Chapter 19

.

Sydney called Dewey, and the killer was indeed telling the truth. When they analyzed the bodies Tamika Sanchez was the most recent corpse. She dissapeared just before school started, Hanson and Johnny were part of that investogation and evidently covered it up. Tamika's father Miguel was brought in for questioning on the morning of the 31st. As Dewey looked at Miguel's file, he became more of a suspect. His motive was obvious, he wanted to murdr the people who killed his daughter. When Tamika dissapeared, Miguel was given leave from his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Before this, Miguel was involved in certain, instances, namely the torture of suspected taliban insurgents. Now he had been given a psychiatric leave from the military, noone could really be expected to operate at 100% after something like that. Dewey didn't like to interrogate a grieing father, but it was neccessary now. Sydney was helping with this, wearing sunglasses and nursing her hangover.

.

Miguel: Those bastards murdered my daughter, made it seem like she just ran away.

Dewey: I'm very sorry for your loss.

Miguel: My wife was fighting cancer when Tamika dissapeared, she died not ever knowing for certain.

Sydney: If it helps those who did it are all either dead or heding for Death Row.

Miguel: Not all of them, heard one was released last night.

Dewey: We have no evidence that David was involved in your daughter's death. Believe me we looked.

Miguel: You want to ask, just ask.

Dewey: Okay, did you murder Amanda and Greg?

Miguel: Yes.

.

This answer suprised Dewey. He had asked it of many suspects. Almost everyone gave some version of "No" whether they were guilty or not. But a guy who admitted murder so quickly, that was unusual.

.

Miguel: They murdered my daughter, would have just walked if I told the police. Anyway they had it coming. I stalked them, saw those three deputies at the farm, plotting other murders. They woud have raped and murdered Amy if you two hadn't gotten their so quickly.

Dewey: Why'd you harass Mary?

Miguel: Given this town's history, I wante everyone to think it was just another psychopath on the loose. Couldn't take the chance I'd get caught before I was done.

Sydney: That why you stalked Kalil too?

Miguel: Yes.

Sydney: And those homophobic insults you gave to him?

Miguel: I'm truley sorry about that. I just figured that a psychopath would probably be a homophobe.

Sydney: And your threats to kill me?

Miguel: What.

Dewey: Mr Sanchez, my friend made up the threats to Kalil. I can understand why you'd wouldn't want the person who avenged your daughter's murder to be punished. But whoever this person is, they've threatened Sydney. I know you don't want an innocent person's blood on your hands. So, I'll ask you again, did you murder Greg or Amanda?

Miguel: No, but as far as I'm concerned whoever killed those two did this world a favor. They were the real psychopaths, they had it coming.

Dewey: Maybe, but that's not your decision to make. We're holding you for 24 hours, during which time I'll order a psychiatric evaluation. And if you have any information that could save lives, now's the time to mention it.

Miguel: Nothing I can think of.
