Rose has always been better at being social.
Albus wishes he could leave being social part of attending Hogwarts University, now, to her like he always used to, as he tries not to feel trapped, (hopefully) succeeds in disguising his unease, and (maybe) talks engagingly to three other students, whose names he can't remember. They're talking about Albus's father, who's Head of Interworld Law Enforcement, because that's what everyone always does when he's around. And he's kind of (definitely) tuning them out because no one ever says anything new or wants Albus' own input, which is why it takes him a moment to realize that everyone's gone quiet.
He turns to where they're all staring, and he doesn't need Rose's head for names and faces to recognize the newcomer.
Scorpius Malfoy.
The fact that his father's Draco Malfoy, the notorious criminal now locked away on the prison world, Azkaban, is bad enough, but Albus has heard the rumors that he might be descended from someone even worse: Voldemort, the infamous sorcerer, the terrorist of all the worlds, who Albus's father is famous for defeating.
He even looks kind of like Voldemort, from the pictures Albus has seen, at least - with too-pale skin, a thin tall build, though he's got the classic 'Malfoy' blond hair and pale gray eyes, which is altogether almost kind of handsome (objectively speaking, not that Albus noticed).
"Hi!" Malfoy says forcefully, when the silence lingers. "I'm Scorpius Malfoy, it's a pleasure to meet you all." He steps forward, and Albus is certain it's not a coincidence that he approaches the group Rose is standing with. Rose can almost definitely handle herself, but-
"Who'd you bribe to get in, Malfoy?" Albus calls.
Malfoy freezes mid-step as he turns to face Albus. "I'm sorry-"
"You should be," Rose adds. "After what your father did, and you've got the nerve to show up, here? It's obvious someone in admission's corrupt."
"I've got as much of a right to be here as you all do!" Malfoy blurts, his words rushed together, before he visibly breathes and adds more slowly, "Maybe more than some of you. It's not like anyone will accept bribes from the Malfoys anymore, but the Potters? The Weasleys? Some of us don't get everything handed to us on a silver platter."
Oh no, he did not. Malfoy has no idea how hard it is to be famous! Albus opens his mouth to retort, just as someone makes a hem-hem sound, and they all turn to the sound to see-
Professor Umbridge.
She has perfect timing, too, because Albus had no idea what he was going to say, and Rose can't save him from every embarrassing thing he does.
Because, embarrassing. That's what Albus is, to his family - he's not charismatic and popular and athletic, like James, or intuitive and brilliant and a child prodigy like Lily, or politic and witty and diplomatic like Rose, or adorable and strategically underestimated and sneaky like Hugo, or any of the dozens of other amazing things the rest of his family is.
That's why Albus thought it up. The Plan. Because his father is famous for his magic, and Albus is his son, so he has to have inherited some, right? And Professor Umbridge is a famous sorceress, which means…
Professor Umbridge has paused in her speech, and though Albus has no idea what she just asked she has to be asking for questions, right? So he raises his hand and-
"Mister Potter! Lovely, I'm sure you and Mister Malfoy will get along perfectly!"
"What?" Albus has to have misheard, right? "Professor, I was actually wondering-"
"And a room to yourself anyway, too," Professor Umbridge notes as she marks something on a clipboard. "Thank you for volunteering to share your room with Mister Malfoy, Mister Potter."
"What?" Albus blurts again. "Share, with Malfoy? I-"
"Professor, please, put me anywhere else!" Malfoy interrupts, and Albus can't find it in himself to be annoyed at the audacity to interrupt him because they're trying for the same thing here. "I can't-"
"Hem hem," Professor Umbridge fake-coughs again, before smiling sweetly as she adds, "You've already volunteered, Mister Potter, and this really is best - everyone else is sharing a room, so this will work perfectly."
"Professor-!"
"Hem hem. If that's all-"
"Albus Potter-"
"-then you may all take your things-"
"I can't-"
"-to your rooms. Schedules will be handed out at breakfast tomorrow."
Professor Umbridge turns to leave, just as Malfoy shouts, "Wait!" And then-
Albus blinks, because he must have seen wrong, because it almost looks like… like the clipboard in Professor Umbridge's hands flew up and into Malfoy's outstretched hands, as if by magic. But that's impossible!
"…Was that you, Mister Malfoy?" Professor Umbridge asks slowly, her voice for once losing its sickly sweet quality.
There's no trace of magic in the Malfoy lineage, not like there is in Albus's family!
"I- I'm sorry, professor," Malfoy stammers. "It keeps happening when I'm upset, but I'll try to control myself. I-"
"No, don't apologize," Professor Umbridge interrupts. "Mister Malfoy, what you have is a gift! You have magic, and with the proper training, well. Have you ever considered a career in sorcery?"
Albus stares, because Professor Umbridge is notoriously picky in the students she chooses, but from the looks of it- Is she really going to teach a Malfoy?
"Um, not really?"
One who doesn't even understand the rareness of what he's being offered?
"Then, of course, I will tutor you privately," Professor Umbridge declares. "Such talent, Mister Malfoy, you have been truly blessed."
Albus gapes. It takes him a long moment to come back to his senses, to realize that if Professor Umbridge is teaching this year then this is the perfect opportunity to- "Professor? Can I…"
But she's already gone.
"Um, Albus?"
Malfoy. He's watching Albus stare in the direction Professor Umbridge left, which Albus really shouldn't let happen, so he turns quickly and snaps, "It's Potter to you."
Malfoy's eyes flash, but he nods slowly before saying, "I'm sorry for what I said earlier, I, uh, hope we can set aside our differences since we'll be rooming together…"
The apology's so obviously an attempt to get on Albus's good side, but Albus can't understand why Malfoy would think that would be enough when he'd, in the space of five minutes, threatened Rose, insulted Albus' own accomplishments, gotten Professor Umbridge to make them roommates, and stolen Albus' only chance of not being a disappointment to his family.
"Don't bother," Albus says, when Malfoy doesn't finish the thought. "I'll talk to my parents about this, and we won't be sharing a dorm."
Malfoy nods, obviously relieved, and says, "Okay then. Um, I guess I'll see you around?"
"Hopefully not."

Two
Albus Potter, much to Scorpius' surprise, isn't all that bad. They've been roommates, now, for nearly four months - all that Potter power apparently wasn't enough to make Professor Umbridge change her mind over their accommodations. And he's a little conceited, a little spoiled, a little ignorant of the real world, but he's also… different, from what Scorpius would've thought. He's at least a little insecure, which now that Scorpius thinks about it makes sense, given his family. He's not popular, not like he looked like that first day, not like his cousin, Rose Granger-Weasley. He wants to learn magic, which must be part of why he was so angry at Scorpius when Professor Umbridge offered to teach Scorpius. Of course, Scorpius insists that Albus be included in their classes, once he finds out.
He shares Scorpius's love of books. That's what they bonded over, at least at first.
And Scorpius is starting to realize that, maybe, none of the celebrity-children he used to be so jealous of are as one-dimensional as he used to think. Though he's only met one other, Rose Weasley, but after what happened with the house-elf child…
"Hem hem," someone - Professor Umbridge - coughs from behind him, and he whirls around to face his teacher.
Her expression is as sweet and dangerous as ever, an unpredictability that Scorpius hates about her, as he greets cautiously, "Hello, Professor. Was there-?"
"Yes, dear, in fact there is!" she says cheerfully, and her smile seems a little more genuine, now, though Scorpius doesn't let himself relax fully. "I've finally heard back from the Wizard, and he would like to meet you in person, over the holidays!"
It takes Scorpius a moment to process her words. "Meet… me?" he finally stammers. "The Wizard wants to meet me?" The Wizard, the most famous sorcerer in all the worlds, plus the ruler of their very own Oz?
"That is what I said," Professor Umbridge agrees, a little testily, though if Scorpius hadn't known her so well he wouldn't have been able to tell. "I know you were devastated, the other day, for our poor Professor Hagrid-" Scorpius barely keeps himself from gritting his teeth, because it's so obvious she doesn't mean it, that she hated Hagrid for daring be a half-human and a teacher "-but you see? One door closes, and another opens, and you'll move forward towards your dream!"
And it is Scorpius' dream, to meet the Wizard, to prove he's not what his father's legacy makes him, which helps him sound a little more sincere as he says, "I- I don't know what to say. Thank you, Professor."
"Of course, my dear."
But when he's back at his and Albus' room to tell him the news and to say goodbye, he finds his friend staring blankly, disbelievingly, at a wall.
"It's Rose," Albus admits, after some prodding. "I don't know… she's changed, somehow, in these past few months. I used to know that we'd always be together, that we'd support each other, since we're the same age and always doing the same things, and we're like a perfect pair - her strengths are my weaknesses, and vice versa. We're only cousins, but we used to be more like twins."
"But?"
"But, ever since Professor Hagrid was taken away…" ever since that house-elf child, Scorpius' mind fills in "…it's like she's avoiding me."
"Maybe she's trying to figure out who she is without you," Scorpius suggests, trying to ignore that voice in him that's saying that it's his fault for this distance between cousins. "If you've been together all your lives?"
"Maybe," Albus agrees quietly, "but… what if she never comes back? I… I don't know what I'd do without her, I don't want to lose her. I can't…"
What Albus needs right now, Scorpius decides, is proof that he can be someone, without Rose, without his family. (He ignores that part of him saying he needs his cousin back, because what if Rose said she doesn't want to go back to who she was before?) And given the opportunity, Scorpius knows that he can shine, which means-
He hands the invitation from the Wizard to Albus. "Come with me."
"What?"
"I'm going to see the Wizard, um, in the Emerald City. Come with me. If you'd like, of course, I know you've probably gone to these kinds of things a million times, and-"
"Wait," Albus says, holding up a hand and finally meeting Scorpius' gaze, eyes bright and hopeful (and beautiful). "Really?"
"Really," Scorpius confirms, smiling now, because he's helped his friend. "Next week, Monday. Meet me at the station?"
"I- Thank you."
"Of course," Scorpius says, and it's a world more genuine than Professor Umbridge's reply earlier. "I'll see you then."
"See you," Albus echoes, as his expression morphs into a full-on grin.
(A beautiful smile, Scorpius doesn't notice.)

Three
"Scorpius, what are you doing?" Albus calls, panting as he chases the glimpses of the blond head up the stairs because why does Scorpius have to be so fast? "Where are you going? Wait, stop! Slow down!"
He almost trips at the top stair, but catches himself enough to stumble through the door, which Scorpius slams shut behind him. "Scorpius-"
"The guards are coming up. We'll have to barricade the door," Scorpius interrupts, glancing about hurriedly before grabbing a broom from who-knows-where and wedges it into the doorframe.
"Scorpius, wait! Calm down, we can still fix this!" He doesn't understand why Scorpius is overreacting so much - all they did was meet the Wizard, and his new press secretary Madam Umbridge, then give those monkeys the wings they wanted to fly, right?
"Fix what?" Scorpius spits, and Albus shrinks back at the pure venom in his tone, something he's never heard directed at him before. "What d'you want me to do? Go back the Wizard and Umbridge, my tail between my legs, so I can do more magic that'll hurt anyone that's not fully human? Albus, don't tell me you support that!"
And, okay, maybe the Wizard also kind of confirmed that he's the one behind all those terrible things happening to the non-human beings, but it's not like they're that equal to humans in any of the other worlds Albus has visited, so maybe… it's better this way? And besides, it's probably not the Wizard at the head of these decisions - he's got a whole Interworld government above him, a government that includes Albus' parents, and after what they stood for in the war against Voldemort, surely they wouldn't let anyone get hurt without a reason!
And- "Careful, Scorpius," Albus adds quietly. "You're starting to sound like a rebel, questioning our government like that."
"Well maybe someone should!" Scorpius exclaims, still pacing, hands running through the silver-blond that still looks somehow perfect.
"Like your father did? Like Voldemort did?"
Scorpius flinches, even as he snarls, "Then you'd stand to the side as they hurt people like Professor Hagrid? Oh wait, you already did."
Albus is the one to flinch this time, because he did care about Professor Hagrid, it's just- "You don't know-"
"Then what was that with the monkeys just now? Albus, they're taking away their speech! They're hurting them, treating them like they're not people! You can't support that!"
"Well what are you planning to do about that?" Albus asks, because maybe, Scorpius has a point, even though it can't be as bad as he's making it sound because his parents work for the government, are above the Wizard in the system. "Work within the system, Scorpius! Make the Wizard change his mind!"
"And in the meantime, how many do you think they'll have me hurt?"
"Hem hem." It's Professor Umbridge's cough, that sounds almost as though she's besides them, and they both jump, scanning the room, the book of spells already in Scorpius' hands even though it . Except she's not there, and- "Citizens of Oz! An enemy is among us, one who must be found and captured. He is evil, son of Draco Malfoy, rumored descendent of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and responsible for the mutilation of these poor, innocent monkeys."
"Umbridge," Scorpius growls, as Albus closes his eyes and tries to think of some way out of this.
"You-"
"I'm leaving."
"You what?" Albus must have misheard, because-
"There's no place for me here, Albus," Scorpius says, a little more gently. "Umbridge has already declared me an enemy, and I won't work for them, ever. And I can't let them catch me. So I have to leave."
But no, no, no, Scorpius can't be leaving! There's a whole future Albus has got planned for them, and if Scorpius leaves he'll be hunted, like a criminal, and where will he go?
"You-"
They both flinch at another sound, loud pounding from the door, as someone shouts, "Open up! In the name of His Supreme Ozness-!"
"See?" Scorpius says, as he grabs the book of spells he'd set down moments before, finding some page to start chanting… something Albus almost recognizes.
The Levitation Spell, from before.
"What are you doing? That-"
Scorpius stops, and there's dead silence for a long moment, and Albus begins to hope… "Maybe you aren't quite that powerful-"
But then there's a broom, the same as Scorpius had used to jam the door, flying towards them, and Scorpius catches it with the grace Albus usually only sees in his brother. "Quick, get on!"
"What?" Albus says, for the dozenth time. "Scorpius-"
There's the sound of something crashing, from down the stairs, now, and the room shudders with the impact. "Come with me," Scorpius explains. "Albus. Think of what we could do, together. Please?"
"I…"
For a brief moment, Albus lets himself imagine, going with Scorpius, leaving behind all the expectations and disappointments and politics to do what, most likely, according to Scorpius and (maybe) what Albus himself feels, is right. But… that would mean leaving behind his family, leaving behind his parents and James and Lily and Rose and all his cousins and aunts and uncles and-
And becoming a public enemy, which means becoming his own family's enemy. Because what he said before is true - that what Scorpius is saying is like sedition, which is like what Voldemort wanted. And his father's famous for taking down Voldemort.
"I'm sorry," Albus finally whispers. "But I can't. I- I hope you'll be happy. But I can't…"
"I get it," Scorpius says, when Albus doesn't continue. "I… Goodbye."
"I'll see you again," Albus says quickly, fiercely. "Promise me. I'll find you, you'll find me, I don't care. But promise."
"I-"
And then the door bursts open, but by the time the dust clears and the guards storm in, by the time Albus has got a story in his head that'll, hopefully, keep him out of trouble, Scorpius is already gone.

Four
Mother.
He'd failed.
Mother.
He hadn't saved her.
Mother.
And now she's dead. Killed by a house, falling on her - by Umbridge's weather magic. Dead, with nothing left of her to mourn. Dead, because of Scorpius, because he'd spoken out and they hadn't been able to find him so she'd paid the price.
"Mother," he whispers. "Mother, please, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."
"It's not, really."
Scorpius whirls around, and there-
Albus.
Scorpius wants to run to him, wants to hug him, to let himself cry, to not have to be so strong, just for one moment, but-
He knows, all too well, what Albus has been doing, in the time since they left Hogwarts. He's on the side of the Wizard, and thus on the side of the people who've done this.
"What are you doing here?" Scorpius snarls, or tries to, instead - his voice breaks in the middle of the sentence, and it comes out too flimsy to be truly threatening.
Albus ignores the question. "It isn't, don't blame yourself-"
"I don't want to discuss this with you."
"I'm sorry, but I- I knew you'd be here. I had to see you. Scorpius-"
"Did you? And why do you think this happened?"
"I don't… know?" Albus says, but it sounds like he's trying to convince himself. "I mean, it was just an accident?"
"Really. So cyclones just appear, with no warning, and pick up a house and drop it on someone and kill them?"
"I didn't know," Albus says instead. "Please, Scorpius, I really didn't, I'm so sorry, I-"
"Hands up! In the name of the Wizard, you're under arrest!"
Scorpius curses, because Albus is really just the perfect trap, and he hadn't even noticed the guards creeping up on them, and spells take time, time he doesn't have, to cast. He punches one in the face, and the man goes down, crying, but there's too many and they've grabbed onto Scorpius' arms and trapped him, and-
"I can't believe you would sink this low," Scorpius snarls, for real this time. "To use my own mother's death to trap me, to capture me!" And, he doesn't say, to use their friendship as a distraction.
"What- What are you doing? No, I didn't know-"
"What else is new?" Though it's unlikely that Albus is telling the truth, and Scorpius wonders if, when, they ever were truly friends.
"Tie him up!" someone shouts, and Scorpius renews his attempts to escape because he has to, has to get out of here so-
"Let him go."
They all, even the guards around Scorpius, freeze, turning towards the sound to see-
"Rose?"
"Rose? What-" Albus begins, before cutting off as she pushes her gun harder against the back of his head.
"I said, let Scorpius go," she repeats, not a tremble of fear or uncertainty that it's her cousin's life she's threatening, no hint of that politic girl he'd met at Hogwarts that first day nor that loyal Captain of the Guard he'd once thought she was, and every bit the girl who'd helped him rescue that lion cub, the girl who'd made her way fearlessly into Scorpius' base and told him she could spy. Why is she breaking her cover now? "Or explain to all of Oz how Albus Potter was slain, right before the Wizard's guards."
"Rose-"
"Shut up," she snaps. "And let him go."
Half expecting it to be some sort of trap as the guards release him and slowly back away, Scorpius catches the broom Rose throws at him, and then-
"Go."
"Not without you!" Scorpius says quickly, because he knows what they'll do to Rose if he leaves her, because he's just lost Mother and he can't lose her too (not when he's already lost Albus)… And why is Rose even here to save him, when it's his mistake, his lack of foresight, that's put him in trouble?
"I said, go! Now!"
But there's no way Scorpius can see that'll let them both escape, and he hasn't got leverage that'll let Rose escape, and the guards are stepping slowly towards him again as he hesitates further, and if he waits any longer-
"Scorpius!"
"Do it!" Albus shouts as well, even as his voice trembles, though Scorpius can't tell if it's because of the gun, because Rose is choosing to help Scorpius, because of the trap, or because he's telling Scorpius to leave, again-
No. He won't think of that.
He hesitates a moment longer, before he pushes off, but he's glancing back once he's off the ground, and so he meets Albus' gaze once more as his former friend mouths, I'll protect her. There's no doubt he's talking about Rose, and Scorpius kind of believes him, because it's so obvious that Albus still cares about Rose despite that she's chosen Scorpius' side, because Rose is more politically important than Scorpius, as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger's daughter.
But who, Scorpius wants to ask, will protect you?
-oOo-
Five
"She's dead."
It's more to show how Scorpius has changed, because he definitely wouldn't have noticed Albus' approach, back before, especially over the sound of the little girl's sobs from the other room - which is another thing, because Albus definitely wouldn't have guessed that his friend would be the type to kidnap and hold hostage, even if the little girl's wearing, and refusing to take off, the shoes that are the only thing Scorpius has left of his mother, but they're only shoes-
Which is when Scorpius' actual words register. She's dead - No. No! Not… Rose?
Scorpius almost seems to read Albus' mind, though it must be (probably is?) just Albus' expression, as he nods and confirms. "Rose." There's a slip of paper in his hand -
"How? I had them take her off world-"
"And how easy do you think it is to sabotage an off-world flight?" Scorpius says, his voice still calmer than Albus has ever seen him, calmer than he knows Scorpius must be feeling inside. "Who brought her-" he nods towards the still-present sobs "-here, from Earth?"
"They couldn't have - our family-"
"A 'tragic accident'. Something they couldn't have prevented."
"No."
"It's a message. A final warning. For me."
"Scorpius-"
"I'm surrendering."
"You… what?" Scorpius is going to give up, now? "They won't let you-"
"I know. But I- I can't lose anyone else."
Albus feels horrible for even thinking it… but who even does Scorpius have left to lose? He knows his former friend never had many people, only his mother through his childhood, with his father in prison, then Rose somehow, which leaves… the other rebels? But Albus can't see them letting their leader give himself up. Which leaves-
Why is Scorpius watching him like that?
And oh, oh. Albus himself?
"Scorpius-"
But Scorpius is already glancing away, as he says, staring at something in the corner, "You can't be found here. You have to go."
"No." So maybe Scorpius doesn't want Albus to die for him, but Albus won't let Scorpius die either, not when he's already l-lost Rose, not when it's Albus' fault they all hate him, Albus' fault for standing to the side instead of joining him against the Wizard, against Umbridge- "I won't let you. I'll-"
"You must. Leave, now. Before it's too late."
"No. I'll tell them all the truth, I'll clear your name-"
"You can't. They'll turn against you, the Wizard and Umbridge have done too much damage, you can't publicly ally yourself with me."
"But-"
"Work within the system," Scorpius says, a ghost of a smile on his face. "I… I didn't change things, not as much as I could've. But you, you can do all I couldn't do."
"I don't care," Albus tells him. "Not if it means you'll be…" He can't say it. It feels like if he does, it'll be more true, and-
"Please, Albus. If you've ever cared about me-"
"No," Albus interrupts. "No, you don't get to use that card. There has to be another way." He breathes out slowly. "Why can't we just, like, start over?" Scorpius hesitates, and in that instant, Albus knows he's got a plan - maybe even something to do with what Albus just said. "Tell me."
"Albus-"
"Tell me."
"…How do you feel about… faking your death?"

They're at the meeting spot almost half a day early, just in case Albus shows up early, blending in with the hundreds of shoppers in Diagon Alley - because sometimes, the best way to hide is in plain sight. They can't lurk around Flourish and Blotts too often, of course, but Scorpius will take suspicious glances and annoyed shopkeepers over the possibility of missing Albus.
But they're supposed to meet up at noon, and as one, two, four, five hours pass past the lunch hour, as Flourish and Blotts closes for the day…
No. Albus is coming. He has to be coming. Because if he isn't, if he betrayed them after all-
But it's clear that Rose is thinking the same as him: "I don't think he's coming, Scorpius."
"No. He's late, that's all."
There's a long pause before she speaks again. "Maybe you shouldn't have told him-"
"We owed him the truth."
Another pause. "Seven hours, Scorpius…"
"You know he's never on time-"
"I resent that!"
