Gon was always able to tell when Killua had been crying in the middle of the night. Why? Because Gon would always wake up with a warm weight snuggled up against his chest and a soft, porcelain-pale face pressed into the crook of his neck.
Those were the mornings in which Gon wouldn't ask any questions because he knew he wouldn't get answers. He'd just wrap one arm around Killua's waist and slide his free hand up to play with soft, fluffy locks of curly white hair.
This had happened many times before, often enough that Gon had learned to anticipate it. He hated that his precious kitten was sad, but he also loved that he was the source of Killua's comfort. Killua was not an affectionate person by default because he'd never really been taught how to give and receive love. The fact that he turned to Gon whenever he genuinely needed something made Gon feel special.
However... the one time Gon wished Killua was able to sleep through the night was, of course, the night before Christmas.
Christmas was supposed to be fun and lighthearted, completely free of all the nasty troubles of the world. It was honestly the best day of the year, in Gon's opinion. He liked having an excuse to buy heartfelt gifts for the people he loved. Usually he only bought a gift for Mito-san, but now that he was far away from Whale Island, he had decided to get something for Killua instead.
Gon could only hope that his gift would cheer Killua up, because on Christmas morning, Gon woke up to the familiar feeling of Killua lying across his chest. That could only mean one thing. The young Zoldyck had cried himself to sleep in the dead of night, unbeknownst to Gon, who was a master of falling asleep so quickly it was almost inhumane.
"Mmf. G'morning, Killua." Gon mumbled drowsily, reaching out and tucking a wayward curl of white hair behind Killua's ear.
"I'm not ready to wake up yet, go away." Killua batted sluggishly at Gon's hand in return, but he was still so sleepy that he missed entirely and wound up swatting at the air harmlessly.
"We don't have to get up just yet, you know. We can stay like this for a little while, but only if Killua wants to." Gon reasoned, smiling fondly at the adorable creature resting on top of him. He looped a bronze arm around the other boy's lithe figure, caressing the length of his back. "Do you remember what today is?"
Killua shifted around a bit, trying to make himself more comfortable, before shaking his head ever so slightly. "Not really. I swear to God, it had better not be another one of your weird, made-up things like National Puppy Day or anything like that. If you say it's National anything,I'm gonna clobber you."
Gon giggled and lifted his head, tipping his chin forward to kiss the top of Killua's head. "No, no, nothing like that. I swear today is actually important. You must've had a really bad night, if you've forgotten. I've been talking about today for like, six months."
"Cut me some slack, baka. You know I'm no good with important dates. I even forgot my own birthday once." the young Zoldyck rolled his sapphire blue eyes, nuzzling his face into Gon's warm collarbone.
This was absolutely true. Last year, Gon and Alluka had spent hours upon hours setting up a surprise party for Killua's fifteenth birthday. They had invited a handful of friends, spent all afternoon making a bunch of food (at least half of which contained unhealthy amounts of chocolate,) and decorated the hotel room they'd been staying in with balloons. However, they damn near gave Killua a heart attack when he walked in the room, because he'd forgotten his birthday entirely.
Gon signed contentedly, combing his fingers through unbelievably soft, fluffy white hair. "That's okay. I'm not upset."
"So, what day is it?" Killua asked, lifting his head to give the bronze-skinned boy a blank stare.
"It's Christmas, Killua."
"Oh." Gon watched Killua's expression change from confused to blatantly shocked in the span of about five seconds. Killua clapped one hand over his mouth. "There's no way that's today."
"Trust me, it's today. I've been planning for this since July, so I'm pretty sure I'm capable of keeping track of the exact date." Gon laughed before pushing himself up into a sitting position, keeping one arm wrapped securely around Killua's waist, pulling the Zoldyck up with him. Now, Killua was perched in Gon's lap, still pressed up against him like a very clingy kitten. "It's okay if you forgot to get me something again. I don't need presents because I already know you love me a whole bunch, and because I understand your family never really celebrated Christmas before."
"You're not gonna believe me, but I actually did remember to get you something. I just forgot that I had to give it to you today. I seriously thought Christmas wasn't til next month." Killua replied, evenly.
"Awww, Killua's so sweet!" Gon exclaimed, his whole face lighting up. "I got you something, too!"
"Baka." Killua blushed a delicate pink and buried his face in Gon's chest to hide it. "I don't need gifts either, you know. I'm perfectly fine exactly as I am."
"But I like giving you gifts! It makes me happy!" Gon chirped, running his palm down the nape of the other boy's neck. "Especially because you get all flustered and goofy like this. You're just so cute!"
"Hmph. Stupid." Killua insisted, plunking his head down on Gon's shoulder to pout.
"Killuaaaaaa..." Gon hummed, grinning from ear to ear and peppering the top of Killua's head with kisses. "Killua's so beautiful. I love Killua so much."
"Shut up." Killua snapped, initially getting flustered all over again but melting immediately after. "Love you too, dummy."
A few moments passed before Gon decided it was time to get up. He noticed how the other boy was falling asleep again and decided it would be rude to wake Killua up on Christmas morning, especially after he'd had a bad night.
"Ne, Killua? Wrap your arms around me, I'm gonna carry you out to the living room."
Killua mumbled something about being able to walk under his breath but still complied, reaching up and looping his thin arms around Gon's neck. Gon slid one arm around Killua's shoulders and the other under his legs, sliding off the bed and carrying him bridal style. Killua pressed his face into Gon's shoulder, completely relaxing and allowing himself to be held.
"Sooooo pretty." Gon murmured, pecking Killua's delightfully soft lips before making his way out of their shared bedroom to the living room.
It was a fairly simple room, with a small bookcase in one corner and a brownish leather couch pressed against the far wall. Directly across from the couch, there was a brick fireplace that crackled with a warm orange light, radiating a pleasant heat that reminded Gon of warm summer breezes on Whale Island. He smiled happily and set Killua down on the couch, grabbing a silvery-white throw blanket that had been draped haphazardly over the edge and wrapping it around Killua's narrow, bony shoulders.
"There you go, Killua. I'll make sure Alluka gets breakfast when she wakes up, kay? You just stay right there and get some sleep." Gon said, lightly stroking Killua's soft, pale cheek with just his fingertips.
"I can do it myself, ya know..." Killua muttered, obviously half asleep.
"I know you can, but... Killua needs his rest." Gon insisted, pressing his lips to the other boy's forehead before standing up straight and making his way into the small kitchen to see what sort of breakfast materials were in the fridge.
He settled on bagels because he knew how much Alluka liked bagels. He also decided to make some scrambled eggs in case she was feeling picky about her food. It took Gon somewhere between twenty minutes and half an hour to make enough eggs for Alluka, Killua, and himself. Somewhere along the way, Alluka came into the kitchen with a little doll clenched in one hand, the other balled into a fist and rubbing her eyes sleepily.
"Good morning, Gon." she yawned. Her thick black hair was an unruly mess this early in the morning, the beads and headband that she usually wore nowhere to be seen.
"There you are! How'd you sleep, Alluka?" Gon asked, turning away from his skillet of half-cooked eggs for a moment so he could give the little girl a hug. "Merry Christmas, by the way."
"Merry Christmas to you, too! I slept alright, I guess. But hey, why's Onii-chan asleep on the couch? Did he not go to bed like he was supposed to?" Alluka asked, peering around Gon's side at the scrambled eggs on the stove.
"He did go to bed, don't worry. He was just extremely sleepy this morning, so I figured it would be best to let him get some more rest." Gon replied, smiling gently and returning his attention to the eggs. "I hope you're hungry because I've got enough eggs here to choke a hippo."
Alluka giggled and nodded her head yes, smoothing down the hem of her nightgown with her free hand and shifting her weight from one foot to the other childishly.
She was the only Zoldyck lucky enough to have not been trained the same way all her siblings were. Anyone unfortunate enough to be born into the Zoldyck family was subjected to cruel, harsh abuse, like torture training, poison resistance training, and any other sort of learnable skill set that might benefit an assassin. However, Alluka had been deemed too powerful for her own good. Even though she hadn't been abused in that aspect, she had been locked up in a room all by herself with nobody but the butlers to keep her company for several years.
Now that she was living with Gon and Killua instead, she was still getting used to being allowed to leave her room as she pleased. It was so strange to her.
She decided to go see if her older brother was still sleeping and wandered into the living room, leaving Gon alone in the kitchen.
Gon finished making breakfast and piled three plates with scrambled eggs and bagels before calling Alluka back so she could take her plate.
"Don't worry about the third one, I'll carry it. That one's for Killua. Is he awake yet?" Gon asked, taking a plate in each hand and following Alluka into the living room.
"I don't think so." Alluka shook her head no.
"That's fine. We'll have to wait for a little bit to give each other presents, though. I don't wanna do it while he's sleeping, that wouldn't be very nice." Gon said, lowering his voice as they entered the dimly lit living room so as to avoid waking the sleeping figure on the couch.
Alluka nodded her agreement, sitting down beside Killua's limp form and beginning to wolf down the contents of her plate. Gon set Killua's plate on the coffee table and sat down on the floor, feeling the heat of the lit fireplace against his back.
"I think this is the first Christmas we've spent without Kurapika-san." Alluka remarked, stabbing her fork into her scrambled eggs and popping it into her mouth.
"He couldn't make it this time, I'm not really sure why." Gon shrugged noncommittally, taking a bite of his bagel.
"You two talk so loudly that I could find you both in a maze blindfolded." Killua grumbled, rolling over onto his side so he could glare at Gon. "Especially you, baka."
Gon grinned and spread his hands in a helpless gesture, setting his plate in his lap to do so. "I'm sorry, Killua!"
"Hmph. You better be." Killua sat up and started reaching for the plate of food on the coffee table, blanket draped loosely around his shoulders.
"Don't be mad at Gon, Onii-chan." Alluka scolded, lightly swatting Killua's arm to get his attention. "He's been nice all morning! He even made breakfast for us!"
"Alright, alright."
A little while passed before all three of them finished their food. Once that happened and all the plates had been put in the sink, Gon darted off for a moment to find the little pile of wrapped presents. When he came back, he was carrying an armful of them. He'd only gotten Killua and Alluka one thing each, but they'd both also done the same.
"Look, everybody! Presents!" Gon announced cheerfully, plopping the six gifts down unceremoniously and turning to face Killua and Alluka.
Alluka was beaming with excitement. Killua just looked... Extremely nervous. He didn't know if Gon would like his Christmas gift or not.
"Here! This one's for you, Killua! It's from me!" Gon exclaimed, handing a neat little wrapped package with a blue bow on top to the snowy-haired boy.
"Oh, um... thanks." Killua took it and got his claws out so he could tear at the wrapping paper, managing to get it undone much more quickly than an average person would've.
"Killua. That's cheating." Gon remarked, scoldingly.
Killua rolled his eyes. "Nothing's considered cheating when it comes to opening presents, baka."
There was a little white box underneath the wrapping paper. Killua turned it over in his hands before carefully sliding it open. A silver bracelet fell out into his palm. It was perhaps the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. The band was about eight centimeters thick, composed of pure silver, with spiraling patterns carved into the surface and painted black so they stood out. There were three little sapphire charms dangling from the underside of the bracelet. All three of them were shaped like little lighting bolts.
"Oh. T-Thank you, Gon. I love it." Killua said, realizing that he was expected to say something. He tentatively wormed his hand into the bracelet and slid it onto his wrist, deciding right then and there that he was gonna wear it forever.
"I love you, Killua. Merry Christmas." Gon beamed, going to give his boyfriend a hug.
"What I got you isn't nearly as nice, but I still hope you'll like it regardless." Killua replied, returning the hug wholeheartedly.
"Oh, I'm sure I'll love it! Where is it?" Gon turned to the pile of gifts.
Alluka had somehow already gotten into hers without them noticing, which left only three presents sitting on the floor, undisturbed. The one wrapped in bright green wrapping paper was to Gon from Killua. Gon picked it up gingerly and began unwrapping it, obviously eager to see what his beloved had gotten him. He was certain that he'd like it no matter what.
Killua was a nervous wreck, fidgeting and squirming around anxiously. He was almost afraid that Gon wouldn't like it, even though he knew this fear was extremely irrational.
The green wrapping paper tore away in layers to reveal a simple golden locket, circular in shape and hanging on a thick gold chain.
"Ooh! What's this?" Gon popped the locket open and froze.
Inside was a small picture of him and Killua out on their first date together. They'd gone out to the meadow to watch the sunset, then they'd gone to a fancy restaurant for dinner. The photo was taken while they were sitting together in the meadow. Gon smiled. He remembered how nervous they'd both been around each other. He hadn't known that Bisky, who walked them both out to the meadow before leaving, had paused for long enough to take a picture of them.
"It's beautiful. Thank you, Killua."
Killua blushed and folded his arms, turning up his chin indignantly. "No need to thank me, baka, it's the least I could do."
"I know, I know. But thank you, anyway."
A/N: aiiiiiiii merry Christmas, everyone! Especially you, Windy! I hope you liked your gift! I'm sorry it wasn't nearly as descriptive as some of my other work, I did my best. Thanks for being such a kind, supportive friend. I appreciate you and everything that you do, hope you have a wonderful Christmas!
