"I want to go out there and help!"
"Kara. That will get you in danger."
"Yeah, but Kal, uhm, Clark does it too."
"He is a grown man."
"I'm a grown woman, Alex!"
The sisters sat in the loft, bickering as to whether or not allow Kara to be a hero. Kara had been insisting for a whole hour, and she knew Alex was looking out for her, but she knew that this was her calling. It had always been.
She saw what her cousin was doing and she also wanted to help. She needed to help. She desperately wanted to save the people of this world. She couldn't save Krypton, but she can save Earth.
"Please, Alex. I'll give you anything you want."
Alex stared at Kara, the latter giving her favourite pleading pout. The staring contest went on for a little while longer, before Alex sighed, "Alright, fine. I'll talk to Mom about it."
Kara whooped, "YES! Thank you so much, sis! You're the best!"
"You owe me one."
"Aand, I take that back."
That feeling of freedom. When had she last felt like this?
She breathed in the cool night air, as she floated way up in the clouds. She had only just returned to her loft and turned the telly on when she heard, "Live broadcast! We have news that a plane that was supposed to land in National City tonight from Orlando is facing problems with its gears. It seems to be heading towards the airport without any signs of slowing down."
Kara's heart stopped short. Orlando? That's the plane Alex was on. She had left on a 'business trip' a few days back and Kara had been anticipating her return. She didn't want it to be like this.
Kara sped to the closet as she pulled on her new suit. She placed her glasses on the table as she took off, flying out the window.
"Please make it, please make it, please . . . "
She pulled herself to a halt. The plane was indeed not stopping. And it's left engine had already caught fire.
Oh no, Kara thought.
She glanced towards the front of the plane. The pilot and co-pilot were desperately trying to slow the plane down.
Kara flew to the front of the plane, catching it with her hands. The metal was warm. She looked around frantically. The closest place that she could land the plane without hurting anyone was the sea.
Her hands strained under the weight of the plane. Her muscles crying out in pain. She opposed the motion of the plane, pushing it toward the water. When she realised that she couldn't seem to do anything at that end, she flew toward the back of the plane.
She blew at the flaming engine with her powerful lungs and freeze breath, as she diverted the plane's path. The flames lessened. The engine stopped roaring.
She held her breath.
Splash! The plane crashed into the sea, cushioned by Kara's strength. As she resurfaced, she gulped in a huge breath of air. She had done it. She had saved everyone on board the flight.
The world shook as she heard the clapping, the whooping. People were applauding her for saving them. She had never felt happier. Never felt more thrilled. She gave them all a nod of appreciation and affirmation, before she took to the skies, heading back toward her home.
"Please tell me that wasn't you."
Hadn't Alex seen it? Wasn't she on the plane earlier?
"Of course it was me, Alex! I flew so fast, the wind felt so great on my face. The rescue felt great," Kara countered, hoping Alex would be happy for her.
"Mom's so gonna kill me . . . "
"You haven't told her?"
"You only told me last week! We haven't even been able to visit her yet. When she sees your face all over the news, she's gonna have my head."
Kara let out a huge sigh. She loved it. Probably more than she should.
"Where'd you even get the suit?"
"The costume? Winn helped me design it."
Alex stopped short, "Winn? As in, your friend from CatCo.?"
Kara nodded.
"Why would you bring anyone else into this?" Alex half-shouted, before she took in a huge breath, "Okay, who else knows?"
"Kal, Winn, you, James . . . "
"Who's James?"
"Kal - Clark's friend from the Daily Planet. Turns out, Kal told him about me."
"He did?"
Kara just nodded. She knew better than to get on the bad side of her overprotective sister.
"Right," Alex let out another breath, "Now we have to wait and see how the media sees this. How Cat Grant, especially, sees this."
Kara walked into the office, her body aching and stiff from the night before.
"Hey, Kara. Saw you on the news yesterday."
Kara shushed him, "Winn! Don't say it so loudly!"
Winn looked slightly shocked, mouthing, "Sorry."
"Good morning, Miss Grant," Kara greeted her boss as she walked in, "I got you exactly what you texted me. A 'Bulletproof Coffee'."
"You're late. And awfully chirpy," Miss Grant said to Kara.
"I-I'm sorry."
"Put the drink here, just get me one every hour. I want to write about Supergirl."
"Super-who?"
"Kerah, did you not see the news yesterday?" Miss Grant glanced at her assistant in a with 'seriously?' look.
"I - no?"
"A new superhero showed up in National City last night and saved a plane from a crash."
"And y-you've named her already?"
"Well, since she didn't provide a name, I took it upon myself to name her. And I chose the name Supergirl. A girl with the powers of Superman."
"Why . . . a girl? Why not a woman? Like . . . Super-Woman?"
"What's wrong with 'girl'? Tell me, Kerah, are you a girl?I'm a girl. And your boss, and powerful, and rich, and hot, and smart . . . "
Kara just stood there with her mouth agape, unable to say anything.
"Oh, for goodness sake, Kerah. Don't just stand there, much less with your mouth hanging open like that. Give me one good reason I shouldn't fire you right here, right now."
Just then, James walked in, "Miss Grant."
"James. You are interrupting a very carefully worded termination right now."
"Well, Kara and I have a source that sighted the 'Girl of Steel', and, actually it was Kara's friend. We, well, she managed to convince her to give us this."
James pulled out a picture from the folder. 'Supergirl' had just taken off, but the image was clear, even for one taken at night.
"You got a clean shot of Supergirl?"
Kara nodded, smiling sheepishly.
Why did James have to help you tell me? Take credit for whatever you did," she turned to James, "Hand it to me."
She faced Kara again, "Next time someone else takes the credit instead of you, I'll fire you and promote them. Congratulations, Kerah Danvers, you earned yourself another day. Now. Leave me. And remember to bring me my Bulletproof Coffee every hour!"
Kara's mouth snapped shut. Nodding, she backed out of Cat Grant's office. She knew better than to argue.
As she and James strode out of the office, she turned to him and mouthed, "Thank you for saving me from Miss Grant's wrath."
He gave her a grin that seemed to say, "No problem, but solve it yourself the next time."
"You let her do what?"
"Mom, Mom, let me explain."
"No, Alexandra. You promised me you'd keep Kara safe. Tell me why you're letting her do this!" Eliza chided her daughter.
"Mom! What about what Kara wants? Don't you care what she wants?"
"Of course I do, but this is going too far!"
Kara just looked upon them. She groaned, saying, "I'm gonna go for a walk. Be right back."
As Kara stepped out, she took off, and floating in the cool night air, she observed the fast-paced city below her.
All she wanted was to be a hero. All she wished for was to help.
That was the last thing she thought before she felt a dart hit her shoulder. Kryptonite.
[A/N: I'm going with the flow. As you can see, I took some scenes from the Supergirl Pilot episode. I needed them.]
