Chapter 4: Trapped
Olivia thought to herself that the day was going pretty well. She sat with Nick telling him about how they decided that he would be the godfather of her pups. She and Emmitt had been discussing this for a while now as they felt the need to make sure that their pups would have someone look after them if anything happened. After the night howler incident that almost took Emmitt away from the family, they wanted to be sure. And since they had been friends with the heroic duo, it made sense to make them the prime candidates. She was fond of them both and she was glad that Nicholas had gotten out of the stigma he was labeled with even back in school.
She and Nick had actually met when they were extremely young. Well more like they were in the same school. She never interacted with him but she did have a class or two with the young tod. She as well as the entire class had noticed the change in attitude he went through after a weekend. The whole school noticed it since before that specific weekend, he was always smiling a happy innocent smile and seemed to want to help anyone he could but afterward…... he still smiled but it seemed more…...fake. No one knew why and no one really cared enough to figure out why. But rumors spread that he was starting to show his true colors as a fox and it was this rumor that pushed him into the spotlight and not in a good way.
After they moved up in the grades, she never saw him again, and to be honest, she did not really concern herself with it. It was years later when she was an adult that she heard about him again when her husband Emmitt came back with a set of pawpsicles that he had bought from said fox. Sure it was a shock to hear about him, but again, she did not concern herself about him. It was not that she did not care, it was that he was just a passing mammal at the time that she knew was in the same school.
However, she became extremely grateful for his contribution in the missing mammals case and the night howler incident.
Not to mention Judy. Judy was a newly appointed officer in the ZPD. a clear publicity stunt done by the mayor to appease the smaller in stature prey population for his re-election. They didn't know each other, Judy didn't need to take the case, but out of the goodness of her heart, she took it when the other officers had passed Olivia off.
Judy had become a close family friend in such a short amount of time and her pups enjoyed it when she came over.
Judy stood with her when they had found Emmitt and comforted her when they looked upon what he had become. She was even there with her when Emmitt had woken up from the antidote.
Olivia had forgiven Judy for the press conference that had caused a rift in Zootopia, especially when said bunny had told her that she was extremely nervous beforehand and did not know exactly what she was saying. Olivia held no animosity towards Judy no matter what she did because Judy will always do what she can to help other mammals.
Two of the unlikeliest mammals partnered up and saved the city as well as become very close to her family.
On a side note, she could see that there was something between the Fox and the bunny. Emmitt may not have noticed it but she was sure that both Judy and Nick had feelings for each other. They never said it but she could see it in the way Nick looked at Judy when the bunny was looking elsewhere. It is a similar look Emmitt gave her when he thought she wouldn't notice. As for Judy, Judy had a small spark in her eyes when she looked towards Nick and she was certain of this as it was the same spark she had for Emmitt when they first began to fall for each other.
The funny thing was that neither of them seemed aware of it and she was not going to tell either of them. This was the kind of thing that you should figure out for yourself. Even though it was her that made the first move as Emmitt was a bit hopeless when it came to confessing.
She was brought out of her thoughts when her husband came into the dining room with some tea.
"Penny for your thoughts?" he said as he poured a cup of tea for her before serving himself a cup.
Olivia picked up her cup as she took a sip "just thinking about our guests that had just left."
Emmitt chuckled as he thought about the two and the news he no doubt figured Nick would find a way to get the biggest reaction from Judy "do you suppose he had told her yet?"
She shook her head with a smile "he might. I would like to have seen the face Judy would make when he tells her."
"I'm sure that he will take a picture of it and post it on Furbook. Perhaps Stephan will show us when it's online."
Olivia smiled at this. She opened her mouth to say something until
"MOM! DAD!"
In ran Kyle and Stephan from the back door in a panic, locking said door and jamming a chair on the doorknob.
Olivia and Emmitt got up from the couch and looked at the pups. They would have said something but both pups ran behind them and hid
Emmitt turned around and looked at Kyle who hid behind him. "Pups, what's wrong?!"
Kyle pointed to the back door "there are mammals attacking everyone out there!"
The parents looked at each other at this as they had the same thought run through their heads
"Night howlers!?"
Both parents slowly moved to the tiny window that the door had.
Stephan panicked at this as he reached out for them and whispered out "mom, dad, don't….."
Olivia turned to them and smiled reassuringly "don't worry. We'll be careful." she looked to Emmitt who nodded at her before the two made their way to the door.
They slowly peeked out the tiny window and what they saw was worse than what they thought they would see.
"Emmitt …...what….?" were Olivia's stunned words
"I…...don't know…" was his response with fear being heard in his voice
Their neighbor, an Ocelot they had known for many years was at the moment ripping off the arms of her husband.
Olivia gasped as she put her paws over her mouth. She couldn't understand why she was seeing this but it terrified her. It was then she saw that a few more mammals were coming towards the now dead male ocelot. It was odd to see since none of them were walking on all fours like she had seen some of the Night howler victims did. She felt sick as a lot of them were missing a limb or chunk of their body. Normally this wouldn't have bothered her based on her profession but there was just something disgusting about this.
Emmitt held no resistance as he ran to the trash bin and unloaded his lunch. After he had emptied his stomach of its contents he got up and ran to his wife and whispered to her. "Olivia, come on."
Olivia turned to him and saw that he was just as scared as she was and he kept shifting his gaze from her to the pups to the front door. She nodded as she agreed with this. The two moved over to the pups who were scared as well before she placed a paw on their shoulders "we are going to the car and heading over to the ZPD. I want you to get ready to run as fast as you can when we open the door, alright." Seeing them nod she smiled "good. Let's go."
The family moved quickly to the front door and all took a deep breath as they were about to open the door to bolt to the car.
Emmitt looked back at his family as he opened the door to make sure that they were ready. Turning back to look outside he screamed as a pair of teeth snapped at his face and he immediately slammed the door shut before locking it with the door lock and bolt.
Olivia and the kids didn't see what happened but when they looked to Emmitt and seeing him lock the door they figured what happened.
They all heard banging on the door and Emmitt moved to the couch and began to push the piece of furniture to block the door. Olivia moved to help her husband as she was the more physically fit out of the two, they were able to push it there quickly. It was then that they saw some of the mammals outside were going towards the window and the two grabbed the dinner table and hoisted it to the window. They pressed their backs to it as they heard that they were scratching at the window. They looked at each other in panic as they did not know what was going on. This wasn't anything like Night Howler victims acted.
Emmitt then thought of something crucial to what they were doing. "Kyle! Go to our rooms and close all of the doors!" seeing his son not moving mostly due to fear he hated what he had to do "Go!" he saw his son snap out of it and ran to the halls and he heard the doors shutting. He hated to do that but at the moment they were all in panic. Not once had he ever had to yell at his son but he and Olivia were preoccupied with keeping the table covering the window that was now being banged on.
Olivia saw her youngest quivering in fear not only from the banging but from the moans. Her instincts kicking into high gear, she looked around for something to press on the table and saw the recliner they had. She looked to Emmitt "Emmitt, hold the table for a bit." seeing him nod to her she pushed off the table and ran to the recliner, and began to push it towards the window.
Emmit moved so the recliner would be placed there. He moved to stand by his wife as they watched it for a bit and thankfully it only shimmied with every bang.
Olivia seeing that the window will hold, for now, went to her son and wrapped him in her arms "shhh, it's ok, Stephan. They can't get in."
Stephan gripped onto his mother's blouse as he was crying in fear at what just happened.
Kyle came back into the room and looked just as shaken but holding it better than his younger brother.
Emmit walked up to him and hugged his son while thanking him for doing what he was asked and apologizing that he yelled at him.
They huddled together trying to drown out the banging, moans, and groans coming from the other side of the door.
Olivia looked to Emmitt, fear evident in her eyes, and whispered"Emmitt, what's going on?"
Emmitt shook his head "I don't know."
~Tundratown Prison~
{you're to evacuate everyone you can and get to the prisoner transports! We are heading your way to meet up with you.}
Swineton was shocked to hear this as she looked at the horse to her right. "Are you sure that this is necass…"
*CRASH* "AAAAAAHHHH!"
She heard crashing on the lower levels and they knew they were running out of time. "...understood. We'll meet you on the street in front of Pawmart."
{roger. Don't take any chances. Bogo doesn't want to lose any more of his men.}
Swinton grimaced at the word "more". It meant that someone had already been lost. "...got it!" she moved away from the radio and sighed as she heard the screams coming from down below. Hitting the button for the PA she announced "Attention everyone. On the order of the chief of police, all cells will be opened. Everyone is to head to the Prisoner transport buses! Avoid contact with these….zombies! Now Move!" she slammed her fist on a button that would be the emergency cell release. As she saw that all the cells door were opened and then it was a free for all with most of them seeing the bloody carnage before running to where they knew the busses were. "Christ. What the hell is going on?" she reached into a draw, pulling out her small arms, turned to her companion, tossed him his, and spoke "Kent, let's go!" she ran past the horse and out the control room and was making her way through the hallways towards the parking lot.
Kent followed the warden "Charlotte! Any idea on what's going on?!"
Charlotte Swineton couldn't believe what she was about to say. "From what I can see, we just found ourselves in the middle of the friggin end of the world! Zombies! Someone tell me that I'm just having a bad dream with the most overused horror trope there is!"
The two then ran into the cell block since it was the only way to the parking lot since they had to go to ground level. They were fortunate enough to see that the room wasn't flooded with the undead yet but they were coming in.
Kent chuckled ruefully "well if this is your dream. You have a horrible imagina….ARGH!" he found himself knocked down by two zombie mammals that were aiming to bite his face off, losing his firearm, but he was fortunate to have held them back by their necks but they were inching closer. "GET THEM OFF!"
Swineton aimed her gun and took a quick shot at one of them and was about to shoot the other one but she was pushed down by another zombie. The issue with this one was that it was a larger mammal and she was using all her strength to hold back the jaws that were dripping blood and inching closer to closing around her head. "Shit! Shit! Shit!" she felt tears sting her eyes but she could not focus on that as the teeth were now on each side of her head. Now all she was doing was trying to keep the mouth open.
"Swineton!"
The foul stench of rotting flesh and blood slammed her sense and a small part of her joked "Last thing I'm going to remember is that gross smell…... great." she shut her eyes as she felt her arms giving out.
*snap*
And then the mouth snapped closed.
But she was alive.
It was then she realized that the weight of the walking corpse was no longer on her. She opened her eyes to see another mammal moving towards Kent, grabbing the zombie and throwing it off. She surprised to see who it was "Lionheart!"
Leodore Lionheart was breathing heavily as all this was far more than he could imagine but right now they needed to leave. He picked up the gun Swineton dropped and walked over to her before opening his paw for her to take not only the gun but to help her up "I think it's time for us to leave."
Swineton saw the gun and took her a second before she grabbed it and used his paw to get back up. "Thanks."
"thank me later. Here they come!" he pointed down a hallway to see more zombies piling into the cellblock chasing prisoners and guards alike.
Swineton and Kent pointed their guns and began to open fire on the zombies as the warden (Swineton) shouted out "Head to the buses! Go go go!" the three turned and ran with everyone still alive following after them with the dead not far behind.
~Pricinct 1~
Judy had found her way into the precinct through one of the side entrances. Fortunately, it seemed that this side had very few zombies so she was able to make her way past them but barely since overstraining the injury in her leg was starting to make her dizzy. She was now hobbling towards where she heard the gunshots and despite the fact that they hurt her ears, she welcomed the sound cause it meant that whoever it was was still alive. She felt herself lose balance as she kept going "come one. Come on! Stupid leg."
"Keep shooting!"
"I am shooting!"
Judy recognized those voices and moved faster to turn the corner to see who it was "Delgato! Grizzoli!"
The lion of the two looked behind him for a second to see who called them. He went wide-eyed at the smallest officer in the precinct "Hopps!" he then released the clip that just went empty before loading another one and firing again "glad to see you made it! Maybe you and Wilde can help us out!"
Grizolli shook his head "forget helping us! You and Wilde get to the Chief's office. Turn on the Princint lockdown!"
Judy didn't know how to feel about what they were implying. For one thing, she liked the fact that every other officer would automatically think Nick and her would always be around each other but on the other hand, she was reminded that Nick wasn't here with her. "Nick's not with me!"
This caused the two to pause for a second before Grizilli growled out "damn it." he turned around and began running towards the lobby which would be the fastest way to the upper level to the chief's office. "Let's go!"
Judy followed behind Grizolli with Delgato standing holding them off for a second before following.
Delgato immediately noticed the bunny's hobbling and with a quick decision, he bent over and scooped her up as he caught up with Grizolli
Judy yelped when she found herself being pulled up. She then found herself being carried by the lion "Delgato! I can run by myself!"
"Yeah, but with you limping, it's too great a risk! Just deal with it for now."
Judy hated being seen as weak but at the moment she would be a hindrance if she ran on her own.
They burst through a door that led into the lobby only to see a good number of them already inside the lobby. There was an opening in between them and they ran through with Delgato just barely jumping over one that snapped at his feet. They moved up the stairs, which turned out to be mostly bare of the undead and they just ran towards the Chief's office. They burst through the door with the lion putting the bunny down before closing and locking the door.
Grizzoli moved to the computer on the desk before turning it on. It was like the world was slowing everything down as the start-up for the computer seemed to be taking its sweet time. It was to his relief and horror that the password screen showed up "Damn it!" he began to rummage through the draws hoping to find a sticky note or a small sheet of paper for the computer password.
Delgato had his head pressed against the door listening for anything coming closer. He turned his head to look at the polar bear to see him throwing papers everywhere "What is it?'
"I don't know the password for his computer. Without it, we would need to head to the maintenance computer on the other side of the precinct. And trust me, we don't want to do that."
"Type in 'GazelleDancerBogo' with the G, D, and B capitalized."
The larger mammals looked to the bunny confused with what she suggested but Grizzoli shrugged as right now wasn't the time to question it. Much to their shock, the computer unlocked and Grizolli typed in the commands that lead to the lockdown controls before he turned it on.
Then loud bangs of metal could be heard all over the building. They all felt glad that they got it on and jumped a little when a shutter dropped over the office window.
Delgato related a bit until he heard some moans down the hall. "Well at least no more will be able to get in. now we just have to deal with the ones inside the building." he leaned on the door, making sure to keep his hearing sharp as he crossed his arms and looked down at Judy with a quirked eyebrow. "How did you know the password to the chief's computer."
Judy sat down on the floor as she could no longer hold herself up. "Nick hacked into it once to see if he could and told me the password."
Grizolli groaned at this "better hope Bgo never finds out about this. He would kill Wilde the second he sees him." honestly, he shouldn't be surprised that Nick would do something like this. It was his nature. Not because he was a fox but because he always wanted to learn as much as he could about someone, even any dirty secret they had. Speaking of which. "Where is Wilde anyway?"
Judy sighed as she moved to lean her back against the wall while sitting on the floor as she spoke "earlier we were visiting some friends before we would go on patrol. After we met up with them we were heading towards the precinct since we had a late shift that day…." as she told the larger mammals the story, Grizzoli began to apply proper first aid since there was a medkit in the office.
Once she was finished telling them how she and Nick got separated, Delgato nodded "don't worry. Wilde is too stubborn to die from a zombie attack. The only thing that would kill him is if the IRS got their hands on him."
This was able to lighten the mood as Judy nodded in agreement. She had faith in Nick no matter what the circumstances. Even if this was unorthodox.
Grizzoli stopped his chuckle as he went back to the computer and pulled up the security feeds. He saw that there was still a good amount of zombies roaming the first floor with a small number on the second floor. "Well we are safe from the ones outside but there is still a good amount in here. We need a plan. Any of you called the che….?" he then noticed a phone laying right there on the desk "nevermind." he picked it up and immediately knew it was Bogo's
Judy saw the phone and sighed exasperatedly. "That's why he didn't pick up, he didn't have it on him."
Delgato sighed as well "and since he doesn't have it, we can't reach him. Not to mention that the radios we have are for a good to a certain distance. Tried before and he didn't respond. Which means that he is out of range."
Grizzoli then pulled out his gun and checked the clip he had and the others he had on his belt. "Got enough for a few more if I get a clear shot at them but not enough for what's down below."
Delgato did the same only to grimace at the small amount he had "doubt I could take out more than ten."
Judy hated that she didn't have any live arms on her. The only thing she had was a baton and getting in close was not a good idea. "So now what?"
Grizzolli looked at the security feeds again "they aren't coming up to this floor and I don't think they even know we are here. Maybe we can try and come up with a game plan to get rid of them. Right now this is the most secure place around but we need to clear them out for it to be safe.
Delgato chuckled "three against the horde of the undead. They should make a movie of us."
Judy smiled at this "well I'm no damsel in distress."
The two males chuckled softly with Delgato continuing "please. You would be the one standing on top of a building with war paint on your fur."
The three laughed at this because they knew that as of this moment…... they were stuck.
~hours later~
Olivia and Emmitt kept a stern hold on their pups as they had sat in the middle of the room watching the front door. Some time ago they had noticed that the mammals outside had stopped banging on the window and now seemed to be focused on trying to push the door.
They didn't know what to do. They couldn't go out back since they saw some of the mammals there and they knew for a fact that the front entrance was a no go.
"Mom?"
Olivia looked down at Stephan "yes?"
Stephan had been shaking all this time as he was terrified about what was going on but sitting still for so long had somehow calmed his nerves a bit. Most likely because he was getting used to the scratching at the door and the groans coming from the other side. "What are we going to do?"
Olivia and Emmitt's eyes met but it was clear to them both that they didn't know what to do.
Olivia held him tighter as she feared not for her but for her family.
Emmitt moved himself and Kyle closer and they merged into a family hug as the older otters wished for some kind of miracle.
It was then that they heard rough noises just outside the door. They heard grunting, moaning, and groaning just outside and they moved away from the door as they expected it to be broken down after this.
But after a few minutes of this….it grew silent. The family trembled at the silence since they didn't know what this could mean. They all jumped at the sound of their doorbell going off as they took several steps back. But what they heard next caused elation to enter their hearts
Di….delivery … need….signature from…..you or I could ….lose my job at Wilde's delivery service….."
The adults were happy to hear the sound of a familiar voice but after sitting in their own house for so long in fear, they were not entirely sure if it actually was Nick.
The pups however weren't so hesitant.
"It's Nick!"
"He's back!"
Olivia and Emmitt looked at each other before nodding to each other as they released their kids with Olivia whispering "stay here!" The two slowly made it to the door, moving the couch as much as they could before they undid the locks and bolt before slowly opening the door. They peaked out and were stunned to see Nick standing there. But what shocked them the most was that he was covered in blood and seemed to be wheezing.
Olivia brought her paw up to cover her mouth in shock "Nick?" she watched as he gave a strained smile as he wheezed out
"Emmet….! Olivia…!"
They were then stunned when his eyes rolled back and he fell backward. Landing hard onto the ground.
Olivia gasped in shock at this as she grew concerned about this. She moved closer to him and would have checked him but she heard noises a distance away before she looked up to see other mammals coming their way. She looked around and was wondering 'where's Judy!?' she looked back down at the fox and although seeing the blood was sending warning bells to her, when Nick spoke, she knew that it was still him. She looked to Emmitt and spoke "grab his foot. Help me get him inside.
Emmitt nodded as he followed what his wife said as the two dragged Nick as best they could back inside
End of chapter
Well Judy found out who was in the Precinct and now she is trapped in the very building she used to love going to. The Ottertons had a rough time but now they have a familiar face.
Wait and see what happens next with these groups and if anyone else will die.
