remember.
Lee: "Listen to me. What you did back there, what Ellie did to that man in the Marsh House, was self defense. But you should never have to kill someone for any other reason but that. Taking a life, shooting things... it changes you. You have to be careful about that in the future. You shouldn't have to get used to it. I don't want you to get used to it. Do you understand?"
Clementine: "Yes."
Lee: "Okay. Good."
Listening in on their conversation, it didn't take much for the two sitting beside them to realize that Clementine also killed someone for the first time. Based on their words, it sounded like she did it to save her guardian. Just like how the teen girl did it to save her friend. At that moment, Joel recalled the other times he didn't believe they'd be able to handle surviving in situations like these, that they wouldn't be able to handle using a firearm. The fact they were all still alive here and now proved him otherwise. He'll really have to thank Chuck for all that advice if they ever manage to find him again.
Joel: "You were right, kiddo."
Ellie: "About what?"
Joel: "You and Clementine. You both know how to take care of yourselves. I had my doubts but, well, I'm glad I was wrong. Hell, you even managed to save both our asses back there."
That actually felt really good to her. To hear compliments coming from him, acknowledging their ability to survive.
Ellie: "When we were trapped in that fucking hotel room, all I could think about was everything you taught us. That's what helped keep me going and eventually figure a way out."
Joel: "Endure and survive. Right?"
He actually remembered the line from her Savage Starlight comics. She hadn't read any of those since Macon. Hearing that quote brought a grin to her face.
Ellie: "To the edge of the universe and back. Endure and survive."
All in all, they were proud of them. They definitely weren't the same little girls since the first day they met. Both of the men have changed too, whether they realize it or not. They all took another moment to rest. This day had proven to be one of the most challenging experiences they've ever endured. And yet, they were still not bitten, and still alive. And now, they were finally getting out of here. Feeling like they've rested enough, Joel was the first to rise up.
Joel: "C'mon, baby girl. Time to go."
Ellie: "Yeah. I'm with you."
After helping her up, he holds his hand out for Lee to take, who accepts it and gets pulled back on his feet. He winced again from the pain, but reassured he was fine.
Clementine: "Where do we go now?"
Lee: "Someplace else, sweet pea. Someplace better."
With nothing left keeping them here and nothing else in their way, the four of them walk up the highway that will lead them across the Talmadge Memorial Bridge. They have been through Hell and back to get to where they are. The many close calls they survived, the hard choices they made and the bonds they forged. But it was all far from over. They still had a very long journey ahead of them.
Lee: "Always keep moving forward."
A/N I should point out that originally in The Last of Us, the Hunters have mentioned having a leader more than once, but was never seen in-game before. I wanted to do something about it tried to imagine the kind of guy he would be; big, intimidating, very tough and hard to kill. I really wanted to finish strong, so I hope you liked all the action that I've written for the finale. So, yeah. It's nearly over. Just about. All that's left is the epilogue and Book 5 will be finished, completing the first season of this crossover. Now, if you had to decide on what to do with the Stanger's radio, and the Hunter Boss, what would you do?
