The full moon in the skies above the Fire Nation lit the beach below the vacation house. A pair of eyes watched the man on the beach as he prepared his long paddle board by the gently lapping waves. He continued to look over his equipment before packing a few things up in a satchel and grabbing his oar. The eyes on him didn't move, ignoring the sound of someone else coming out on the balcony. "Hey," The other person whispered sleepily, their arms snaking around their waist and their lips on the nape of her neck. "Couldn't sleep?" The original watcher shook their head. Both eyes were now on the man as he pushed the board out into the water and hopped on the board with ease as he began to paddle. "What in the Spirits is he doing?"
"He's going to see her," Her voice was void of emotion. "He's never missed an opportunity to see her…"
The man frowned, "Is he going to see-" She nodded before he could get her name out. "If he wanted to see her so bad he could have asked me to help."
Her hand went back instinctively to rub his bald head, "You know my brother...just as hard headed as our Dad."
"And his sister," He mumbled against her skin, earning a slap on the back of his head. He placed a small kiss on her neck as an apology before resting his chin on her shoulder. "At least the waters are calm." The board had already made quite the distance away from them. "Do you want to follow him just in case?"
She shook her head, "No...he's better in the hands of La than us. I just wish we could do something to ease his mind…" She took his hand and walked back into the vacation home as the man continued to paddle. With the rhythmic slosh of the water echoing from the paddle, the man hummed a tune he had heard the Fire Lord's Uncle singing in his tea shop. He looked over his back, the lights from the shore were barely visible now. Pulling the paddle from the water, he set it perpendicular to the board and grabbed his satchel. He placed two sticks of incense between three small rocks, using flint to lit them and softly blew out the flame. Looking over the calm sea, it looked almost like home with the bright moon reflecting off the water as if it were the snow of the Water Tribe. He smiled before lowering his head to the board, his hands outstretched against the board as well on either side of the incense and began to mumble a prayer. He closed his eyes and sat back upright, took a deep breath. Slowly letting it out, he opened his eyes to see the glowing Goddess on the other side of the board. Her face remained the same as the last day he saw her. The last day he held her.
"Sokka."
"Yue."
"You look as radiant as ever," His eyes couldn't help but to look her up and down. Her white dress flowed past her feet, sashes moving around her like the waves below her but now her long silk like hair was free of any braid or tie and down her back.
A half smile broke on her face, the usual stoic face now looked like she had in the North. "It's only been a full cycle Sokka. Nothing about me is going to be different."
The dreamy look in his eye hadn't left, his smile reminded her of a lot of the big dreamers that prayed under her light. With thousands of prayers that come for Tui every night, there was no other worshipper of the Moon Spirit than Sokka. "Every time I get to see your face, I fall for you all over again."
She closed the distance between them and held his face in her hands, "Sokka-"
"I know," He stopped her from reminding him. "I know…" His eyes fell for a second before returning to her azure orbs, "I've made my choice and I'm sticking to it."
Yue's lips found him for a moment, but Sokka's arms wrapped around her and held her in place as he deepened the kiss. A minor protest attempted to escape her but she easily melted into the kiss, her arms going around his neck. His heart could have stopped at this moment and Sokka would die happily as he held his lost love in what seemed like years. He hadn't been so bold in their prior meetings, but he couldn't wait any longer. Their lips finally slowed, he placed one last kiss before resting his forehead against hers. "You know, the Spirits have devastated many men who would even think about taking advantage of a Spirit like that…" She playfully teased in a lower whisper.
He grinned, "May La drown me in his seas over and over for stealing away the beautiful Moon Spirit."
"He's not really into sarcasm Sokka, he might take you up on that."
Sokka looked into her eyes, "I will fight every Spirit in the Spirit World and back to let the world know that the Moon will always hold my heart."
Her eyes welled up, she wiped away the tears pointlessly and rested her head against his chest. Sokka had never felt higher than feeling her against him, her arms around his waist. "You could have any girl in any of the Nations-"
"But I only have eyes for one," He finished, his face pressed against the top of her head and taking in her scent.
Yue gently shook against him in laughter, "Do you think I really don't know about the other girls Sokka?"
Sokka didn't move but knew his heart was giving him away as it pounded against his ribcage right next to her face. "I mean...that was years ago…"
"15 cycles isn't years Sokka," She mumbled against his chest. "You'd actually be surprised at how many times that girl has prayed about you." He was taken back a bit, not a word had been said between him and Suki ever since they broke up. She frowned, "Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything."
"With what little time we have together, I'd rather not talk about exes," He kissed the top of her head. Sokka closed his eyes, attempting to take in as much as he could with the end to their meeting closing in on them. They sat in silence as he stroked her back with his thumb, trying to ingrain the feeling of her body against his in his mind. He kept the sorrowful thoughts about their past at bay, he would have enough time when she was gone to beat himself up.
She shifted in his arms, looking up towards the sky, her azure gaze turning towards him. "Sokka…our time together is too short yet again."
His arms only held her tighter, "I'm going to get you back, I promise." His whispers only brought tears out to roll down her face. "I'll steal the Moon from the sky whether it's in this life or the next."
A sad smile formed on her face after wiping the tears from her cheeks, "You definitely have the confidence of some of the greatest warriors from the South, Prince Sokka."
He choked out a laugh as his own tears began to fall, "I confirmed that I'm technically a Prince, so I stand by my title."
She pressed her lips against his one last time, "It's my final offer to choose a happy life."
"It's not a happy life without you," He went in for another kiss but her once solid form went translucent, his stomach dropping as she slowly began to disappear, still never used to having her go. She mouthed a few words before completely dissipating, his heart leapt as he registered her words: I love you. Sokka fell back on the board, the emptiness after seeing her was always the hardest part. He closed his eyes and took a few steady breaths as a gentle breeze started to pick up. The waters around him began to grow restless, rocking his board back and forth. He opened his eyes again, staring at the powerful full orb in the sky before whispering his admiration back. An unnatural wave formed below him, sending him back towards the island he had paddled from. As the board approached the coast, the wave dropped in size and crashed against the shore. Sokka's board slowed as it slid against the sands before coming to a stop against the cliff that held the vacation house, the waters receding the beach as soon as it came. He sat up and took a breath, attempting to gather himself before going back to the house.
He placed the board by the front entrance and slung the satchel over his shoulder. Slipping back into the house quietly was of no issue, his bare feet barely made a sound as he crept down the hall. He got to his room and turned the knob, only for the door across the way to fly open with the familiar sapphire gaze to freeze him in his place. "Sokka…"
"Spirits Katara, luckily I went to the bathroom before you decided to scare the hell out of me," Sokka held his hand to his chest, working out a lie as quickly as he could. Her face told him she was not buying it. "Well anyways, I'm going to get back to bed." Sokka attempted to push past the lie and rush into the room.
"I saw you Sokka." He froze. His love life sans Suki had been a sore subject between the two.
He looked back towards her, easily standing up against her dominant demeanor. "Use the bathroom?" Her eyes narrowed.
"If you need help...just ask, Aang would gladly-"
"Thanks," He interrupted her. "But I should be fine." The last thing he needed was the Avatar stopping his pursuit of the Moon Spirit. "'Nite Katara." Sokka slipped into his room and shut the door quickly. He stripped down to his shorts before sliding in bed, his window had a perfect view of the waters below with the shimmer glow of the Moon. Sokka took one last look at his love before falling into a deep sleep.
