Chapter 1: Castle Wyrven's fall

~scotland, 994 A.D~

Castle Wyvern was under attack by Hakon and his troops aiming to claim the spoils within. One of the troops spoke to another standing next to a catapult

"Taking a castle full of gargoyles and near nightfall, this is crazy and Hakon knows it." The two looked to the top of the tower to see a group of stone gargoyles posed as decorations.

Hakon grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him around to face him "no my friend, that's not crazy….."

The troop suddenly felt extreme pain in his stomach and looked down to see Hakon had stabbed him

"Questioning my sanity while I'm within earshot is crazy." he watched as the troop fell to the ground dead before shouting, "I say those things are not but chiseled stone! And even if they aren't, it's worth the risk for the plunder within! ATTACK!"

The troops began to charge into the castle using battering ras and wooden towers to reach higher levels.

Hekal jumped onto one of the walls and gestured for a group to follow him to the highest tower. They each grabbed a hooked rope, tossed them up, got a solid hold, and climbed up. None of them realizing the sun was falling past the horizon.

Hakon grasped the edge of the tower and began to pull himself up. As he did this he noticed that the stone gargoyle that he was climbing up next to began to crack. He was shocked to see the stone shatter and its feet flexed its claws.

The stone skin of Goliath shattered off as he shifted his body a bit. He opened his eyes to see the castle was being invaded and one of them was dangling on the edge right next to him. He reached over and grabbed the man by the wrist and stood up while holding the man in the air. "You are trespassing."

The troops that invaded the castle all paused at the fact that the gargoyles that were scattered in the courtyard all began to move and stand, glaring at them with glowing white eyes.

Hakon pulled out his sword and took a swipe at the creature that held him. However much to his shock, it grabbed his sword before snapping it. What he could see was that the creature bled from the sword wound and this gave him hope that the invasion would still be in his favor. "Fight men! They are not invincible!" he looked down to see his troops continue the attack. He was jolted out of his reverie when he felt himself being flung away. He screamed as he fell from the height of the tower. To his fortune, one of the ropes used to scale the tower swung close enough for him to grab and he swung down to the lower levels. He saw that there were no soldiers around and looked down to the courtyard to see that his troops were now on the losing side as the gargoyles were disposing of them. He knew that this was now a lost cause but he did not want to leave empty-handed. He was about to run off to find some treasure until he heard a deep growl from behind him. Turning around he saw that another gargoyle was coming out of a doorway. This one walking on all fours and was more animal than monster. He saw that it was about to ounce and he dodged the left and saw the wall he was next to gain deep claw marks. In a panic, he ran towards the doorway that the beast came through only to stop dead in his tracks. As from the shadows, a pair of glowing red eyes glared at him before its form became clear.

A female gargoyle, with bluish-grey skin and long red hair, spread out her wings and stood over him. "Face me, human. If you dare." she showed her fangs as she hissed at him, causing him to flee back outside.

Hakon paused as he saw that the beast gargoyle had stopped him. Behind him was the female, in front of him was the beast.

*thump crack*

He looked to his left to see another gargoyle crawling down the wall. This one however was much smaller than the female. It had skin similar to the female's but with wings similar to the large one he dealt with earlier. It wore a pair of black torn-up shorts held up by a belt. But the most noticeable feature of this creature was the color of its hair. Golden yellow spiked hair with red tips being held up by an orange bandana. Something else that Hakon noticed was the size of it. It was small, not but the size of a young boy. But the orange glowing eyes told the man of the ferocity it had

"Did you really think you could attack our home and get away without punishment?"

Goliath landed opposite of the young one, cornering the man from four sides. "I see you have met our watchdog."

The young one growled at the man causing him to take a step closer to the female who hissed at him.

"Along with our youngest member and my second in command." Goliath walked closer to the man and gripped him around the throat. "I grow tired of this. Take what men you have left…." he brought the man mere inches from his face "and be thankful you leave with your lives." He then tossed the man behind him over the ledge.

The gargoyles watched as the man fell from such a great height to fall into a pile of hay, saving his life

The youngest looked back up at Goliath, "did you know that there was a haystack there?'

"He was fortunate that I saw that."

Hakon got out of the hay before he shouted up at them, declaring his return

Goliath crossed his arms as he looked at the young one "you were supposed to remain in the rookery during battles"

The youngling merely stuck his tongue out "and what? Let you have all the fun? Not my style, father."

Goliath groaned as he shook his head "how many times must I tell you that you must look to all the clan as you caretakers. The entire clan is our family."

The young one merely folded in his wings as he crossed his arms and gave a cheeky smile "you can say it as many times as you want father. Doesn't change anything with me."

The female smiled as she brought up a hand and ruffled his hair "Goliath, he means no harm in it. And being the only one to hatch from his batch, it does not surprise me that he finds attachment to us."

"Mother, you're messing up my hair!"

"With how it usually is, does it make a difference, Maelstrom?" the female said as she chuckled at her youngling's complaint

Maelstrom was what he had named himself after he had heard one of the humans say it in a passing conversation. He did not know why but he felt that the name was sort of ….attached to him but not the name that was meant for him.

Once the female stopped fussing over Maelstrom, she noticed the wound that Goliath had on his hand and began to tend to it.

It was then that the other gargoyles joined them with the elder smiling at Maelstrom "seems the lad still defies ya, Goliath."

Goliath could only sigh as Maelstrom was an odd one. Even during his hatching, there was something about him that seemed different from other hatchlings. It was something none of the others could figure out but he had this air about him that made him friendly to others. However, it was a miracle that he was even hatched since, for some unforeseen force, the other eggs of his batch had perished before they could hatch. It was clear that they were the ones to create him but they were confused about his hair color but they cared for him all the same. It was thanks to the elder informing the hatchling that his parents were Goliath and his mate that Maelstrom began to call them mother and father. Something he had tried to rectify with little success.

Maelstrom jumped up and sat on the elder's shoulder as he smiled "I was never really given an order to hide so I just did what I thought I could do to help"

Goliath sighed once again at how Maelstrom would always use some sort of way to disobey him. Normally he would discipline ones that did such a thing but he could not bring himself to do it.

The captain of the guard walked up to Goliath and smiled "we owe you our lives, Goliath."

Maelstrom grew indignant as he jumped off the elder's shoulder "and what are we? Ornaments that look cool?"

The captain smiled as he patted the young gargoyle on the head "ney. You be a force to be reckoned with lad."

Maelstrom laughed at this "That's better."

The whole Wyvern clan stood at a higher level of the celebrating human soldiers as they smiled at the retreating invaders

~Later~

Maelstrom, Goliath, and his mate were making their way towards the human dining hall.

The female huffed as they made their way "must we make an appearance to these humans?"

Goliath smiled at his mate's usual attitude towards humans. He knew that she did not have a high opinion of the humans but he knew that she was more annoyed that the cliffs that they once reigned over were now co-owned with them. "It is merely a way for the captain to get us some recognition." he then looked to his youngling "and I expect you to behave in the presence of the humans."

Maelstrom smiled up at his father as he nodded "yes, father" he turned forward as they grew closer to the door. Something that did nug him as what he heard just before they opened the door. Unlike other gargoyles, he had hearing that was far more acute so he could hear some of the words that were being said

"...without goliath and his gargoyles, our defense would have proven useless."

Maelstrom smiled at how the captain would give them credit when they deserved it. But his smile dropped at what he heard the princess say

"Please, don't mention that monster's name in my presence."

Maelstrom didn't like what was said but he was more annoyed than angry. 'Better not tell mother what she said.'

Goliath then pushed open the great doors in order to enter the dining hall, causing all the humans inside to stop their festivities and began to whisper in shock at their appearance

The captain spoke up to the princess who was also shocked at their arrival "your pardon, your highness. I took the liberty of asking them to appear and be recognized for their bravery."

The princess stood from her seat and looked down at the man "Captain, we are most seriously displeased. To allow beasts in the dining hall."

The magus stood as well "you speak wisely princess. These are unnatural creatures. No good can come from associating with their kind."

Maelstrom was seriously getting annoyed by all the demeaning talk about his kind but with what the magus said, he could not help but jab back. "This coming from the one that uses magic spells and sorcery. You call us unnatural yet we are as natural as the human princess you serve. The only difference is that we live differently."

The humans were stunned to hear this, not only because it was inherently a slight to the humans but that the smaller one could speak. None of the humans had ever spared the time to ever consider them capable of speech.

Goliath folded his arms as he sternly spoke "Maelstrom."

Said youngling huffed as he folded in his wings as his tail swung around with slight irritation. "Alright, father"

The three gargoyles walked forward until they stood in front of the princess who sat back down with fear in her eyes. Goliath spread his wings before folding them into a bow

This had startled the princess as she had assumed that the beast would do something savage

The captain chuckled jovially as he walked up to Goliath. "It seems we named you well Goliath. You are as good a soldier as the philistine giant who fought David."

The princess could not hold her prejudice back as she spoke "you would do well to remember captain, that the biblical Goliath was also a bully and a savage."

The female gargoyle growled as she lit her eyes red in a threatening manner

Maelstrom moved to stand in front of his mother and brought his talons up in a placating manner "easy mother. She is merely speaking hot air. She doesn't know father well enough so she speaks out of fear."

The magus grew angered by this "how dare you beast!"

Maelstrom turned and flared his eyes at the mage "can you tell me that you aren't speaking out of fear? All you and the princess have done since we were brought up was speak as if we are animals that are meant to be put on a leash or killed. Yet all we have done was show up and were going to politely join you. Who has been more disrespectful here? We beasts or you humans?"

Goliath placed a talon on Maelstrom's shoulder to calm him down. "If you would excuse us, Princess." he led the other two out of the hall not seeing the anger looked of the Mage

The captain met up with the gargoyles as the female was arguing with Goliath

"They dare mock! We save their lives and they repay us with contempt"

"She is right Goliath. Your kind deserve better."

Goliath smiled at them before he spoke "it is merely how they are. They fear what they do not understand."

His mate shook her head "your amount of patience with the humans astounds me."

Maelstrom smiled as he spoke up next "the humans aren't all bad. I mean…" he reached behind him into a pouch he had in his pants before pulling out several scrolls of parchment. "Look at these. A human girl drew these and gave them to me." he opened up several of them to show that they were drawings of the gargoyles as they slept.

The female looked through them and although she disliked humans, she could not deny that they were well done. She stopped at one of Maelstrom and one of Goliath. She could not help but smile at them. "I will admit, the human has a talent for this. I will keep these for myself." she said as she handed back the rest

Maelstrom took the other images but tried reaching for the one that had him on it "no wait, you can't have that one! Gimme!"

The female actually ran away from her youngling as he gave chase, trying to get the image of him back.

Maelstrom walked into a room deep in the bowels of the castle as he grumbled to himself. "Why did I show my mother that one. Now she will never give it up." he walked to a table on the far wall and paced the drawings on it before lighting a candle.

"Boo!"

"Ahh!" Maelstrom flared his wings and jumped at the sudden sound before he tried to calm down. He turned around to see a girl slightly older than him giggling at his reaction. "Merideth!"

The girl Merideth was but a servant girl to the royals of the castle. She had short auburn hair that reached her shoulders with some freckles on her face. She wore a simple forest green servant uniform with a white apron on top. She was one of the very few that had spent time with the gargoyles and had befriended Maelstrom. She was also the one that drew the images of the gargoyles as a way to pass the time when not on duties

Merideth finally got her giggling under control before she smiled at her gargoyle friend "so your mother kept the one of you?"

He nodded as he sighed and went to sit in a chair "yeah. And I doubt I will get it back. What are you doing down here anyway?"

"I had the time to spend for myself. This is the best place to find some peace."

Maelstrom shook his head as he thought about the room.

This room was in all actuality something that he made himself. It was once a storage room that was not that large. However, it was left alone due to another storage room being made closer to the upper levels. One wall had not yet been covered in stone and was merely dirt. When he found it he chose to start digging and make the room bigger. Thankfully the stability of the castle and some solid rock that he ran into, it was a solid room that he had claimed as his own. No one knew about it since he told no one but Merideth. He used it as a way to hide if he ever needed to and the passageway to it was old and full of cobwebs that many thought it to be an extra dungeon.

Meredith was the only one he told as they became friends and now the two of them used it for peace and to put some of the drawings that she made of the gargoyles

The girl moved to look at the collection the two had before she spoke "should you not head up to the tower? It is nearly sunrise."

Maelstrom shrugged as he moved to a corner. "I'll be fine here for the day. But you should head back up. If sunrise is almost here then you should be ready to begin your duties."

She sighed as she knew he was right. "Must you bring up such things? It bores me to no end."

Maelstrom laughed "one of these nights, you are going to have to show me what it is you do during the day."

Meredith smiled sadly "if only you could see the day yourself."

Maelstrom nodded somberly "wouldn't that be something to see." he then felt that sunrise had arrived and posed in a beastial way before he became stone.

Meredith made her way back to ground level to begin her duties attending to the princess

~following night~

Goliath unwrapped the cloth that covered his wound only to see that it was completely healed. He listened to the captain and his mate telling him he should take the whole clan to take care of the Viking that had attacked the previous night "it's too risky. I cannot leave the castle unprotected. I shall go alone." he then smiled as he thought of the idea of scaring the Vikings away

His mate did not like the idea of him going as she moved forward "it is too dangerous. Let me go with you."

"No. You must stay here and protect our home. I won't go alone. You are my strongest warrior. I leave you in command while I am away."

She wanted to refuse him but he stood strong in his decision. She watched as he went off to go get whoever he was going with. Once she knew he was out of earshot, she looked to Maelstrom who sat quietly until now "when your father leaves, I want you to go with him in secret."

This caught Maelstrom by surprise "why mother? I'm sure father can handle a few humans like them."

The captain turned and spoke to the youngling next "it is merely a precaution. Best to have a surprise waiting in case they get the jump on him."

Maelstrom shrugged as he decided to go as he had nothing better to do. He moved to the side of the tower before spreading his wings and flew to the lower level closer to the main gate so that when he saw his father leave he could follow. Sure, he knew he would get in trouble if he was caught but it wasn't anything new.

He waited by the gate until he saw his father and the elder leave. He waited for only a moment before he flew off after them.

Goliath and the elder stopped when they found hoof tracks in the dirt leading away from the castle,

The elder examined the tracks and could not help but feel that something was off about them "these tracks are far too light for horses carrying men in armor."

Goliath considered what the elder said as he looked around to see any sign of the Vikings. However, instead of a sign of Vikings, he caught a small glimpse of someone hiding behind a tree and he knew that color of skin. He folded his arms as he sternly commanded "Maelstrom! Come out here!" he waited for a few seconds before his youngling timidly came out from behind the tree

"Hey, Father."

"What are you doing out here? You should have stayed at the castle."

Maelstrom rubbed his talon over his arm as he looked anywhere but at his father "I came here to help."

"I do not need any help with this."

The elder took a step forward "aye, lad. This not be the place for you."

"But I can help!"

Goliath spread his wings as he sternly spoke "NO! You shall return to the castle and you are to remain there until our return!"

Maelstrom looked into his father's eyes as he defiantly spoke "you don't need to treat me like a kid Father. I am able to handle myself!"

"Clearly you cannot! You followed us here when you are not meant to be in battle! You shall return to the castle at once!" Goliaths eyes flared up

Maelstrom met his fathers flaring eyes with his own as they growled at each other. After a few seconds, Maelstrom growled out a "fine." he turned and began making his way back towards the castle

The elder looked to Goliath "the lad merely wanted to help. Did ya need to be so harsh on him?"

Goliath took a deep breath before calming down "it is for his own protection. He is not old enough to be in battle and….I worry that he might be feld in battle."

This got a chuckle out of the elder "through all your boasting about how he should look to the whole clan for guidance, you yourself cannot deny that you have grown attached to him."

Goliath sighed as he looked back to the tracks "let us go. We must find them before sunrise."

Maelstrom flew fast back to the castle and chose that he didn't want to deal with anyone with how mad he was. He knew that he would be in trouble but to say that he wasn't ready for battle really hit and he just wanted to be alone. Sneaking past the gargoyles and humans that walked around, he made it to his secret room and just decided that he would stay there for the night since he as in no mood to deal with anything

Back at the castle, the female gargoyle sighed as she was frustrated by how Goliath punished the others when it was clearly the human's fault. She hated the idea of the clan still being here during the attack but the captain had said that he would protect them during the day. This did not console her since she did not trust him. The one thing that gave her comfort was the fact that her youngling and mate were not here and would be safe from the attack. She thought about what she could do and felt the need to help the others. She flew to a couple of other gargoyles that were at the moment going to their perch to rest for the day. "Listen. You must….." she stopped as she saw the invading Vikings just at the borderline of the forest. "Ugh never mind. It was nothing." she began to walk away, leaving the other two confused at what that might have been about. She made her way to the other side of the castle and looked over the drop of the cliffside. She spread her wings to jump but before she did, she looked up to the top of the tower where Goliath and Maelstroms perch were. She felt her relief to see them empty as it meant that at least they were away from the castle. She Leapt off and glided to a ledge close to the water.

Unseen by her another gargoyle took up Maelstroms perch as he had usually taken up his spot when the youngling chose not to take it. "Never knew why he never liked his spot. It has a nice view." he posed, ready to sleep

The female gargoyle knelt down and looked to the sun. 'stay safe.' was her final thought as she turned to stone and let out a single tear

The attack on the castle was so sudden that the soldiers could barely up with a proper counter to it

Merideth was running through the courtyard trying to avoid the invaders as the soldiers of the castle fought bravely to protect their home. But she saw them fall to the sword meaning that this was a losing battle. She was suddenly grabbed by the wrist and yanked back

"Well looky here! A pretty face running around a battlefield." a man with brown hair grabbed her face and turned her head "oh yes. We will have some fun later on." he licked her cheek as he imagined what he would do to her once he had her in his tent.

"Unhand me beast!"

The man chuckled "oh a feisty one too. Found me a nice one." he ran his hand over her ass and developed chest

Merideth felt disgusted at the older man's touch as she struggled to get out of his grasp. As she did this, she opened her eyes to the sight of the leader of the Vikings lifting his mace and bringing it down on one of the sleeping gargoyles. She froze in shock at the sight but what got her the most was that the perch that she knew Maelstrom would sometimes take had a pile of rubble on it."

The man noticed her stop and looked at what she was staring at and smirked "good riddance. Nothing but foul creatures that don't deserve to exist." he laughed as he watched Hakon smash another gargoyle

Something in Merideth snapped as she felt anger at the foul man that had her. She noticed that due to his laughter he had loosened his grip on her. She did not even think about what she was doing. She yanked her hands free, turned around, grabbed the sword that was at his waist, pulled it back, and made one swing at him. She did not wait to see if she hit him, she just ran.

What she didn't see was that the man grabbed his throat as blood spilled through his fingers. He fell to the ground trying desperately to stay alive but he closed his eyes as he took his last breath.

Meredith made her way through the halls of the castle and towards the entrance that led to Maelstrom's room. "Please let him be there. Let him not be the one that rested there today! Please." she bursted through the door but paused as it was far too dark to see anything. She made her way towards where she knew the table should be as the castle rumbled. She bumped into the table and brushed her hand at the top and found a flint that they used to light up some hay they had under it so they could light the candle. Going through the process, she lit the candle and brought it up, and looked around the room. Once she turned she was startled by the sight of Maelstrom, frozen in stone in his usual terrifying pose. But terror was the last thing she felt. She smiled at the sight of her friend still here. "Oh, thank heavens."

*rumbled. crumble*

Meredith didn't have time to be relaxed as she felt the castle begin to crumble as unbeknownst to her, the Vikings were using catapults to knock down some walls. One of which took down the wall just above the room and caused the ceiling to begin to collapse. She screamed in fear as the hall that led to the room began to collapse and the room was soon to follow. She moved closer to Maelstrom as he stood on the far side of the room and closed her eyes, hoping that in some miracle, they would live through this

End of chapter

I was going to make this chapter longer but with how I plan on doing the next part, it would be pointless really.

I had skipped several parts that were in the show because they would play out almost exactly like the original.

Meredith is an OC I came up with on the spot. She most likely will not have anything to do with the story but who knows cause even I don't know. Originally it was going to be Tom, the refugee boy that made friends with Naruto but it changed into this girl

To make sure that it is clear to readers. Naruto does not remember his past life. In the first chapter the chant tells about what happened but in case you didn't get it, This is the verse I meant "Your self and strength shall for now sleep". That should tell you all you need to know for now

One thing about his description, I didn't add his whiskers because he doesn't have them. Just imagine a gargoyle that looks like Naruto. I will create an illustration for it later on but for now, please use your imagination. Also, I wanted to have him resemble Demona a bit more than Goliath since Angela resembles Goliath more than Demona

One of you reviewers guessed right. He is the son of Goliath and Demona.

Speaking of which I did not call her Demona because as of now, she does not have that name.

Flames will be ignored.
