Chapter 2: one more time
*crack crack*
Naruto burst from his stone sleep as he roared and stretched his arms in the air "ah, a good day's sleep always makes me feel better." the smile that he had when he woke up slowly dropped into confusion when he opened his eyes only to not be able to see anything. And it wasn't the normal form of darkness since usually there could still be some light from torches that were in the hall. "Wonder if they were put out?" it was then that he realized that the air was thin which confused him more
"...Mael…..strom….."
Maelstrom turned his head to where he heard the almost too quiet voice "who's there?" he walked towards the voice only to stop when his feet kicked something soft. He looked down but still could not see anything so he knelt down and began to feel it to find out what it is.
"...that tickles….*gasp*"
He now knew who it was that called him and he began to panic with how weak she sounded "Merideth! What's wrong?" he ran his talk over her until he got a feel of the position her body was in before he picked her up and cradled her in his arms. "Come on what's wrong?"
Merideth could not see her friend but she could tell from the panic in his voice that he was worried. "*wheeze*...room…..collapse…..no...air."
Maelstrom thought about what she said and looked around but like before, he could not see anything. He gently put her down, got up, and brought his arms up to feel his way. Only three forward and he felt the rocks and dirt of the collapsed room. "Oh no." Now he knew why the air was so thin. It was running out. The reason he was still fine was because he had just woken up but he had no idea how long Merideth was in this situation. 'I have to get her out of here!' He was about to begin to claw his way through the blockade until he felt Merideth grab onto the tip of his tail.
"Maelstrom….are we …...to die here?"
Maelstrom could hear the weakening voice of his friend and he grew angered at the fact that she was in such a state.
Meredith saw the glowing orange eyes of her friend but her mind was starting to become muddled from the lack of air so she wasn't sure if she was actually seeing it or her mind was coming up with a hallucination.
"I will not let you die here!"
Merideth heard clawing against stone and dirt but she could no longer stay awake and fell unconscious, while still holding onto his tail.
Goliath and the clan elder flew towards the castle as fast as they could. They had realized that they were tricked into leaving it unprotected. Goliath had a sinking feeling about it but he still hoped that the battle was still going so he and his clan could drive the Vikings away. Unfortunately, the sight he saw filled him with dread "no."
Castle Wyvern was in flames. Walls fallen, soldiers lay across the grounds bloody and lifeless. But the most horrifying was the lack of gargoyles.
The two landed in the courtyard looking around for any clues on what had happened.
The elder looked over the soldiers and noticed something odd about the bow he had in his grasp. He picked it up and noticed the string had snapped. But the snap was too clean for it to have happened naturally. "Sabotage."
Goliath looked kept looking until he stopped in front of a pile of rubble. Noticing something odd about one of the rocks, he picked it up and flipped it over, only to gasp in horror at what it was. It was the eye of one of his clan. "No!" he looked around again and noticed there were more piles of rubble just like the one in front of him and he could see the signs of his kind. A talon, a wing, a horn. "NO!" It was then that he remembered. He looked up to the top of the where his mate and hatchling would be. Rushing to the tower and climbing up the side, he pulled himself up. He moved to where his mate would have slept and much like below, nothing but rubble. His grief had taken him as he gently grabbed some of the rubble and whispered in despair "my...angel of the night…." then in hopes of not seeing rubble where his hatchling slept he looked to where Maelstrom slept but his hopes were quickly dashed. He took a step to it with one talon outstretched but he feared seeing the dead eye of his hatchling. "Maelstrom…." he felt guilty as he had been the one to send Maelstrom back to the castle. 'If I had allowed him to stay. If I had not sent him back…..' He clenched his talons so hard that they began to bleed. He spread his wings as he thrusted his arms in the air as he let out a roar of anger and sorrow "rrrrrraaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Unseen by goliath, his mate was on the lower level of the castle and heard the roar. She was just as distraught at the sight of her brothers and sisters destroyed when they slept. When she heard the roar she felt some elation at the fact that her mate was still alive. "Their back! But I….." She took a few steps back to remain hidden from sight. "I can't let them see me, not yet." She jumped off the side of the castle walls and flew low so she was hidden by the cliffs. "Maelstrom and Goliath will be so happy to see me still alive." she kept flying away from the castle and thinking of what she could tell them when she returned
"rrrrrraaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
Maelstrom stopped his digging as he heard the muffled roar "father?" He was happy to hear that his father had returned but he could not understand why he was roaring in such a manner. "I better keep digging." He had been digging as best he could to get out of the room not just for him but for his friend. "Don't worry Merideth, we'll be out soon." despite how confident he said it, he was actually panicking. He wasn't sure if he was digging in the right direction, he didn't know how much progress he made, and he hadn't heard anything from Merideth since he started. "We are not dying here!" he said this not only to reassure her but himself as well because he was also getting tired from not only exertion but from lack of air.
Once Goliath stopped his roar he looked down to see the group he had sent into the rookery. He flew down and landed in front of them. "you're alive! Were there others? In the rookery, were there others?!"
The group looked at each other before the smallest one spoke "we were the only ones down there."
Goliath now knew that this small group was the last of his clan.
The elder came up to them as he spoke "none of the refugees are here. Not the princess, taken prisoner most likely."
Goliath nodded "we will find them…." his eyes flared as he growled out the rest of what he was saying "we will save the humans, and then…..we will have our revenge!" he led the last of his clan to the wall and flew away from the castle, to track down the Vikings and finish them off.
Melstrom was slowing down. He felt the last of his energy draining from his body as he clawed another rock out of the way. "Can't….stop… *wheeze* now." He fell to his knees as he kept digging. He felt that his talons were bleeding from our use but he didn't care. After a few more digging he could no longer lift his arms. "No…" gathering every last bit of strength he clawed one last time and fell to the ground. To his fortune it caused the dirt to fall forward and bring in some light that bled from the higher levels. He took a deep breath and felt the fresh air enter his lungs. "We made it." he turned his head and the light had shown Merideth lying on the ground not but a few feet away from him. Due to his lack of energy, he dragged himself towards her before he shook her and wheezed out "Merideth… wake up….we made it through….." he kept shaking her only to receive no reply or sound coming from her. "Merideth?" he dragged himself closer and shook her harder "Merideth, come on, wake up." despite his attempts she would not stir. He pressed his left talon onto her chest and felt that she had stopped breathing. "no…..I was too slow." He shut his eyes and clenched at her blouse. Tears fell from his eyes as he whispered out "I'm sorry, Merideth." the last of his energy left him as he fell unconscious
~viking camp~
The captain knelt in front of the tied-up princess with a smirk on his face "I'm sure the king will pay a hefty price to see you returned to him." he then looked to Magus with a scoff "we don't need you though." He was about to pull out his sword to finish off the mage but the princess spoke up, stopping him.
"You traitor! I'll see ya both hang for this!"
The captain grabbed her by the ropes around her and brought her forward "I'd watch my tongue, Princess. We can return ya but we may not do it with you in one piece." He wanted to really punish these two as they were main antagonists to the gargoyles. These two belittled them and constantly called them beasts and animals when it was because of the gargoyles that they were even alive. He hated himself for what he had inadvertently caused but he was already in too deep to back off now.
Magus spoke up in anger at this "you heathens! If I had my book of spells I would…"
"Hahahaha do you happen to mean this book?" Hakon picked up a thick book and opened it to show intricate drawings and wording that very few could read. "Magic spells me glad I can't read." he ripped out a couple of pages before holding them over the fire, burning them to ash
The Princess grew angered at his uncaring attitude "you two are nothing but a blight on this earth."
Hakon slammed the book shut before tossing it aside and got up from his sitting position and pulled out his sword as he made his way to her. "You are testing my patience, Princess. Don't think that you are safe. We can still kill you and send your head to the king."
"Rrrraaaaggggh"
The four in the cave heard the roar coming from outside with Hakon and the captain running outside to see what was going on. Immediately they saw that the other Vikings were panicking and pointing to the air. They looked to see some of the gargoyles flying their way
Hakon began to panic at this as he looked at the captain "you said they wouldn't follow us!"
"If you hadn't destroyed the others!"
Hakon ran back into the cave and grabbed the princess "looks like your precious gargoyles have come for you."
The princess was shocked to hear this as a bit of hope was rekindled "The Gargoyles?" she looked to Hakon with new determination "you're a dead man Hakon."
Said man picked her up by the ropes "maybe but not before you!" he pulled out a knife ready to slit her throat but he lost his grip on her when she shoved herself into him, knocking him over
Magus watched as the princess ran out of the cave "Princess! Help! Somebody help! They're going to kill her!" he saw Hakon and the captain chase after her as he shimmied around and found a small stalagmite which he used to cut the ropes that bound his hands
The gargoyles flew down and began to attack the Vikings that were starting to flee.
The elder landed in front of a few of the Vikings, pulled out his sword, and slashed at them leaving large gashes on their chest that they would bleed out from.
The red one landed on top of one of the Vikings, crushing him before using his tail to grab another by the neck and swinging the man hard into another. He heard a snap but he was not sure which one it came from.
The heaviest one landed next to a pig on a spit, before picking it up and taking a bite. Seeing a Viking coming his way he clenched his free hand and punched the Viking in the chest, hard enough to leave a deep dent in the armor.
The smallest flew overhead a few of the Vikings before landing on top of one's shoulder who stumbled on his feet swinging his sword wildly. The sword struck a few other Vikings, with one losing his head due to the swing. The gargoyle leaped off and swiped his talon on the man's face.
As all this was going on the refugees were cheering at being rescued with a small boy named tom telling his mother "see, I told you that they would come."
Magus had freed himself from his bindings and walked out of the cave entrance to see the princess nowhere in sight and the gargoyles freeing the refugees. However, his prejudice and grief blinded him "you fools! She'd be alive if only you hadn't come!" hearing the smallest one speak up in confusion "they would have ransomed us both! But you had to invade their camp!" he opened his book to a specific page and looked for the spell he wanted
The elder of the gargoyles took a step forward "What's all this? Where is the princess?"
Magus paused in his search to briefly grieve for the lost princess "dead. And would I able to wield a sword, I'd send you to join her! But this will have to do!" he gestured to the spell he wanted
"Domiatus, doomcastaloons supernubis, askendanst!"
The gargoyles were enveloped by a blue mystic air that swirled around them. None of them knew what was going on but soon found themselves forced into poses
Tom was wide-eyed as he saw the mage cast a curse upon the ones that saved them
Goliath flew towards the fleeing figures and saw that they stopped at the edge of a cliff. He landed hard, eyes flaring, wings spread and growling his anger. He then noticed that one of the figures was the captain, someone he thought he could trust "YOU are the betrayer!?"
The captain brought his arms up in surrender "it was not supposed to be this way."
Goliath was furious at the fact that someone he trusted was the one that caused the destruction of his clan "all of my clan is dead. My mate….my HATCHLING!"
The captain looked down in sorrow as he was fond of the young one
Goliath's eyes flared brighter "...and now you two will join them!" he readied his talons to finish off the two that had caused the tragedy.
The captain took a few steps back as he grew fearful of the furious gargoyle "I told you to take your kind away from the castle. If you had only listened…."
"TRAITOR!"
Hakon held the princess closer as he was terrified of the larger creature. In a desperate attempt to save his own life he pointed his sword towards the captain "he's the one you want! He shattered them!"
The captain was indignant of the accusation "you lying sack of…!" He grabbed the hand extended to him and tried to pry the sword out of Hakon's grasp. Unfortunately, during the scuffle the two lost their footing and fell off the cliffside, taking the princess with them and they screamed as they fell
Goliath, seeing what was about to happen, moved quickly to the edge and grasped the ropes that were around the princess. Getting a solid grip of the princess he brought her back up to the solid ground. He used his talons to slice up the ropes, freeing her from captivity. Once she was free the gargoyle moved to the edge and looked down only to see darkness. He could no longer finish what he wanted "I've been denied everything! EVEN MY REVENGE~!" how could he be denied the chance to avenge his mate, his clan, his hatchling. It wasn't fair
The princess walked up to the distraught gargoyle. All this time she had considered him to be nothing but a monster that held no love for anything. A beast just there to quench a bloodlust she was sure it had. But now she sees upfront a leader, a significant other lost from treachery, a father mourning the loss of his child. "goliath …..I…"
Before she could finish her attempts at condolences they were interrupted by the shouts of a boy
Tom was running towards them in a panic "Goliath! You have to help your friends!"
The two adults looked to the t boy in confusion but they followed him back to the camp
Goliath was stunned to see the last of his clan were all stone. "Stone….at night? What Sorcery is this!?"
Magus walked upon the gargoyles side with his book of spells ready to use it once more "Sorcery indeed! And you shall join them!" he was about to cast the same spell he used on the other gargoyles until he saw the princess walk out from behind Goliath. He gasped in shock "Princess…"
The princess looked upon the frozen forms of the gargoyles "oh Magus...what have you done?"
Magus dropped his book as he fell to his hands and knees "I….I thought you were dead, your highness. I was mad with grief."
Goliath walked up to the mage and gripped him by the back of his robes "reverse the spell! Change them back!"
Magus shook his head in slight panic "I cannot! The page with the counterspell was burned." he looked down at his book as he remembered Hakon had burned several pages in his book, one of them being the one that held the counterspell.
Goliath dropped the mage as he walked up to the last of his clan. "now…..I am truly alone."
The princess looked to Magus as she asked "you turned them to stone forever?"
Magus took a deep breath as he answered her. "The terms of the spell would be that they would sleep…...until the castle rises above the clouds."
~later~
Goliath had carried the stone figures of his clan back to the castle. It was a strenuous task but he would not leave them there. He had gathered the remains of his fallen clan and set them into individual piles in the castle courtyard as a sort of gravesite. Once it was cleared he set them in their proper place.
The princess spoke as Goliath finished placing the elder "we've done you a great wrong Goliath. I wish there were a way to repay you."
Magus swallowed his pride as he knew that what he had done was wrong and that he was being let off easily "no apologies can make up for what happened. I just wish there was something I could do."
"What will you do now?"
The princess took a step closer to him "I'll take my people to my uncle. It is no longer safe here."
Goliath folded in his wings "I have a request."
"You have but to name it."
"The eggs in the rookery will soon hatch. They will need guidance."
The princess smiled as she nodded "do not worry. We will look after them as if they were our very own."
Goliath nodded in appreciation before looking to Magus "there is something that you can do for me, Magus." he turned and began walking towards the entrance to the stairs "cast your spell one last time."
The princess and Magus were stunned to hear this as they did not expect Goliath to ask such a thing
Goliath would not let his clan suffer this curse alone. If they were to sleep forever, then so will he. He paused as he walked next to a specific spot. Maelstroms perch. It was cleared of the remains by the princess and Magus as he had not the heart to do such a thing the hatchling he had failed. He ran his talon on it as he remembered the anger he saw in the young one's eyes. And he wished for anything that he could take it all back. He lost everything this night. He had no fear of sleeping for however long it might be. He made his way to the top of the tower and posed in a kneeling position, looking down at his frozen clan. He paid no attention to the mage behind him casting the spell as his eyes lingered on two empty spots. The void spots of his mate and his hatchling.
