Chapter 1: before it begins
"Carl! What are you doing!?" was the panicked cry of a llama that was running for his life. He came home after going out for some groceries only to suddenly be attacked by his roommate. He had run upstairs to avoid his crazed friend and barricaded the door to his room with a dresser but the banging and growls that came from the door were causing him to become frantic. He quickly grabbed his phone and attempted to dial 911 but his shaking fingers were making him hit the wrong buttons.
*CRASH*
He jumped and dropped his phone at the sound of the door breaking open. He looked over to see that his roommate had broken through. He realized that he had dropped his phone and it clattered closer to Carl. His eyes went from the phone to Carl and he made his decision. He needed the phone and made a grab for it. He was lucky to pick it up but Carl had made it through the door and was now in the room with him. He turned around while still trying to dial the number and he chose to jump out of the window. He was pumped full of adrenaline and fear as he grabbed the latch of the window and threw it open….or he would have if it wasn't locked. He fumbled with the lock until he felt a strong grip on his head and then searing pain in his neck "AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaa….."
*CRUNCH*
His phone dropped to the ground again as a splatter of blood landed on the screen showing "ZPD", waiting for a swipe to make the call.
*crunch crunch*
"What do you call a three-humped camel?"
"Nick, you've told that joke already and I know the answer at this point" came the giggled response of Judy Hopps who was driving the cruiser
Nicolas Piberius Wilde and Judith Laverne Hopps, though they prefer to be called Nick and Judy. The two heroes of Zootopia that saved the city over a year ago from the former Mayor: Dawn Bellwether, and her plan to turn Prey animals against Predators. At the moment, they were enjoying another typical Friday on patrol in Savannah central.
Nick smirked as he leaned back in his chair "come on, Carrots. You can't beat the classics. Besides, it's been a while since I used that one."
Judy could not help but smile as she shook her head "only you would call that a classic…..and you used it yesterday."
Nick gasped dramatically as he placed a paw on his chest "has it been that long!?" he then threw his head back as he pressed the back of his other paw on his forehead "Oh I must use it more often so it remains forever in our hearts."
Judy did her best to keep her giggles from escaping "please don't."
{you've got a hustle…...you've got a hustle…..}
Judy could not help but give Nick a funny look as she heard his ringtone. "Couldn't you have found another ringtone to use? I mean, how much narcissism can you have to hear your own voice say that?"
Nick smiled at Judy as he pulled out his phone "hey! I'll have you know that my voice should be used for all ringtones." he finally got it out of his pocket and looked at who it was that was calling. Once he saw the name he smiled wide before answering "Olivia! We were just talking about you."
{...}
"Ok ok, you caught me. So, to what do I owe the pleasure of your call?"
{...}
Nick fell back to his overdramatic attitude "*gasp* Is that tomorrow? How could I have forgotten such an important date? Oh, my poor soul doesn't deserve forgiveness."
{...}
Nick's mood became slightly serious "alright, I'll stop. But to make sure I have the time right. Tomorrow at 11 AM, right?"
{...}
"Ok, got it. See you then."
{...}
"Same here, bye." he hung up the phone before putting it in his pocket. He looked over to Judy who had a smile on her face "what's with that smile, Carrots?"
Judy smiled as she turned her head to watch the road "not once are you ever going to take anything seriously are you?"
Nick pulled out his aviator glasses and placed them on "the day I take things seriously is when there are no more blueberries."
Judy couldn't help but sigh good-naturedly. "Dumb fox."
Nick smiled as he responded with his usual response to that. "You know you love me."
Judy's smile grew as she heard this. She knew the answer as it hasn't changed since they first became partners on the force and best friends. "Do I know that? Yes, yes I do."
{calling all officers in Savannah Central, we have a 211 at "Damon's in the rough"}
Nick grabbed the radio and answered "this is officer Wilde and Hopps. We are a few minutes away and on our way."
{copy that, Officer Wilde.}
Nick put the radio down and hit the button that turned on the cruiser's lights and siren. As Judy smiled
"Well, there are still blueberries around."
Nick smirked at his partner "on the job is a whole different matter."
Another typical Friday in Savannah central
~Later~
Nick hopped out of the cruiser as Judy dropped him off at a random street he said he would walk home from.
Judy always wondered why Nick never wanted her to see where he lived. She had bugged him constantly about it and even tried inviting herself to it but he always seemed to find a way to get out of it. "One of these days, I'm going to follow you to your elusive home and finally see what kind of place you live in."
Nick smirked at her "why Carrots, I never thought that you would become a stalker for little old me. Should I get a restraining order to protect myself from your stalker ways?"
Judy huffed at his attitude "you know that I didn't mean it like that Slick. It's just that you know where my apartment is but I have no clue about where you live."
Nick hopped back up through the still-open door and quickly booped Judy on the nose "and that will be the smallest mystery you will never solve about me." his smirk grew as he saw her twitchy nose and could not help but think 'cute bunny. Better not say that out loud.' He remembered the last time he called her that. He couldn't stand up straight for hours without feeling immense pain in his bruised ribs. He jumped out of the cruiser, gave a two-fingered salute "see ya tomorrow fluff." and began to walk away
Judy tried to stop her nose from twitching as she lowered her ears to hide how red they were inside from his little action. It was then something registered in her mind. "Hey wait! That is the 'smallest' mystery? What's the biggest?"
Nick turned around and wiggled his finger in a naughty naughty moton "tsk tsk Carrots. That would be telling."
Judy huffed as she reached for the passenger door handle and closed it before getting back in the driver's seat, turned the cruiser on, and drove off home.
Judy opened the door to her apartment and smiled as she made her way in. she looked around and could not help but feel happier at it. When she left Zootopia during the Nighthowler case she gave up her apartment and it was already taken by someone else. Thanks to Nick and his odd connections, she was able to find another one that was a good size…..if she was a wolf. It had its own personal bathroom, was closer to work, cost less, and as a nice bonus…. She couldn't hear her neighbors and they can't hear her. 'I will always be thankful to Nick for helping me get this apartment.' She decided to get clean before she enjoyed the rest of the night. Getting undressed and going into her personal bathroom, made her thankful for another aspect….. Constant warm water. Her previous apartment had a communal bathhouse and would sometimes lose the hot water. Now she didn't have to worry about losing it. She hopped into her bath/shower combo, which meant that the knobs for water were low, she hopped on a bath stool and turned them to start the water before flicking the switch to change the water flow from the nozzle to the showerhead.
Letting the water run over her, she grabbed her fur care and began to lather it over her body. She ran her paw through her fur making sure that she was getting every part of her. Her paw paused as it brushed her left nipple and she thought about her partner and best friend. "...Nick…" she felt heat run through her entire body as she closed her eyes.
Ever since the moment they had on the gondola, she felt a sort of kinship with him as they were both hindered by the stigma the world had placed on their species. He was always seen as an untrustworthy fox that would sooner stab you in the back then stretch out a paw. She was seen as a farm animal that would never equate to anything but a cute bunny. Both wanted to help out other animals and prove that they were more and it broke her heart that he was beaten down when he was a kit and he gave up. She was lucky in that aspect as she was only pushed down and thought a little too ambitious until she was older where she could then prove others wrong. Nick never even got the chance to prove any mammal wrong. After Nick had told her about his childhood trauma, she wanted to be the one that stretched out her paw for him to take. To give him the chance to be more than the world labeled him as. She remembered the smile she had when she gave him the application to join the ZPD academy to become an officer. She remembered that as he took it, she had so many thoughts about the two of them making the world a better place. Then…...the conference happened and she ruined it. She had let a bit of prejudice she didn't know she had out and it tore apart not only the city but her friendship with Nick. she was so close to crying as she saw Nick walk out that door and she wished she never had that fox repellent or even spoke at all. After that, she quit the force and went back to BunnyBurrow. She spent the next couple of months being a farm bunny and she didn't even have the energy to hate it. Before she had never liked being a far girl as it wouldn't help mammals the way she wanted to help. During that time, she thought about what she could have done differently. What could she have said that wouldn't have broken the world when she wanted to make it better? What could she have done differently to not hurt Nick? Something else happened to her during that time as well. Every time she thought about her Fox friend, she felt this fluttering feeling in her stomach. In the beginning, it was so small that it didn't even register in her mind but as time passed, it grew stronger. And when her mind went back to the hurt look he had when she reached back for the repellent, made her heart hurt so much that she would begin to cry. It was during one of these crying moments in the middle of the night that she realized that somehow, at some point, for some reason, she had begun to fall for him. And that thought hurt her heart even more.
After her father had brought up the name of the blue flower and where she remembered she had seen them before, she rushed back to Zootopia to hopefully fix her mistakes. She was fortunate to find out where Nick was thanks to Finnick and she was so excited to see him that she almost forgot how much she hurt him.
Judy thought back to that moment under the bridge
~Flashback~
She had just given her apology and she let her tears fall from her eyes as she hoped that Nick would at least help her. And although she didn't want him to just walk away afterward, she understood that it was her fault that their friendship was in tatters.
{I really am just a dumb bunny}
She heard her own voice playing back the last bit of her apology. She opened her eyes to see Nick lift up an arm with a very familiar carrot pen in his paw before he pressed the button to rewind it
{I really am just a dumb bunny}
Nick turned around with a soft smile on his muzzle "don't worry Carrots, I'll let you erase it….in forty-eight hours."
Judy felt a weight lift off her shoulder as she saw him smile at her with a joke and not an angry glare saying he wanted nothing to do with her. She took a few steps closer as she smiled at this clear sign of forgiveness
"Alright get in here." was what Nick said as he spread out his arms so she could walk into an embrace
She made her way to him and just planted her face into his chest as she cried a bit more. She felt him place his paws on her back and patted her head and could not help but enjoy the contact. She enjoyed being so close to him and able to smell his scent. It was there that she fully accepted that what she felt for the fox was more than just friendship. She laughed a bit as she heard him talk about how she was just doing this to get the carrot pen and she reached out her arm to go along with the joke. 'How can you do this to me, Nick? I've only been with you for over two days and you became so important to me. You may have been a jerk at the start but you defended me when Bogo tried to take my bag, you confided in me when you spoke about your childhood, you helped me when we found those missing animals. You're sarcastic but funny, you're harsh but you care. You're a fox and I'm a bunny yet…..I find you more appealing than any buck I've met.'
"You are standing on my tail though. Off off off off off off."
'Oh, so the very soft ground I was stepping on was actually his tail.'
~Flashback end~
Judy smiled at the memory as she thought more about the fox. His green emerald eyes, his burnt orange fur that flows into his russet paws. The cream color that covers his belly. She remembered a moment when she placed her paw on it and could not help but love the feeling of his fur under her paws. She would at times dream of him standing behind her running his paws from her back to her front, both bare as if they were at the naturalist club with no one else around. To have his paws run down her chest, to her stomach, and lower….
"Ahn~"
Judy's paws clamped over her mouth as her eyes shot wide open in mortification. She had never been more thankful that her neighbors were not mammals with acute hearing and even if they were it would be difficult to hear anything. It was as the digits of her right paw touched her nose, that she noticed that her paw was moist from something other than water. It was then that she finally realized that her imagination went a bit too far and she could feel immense heat in her nether regions. With a sigh she leaned her head on the wall "Sweet cheese and crackers. Blasted heat." she lifted her paw and looked at the bodily fluid before she shook her head and decided that she had spent enough time in the shower. She cleaned herself up and got out of the shower before she got dressed in her sleepwear, which consisted of an oversized shirt and panties. She hopped onto the large bed that was almost covered in bunny plushies, something that she made sure to hide whenever Nick came over to watch movies. She pulled out her laptop and started up a movie that she hadn't finished yet. She laid her head on the pillow before she reached underneath it and pulled out a plushy that she made sure would never ever be found by Nick, no matter what. It was a fox plushie that had green button eyes and a green shirt and tie. She had seen this in a shop before and felt the need to buy it as it was almost a dead ringer to her partner. She always wondered if Nick had seen this plushy before and decided to copy its style. One thing that she added herself was a police badge sticker that officers had to give to kits, cubs, and any other young mammal. She hugged the plush fox as she watched the movie as it went into a romantic scene. "One day I'll tell you…..when I have the courage to do so."
~Saturday morning, Rainforest district, 10:58~
Nick stood in front of a door as he looked at his phone "right on time." he was worried that he wouldn't make it on time since the last time he was late to anything, he got parking duty for a week. Oh that was boring beyond belief, not only that he got an earful from Judy. he looked at his phone again and saw how it went from 10:59 to 11. He pressed the doorbell, waited for a few seconds before the door opened up, and smiled down at the one who answered. He spread his arms up in the air as he spoke "Olivia!"
Olivia smiled up at Nick as she found his antics funny. "Good to see you, Nick."
He hugged the woman before taking a step to the side for Judy to come up as well
Judy gained the biggest smile on her muzzle as she and Olivia hugged tightly "Good to see you again."
"You as well Judy." Olivia then turned around and gently shouted out "Emmitt! Nick and Judy are here."
Emmitt Otterton walked in from the back door breathing a bit heavily and smiled at the two newcomers "Ah, I was wondering when you would arrive."
Emmitt Otterton and Olivia Otterton. The ones that were a key factor in solving the whole Nighthowler case. Since if not for Olivia's desire to find her husband, Judy may never have taken up the case, met Nick, and discovered a conspiracy that was set to tear Zootopia apart. After the case, Olivia and Judy had kept in contact and with Nick becoming her partner they had all gotten to know each other.
Well, Emmitt had already been acquainted with Nick since he had spoken with the mammal several times when he had business in Savannah Central and went for one of his pawpsicles.
Olivia smiled at her husband's state as she knew that he was outside playing soccer with their youngest, Stephan. "Emmitt, we both knew that they were going to be here at 11. I even told you after I called Nick yesterday."
Emmitt nodded as he finally caught his breath. "Right. It must have slipped my mind." he walked over to them and shook their hands "welcome back to our humble abode."
The Otterton household was a simple single floor house, with 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a nice size backyard for mammals their size. The ceilings were even tall enough for Nick, who was the tallest, to walk comfortably though he did have to crouch a bit for some of the doorways, he wasn't that drastically bigger compared to the Otters.
Nick smirked as he saw that Emmitt was still slightly winded "glad you can have us, though I see you still can't keep up with Stephan. He still running circles around you?"
Emmitt chuckled at this "pup has the energy to outrun me for hours. I just don't have the stamina for any prolonged physical activity."
The group chuckled as they made their way into the living room. As they sat down on the couch in a circle, the Otterton pups came in.
The youngest, Stephan, was wearing an orange soccer player's uniform and had a soccer ball in his arms
The eldest son, Kyle, was wearing a blue knit sweater with beige shorts and a book under his arm.
Both pups smiled as they saw the two taller mammals "Nick! Judy!" and ran up to them as they hugged Judy.
Judy hugged them tightly "good to see you guys again."
Nick huffed as he turned his muzzle away "oh sure, she gets a hug and I get left cold here."
Both pups got off of Judy and piled on Nick who lost his footing and fell to the ground with the pups on top of him.
"Ah! Officer down, Officer down!"
Olivia giggled at this as the family had gotten used to Nick's antics "alright pups. Get off the officer so he can keep being the officer we know."
The two pups got up from Nick but they didn't get far as Nick had grasped them around the waist and brought them into a hug. "Revenge!" he then began to tickle the pups in his grasp
The room was filled with laughter not only from the pups but from the adults as well.
Judy was outside with Stephan and Kyle as they kicked Stephan's soccer ball around. Thankfully it wasn't raining at the moment so the only thing that was getting wet were their feet and the pups didn't mind with Judy used to it since she had gotten used to the rainforest district
Nick, Emmit, and Olivia were inside watching the three from a window.
"She is good with pups."
Nick turned his head to look at Olivia. He smiled at what she said as he nodded before grabbing his drink from the table they sat at "she has this thing about young ones where she wants them to strive for whatever dream they have." he took a sip of the tea "with how hard she had to work from a kitten to now, it's no wonder she is good with them."
Emmit smiled as he nodded "she has that nothing is impossible if you work hard enough for it."
Olivia agreed with the notion. "Not just her but you as well, Nick."
Nick quirked a brow at this
"You have gone past the stigma foxes have and become an officer of Zootopia."
Nick smiled as he leaned back in his chair. "Honestly if it wasn't for Carrots, I wouldn't have gotten the job. With how the city saw me, there was no way I would have become anything other than what I was. A con-fox that did the odd job here and there."
Emmit adjusted his glasses "it is best that you leave that life behind, though I am going to miss those pawpsicles you use to sell, we are glad you have become a respectable member of society."
Olivia nodded as she got up and went over to the fridge to grab the pitcher of tea and as she walked past nick she placed her webbed paw on his arm "both of us are happy that you got into a better life and I am thankful for your contribution on the missing mammals cases as well as the Nighthowler incident."
Emmit smiled "we both are. In fact, we have discussed it and we want you to be the godfather of our children as well as our upcoming one."
Nick was stunned by not just being named the godfather of the two young pups but that they were expecting another. "Wait, hold on! Why me? And since when were you expecting."
Olivia sat back in her seat with her tea. "Well, why not you? And we found out only a week ago. It is why we wanted you over as soon as possible."
Honestly, Nick never thought himself to be worthy of the right to care for any youngling. Sure he loved kits but could he actually take care of them. He shook his head as he was overthinking things since this only meant that he would take care of them if anything happened to Emmit and Olivia and it would not do to jinx it. "Alight. I would be honored to be their godfather." it was then that a question came to mind "and who would be the godmother? If you don't mind me asking."
The two eldest otters looked at the window with a smile to see Judy keeping the ball in the air by kicking it.
Nick chuckled at this "that figures. But you two will have to keep the job. I'm sure you would do a better job than me." he then snapped his fingers as he smirked "did you tell Judy yet?" seeing them shake their heads, his smirk grew even wider "then let me be the one to tell her. Her reaction will make my day."
The three laughed as they could imagine how she would react to the news.
Judy and Nick were waving goodbye to the Otterton household.
"Do you have to go?" was the downtrodden question of Stephan
Olivia patted his head "they have a home to go to. Don't worry though, they will come back and play with you pups sometime soon."
Nick did a gun motion as he winked at the kids "sure. next time we have free time, we'll come by again." he turned back to the cruiser parked on the curb and saw Judy jump into the driver's seat "you know, one of these days, you're going to have to let me drive."
Judy rolled her eyes at this. "With the way you drive, no way. Last time I let you drive, we almost got a speeding ticket."
Nick hopped into the passenger seat "hey I was only going five over the speed limit and the only reason we almost got a speeding ticket was because you were adamant that I go the actual speed limit. And you were with me."
Judy waited for Nick to put on his seatbelt before turning on the car "that doesn't change the fact that you were speeding."
"You just wanted to give me a ticket because I was making fun of you giving yourself a ticket when you first started out." Nick stuck his head out of the window and waved at the family "see you guys next time!"
"Take care, Nick, Judy!" was Olivia's goodbye
"Bye you two!" was Emmit's response
"Come back soon." was Kyle's farewell
"Next time you gotta play with us Nick.!" was Stephan's
The family watched as the cruiser drove away as they began to make their way back inside
None of them noticing a bloodied mammal walking on the other side of the street
~tunnel separating Rainforest district and Savannah Central~
Nick smiled as they made their way home but inside he was trying to think of the best way to bring up the news that the Ottertons gave him. 'Hey Carrots, we both became godparents of the pups, oh and the Missus is gaining a new one. No, too straightforward… hmm, what do you call two mammals that became parents that aren't really the parents…..that's just dumb.'
Judy kept shifting her gaze from the road to the fox that had remained unusually quiet since they left. She was worried that something was wrong with him and he wasn't telling her but that couldn't be it since he had a genuine smile on his muzzle….his beautiful muzzle that had lips that she wished she could… She shook her head to get those inappropriate thoughts. She was glad that she had gotten "Heat Cover" for lagomorphs. Something she had found out some time ago was that some mammals, mainly canines and any other mammal with an acute sense of smell, could tell when another mammal is in heat by their smell. She had used it to make sure that Nick would not detect it on her but that didn't mean that her mind wasn't betraying her. She only needed to deal with this for six more days and then she could finally relax. She would no longer have to beat down all the inappropriate thoughts that entered her mind and every time she looked at Nick, she wouldn't think about dragging him into her apartment so she could…
"Hey, Carrots?"
Judy shifted her gaze from the road to Nick to see a serious look on his face. Luckily, they stopped at a stoplight so she could look him in the eye. Her ears dropped as she internally panicked at how serious he looked. 'Oh sweet cheese and crackers, please tell me that the cover-up didn't wear off!' "what is it?"
Nick felt like he might as well just tell Judy straight up about the news. This wouldn't be the hardest thing he would tell her since the hardest would be telling her how he felt about her.
That remained the hardest because he never gained the nerve to tell her. How could he? She was a bunny that strived to be more than what the world told her she could be. He was a fox that gave up on the world and decided to become what the world said he was and even if he was now above that, it was only because of her and not because he kept going. She was a go-getter from the start, he was a quitter that was given a chance.
He smiled at her with his usually cocky smile as he opened his mouth to say they were godparents to not two but three pups…...until
Judy did not know what he was going to say but seeing that usual cocky smile made her feel a little better since what he was going to say, wasn't something extremely serious. Then again he had a talent of dropping extreme news with such an uncaring attitude. She waited for what he was going to say until she saw his cocky smile slowly drop into one of confusion and his eyes seemed to focus on her. No. something behind her. Suddenly….
Nick, in an almost unnoticeable motion, unbuckled himself, threw himself over to the driver's side, and screamed "JUDY!"

End of chapter
Some things to bring up
If you got the reference from the beginning part, then congrats.
For Judy's apartment, I figured that in a world of so many mammals of different sizes, there must be accessories and other such items that would allow smaller animals to use appliances that are meant for bigger mammals. Though not to a drastic degree.
For the Ottertons, the only one that has an official name is Emmit Otterton. His wife and kids do not have a first name so I had to come up with some. For the kids, I just gave them the name of a few people I know and for Mrs. Otterton I just randomly came up with one. After I finished this chapter, I did some more digging and found that the Fandom has given her the name Olivia. Now despite how they say that it is her official name, I do not believe that since they stated that Disney made Olivia her canon name in Zootopia 2, which is a big WTF since Z-2 hasn't even been released and no solid details on it have leaked. Apart from the rumor of them planning to make Zootopia 2 and 3 but that's just a rumor.
Same with Bellwether but the fandom name Dawn just stuck
Now I will admit that Olivia is a much better name but should I change Natasha to Olivia. Since this is the first chapter I can still do that
update: changed Mrs. Otterton's name from Natasha to Olivia
also, not sure if this was right but baby bunnies are called "kittens"? Let me know if that is right or not so I can fix it
And The name of the Fic is subject to change if someone can give me a better name or I think up of one
I suck and coming up with names
Flames will be ignored.
