August 2nd, 1971
Mia woke up in the morning feeling a bit better about her situation. Her nightmare the previous night left her scared. 'Who was that woman? Why was she doing that to me? What happened to me before I came here?' These thoughts would haunt her until she got her memory back. If she got her memory back. Mia heard a knock at the door.
"Mia? Are you awake?" Euphemia said from the other side of the doorframe.
"Yes, mu-Euphemia!" Mia said, hoping Euphemia didn't hear her slip up. Euphemia walked into the room, drawing the blinds open. If she noticed the slip she didn't show it.
"Good morning dear, we are going to Diagon Alley today to get you some new clothes and hopefully decorations for this drab room of yours." Euphemia handed her a dress that looked a couple decades old, it was a set of navy blue dress robes with a halter neckline, and a long flowy skirt that went just past her knee, along with a pair of black ballet flats. "These were mine when I was your age. I know they are a bit outdated but it will have to work for now."
"Thank you, they are beautiful. Will we also be shopping for our Hogwarts supplies?" Mia asked hopefully.
"I suppose so, there's no reason to make two trips to Diagon Alley. Now get dressed and meet us for breakfast, dear." Euphemia said warmly, kissing Mia's cheek. Once Euphemia left the room, Mia stepped into the dress and zipped it up. It fit perfectly. She put on the shoes, and they were a little small but after a moment they lengthened to fit her feet perfectly.
Mia made her way down the stairs and, after many wrong turns, she found the dining room. James and Euphemia were waiting for her.
"Where is Fleamont?" Mia asked curiously.
"He had some matters to attend to before we head to Diagon Alley." Euphemia informed her, then gestured for her to sit down with them. James immediately jumped up and pulled her into a tight embrace, almost crushing her.
"Um-James? I can't breath." She whispered in his ear. He let go of her and put his hand out in front of her.
"Sorry about that, I'm your new brother, James." He introduced himself awkwardly. She shook his hand and they both sat down and started eating. Eventually James broke the awkward silence. "So...do you like quidditch?"
"A bit, I guess. I don't really remember." Mia said, awkwardly replying.
"Do you play?" James was genuinely curious.
"I don't know how to fly, but i'd love to learn." Mia told him. James got very excited, 'finally something I can talk to my sister about' he thought.
"I can teach you! Dad taught me and I'm really good!" James said. "Can I mum? Can I? Can I?" James said, practically jumping out of his chair.
"I don't see why not James, now hurry up you two. We are leaving in 10 minutes." Euphemia said, smiling at her two children.
The twins practically wolfed down all their food, excited to finally get their wands and other Hogwarts supplies. Euphemia led them to the fireplace and told them they'd be flooing to the Alley. Fleamont was there waiting for them.
"How do we do that?" Mia asked, slightly worried.
"Well you are going to take a handful of floo powder, then step into the fireplace. You're going to say where you want to go in a very clear voice, then throw the powder on the floor. Fleamont told her. "Euphemia and James will go first and you'll follow. I'll be right behind you."
They all grabbed a fistful of powder and once Euphemia and just had gone, she knew it was her turn. Mia walked into the fireplace, floo powder in hand and in a very clear voice shouted,
"DIAGON ALLEY."
She closed her eyes, threw the floo powder on the ground and instantly felt transported.
She opened her eyes and saw Euphemia and James waiting for her. Fleamont soon followed and the family headed towards their first stop, getting their wands. They made their way to Ollivanders.
"You two go in, we will wait out here." Euphemia told them, wanting to give them some privacy for this special moment. She handed them a sack of coins to pay for their wands.
"Come on!" James said, grabbing her hand, dragging her into the store. An old man was standing there putting wands away. He turned around, looking at the two children. He looked wise, ancient.
"Ah, I've been waiting for you two." The man said. "I am Garrick Ollivander. Come in." He said, gesturing for them to come forward. "I'm going to start with you" He said, pointing at James. He looked over the shelves and pulled out a wand.
"Spruce wood, 11", dragon heartstring." He said handing the wand to James. Nothing happened. "No, not that one." He looked over the shelves once more and pulled another wand. "11" long, mahogany, unicorn hair" Ollivander said, handing the wand to James. This time the wand glowed. The wand had found the wizard.
"Yes! I have a wand!" James said excitedly. Mia was so excited for him.
"Your turn now dear girl." Ollivander said, gesturing for her to come forward.
Mia walks forward nervously, Ollivander looked at her and passed her a wand from behind him. "11'' vine wood, dragon heartstring." Ollivander said, passing the curly haired witch her original wand. Nothing happened.
"I suppose not this one." Ollivander said curiously. He picked up another wand and passed it to her. "12'' yew wood, Phoenix feather." He said, delicately handing the young girl the wand. Onces again nothing happened.
"I wonder…" Ollivander said wondrously. He went into a back room and, not a moment later, he came back with a box covered in dust. "I remember every wand I've ever made, this wand in particular is special. Yes, very special indeed. This wand is special because unlike most, it has two cores. 12'' walnut with dragon heartstring and phoenix feather core." Mia grabbed the wand, and suddenly the wand omitted a large amount of light so blinding she had to look away.
"You will be a very powerful wizard, Miss Potter. Very powerful indeed." Ollivander said.
The twins paid for their wands and left the store. They met their parents as James started to speak.
"Mia's wand has two cores! Ollivander says that her wand is special! How cool is that!" James bragged about his sister. Mia blushed not wanting to bring attention to herself.
"Good for you Mia. I've never heard of such a thing before." Fleamont said, beaming at his daughter.
"Thanks Dad, maybe we could research it when we get home. Is there a library near here? I can get some books on the subject and we can maybe search it together." Hermione said, calling Fleamont her dad in public. 'It sounded so natural' she thought 'It might just be easy to call them mum and dad.'
"We have a library at home my dear, but I'm not too sure how many books we have on the subject of wands. We can stop at Flourish and Blotts while your mother and James stop at the quidditch store." Fleamont told his daughter, smiling down at her. He was glad his daughter shared his thirst for knowledge.
"We have a library?!" Mia nearly screamed in excitement. "We can get books!" Fleamont laughed at his daughter, grabbed her hand, and led her towards the bookstore.
"We'll meet you in front of Madame Malkins in 30 minutes." He called back as his daughter practically dragged him away.
Once in Flourish and Blotts, Fleamont told Mia that he would get the books that she and James needed for Hogwarts. She went off to find some books about wands, which happened to be in the row just across from the books about werewolves.
She noticed a boy standing there reading. He was skinny, with sandy blond hair falling into his light brown eyes. He looked no older than she was, but he seemed tall for his age. His face was riddled with faded scars.
"You know everything in that book is a lie, right?" She told the boy. He looked up at her, not meeting her eyes, and he'd gone quite pale.
"What do you mean?" He asked. Finally looking at her, his eyes looked pained.
"Everything in that book about werewolves is a complete and utter lie." Mia told him sternly. "They paint werewolves as incontrolable monsters."
"Aren't they?" He asked her, sounding confused.
"No, they have no control over what happens to them. Sure they don't have their minds for one night of the month, but they are still human." She explained to him. "Oh my goodness how rude of me, I'm Mia, Mia Potter." She told him holding her hand out to him. He looked at her hand for a moment. Almost too nervous to touch it.
"Remus Lupin." He said, finally shaking her hand and smiling at her. "You must be shopping for Hogwarts."
"Yeah, me and my twin brother James will be in first year." She told Remus. "Are you in your first year as well?"
"Yeah, to be honest I'm quite nervous. I've never been to school before." Remus says sheepishly.
"Me neither." She confesses. "Most people, I think, go to a school to learn life skills before Hogwarts. I was homeschooled."
"Me too. Why aren't you at the quidditch store? Or Madame Malkins? Most kids our age just get their parents to pick up their books." Remus asked her.
"Oh well, my dad is getting mine and my brother's books. But I'm here getting some books about wands." She informed him.
"Wands?" Remus said, sounding confused.
"Yeah, I just got mine and it's quite unique. My parents said they've never heard of anything like it. So I've decided to pick up a few books about the subject." She told him.
"What's so unique about the wand? Maybe I could help you." Remus asked, interested.
"My wand has a strange wood and core combination, as well as two cores." She told him sheepishly.
"That is rather unusual, let me help you find some book that might help." Remus offered, she nodded. They spent the next ten minutes looking at books that could be helpful, until Remus heard his mother call.
"I have to go." Remus said, not wanting to leave. Mia grabbed a scrap piece of parchment and wrote down her address.
"Owl me, maybe we can sit together on the train." She said, handing him the piece of paper and smiling.
"I'd like that." He told her. She hugged him and he stiffened under her touch, it was as though he'd never been hugged before. Eventually he relaxed and hugged her back. "See you on the train." He told her as he broke out of the hug, and left.
Mia watched as he left, waving with her left hand as she held her books in the other. Her father came back behind her, having watched her say good-bye to her new friend.
"Who was that?" Her father asked her curiously.
"That was Remus Lupin, he helped me find these books." She said, holding up the books for him to see. "He's going into his first year as well, I gave him our address so he could owl me. We are going to sit with each other on the way to Hogwarts." She informed her father excitedly.
"I'm glad you're making friends Mia." He told her. "Did you tell him anything I should know about? Something we'd have to tell James to get your story straight?" He asked, making sure that her story would always be the same. He'd only known the girl a day, but Fleamont was already attached to the girl. He'd do anything to protect her.
"I told him that I've been homeschooled." She told him. "I hope that's alright."
"James was as well, not to worry." He reassured her. "Let's pay for these and go meet your mother and brother at Madame Malkins. Then maybe we can get some lunch, how does that sound?"
"It sounds great Dad." Mia said excitedly. They paid for their books and headed to meet James and Euphemia.
James and Mia went to get their robes fitted while their parents went to get the rest of their supplies. Mia had already been fitted for her robes, and was waiting for James to be finished. A woman with black hair and grey eyes walked in, wearing what looked to be very expensive forest green dress robes. Behind her was a boy with wavy black hair that cut off just above his shoulders, he was also wearing dress robes, his black, though he looked less than comfortable in them.
"I require Hogwarts robes for my son, where is Madame Malkin?" The woman asked the woman at the counter in a less than kind voice. The young boy, who looked to be about Mia's age, looked humiliated to be in the same room as her.
"I'm afraid she is with another customer at the moment. It won't be more than another moment." The store clerk said to the black hair woman, looking quite fearful.
"YOU WILL SERVE US NOW!" The woman screeched. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM? I AM WALBURGA BLACK! YOU WILL SERVE ME NOW." Her son was turning beet red in embarrassment.
"It really won't be more than another moment, Mrs. Black" The clerk said, her voice shaking in fear.
"WHO TAKES PRECEDENCE ON A MEMBER OF THE GREAT AND NOBLE HOUSE OF BLACK! SOME SORT OF MUDBLOOD OR BLOOD TRAITOR? NO, YOU WILL SERVE ME NOW!"
"Excuse me!" Mia said, calling her brother that foul word or a blood traitor, she wouldn't get away with it. "That's my brother you're speaking about, now she said it will only be another minute. Would you kindly shut up? You're screeching like a banshee and it is about to make my ears bleed you foul woman!" Mia was livid. She could see this Walburga person's face turn red in rage. Her son was staring wide eyed in disbelief, not believing that someone was actually talking back to his mother.
"AND JUST WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING TO A BLACK LIKE THAT, YOU STUPID CHILD." Walburga said, screeching.
"Mia Potter, I would say it's a pleasure to meet you, but I've been taught not to tell lies." Mia told cheekily. Her son was trying to hold in a laugh as he watched this brilliant little witch stand up to his mother.
"WHY YOU LITTLE-." Walburga started, getting interrupted by Euphemia as she walked in the room.
"Walburga, my dear niece, why are you yelling at my daughter?" Euphemia said through a fake smile.
"Your daughter? I wasn't aware James was a twin. Anyways, your daughter is the most disrespectful little bint I've ever met in my life." Walburga snarled at her Aunt. "Has she never been taught to respect her betters?"
"When I meet my betters, they will have my respect. Until then I have to deal with the likes of you." Mia said bitterly, scowling at her supposed cousin. Walburga's son couldn't hold it in anymore, he let out a roaring laugh. Walburga scowled at her son, giving him a look that could kill a person.
"Ah, Sirius, I hardly recognized you." Euphemia looked at her great nephew smiling. "How are you?"
'So his name is Sirius' Mia thought to herself. She looked at him to meet his eyes, only to discover he was already looking at her. There was something about him, something she couldn't explain.
"You do not speak to my son after the way your daughter treated me." Walburga turned to leave the store, dragging Sirius along with her. "There's a shop in Knockturn Alley with much better service." She dragged Sirius out of the store, Mia and Sirius never breaking eye contact until they left the store.
"Well done Mia, Walburga needed to be taken down a few pegs." Euphemia said to her daughter. James came out of the dressing room, saw Mia, and ran to her, pulling her into a tight hug.
"I heard all of it, you were brilliant! We are going to have so much fun at Hogwarts together!" James said. The mischief they could get up too!
"Well we have all of your supplies now, I think it's time to get some lunch and head home." Euphemia said, internally smiling at her daughter's boldness.
The Potters left for home after getting lunch and some more new clothes for Mia. The weeks leading up to their Hogwarts departure, James and Mia became inseparable. James kept his promise and taught her how to fly, and she was quite fast. James said she would be a good seeker. On the weekends their father would join them, and Mia would play seeker. She caught the snitch everytime without hesitation. She couldn't wait to try out for the team with James, but first years aren't allowed to play. Until then summer playing would have to do.
She also continued research on her wand, and as far as her and Fleamont could tell, no one had ever had a wand with two cores. She eventually gave up for the summer when Fleamont told her of the extensive collection of books at the Hogwarts library. She read all of her first year books and practically memorized them.
She and Remus were in correspondence all summer. She told him about her lack of finding, and he promised to help her when they got to Hogwarts. They'd agreed to sit on the train ride to Hogwarts together. The two had become fast friends. She asked if James could join them, and since she'd talked about him so much in her letters, he already felt like a friend to Remus. She couldn't wait to see him again, but she also couldn't help but think about her poor cousin Sirius. Having to live in a house with a woman like that had to have been horrible.
Mia continued to have strange nightmares every night. But every night, James was always there to help her calm down. She never talked about what happened in them, but she always remembered the crazed, curly black haired witch that caused her pain. Eventually her parents gave her small drops of dreamless sleep potion that lessoned how real the nightmares felt, but they were still there nonetheless. She learned how to silence her room so she didn't disturb anyone else in the house.
Her powers hadn't grown much stronger, but it would flourish sometimes when she drank water. No one had seemed to notice it. She told Euphemia and Fleamont everytime, and they told her that she couldn't tell anyone. They suspected that the reason she was attacked was because she had this power. She promised them she wouldn't tell a soul, at least until she learned to have some control over it.
August 31st, 1971
The night before she left for Hogwarts, Mia was packing when she called Fleamont and Euphemia into her room. She had been thinking about something for a while, and wanted to discuss it with them.
"Yes Mia? It's there something wrong?" Euphemia asked worriedly.
"Yes, I just wanted to discuss something with you." Mia said nervously.
"You can talk to us about anything Mia, you know that." Fleamont sat down on the bed beside Mia, Euphemia on the other side.
"Well, these last few weeks I've gotten really close with James, and I truly consider him to be my brother. I also consider you to be like a Mum and a Dad to me." Mia played with her hands nervously. "I just wanted to ask if you'd be alright if I called you Mum and Dad?"
Euphemia gasped, holding a hand to her mouth, tears starting to form in her eyes. Fleamont pulled her into a side hug.
"I believe that I speak for both of us when I say, we love you Mia and you are our daughter. We'd be honored to be called your mum and dad." Fleamont said, holding his daughter. The curly haired girl and her parents held each other close as they savoured this touching moment.
"Well enough of that." Euphemia said, wiping her eyes. "We have to get you packed."
They spent the rest of the night packing her books and clothes. Before dinner, James and Mia were up in his room playing a round of exploding snap when Fleamont and Euphemia called them both downstairs, saying they had a surprise for the two of them.
They ran down the stairs to find a cage with a white Snowy owl inside.
"Who's this?" Mia said, cooing at the cage.
"This is a new owl for you and James to share, so you can message us from Hogwarts." Fleamont told the excited twins.
"Can we name him Hedwig?" Mia says, asking James, unsure of where she got the name.
"I like that. But why Hedwig?" James asks, curiously.
"I'm honestly not too sure to be quite honest." Mia says.
"Well it's a beautiful name, let's eat dinner and then off to bed with the two of you. You have a big day tomorrow." Euphemia said to her two children.
They ate and, like their mother said, they were sent to bed. Neither of them could sleep. Mia got up and walked to James' room, surprised to see that he was wide awake.
"Couldn't sleep?" He asked, already knowing the answer. She shook her head. "Well come here then." He said moving over so that she could sleep beside him.
"I can't stop thinking about it, what do you think Hogwarts will be like?" Mia asked James wondrously.
"Haven't you already been there?" James asked.
"Yes but only the hospital wing. I wonder what house I'll be in." Mia asked herself.
"I'll be in Gryffindor for sure, you'll probably be the same, or a Ravenclaw." James said, he rolled onto his side to see the clock on the wall. "It's getting pretty late, we should sleep."
"Can I stay with you?" Mia asked.
"Of course." James said, rolling his eyes as though it was such a ridiculous question.
They both soon fell asleep, dreaming of the adventures that would soon come. Mia, however, got her first real sleep in a long time.
